ОБЩИНА КАЗАНЛЪК
The second edition of the International Contemporary Miniprint of Kazanlak provides a forum for the serious reexamination of the art of printmaking in Bulgaria. It provides a snapshot of various artistic processes, traditions, experiments and new spaces; a meeting of dozens of artists from four continents seeking traditional and new means of expression. The vision for this annual international exhibition began in 2010. Freed from the requirements of specific themes and required techniques, the ambition was to promote genuine discourse and the pursuit of harmony between ideas and artistic realization. The exhibition was devised as a competition divided in two sections: traditional and experimental techniques. For each section, a panel of winning artists from previous editions awards 3 mentions and one First Prize artist whose work (15-25 prints) is exhibited alongside the main exhibition. This year, Miniprint Kazanlak was pleased to award the First Prize for Traditional Printmaking to Guy Langevin (Canada), and the First Prize for Experimental Printmaking to Ursula H端lsewig (Germany). This second edition features over 150 works from 56 artists coming from 24 countries, demonstrating the relevance and specificity of every creative act and corresponding to the explicit ambition of the forum. The small format of the works is not only a testament to the ability of artists to exhibit perfect knowledge of composition and drawing techniques, but also a manifestation of their ability to condense incredibly rich ideas into a 10 x 10 cm canvas. The integral selection of the exhibited and reviewed works is hereby featured in this catalogue. Contrary to a number of other similar forums exclusively privileging works from only either traditional or experimental mediums, the International Contemporary Miniprint of Kazanlak is a stage where artists can fully showcase the means which most adequately express their ideas rather than complying with approved methodologies. Often the combination and simultaneous viewing of multiple perspectives is what gives the viewer a sense of the full range of expressive images, metaphors and symbols that are available to convey meaning. As such, the show takes the form of a casual meeting between past and present, chronicling the technological and ideological shifts which inspire the work of artists all over the world, and marking the future of printmaking. Cleo Wilkinson has an Bachelor of Fine Arts (honours) degree from Auckland University (New Zealand ). Her mezzotints have been exhibited in over 200 international juried group and solo exhibitions. She has been an artist in residence and visiting artist in over 30 international locations. Cleo has been awarded numerous major international print awards. Peter Boyadjieff is an artist born in Kazanlak, Bulgaria. He holds a Masters in Visual Arts and Design at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria (1983) with additional specialization in computer graphics, at the I.C.A.R.I. school in Montreal, Canada (2000). Due to the overwhelming positive response to our 2014 exhibition, the show was officially hosted by the Art Gallery of Stara Zagora. With more than 8000 years of history, Stara Zagora is one of the oldest continuously populated places in Europe. The Art Gallery is located at the heart of the city, at the heart of its booming cultural center and numerous touristic destinations.
