The Wave

; Water Research Laboratory, Chicago This project, planned very near the Michigan Lake in Chicago, is a water research laboratory. The program consists of water laboratories, conference rooms, library, lecture hall, green house, and other public facilities such as cafĂŠ, observatory, and gift shop. The special aspect of the project is continuing lake view from the site to urban fabric and using water wave profile at the building section. To continue the lake view from urban fabric, the building is divided four masses by each function; scientist, conference, public, and cafĂŠ mass. The masses are connected by curved bridge masses, which have very contrast against the rectangle four main masses. Therefore, the city has lake view through the gaps between the masses. Moreover, the whole building is situated over three feet from the ground level because some parts of the site have water spaces from the lake. Therefore, the bridge masses are floated on the water space like real bridges.

To have the water image, I chose the water wave shape at the building section. Even though the building has rigid mass line on the plan, the section is very dynamic with the water wave shape. Since it has sectional variations at each mass, the building looks like four different water waves and it has unique spaces. The building has two building functions; one is programs for scientists and another is for public. From the northern part, first and second masses are mainly for scientists and third and fourth masses are for public. In the first and second masses, there are water laboratories, library, office, guest lounge, and conference rooms. Especially, library and guest lounge are located adjacent to the water. In the public masses, there are lecture hall, exhibition spaces, green house, cafĂŠ, and gift shop. With the water wave sections, the building has beautiful atrium or great exhibition space. The water research laboratory is planned in harmony with urban context and the Michigan Lake. Therefore, the building makes this area a new landmark in Chicago.

Water Wave Shape; Physical Model

To have the water image, I chose the water wave shape at the building section. Even though the building has rigid mass line on the plan, the section is very dynamic with the water wave shape. Since it has sectional variations at each mass, the building looks like four different water waves and it has unique spaces. Moreover, the whole building is situated over three feet from the ground level because some parts of the site have water spaces from the lake. Therefore, the bridge masses are floated on the water space like real bridges.

Plan for the Scientist and Public The composition of masses have a purpose to secure a view from the Lakeshore drive to Michigan lake. Drivers can see the lake between the masses. Also, the dynamic water wave shape will give special experience to people who see the lake. However, from the Lake, the building will show streight shape with the Chicago skyline.

SITE PLAN SKETCH

This project, planned in front of the Mary Park on Monroe Street in Chicago, is a Music Conservatory building. The program consists of a Concert auditorium, Café, Facilities for audiences, library, practice rooms, and class rooms. The design concept of the project is expanding the green space from the Mary Park which is situated in front of the project site. In the urban point of view, the building will be able to a great cultural site in the west loop with the park and the Concert auditorium. To expand the green space, the building takes a “sloped green roof” which is declined from the park level. Therefore, residents and students can fully feel and expert the green as if they stand in front of the mountain. Also, they can naturally approach the sloped roof and enjoy the exterior activities such as taking the nap, playing the instruments, and hanging out with their friends. Eventually, the building has a sloped green roof does not only expands the green from the park, but it also enhances the park activities.

The function of the building is separated by three; Space for students, audiences, and performers. Each has their own entrances and their own circulations. The auditorium is situated in the medium and it divided the space between students and audiences. The east side where is Existing conservatory building and the back side of the auditorium are for the students’ programs, and the west side is for audiences’ programs. Thus, building has two entrances and two circulation cores in west and east side. Particularly, the west side of audience mass is declined opposite side with the green roof to indicate the entrance easily for audiences who come to building at first time. Also, invited performers can approach to the rear of the building where has parking lots, and they could go to basement floor directly, using the circulation cores. In the basement floor, there is a rehearsal room and preparation room which is connected with stage of the concert auditorium. The music conservatory is planned in harmony with the function of the conservatory, the concert auditorium and the park with green roof. Therefore, this building makes this area a new landmark in the west loop.

Site Analysis & New Layers The idea of rehabiliation of the site is covering new layers at existing condtion. The target site has lots of black metropolitan landmarks as well as modernism architectures with IIT campus and has a part of Emerald Necklace of Chicago city. New layers do not adopt the grid system in current urban fabric but it is the diagonal lines which contains animated green spaces, pedestrian friendly streets and new bike trails. It is possible with many vacant lands and abandoned buildings in this area. The vacant lands was the target of crime site. However, with the new shape of the Emerald Necklace layer, which will transform the area from high crime and low density site to vital and active tourism site. Also, it will contribute to perform the goal of Chicago is making the destination city giving the unique exeriences for the tourists. Bike Trail & Pedestrian The new shape of the green strip has diagonal shape in urban fabric and it is composed with infrastructure for pedestrians and new transportation method, bicycle. Chicago has just started the DIVVY bike sharing system so that they are constructing many infra sturcture such as bike lanes and bike stations. The new pedestrian and bike friendly street can refer to green strip because it has green strips and small green poket park with the existing landmarks. The green strips are of course linked with many landmarks in this area which are low evaluated and sometimes abondoned although it has great historial trace for the black metropoitan and modernism era. However, the new shape of the Emerald Necklacemakes the area as the new tourism spot in Chicago area.

re-Membering

_Upper Level Plan

The “Mercado de la Cebada” was first built on 1875 by King Alfonso XII using iron structures. In 1958 the current market was constructed due to hygienic problems. The market itself is currently an iconic landmark of Madrid with history. However, the sports center which was next to the market has been demolished and is currently a vacant lot used by the community of Madrid. The proposed design is to “Re-Member” the history by keeping the existing market and to connect the surroundings of the site. The “Agora” w hich is the main stream that penetrates the market is connected with Calle Toledo. Also, by connecting the subway station with the small businesses at Calle Cebada would help them “Re-Vive” which would bu ild a healthier neighborhood.out with their friends. The urban area expanded to the border of DMZ as much as we are far from the moment of sorrow. As the result, the money oriented situation eventually touches the “Imjin Li where has the painful trace from the ineffaceable historical accident. This project is dealt with how we can live in the center of such abnormal circumstance in the invisible conflicts. This goal of this project is illuminating the conflict between before and after the war in the peaceful riverside village in terms of the agreement. The important aspect of the project is the wrong agree-

ments and the low-estimated identity will be exposed by each accident which is transformed by activities, and the cumulated individual experiences with the activities will make the Imjin River special at the observatory platform. Also, the experience will be very active and flexible by seasonal changes and the rehabilitating process of the water stream, which will play as an algorism to occur various types of agreements in the Imjin Li. With the process of the self-awareness of the river, the Imjin Li will be able to stand for the prototype of DMZ observation platform. Competition Work

MEDIUM

EXPANDED

This pavilion is Revit project. It is an experiment to study the ability of generic modeling with Revit program. The dinamic shape can be made by “the curtain panel pattern family” base on “the Conceptual mass family”. It is very initial parametric design but it was good experience to study broader possibility of Revit program rather than only box shape modeling. When it comes to the pavilion design, each square module is composed by the flexible material which can be shrunk or expanded by the heat gain. It could seem like the blooming flowers as the day temperature is changed.

This project, planned along the Mediterranean coast in the northern African region, in Libya, is a resorttype residential development based on regional characteristics. The program consists of a hotel, villa and apartments with a market and other infrastructure facilities for the local community. A special aspect of the project is in the use of the

natural topography and site conditions of the region. Facilities are allocated in optimum locations, taking advantage of the various levels of the site. Each f acility has its own individual advantages and characteristics. The hotel facility will provide different option for lodging, adjacent to the Mediterranean ocean within the natural environment. The hotel villa, along

with hotel services will provide various choices of leisure activities. With these facilities villa, apartment and community centre are planned in harmony with the natural environment and culture. Therefore, this master plan makes this area a new landmark facility in the region.

Elevation Studies While the contemporary architecture puts emphasis on technology, Libyans were willing to put their traditional environment and Islamic culture into their project. My team encountered significant problems with the project since we were not familliered with the Islamic culture. Although my team members and I had a difficult time learning about Islamic culture and Libyan traditional architecture including streets, urban text, and even history with innumerable researches, that experience lead our project successful.
