CHAPTER6
SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA
SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the financial, cultural, and transportation center of the San Francisco Bay Area, a region of 7.15 million people which includes San Jose and Oakland.
Chapter6. San Francisco _ page.72
The only consolidated city-county in California, it encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, giving it a density of about 17,179 people per square mile (6,632 people per km2). It is the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the secondmost densely populated large city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California and the 13th most populous city in the United States, with a population of 805,235 as of the 2010 Census. In 1776, colonists from Spain established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi on the site. The California Gold Rush of 1849 propelled the city into a period of rapid growth, increasing the population in one year from 1,000 to 25,000, and thus transforming it into the largest city on the West Coast at the time. After three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, hosting
the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. During World War II, San Francisco was the port of embarkation for service members shipping out to the Pacific Theater. After the war, the confluence of returning servicemen, massive immigration, liberalizing attitudes, and other factors led to the Summer of Love and the gay rights movement, cementing San Francisco as a center of liberal activism in the United States. Today, San Francisco is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, ranking 33rd out of the 100 most visited cities worldwide, and is renowned for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture, and its famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and Chinatown. The city is also a principal banking and finance center, and the home to more than 30 international financial institutions, helping to make San Francisco rank eighteenth in the world’s top producing cities, ninth in the United States, and thirteenth place in the top twenty global financial centers.
I was excited about traveling to San Francisco with my best friend, Wendy, because I had grown tired and New York and wanted to leave. Unfortunately, I got sick when I traveled to San Francisco; I believe it was because of the huge change in the weather. New York had been so hot, but when I arrived in San Francisco, it was cool and damp.
San Francisco has many attractions for visitors. So, we wanted to travel in San Francisco by a rent a car. I try to rent a car for my travel many times, but hard to find one because of so many visitors. If some company has a left car, they wouldn’t have a GPS. It pissed us off. I think we were unlucky at that time. Eventually, we decided to take a tourist bus rather than rent a car.
SAN FRANCISCO
Cable Car System
The San Francisco cable car system is the world’s last permanently operational manually operated cable car system, and is an icon of San Francisco, California.
The cable car system forms part of the intermodal urban transport network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway, or Muni as it is better known. Cable cars operate on two routes from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman’s Wharf, and a third route along California Street.
While the cable cars are used to a certain extent by commuters, their small service area and premium fares for single rides make them more of a tourist attraction. They are among the most significant tourist sites in the city, along with Alcatraz Island and Fisherman’s Wharf.

Every city has its own unique character; the character of San Francisco is much stronger than most cities, especially, the housing style, which is I imagine San Francisco looks very much like Victorian England, even though I have never been there. It is the Victorian style houses that give San Francisco its character.

SAN FRANCISCO
SAUSALITO
Sausalito is a San Francisco Bay Area city, located in Marin County, California, United States. Sausalito is located 8 miles south-southeast of San Rafael, at an elevation of 13 feet. The population was 7,330 as of the year 2000 census. The community is situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, and prior to the building of that bridge served as a terminus for rail, car and ferry traffic. Developed rapidly as a shipbuilding center in Worl d War II, the city’s industrial character gave way in postwar years to a reputation as a wealthy and artistic enclave, a picturesque residential community (incorporating large numbers of houseboats), and a tourist destination. It is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the protected spaces of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Chapter6. San Francisco _ page.78
We went to Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito that are so famous for people by tourist bus. Wendy and I was really good to visit there. The view from Sausalito to San Francisco downtown was fantastic. Especially, Golden Gate Bridge is famous for people in San Fran cisco. The houses are located on the mountain. And there is sea under the mountain; it was just like picturesque like North/ West Vancouver. I thought Sausalito looks like NorthVancouver and West Vancouver. In addition to, Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito are so similar to Lion Gate Bridge. I realized Vancouver is such awesome city, again. When we arrived in Sausalito, there are many stores which are ice cream shops, resturants, cloths shops, etc... Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time there. We should come back to downtown earlier. If I have a chance to visit in San Francisco, I would visit Sausalito again. It is definitely true that that place is awesome.
Palace of Fine Arts Theatre
Chapter6. San Francisco _ page.80
The Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District of San Francisco, California, is a monumental structure originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in order to exhibit works of art presented there. One of only a few surviving structures from the Exposition, it is the only one still situated on its original site. It
was rebuilt in 1965, and renovation of the lagoon, walkways, and a seismic retrofit were completed in early 2009. It remains a popular attraction for tourists and locals, and is a favorite location for weddings and wedding party photographs for couples throughout the
San Francisco Bay Area, and such an icon that a miniature replica of it was built in Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim.
Golden Gate Bridge The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. As part of both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1, the structure links the city of San Francisco, on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County. It is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and of the United States. It has been declared one of the modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge “possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world.
Fisherman’s Wharf
Chapter6. San Francisco _ page.82
Fisherman’s Wharf is a neighborhood and popular tourist attraction in San Francisco, California. It roughly encompasses the northern waterfront area of San Francisco from Ghirardelli Square or Van Ness Avenue east to Pier 35 or Kearny Street. The F Market streetcar runs through the area, the Powell-Hyde cable car lines runs to Aquatic Park, at the edge of Fisherman’s Wharf, and the Powell-Mason cable car line runs a few blocks away.
Fisherman’s Wharf gets its name and neighborhood characteristics from the city’s early days during the Gold Rush where Italian emigre fishermen settled in the area and fished for the Dungeness Crab. From then until present day it remained the home base of San Francisco’s fishing fleet. Despite its redevelopment into a tourist attraction during the 1970s and 1980s, the area is still home to many active fishermen and their fleets.

San Francisco has lots of things for tourist which is such a tourist bus, or attractions place.
Chapter6. San Francisco _ page.84
Especially, the old cable car by using hands, not electronic was quite interesting for me. It is specialty as well as old history in San Francisco. Transit ystem was quite good as well. I have never felt that I want to live in any of the cities I have visited in the US, except San Francisco. San Francisco is much more beautiful than I expected. Even though, there is high hill on downtown, it makes the city mood I think. Moreover, the Victorian architecture style
house is one of sight view in San Francisco. San Francisco is also famous for seafood. I enjoyed a bowl full of seafood soup; the bowl was made of bread; it was a loaf of bread that had been hollowedout. The soup was incredibly tasty; I had never tasted anything like it before. I believe one of San Francisco’s major attractions is its food. I would love to visit San Francisco again; I was only there for three days, two nights, which is not nearly enough time to take in the sights and to experience the many things the city has to offer.

LOS ANGELES
CALIFORNIA
LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles with a population at the 2010 United States Census of 3,792,621, is the most populous
city in California and the second most populous in the United States, after New York City,
Chapter7. Los Angeles _ page.86
It is the focal point of the larger Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside combined statistical area, which contains nearly 17.8 million people and which is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world and the second largest in the United States. Los Angeles is also the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populated and one of the most multicultural countiesin the United States, while the entire Los Angeles area itself is recognized and regarded as the most diverse metropolitan area in the United States. The city’s inhabitants are referred to as “Angelenos” . Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. Often known by its initials, LA, and nicknamed the City of Angels, Los Angeles is a world center of business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, technology, and education. It is home to renowned
institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields, and is one of the most substantial economic engines within the United States. Los Angeles has been ranked the third richest city and fifth most powerful and influential city in the world, behind only New York City in the United States. The Los Angeles combined statistical area (CSA) has a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $831 billion (as of 2008), making it the third largest economic center in the world, after the Greater Tokyo Area and the New York metropolitan area. As the home base of Hollywood, it is known as the “Entertainment Capital of the World”, leading the world in the creation of motion pictures, television production, video games, and recorded music. The importance of the entertainment business to the city has led many celebrities to call Los Angeles and its surrounding suburbs home. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics as well as multiple games of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, including the final. Los Angeles is also home to renowned universities such as the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles. Los Angeles enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with an average of 35 days with measurable precipitation annually.
Wendy and I took a bus from San Francisco to Los Angeles. We took a night bus and should have slept on the bus, but sleeping on a bus isn’t very comfortable or relaxing. So when we arrived in LA we were super tired. At this time, I felt that I just wanted to go back to my place in Vancouver and relax. But, but as soon as we arrived in LA a driver met us at the bus terminal and drove us to our guest house. After taking a nap we were able to go out and enjoy the city. Los Angles is a city of palm trees; actually, palm trees are symbolic of LA now. Palm trees definitely make one feel they are in LA.
Once again, we tried to rent a car, but this time after some effort we were successful. We rented the car for two days and we could go wherever we wanted in LA; although parking proved to be a problem. The day after I arrived in LA, we went to Universal Studios in Hollywood. I had already been to Universal Studios in Japan; it’s weird, Universal Studios in Japan is larger than the original in Hollywood; I don’t know why! Anyway, Universal Studios were really enjoyable; however, we stayed awake almost all night on our last day in LA. We were really tried but we wanted to talk about and savor our experience.
Universal Studio Chapter7. Los Angeles _ page.88
We didn’t have much time in LA. So we should decide what we do. I preferred going to the Disney Land instead of going to Universal Studio because I already have been there in Japan. But my friend, Wendy, wanted to go to Universal Studio so I just followed her. Oddly, Universal Studio in Hollywood is smaller than in Japan. Even though it was small, we were fun.
Universal Studios Hollywood is a movie studio and theme park in the unincorporated Universal City community of Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is one of the oldest and most famous Hollywood movie studios still in use. Its official marketing headline is “The Entertainment Capital of LA”, though during the summer it is often advertised as “The Coolest Place in LA.” It was initially created to offer tours of the real Universal Studios soundstages and sets. It is the first of many fully-fledged Universal Studios Theme Parks located across the world. Woody Woodpecker is the mascot for Universal Studios Hollywood.
Los Angeles When people think of LA they conjure up images of Hollywood. I was the same, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica‌ Beverly Hills was fantastic, just as I imagined it would be. The houses in Beverly Hills are amazing, no one could think of anything better than living in this area. We dropped by the University of LA for a while, the campus has the same ambience as Beverly Hills;
it was wonderful, making us jealous of the students who are able to attend university there. We had booked our guest house in K-town (Korean Town). Generally, I have been disappointed with K-towns in America; I have been to K-town in Manhattan and others cities and found that they tend to be dirty and not very well designed.
In LA, I expected a difference though, because K-town in LA has a long history compared to others. However, I was completely wrong in my expectations. It was just like the countryside in Korea, and at night it was scary. I was afraid to walk around the area at night.
Holly Wood Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios and movie stars, the word Hollywood is often used as a metonym of American cinema. Today, much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as the Westside neighborhood, and the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, but significant

auxiliary industries, such as editing, effects, props, post-production, and lighting companies remain in Hollywood, as does the backlot of Paramount Pictures. On February 16, 2005, California Assembly Members Jackie Goldberg and Paul Koretz introduced a bill to require California to keep
specific records on Hollywood as if it were independent, although it is not the typical practice of the City of Los Angeles to establish specific boundaries for districts or neighborhoods. For this to be done, the boundaries were defined.
The bill was unanimously supported by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles City Council. Assembly Bill 588 was approved by the Governor of California on August 28, 2006, and now the district of Hollywood has official borders. The border can be loosely described as the area east of West Hollywood, south of Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, Cahuenga Boulevard, and Barham Boulevard, and the cities of Burbank and Glendale, north of Melrose Avenue and west of the Golden State Freeway and Hyperion Avenue. This includes all of Griffith Park and Los Feliz[citation needed] – two areas that were hitherto considered separate from Hollywood by most Angelenos.[who?] The population of the district, including Los Feliz, as of the 2000 census was 123,436 and the median household income was $33,409 in 1999. As a district within the Los Angeles city limits, Hollywood does not have its own municipal government. There was an official, appointed by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who served as an honorary “Mayor of Hollywood” for ceremonial purposes only. Johnny Grant held this position from 1980 until his death on January 9, 2008. However, no replacement has ever been named after Grant’s death.

Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Los Angeles are full of amazing things! We should go to feel and see them! Like San Francisco, LA is located on the West Coast in California; But LA is much different than San Francisco. It is much drier and hotter; there are a lot of desert areas in and around LA. Maybe everyone thinks to live in LA most people need to get a car.
Chapter7. Los Angeles _ page.94
Transit in LA is not that convenient. So it’s hard to live in LA
without a car. Anyways it was good experience to look around Hollywood and Beverly Hills. In my opinion, the people living in LA look more comfortable and easier than people living in New York. Though, I could get the different experience in LA. The most different thing between New York and LA is transit system.
Though, LA was quite dry, Hollywood and Beverly Hills look great. Especially, when I went to Beverly Hills, I was speechless. The houses are luxurious I have ever seen before. It was new experience for me.
The people living in LA surely know that it’s hard to get somewhere if they don’t have a car. From the reason, I rented a car for looking around the city. Since I had traveled, the cities I traveled have their own character and atmosphere.

LAS VEGAS NEVADA
LAS VEGAS
Las Vegas is the most populous city in Nevada, United States and the seat of Clark County.
Chapter8. Las Vegas _ page.96
Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city for gambling, shopping, and fine dining. The city bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its casino resorts and associated entertainment. A growing retirement and family city, Las Vegas is the 28th-most populous city in the United States, with an estimated population by the U.S. Census Bureau of 583,756 as of 2010. The 2010 population estimate of the Las Vegas metropolitan area was 1,951,269. Established in 1905, Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911. At the close of the 20th century, Las Vegas was the most populous American city founded
in that century (a distinction held by Chicago in the 19th century). The city’s tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of Sin City, and this image has made Las Vegas a popular setting for films and television programs. There are numerous outdoor lighting displays on Fremont Street, as well as elsewhere in the city. The name Las Vegas is often applied to unincorporated areas that surround the city, especially the resort areas on and near the Las Vegas Strip. The 4.2 mi (6.8 km) stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard known as the Strip is mainly in the unincorporated communities of Paradise, Winchester, and Enterprise.
Leaving LA I experience a serious problem. It was terrible, my Delta Airlines flight was canceled unex pectedly and I had to wait 12 hours at the airport for the next flight. I was super pissed-off; I missed an expensive, popular prepaid show because of the fucking delay. It was a super fucking piss-off. I arrived in Las Vegas at 1:00 AM totally exhausted. I didn’t want to see anything; I just wanted to go to my hotel and sleep. While I was in Vegas, the 2010 South African World Cup game between Korea and Nigeria took place. It was a really important game for us Koreans; this game would determine if Korea would make it to the ‘round of 16’. I watch every Korean 2010 World Cup game in a different city, but for this one I was in Vegas. I wanted to share the excitement with
many Koreans, so I looked for a Korean restaurant in Vegas. Fortunately, we found such a place with a big screen TV, and many tables, where people sat watching the game. I was shivering with excitement as I watched the game; all the Koreans were cheering for out team. Everyone wore red T-shirts and so did I. Finally, the last whistle was blown and Korea had won. Everyone was shouting in jubilation… I too was so please our team had won. After watching the game we continued our tour of the city. I didn’t really have much time in Las Vegas, only two nights and one day, and unfortunately, I arrived in Las Vegas totally exhausted; because, it was at the end of my trip. I felt I had missed something while I was leaving Las Vegas.
The Venetian Resort Casino The Venetian Resort Casino is a luxury hotel and casino resort situated between Harrah’s and The Palazzo on the east side of the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, NV, United States, on the site of the old Sands Hotel.
The hotel tower contains 40 stories and rises 475 feet. The Venetian is owned and operated by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. The Venetian also serves as the seat of the corporate headquarters for its parent company. This hotel features a life-like replica tower of St Mark's Campanile in Venice, Italy. The Venetian is (along with the adjacent Sands Expo Con-
vention Center and The Palazzo Hotel and Casino Resort) part of the largest five-diamond hotel and resort complex in the world with 4,049 suites, 4,059 hotel rooms, and a 120,000-square-foot (11,000 m2) casino
New York-New York Hotel New York-New York uses the New York City influence of its name in several ways. Its architecture is meant to evoke the New York City skyline; the hotel includes several towers configured to resemble New York City towers such as the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. In front of the property is a lake representing New York Harbor, with a 150 ft (46 m) tall replica of the Statue of Liberty, and replicas of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Ellis Island, and Grand Central Terminal.
We visited New York-New York Hotel in Vegas to ride the rollercoaster. It is famous for tourists. When we arrived there at day time, it was close because there is something problem to it. So we weren’t able to ride it at that time. But we went there again at night. Luckily, it worked again. Finally, we rode it! It was really interesting.
The Eiffel Tower in Vegas Paris Las Vegas is a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Para dise, Nevada, USA, that is owned and operated by Harrah’s Entertainment. As its name suggests, its theme is the city of Paris in France; it includes a half scale, 541-foot-tall (164.6 m) replica of the Eiffel Tower, a sign in the shape
of the Montgolfier balloon, a two-thirds size Arc de Triomphe, a replica of La Fontaine des Mers, and a 1,200-seat theatre called Le Theatre des Arts. The front of the hotel suggests the Paris Opera House and the Louvre.
I was intrigued in looking around and trying to determine if the hotel was really a fake or a replica. When I went to the Venice Hotel, did it really feel like Venice? In the New York Hotel It looked like just in New York. There is even an Eiffel Tower which is exactly half the size of the real Eiffel Tower. I think it is these hotels which give Las Vegas much of its character.
It is better to enjoy Las Vegas at night, rather than during the day; because the weather is too hot and dry during the day, reaching 41+ degrees. It is so dry, that I constantly felt the need for water. I stayed in Vegas two nights and one day; during which time, friend made the comment, “Vegas is like a fake city.â€? Many hotels model their design and ambiance after hotels of famous locations in other cities of the world‌ for example, New York, Paris, Venice, etc.

Even though Las Vegas is like fake city, but they have so much things to enjoy! Let’s go to Vegas! My fist impression of Las Vegas was ‘HOT!’ The weather was hot, the neon signs at night, ‘hot’, the night life, ‘hot’… Las Vegas is a hot city. My hotel was chic and fantastic; it was the Treasure Island Hotel on Las Vegas. It was first time to stay in a chic hotel since I traveled in US. It was so comfortable to stay there.
Chapter8. Las Vegas _ page.106
My friend told me, “Las vegas city is just like fake city.” It was true. I’d had opporunity to see even
fake city by Vegas hotel. Venetian hotel appears Venice. Venetian hotel appears Venice. For me, I have never been to Venice. So even though I just visited the hotel which looks just like Venice, it was good experience with seeing river and boats. There are some sightseeing wherever inside and outside.
Vegas is the excitment city for people. They have lots of things to enjoy such as clubs, musicals, shows etc. If anyone plans to have vacation, I would recommand you to go Las Vegas!
PHILADELPHIA USA
EPILOGUE I have experienced many different things in the past year while living in North America. I have changed, grown, matured and become much more independent. The first change I experience was gaining the ability to see the world beyond Korea. I began to think of Korea from a global perspective, not just as an isolated area. I found it really interesting to meet new people and find out what they knew and thought about Korea. This would never have happened if I had stayed in Korea. I never thought about South America before coming to Canada, but now some of my closest friends are from South America. I even know where their countries are on a world map now. This is an amazing feat for someone who didn’t even know there were countries outside Korea, other than Japan and China. Sometimes, I am proud of being Korean and am impressed when I see brand names such as; Samsung, Hyundai, LG, etc, on display. It tells me Korea has a strong presence in the global market place. Yet, on the other hand I and extremely embarrassed whenever I see or hear about a bad Korean. I am also dismayed to find that Japanese food such as sushi and miso soup have become so popular and common here in Canada, whereas Korean food has not yet caught on. Even more disappointing is that so many Koreans open Japanese restaurants‌ it a real kick in the ass. Another aspect of cultural difference that I have learned is that it is rude to take off your shoes in public places, and age is not a limiting business or social factor. In fact, it is illegal to ask a person about their age, sex, or religion for employment in Canada. Yet, in Korea it is the norm. I have even heard that asking blood type is rude in Canada.
