Rescuing Local Women & Children From Crisis Situations
“Sara” was brought to Minneapolis from overseas five years ago against her will for “unholy reasons,” according to her family advocate. When she was impregnated, Sara was put out on the street with nowhere to live. Alone and vulnerable, Sara was taken in by another predator who put Sara and her baby girl in a dirty basement with nothing but a mattress, mold and roaches. Sara’s exploitation continued in that basement until the birth of her second daughter. fter four years of living in fear, Sara was contacted by a family advocate who had learned of the situation. Finally, Sara had a reason to be hopeful as the advocate pulled her and her children from the uninhabitable basement and all that it represented. In need of emergency assistance to find Sara safe housing, the advocate turned to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation for help. The Federation worked with Sara’s advocate and a local agency to pay for three months rent in an apartment where Sara and her two little girls can feel safe. Now that Sara no longer has to be concerned about where her family will sleep at night, she is looking forward to getting back on her feet, enrolling in an alternative high school program, and becoming a U.S. citizen. Since the Federation launched its Women and Children in Crisis Fund earlier this winter, urgent phone calls and requests like this one have been coming in on a daily basis. Ninety-four thousand dollars has already been distributed to 110 local women. “Stories like Sara’s are unthinkable,” says Wendy Clyman of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation. “From single women who are unable to afford groceries and medicine to single mothers who are unable to pay their rent and air conditioning bills – these are emergency situations we are dealing with nearly every day. These women have nowhere else to turn; and they are so thankful when they learn that we can help them.” Each time a request comes in for assistance through the fund, a committee reviews the requests and validates the need. “We make sure to respond to each request within 24 hours whenever possible.” Wendy says that the urgency of the needs oftentimes can’t wait longer than that. “Many of the women who contact us are in threat of immediate eviction or having their utilities cut off,” Wendy explains.
Women Helping Women Continued high unemployment, significant foreclosure rates, and a shrinking government “safety net” prompted an anonymous donor to present a 3-year $50,000 gift match challenge to support women and children in crisis. At the time, Cindy Shapiro was Campaign Chair for the Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy Divisio and saw this gift match as an opportunity to encourage women in our community to help other women in need. “So many of us can relate to children, and the idea of children not having their basic needs met - food, housing, medicine – is unimaginable,” Cindy explains. “For the cost of a cup of coffee, how can we not help children and single women or mothers who are in need?”
Cindy posed that question to women in our community and the response was incredible. She found that women were eager to support this cause. Thanks to the incredible support of Women’s Philanthropy and other generous donors in our community, the first two years of the anonymous gift challenge have been met, and the third year is almost fully funded. In total, over three years the Women and Children in Crisis Fund will distribute more than $300,000 in emergency financial assistance to help struggling women get back on their feet. If you know someone who is in need of assistance email: emergency@mplsfed.org.

Introducing‌ The Jewish Community of the Future Strategic Priorities Bring Focus and Shared Vision to Jewish Minneapolis
Following six months of research, focus groups, surveys and analysis led by David Orbuch, Strategic Imperatives Committee chair, we are excited to reveal the Minneapolis Jewish community of the future. A community that understands there is a new generation yearning for meaningful ways to embrace Jewish life on their terms. A community that believes inspired Jewish philanthropy and strong leadership will change the world and shape our future. A community that sees no geographic boundaries when it comes to social responsibility. And, a community that values, celebrates and nurtures its connections with Israel and global Jewry.
The Jewish community of the future is anchored by five priorities:
Create a community of shared responsibility We commit to continuing our long-standing tradition of feeding, clothing, sheltering, counseling and rescuing thousands of people here at home, in Israel and around the world.
Engage the next generation in Jewish life We commit to encouraging young Jews to make Jewish choices for themselves and their children and to creating a community that will attract future generations to identify, affiliate, participate and support.
Strengthen our connection to Israel and Jewish peoplehood We commit to strengthening, deepening and expanding our connections to Israel and global Jewry through advocacy, personal experiences and high-impact programming.
Enhance & deepen the commitment to Jewish philanthropy We commit to educating our community to strengthen the linkage between philanthropy and community needs through creative programming and hands-on experiences.
Broaden leadership excellence We commit to creating an environment of innovation for community leaders and to establishing pathways for emerging leaders to rise, succeed and lead our community into the future.
Our goal is to maximize the efficient and effective use of community resources in alignment with these priorities, and encourage collaboration, innovation, increased philanthropy and accountability in working toward our shared community vision for the next decade. This summer, the Federation is reshaping its structure and areas of focus to support these priorities and position our community for success and impact.
We invite you to be a part of the Jewish community of the future.

Fighting Breast Cancer in Rural Hungary
“If “If II had had not not attended attended this this screening, screening, II could could have have died died in in three three months.” months.” eventeen women stood between Eva and her first mammogram; a mammogram that would change Eva’s life forever. The line moved slowly at the mobile screening unit, which was making its first visit to Kiskoros, Hungary. The opportunities for women to receive cancer screenings in this remote Hungarian town were rare, and the turnout on this sunny day was significant. In fact, the turnout was so significant that Eva decided to leave. The line was moving slowly and the 52 year-old working mother of two was already late for a meeting. As she began to walk away, a screening assistant stopped her and encouraged her to set up an appointment for later that week after work. If not, she warned, Eva would have to wait until next year for this important medical exam. Eva took the advice and scheduled a mammogram for the end of the week. The call that changed everything Three days after Eva’s initial mammogram, she received a call asking her to come back for another examination and biopsy. Although she performed breast self-exams regularly, the mammogram found a cancerous tumor so deep that she couldn’t possibly have discovered it herself. Within the month, Eva had the tumor surgically removed and began chemotherapy. “When the weeks of worrying and shock were over, I called to thank the head of the mobile screening unit,” recalls Eva. “She told me that if I had not attended this screening, I could have died in three months.” Eva considers herself lucky that the tumor was found when it was. The mobile mammogram unit was brought to Eva’s town by the Women’s Health Empowerment Program (WHEP), a
Federation-supported initiative of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). Through a unique partnership between JDC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the program gives underserved women in Hungary, Bosnia, Montenegro and Russia access to vital health services. In Hungary, 4,500 women in 42 remote locations have received breast cancer screenings since 2007. “Early detection can mean the difference between life and death,” says Marianna Jó, JDC Program Manager of WHEP in Hungary. “Unfortunately, there is a 10-year gap in life expectancy between majority and minority populations in our country.” This phenomenon is perpetuated by a lack of access to health services among populations living in remote areas in deep poverty and facing long-standing discrimination. When the mobile mammography unit returned to Kiskoros a year later, Eva, in remission and grateful for the rapid response of the WHEP staff, volunteered her support and experience to newly diagnosed women. “I could explain to women all these things I did not know when I got ill,” she says. “I was so happy I could help these women, to listen to them and to their needs.” Established in 1994, the Women’s Health Empowerment Program uses a “peer support” model, training women who have had breast cancer to turn their illness and struggle into an opportunity to support one another. WHEP also provides education to encourage the early detection of breast cancer, creates support groups and hotlines, strengthens doctor to patient communication, and facilitates partnerships among government agencies, non government organizations, and the medical community. jewishminneapolis.org

Aiding Greece’s Jewish Community
Mission to Greece brings young philathropist’s experience full circle Not long ago, if you told Darren Lederfine he would someday be returning from a mission to Greece with the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), he would have been doubtful. If you mentioned that Greece would be his fourth mission, he might have laughed. Darren, now a member of Federation’s National Young Leadership Cabinet*, was once a reluctant participant in Jewish life. When he found his place, however, his life changed significantly. *National Young Leadership Cabinet is a group of young adults from across the country who are deeply committed to the future of the Jewish people in North America, Israel, and around the world.

OVERSEAS Today, Darren speaks passionately and intelligently about Jews across the world. His latest experiencebegan in Thessaloniki, Greece, once known as the hub for Sephardic Judaism in Europe. The 50,000 Jewish citizens in Thessaloniki had access to 32 synagogues when the Nazis invaded; today, just 1,000 Jews live there. Only 5,000 Jews live in the entire country. Darren was shocked by the devastation and how little he knew of it. “The percentage of the population destroyed in Greece really illustrates the horrors and devastation of the Holocaust,” he says, “and no one tells the story of the Holocaust for Sephardic Jews.” Armed with new knowledge of Greek history, Darren and young Jewish leaders from across the country had once- in-a-lifetime opportunities to discuss the current economic and political crisis with important political figures. “We had lunch with the American Ambassador to Greece and dinner in the house of the Israeli Ambassador. We don’t fool around,” Darren jokes. But he grows serious when discussing the crisis. “Unemployment is high. Unless the country takes drastic action, soon, they will continue to be in big trouble.” The Jewish community is not excluded; many are unemployed and living below the poverty line. In Athens, Jewish museums, synagogues and soup kitchens struggle to remain open. Coupled with a growing Neo-Nazi movement – extremist group Golden Dawn won 7% of the vote in this year’s elections, giving it 21 seats in Parliament – the turmoil of Jews in Greece is apparent. The silver lining, Darren notes, is that aid exists. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), in partnership with the Federation, is leading global partners in meeting the needs of the Jewish community in Greece. Darren had the chance to meet community members receiving rent subsidies, food, and school supplies thanks to Federation’s support of overseas relief efforts. Additionally, the Federation’s partner, the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), recently committed to providing $1 million to Greece, part of which will support programs to strengthen ties with Israel and facilitate aliyah. “I was impressed by how important Israel is to the Jewish community in Greece right now,” Darren says. Seeing this aid and support from JAFI and JDC meant a lot to Darren. It reminded him of his first experience with the Federation, a Young Leadership event hosted by the Minneapolis Jewish Federation over ten years ago. At the insistence of a friend, Darren reluctantly attended what would become for him a life-changing presentation by Dr. Rick Hodes, who spoke about humanitarian efforts in Ethiopia. Although Darren was passionate about philanthropy, his connection to his Jewish identity was shaky and he was unaware of what the Federation’s role might be. “When the doctor explained that his work could not be done without donations from the Federation, I had an ‘a-ha!’ moment. I suddenly realized the importance of giving to the Federation and I knew that I wanted to get involved.” Since then, Darren’s involvement with the Federation and his commitment to the Jewish community has only strengthened. In 2006 he participated in a National Young Leadership mission to Tel Aviv. Although it was his first trip to Israel he immediately felt a connection, which prompted him to intensify his involvement with his community upon his return. Eventually he became the chair of Young Leadership in Minneapolis and led a summer mission to Israel. Being a part of bringing young adults to Israel for the first time struck Darren as the most defining experience in his philanthropic career. “The best part was to see the excitement in their eyes, to actually feel their excitement for the experience,” he recalls. For Darren, this is what involvement with the Federation is all about – building community and helping members of the next generation discover the experiences and connections that have meant so much to him. Darren stumbled upon his passion through a persistent friend, and is ready to do the same for others. “If I can get more people involved, then together we can all make the world a better place.”
“The Jewish community is not excluded; many are unemployed and living below the poverty line. In Athens, Jewish museums, synagogues and soup kitchens struggle to remain open.”
Facts About Greece Jewish History: More than 85% of Greek Jews perished during the Second World War, and most of the survivors immigrated to Israel. General Population: 11.2 million Jewish Population: 5,000 island Count: The counts vary. There are about 140 inhabited islands in Greece, but if you count every rocky outcrop, the total surges to about 3,000. economic crisis: Like most of Greece, the Jewish community of Athens is in financial crisis, with its income down, its reserves spent, new taxes implemented and out-of-work Jews turning to the community for welfare assistance. Federation is helping to: • Save the poorest Greek Jews by supplying food, shelter and other relief services to elderly who are struggling to survive on plummeting pensions. A Federation-JDC partnership is leading the global Jewish effort to secure crisis-related social services for children in need, young families, and other adults thrust into poverty by job loss or severely reduced incomes. • Develop tomorrow’s Jewish leaders by providing scholarships for young Jews whose families are no longer able to afford Jewish day school tuition due to their financial hardship. The Federation-JDC partnership also supports young Greek Jews’ participation in regional leadership retreats and camp programs, ensuring a future cadre of spirited young leaders for the community. Those dollars will help create, sustain and grow a vibrant, inclusive and supportive Jewish community. How do we decide each year where the dollars go? That’s easy. We don’t decide, you do! The Federation and community volunteers work year-round to ensure that your generous gift is helping as many people as possible, where the help is needed most. Here’s a quick glance at the life-changing work we are doing every moment of every day:
Jewish Life & Learning

Dear Minneapolis Jewish Federation: I am writing this note to thank the Minneapolis Jewish Federation for all the work you do. This is the third year that my children are attending Camp OLAMI at the Sabes JCC. My children both have autism and require an advocate to be with them so they can participate in camp activities. Because of the Federation and the generous contributions from the community my children are able to attend a Jewish camp and feel that they are part of the community. Edan is 11 years old and is non-verbal. He loves swimming and going on field trips and enjoys seeing the kind, friendly faces that greet him each day at camp. Natalie is 7 and is very happy and outgoing. She loves walking around with a picture schedule for the day and telling everyone what activity will happen next. Natalie loves swimming, singing, drama, arts and crafts, and field trips. As an Israeli, I was especially touched when she came home one day singing, “Hatikva” (the Israeli national anthem). I am very grateful to all who have contributed and allowed my children to enjoy a summer with their peers just being kids. Sometimes we forget that children with autism are children first and sometimes need to just have fun. This year we decided that instead of attending summer school, the kids would spend the whole summer at camp. I can say for sure that it was the right decision. Edan and Natalie wake up each morning excited to go to camp. Every Sunday, Natalie asks me if tomorrow she is going back to camp. Thank you so much for your continuous generosity for this very important cause. Sincerely,

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Q&A With Jerry Ribnick This August, Jerry Ribnick will conclude his two-year term as President of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation. Jerry’s passion for Jewish life, culture and community has been and will continue to be an inspiration. As we thank Jerry for everything he has done to strengthen our community, we asked him to reflect on a few highlights from his presidency:
Q: What were some of the most memorable moments from your term as Federation President? A: At the start of each year, I had the chance to reach out to new people and invite them to become members of the Board of Directors. It was reaffirming to me to see how excited and willing they were to become active participants in the Federation. Throughout the past two years, I had the opportunity to meet with so many individuals from different corners of our community. It is incredible how much people truly care – very deeply – about the future of the Minneapolis Jewish community. Q: What is something new that you learned about the Minneapolis Jewish community? A: We have many wonderful organizations with missions that play an important role in our community as a whole. But, like any community, especially in these trying financial times, we have some redundancies.
I really enjoyed working with all of the organizations to try and find ways to maximize resources to better serve the members of our whole community. Along the way, I discovered that the Federation is really the only organization that can bring everyone together to make this happen. Federation’s interest is the community interest. Q: What do you feel was the Board’s greatest accomplishment during your term? A: During the second year of my term, the Federation spearheaded a strategic prioritization process to crystallize a vision for our community. The resulting five priority areas (see page 4) reflect the most pressing needs of both today’s and tomorrow’s Jewish community. I was happy to see Federation take on this critical task. Now that the priorities have been approved by the Board, it will be incumbent on the Federation and our partners to work together to achieve our goals and make this an even stronger and more vibrant community. Q: What can we do to engage the next generation and make them interested in community leadership? A: We need to give the next generation the opportunity to understand how good it feels to be a community leader – and understand the impact that they can have by being a leader. I look around and feel great that I am doing my part; I hope others get to feel this way too. I’m glad that we reinstituted the Harry Kay Leadership Training Institute because if you look at the history of leadership in our community, the majority is past graduates of Harry Kay. I think this a step in the right direction. Please join us at the Minneapolis Jewish Federation Annual Meeting on August 15 to honor Jerry Ribnick for his service to the Jewish community and welcome incoming President Michael Barry.

Clara Ruth Kaner’s Legacy Leaves Hope and Opportunity for Jewish Children his winter, a Jewish child in need will have a warm coat and nutritious meals. Next fall, Jewish high school students who might otherwise have been unable to follow their dreams will start their first year at the University of Minnesota. For years to come, Jewish children and students in need will have opportunities they never thought possible - all because Clara Ruth Kaner understood that every penny she saved was a penny she could one day give away and change someone’s life. Clara was a prudent businesswoman with a purpose. “She was a big saver, very frugal,” remembers good friend Beth Krietzman, who recalls Clara frequently forgoing small treats like ice cream if she didn’t have a coupon. “She never spent a lot on herself, never acted like she had money.” Clara had a reason behind her spending habits, but she didn’t let her friends know her intentions. A successful buyer who retired working for the City of Minneapolis, Clara was a busy woman who cultivated her career in Duluth, San Francisco and Los Angeles. While in Minneapolis, Clara was a consistent supporter of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, making a gift each year to the Community Annual Campaign. Not only generous with her money, Clara donated hours of her time as a volunteer with the Saint Louis Park Schools. She spent countless afternoons reading stories and playing chess with elementary school children. “I didn’t meet her until after she retired,” says Beth, “but she must have been incredibly busy.” Her experiences with both the Federation and local schoolchildren touched Clara. When she passed away in April at age 93, she left in excess of one million dollars to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation to establish the Clara Ruth Kaner Children’s Fund, a designated fund at the Jewish Community Foundation. Clara’s fund will provide support for Jewish children in need who reside in Minnesota ranging from basic needs like food and clothing, to tuition assistance for undergraduate, law and medical students attending the University of Minnesota. The fund will also offer annual distributions to worthy programs such as the Jewish Family and Children’s Service’s Hag Sameach program, which delivers gift and ritual items to families in need during Chanukah and Passover. Clara knew that her chess opponents and story time pals would need her help long after she was gone, and every dollar she left to the fund represents a lifetime of saving and planning for this phenomenal and unexpected gift. “Clara really loved kids,” says Beth. “She saved every penny for this fund.”

Today, the screen light reveals a happy look of concentration as Benjamin updates his blog, eager to share his thoughts with readers and friends. At school, Benjamin appeared angry, frustrating his peers and teachers who found it difficult to get along with him. He had no friends and little support. When Benjamin’s insecurities and anger issues escalated, his school contacted Youth Futures to intervene. Youth Futures is a program for at-risk Israeli youth focused on breaking the cycle of poverty and distress in Israel’s peripheral towns. An initiative of the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) in partnership with the Federation, Youth Futures pairs “trustees” (Israeli young adults committed to life-changing work) with at-risk youth and their parents to serve as mentors, advocates, and voices of encouragement. This is exactly what Benjamin and his parents needed: an advocate for all three of them. Benjamin’s parents, so busy and stressed trying to put food on the table, barely communicated with their son. Isolated and hurt, Benjamin replaced much-needed parental love and support with his computer. Eventually, the anger inside began to get the best of him. The family’s trustee and Benjamin’s school counselor visited Benjamin and his parents at home. The team worked with the parents to teach them how to be more nurturing and

developed a plan that would help Benjamin develop his social skills so he could make new friends. It wasn’t long before Benjamin began to come out of his shell. The relationship between the family blossomed and the trustee made it clear that if Benjamin needed to talk to someone, she was always there. As the trustee and Benjamin became closer, she learned he was interested in sports and computers. She arranged for him to join a basketball team and set up sessions with a computer specialist. Through these caring individuals, Benjamin was able to combine the two things that made him happy and started a soccer blog. Without the services provided by Youth Futures, Benjamin might still be the depressed child he once was, struggling in school and at home. These days, after updating his blog, winning basketball games, and hanging out with his new friends, there is no time for Benjamin to hide. And that’s okay, because he no longer needs to. This year, 400 Youth Futures Trustees are working with 10,000 students and their families in 35 low-income communities thanks to an incredible partnership between the Federation and JAFI.

Visiting Israeli Soldiers Find Permanent Place In Minneapolis Hearts Three modern-day Jewish heroes visited our community this spring. Erez, Nir and Ligad are officers in the Paratroopers Reconnaissance Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). After meeting them in person, it is hard to imagine the extreme responsibility they carry on their shoulders every day. They are young, charismatic and full of life. They came here to teach our community about the human side of the IDF and learn about Jewish life in Minneapolis. Their visit is part of a unique partnership between the Federation’s Israel Center and Parallel Lives, an Israeli organization that strives to strengthen bonds between Israel and Jewish communities in the Diaspora.
During their two-week stay, the soldiers visited local schools, organizations and synagogues and participated in our community’s observance of Yom Hazikaron (Israel’s Remembrance Day) and celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day). They shared stories about life in Israel and the IDF and soaked up the passion and vibrancy of our Jewish community.
In Their Own Words
What our community is saying about our partnership with the soldiers: “Growing up in Israel, shouldering difficult responsibilities, these officers often feel isolated and maligned. They return to Israel after this visit with a sense of peoplehood, having participated in community ceremonies and celebrations, attending rich synagogue services and even reading the “prayer for the State of Israel” in front of congregations. They get connected and through new friendships and host families - they stay connected. They gain an understanding of how much we CARE.” --Zehorit Heilicher, Host Family
“I met them when they came to Bet Shalom to speak to the students there, and I invited them to go out and enjoy the night life in Minneapolis. We went out on a Saturday night and had a great time. I was surprised by how young in age they were, but how old in maturity. Serving in the IDF seems to make them so much more mature than American people in their early twenties. That being said, I also found out that they can act just like American 20 year olds – they go out and socialize and have fun like anyone else.” - Seth Salenger
“It was a fun and unique experience to be able to spend the afternoon with them and get to know them on a more personal level. I took them to hang out down by the University of Minnesota. It was great to form a connection that hopefully will continue beyond their short stay here in the States.” -Brittany Beck

WE BELIEVE iN EACH OthER We believe that no child should go to bed hungry. That every senior in our community has the right to live with dignity. And that all Jews should be able to live without fear of persecution—anywhere in the world. That’s why the Jewish Federation’s annual fundraising campaign is so important. With your support, we can help people in need, rescue people in danger and keep our Jewish community vibrant and strong. Together we can do extraordinary things to make the world a better place.
