M
INJI LEE
I was born and raised in Korea. I lived and studied in Vancouver, Canada, until I graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design with a BFA in 2010. While my fine arts undergrad experience shaped me as an artistic, open-minded individual, I realized that I wanted to become an influential person who can use their creative abilities to make a positive impact on people’s lives. I wanted to focus on the functionality of how we use spaces in our daily lives, so I decided to study interior design. I will be graduating from Academy of Art University in May, with an MFA degree in Interior Architecture and Design. I enjoyed working on commercial, retail and hospitality projects in school, and I hope to build my career in those fields.

PROJECT TYPE:
Retail (Re-branding of Macy’s women’s shoe department)
PROJECT LOCATION:
San Francisco, USA
OVERALL CONCEPT:
Women are simple yet complicated, beautiful, loveable, and sophisticated. The concept of ‘FEMININITY’ and ‘MYSTERIOUSNESS’ is applied throughout the newly designed women’s shoe store for Macy’s.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
The concept of this shoe store was inspired by the following quote by Dean Jackson. This quote perfectly expresses the nature of women. “She is an intriguing blend of simplicity and complexity A recipe to be loved, but never revealed”

VIEW OF THE MAIN ENTRY The overall atmosphere is clean and light. Pops of color draw the eye to the focal points, and aid in the store circulation. Different display levels, layers of sheer materials, and a variety of textures and patterns add complexity to the simple store design.

VIEW OF THE MAIN ENTRY Wide entry with multiple access points provides an inviting characteristic to the store. The cash wrap is hidden behind the LED display wall. Therefore, the full attention of staff is needed among the shopping area. Staff keeps an eye out for security, as well as people who need assistance in trying on shoes and payment.
Project 1 >> Retail

VIEW OF THE MAIN DISPLAY AREA Soft lights, flowy sheer fabric, and reflective surfaces evoke a feminine atmosphere. Decorative elements, such as flower vases can be removed or changed for variety. The store feels spacious, and plenty of comfortable seats are provided, so customers feel welcome to take their time to browse and shop.
Project 1 >> Retail

VIEW OF THE LED WALL AND MAGIC MIRROR The west wall of the store is an LED screen that plays their brand promotion video, which is a series of abstract images, such as close up of flowers. There is also a magic mirror integrated into the LED wall. It can be used as a regular mirror, but interactive contents will appear as people walk up close to it. The magic mirror allows customers to browse the shoes in stock, check prices, and also get suggestions for whole outfits and other shoe options. They can purchase any item shown on the mirror, in which case the items will be delivered to their home.

PACKAGING DESIGN The packaging resembles the clean, feminine theme of the store. The pattern of print and ribbon used for the shoe box is the same as the light fixture. The shopping bag is translucent, and has pink tissue paper in it. They are designed so that when they bring these items home, they remember the store and the experience.

OCTAGONO URBAN RESORT
PROJECT TYPE:
Hospitality (5 Star Urban Resort)
PROJECT LOCATION:
Barcelona, Spain
OVERALL CONCEPT:
Co-existence of ‘OLD AND NEW’ is an instantly recognizable characteristic of Barcelona. It is evident in their architecture, culture, and food. Focusing on the togetherness of historic and contemporary culture, this project was inspired by the ‘OCTAGON’ blocks of the L’Eixample district.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
The design of this project was inspired by several aspects of the L’Eixample district in Barcelona. The creation of these octagon blocks began the urbanization of Barcelona, so this contemporary project is an homage to the history of the city. The octagon shape seen from above is also used throughout the whole project.

Translucent glass partition in the dining area has a printed image of traditional Spanish clothing. It is oversized for an abstracted modern look. In the ground floor elevation, you can see the mosaic backdrop in the reception area. This is to hint at the historic elements in the city Barcelona, such as Gaudi’s park. The different materials on the wall create a pattern that leads the visitors towards the lounge, elevators, bar and restaurant.

POTRERO BRANCH LIBRARY
PROJECT TYPE:
Commercial (Library Renovation, Group Project)
PROJECT LOCATION:
San Francisco, USA
OVERALL CONCEPT:
As the skill of making paper developed, so did the technology of printing. The technology of printing advanced, and it allowed for more efficient reproduction and sharing of information. ‘MOVABLE TYPE’ symbolizes the beginnings of the easy access to information for all. Today, we take advantage of the technology and efficiency that provides us with instant access to basically any information we are looking for. The design elements for the new Potrero Branch Library will be an homage to the humble beginnings of printing technology.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
The design elements of this project are inspired by the shapes of movable type. The varying height and depth of type pieces are introduced in the shelves, seats, and lighting fixtures. The concept is visible not only in the perspective views, but also on the floor plan and the ceilings.

BOUTIQUE HOTEL
PROJECT TYPE:
Multi-use (Hotel and Restaurant)
PROJECT LOCATION:
Oakland, USA
OVERALL CONCEPT:
The notion of travel, destination, and experience is manifested in design elements inspired by the ‘GOLD RUSH ERA’. The concept of ‘JOURNEY’ to California for gold is used for this project, since the main user group of the new hotel is going to be travelling tech-savvy business individuals. The concept is also reflected in today’s technology boom in the Bay Area.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
Within the hotel’s public spaces, guests will be submerged in spaces that reveal a sense of direction, pathways, and destinations. The design features are derived from different elements of gold rush, such as the clipper ship, the route to California, and the tools used by miners.

Around The Horn restaurant and bar, located on the first floor, is not only open to the guests of the hotel, but also to locals and tourists. The name, Around The Horn, refers to the route of the California bound ships that came around the Cape Horn during the gold rush. The backdrop of the reception area is inspired by the sails on clipper ships, and the bar area ceiling and the counter are inspired by the base of clipper ships. The column has photos of miners of the gold rush era, as an homage to the history of the area.
