From the Editor A good time was had by all at the 12to12 MBOTMA Fundraiser (JedFest) back on January 23. A big thanks goes out to all who helped make the day a rousing success, especially Jana Metge, who coordinated the whole day! Thanks to all the bands that donated their time, the people who organized the silent auction, and the people who set up and tore down. This is a great community of people who love bluegrass and old-time music. That was very evident that day. It was great to see all of the people thanking Jed for his service over the years. As winter is in the last stages of throwing at us what it can, we are getting ready for the Winter Bluegrass Weekend, and what a fine weekend it will be. And, you can read all about it here! Check out the article on Danny Paisley and Southern Grass, who will serve up for us a fine rendition of traditional bluegrass and old-time at the Saturday evening concert. Over 40 bands will provide us non-stop shows from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. The showcases will exhibit the wealth of bluegrass and old-time bands in the region. The Sunny Mountain Serenaders will delight you in the dance hall downstairs, not only with the dance they are playing at on Saturday evening, but workshops and a concert in the afternoon. It isn’t often enough that we get to hear such fine purveyors of bluegrass and old-time music! Jams, workshops, dances, shows, there will be too much to see it all, so come prepared to make some tough choices! MBOTMA has a new executive director, Arne Brogger. Check out the article on him and greet him at the WBW. See you all at the WBW and remember, it won’t be long before we’re sitting in the sun (or rain…) listening to great music!! Doug Lohman, IBCNU! Meet Arne Brogger, the New Executive Director of MBOTMA by Peter Albrecht

March 2016

was the business manager for a nonprofit recovery house in Athens, Ohio. Arne decided to move back to the Twin Cities in order to be closer to family and old friends, and we feel we were lucky to be able to offer him the executive director position when we did. In addition to his history in the music business and his business skills, Arne is a delightful man, full of enthusiasm for his new position with us. He has already met extensively with Jed and Bea, as well as with the Board of Directors, many committee chairs and others in MBOTMA. He will, of course, be at all MBOTMA functions, and you should make a point of meeting him if you can. We’ll try to get him to wear a name tag so you can step up and introduce yourself and help welcome him into our music community.

MinnesotaBluegrass.org

As you are all aware, Jed resigned as executive director for MBOTMA after serving in that position for nearly three decades. A search committee was established and was chaired by board member Kenneth Bloch. After reviewing a good number of applications from a good number of qualified people, and interviewing a few of them, the search committee recommended to the Board that we contract with Arne Brogger to become the new executive director. The Board did so, and Arne began on February 1st of this year. Here is a brief history and description of who Arne is. Arne was born and raised in Minneapolis, attending University High in the ‘60s. He says that traditional music was “the siren song” that first drew him to music and is still what he listens to today. He is not a musician himself, but nearly all of his friends in the Twin Cities are either musicians or otherwise involved in the entertainment industry. Arne has been involved in the music business most of his life, as an agent, promoter, and in event production. Upon graduating from college he joined a small booking agency (Schon Productions) in Minneapolis, booking local bands in colleges. In 1972 he organized, managed and booked (with help from others at Schon) “the Memphis Blues Caravan,” which consisted of a number of well-known blues artists who toured both nationally and internationally. In 1979 he joined Variety Artists in its Minneapolis office representing, among others, Ricky Scaggs early in his career. In the 1980s Arne moved to New York, opening his own agency. His agency was eventually taken over by the New York office of APA (Agency for the Performing Arts), where Arne stayed on until the late nights and an “atmosphere not conducive to family life” led him to leave the music business. For a number of years he worked in business, and most recently

Danny Paisley and Southern Grass to headline WBW Concert

March 2016

Danny grew up listening to the music his father Bob played and enjoyed hearing the sounds of classic bluegrass, like Red Allen, Mac Martin, Bill Monroe, the Stanleys, Reno and Smiley, and the Osbornes, as well as old-time mountain music and traditional country music. Once you hear Danny sing, it comes as no surprise that he lists George Jones and Vern Gosdin as major influences in his singing. Danny joined Southern Grass in 1974. The band also was composed of Ted Lundy’s sons, TJ and Bob. He took over as leader of Southern Grass in 2004 after his dad’s death and worked for a while with his brother, Michael, on bass. Southern Grass today continues the father/son tradition with Danny’s son, Ryan, playing mandolin. They are also

joined by TJ Lundy on fiddle, Mark Delaney on banjo, and Eric Troutman on bass. If you love hard-driving, traditional bluegrass and old-time music, don’t miss Southern Grass.

Danny Paisley and Southern Grass will be our guests this year as headliners for the Saturday evening concert at MBOTMA’s Winter Bluegrass Weekend. Danny comes from great bluegrass heritage and has been immersed in performing bluegrass since he was very young, joining his father’s band, Bob Paisley and Southern Grass, at the age of 14. Bob Paisley had a 50 year career as leader of one of America’s premier traditional bluegrass bands, Southern Grass. Bob teamed up with banjo player Ted Lundy (another famous family name in bluegrass and mountain music) in the 1960s to form the Southern Mountain Boys and then Southern Grass. They became a respected and favorite band on both the folk and bluegrass circuits.

Welcome the Sunny Mountain Serenaders to the Winter Bluegrass Weekend’s Deering Dance Hall Stage

March 2016

Native Virginian Mac Traynham, who plays banjo and harmonica and sings lead with the Serenaders, may be best known for the soulful tight-harmony duets that he sings and plays with his wife, Jenny. He’s another guy who’s papered his walls with fiddlers convention prize ribbons. Mac lives in the country, near Floyd, VA, and is a full-time musician, banjo builder, cabinetmaker, and farmer. John Schwab is the guy who literally wrote the book on playing old-time backup guitar. He’s anchored the rhythm sections of several fine bands, including The Hoover Uprights, who took the blue ribbon in the traditional band contest at Clifftop in 2001 and again in 2003. John plays his old Gibson archtop guitar and sings harmony with the Serenaders. They will be teaching workshops on Saturday at 1pm, a jam at 2pm and a concert at 3:30pm. They will play for the square dance from 7-9pm that evening.

Sit back, close your eyes, and open your ears to The Sunny Mountain Serenaders. You’ll be transported back to the Blue Ridge Mountains of the 1920s. Well ... all except for the crackle and clicks that haunt those old 78 rpm records. Get ready to hear some traditional old-time songs and tunes played in the old-time way! The Sunny Mountain Serenaders feature three of the most accomplished, steeped-in-the-tradition old-time musicians you’ll find anywhere. Mark Campbell, who was raised in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, has won many ribbons at Southern fiddle contests, including 1st Prize at Clifftop in 2001. He is an unrepentant booster of Virginia music and a long-time musical mentor to scores of folks in the Richmond area. When he’s not playing with the Serenaders, Mark enjoys playing with his wife and daughters, known collectively as The Campbell Family Band. Mark also is an accomplished landscape painter.

Grass Seeds 2016 Guitar, Fiddle, Banjo, Mandolin, Dobro and Bass By Sandi Pidel

Grass Seeds and GS2 are MBOTMA sponsored youth workshops held in conjunction with the Winter Bluegrass Weekend. This will be our thirteenth year! We meet for one session Friday night, two on Saturday and one Sunday morning. The kids then have the opportunity to show us all they have learned with a concert on Sunday at 1:00pm. Some of the things we work on are jamming etiquette, ensemble playing, how to play back-up and take a lead break on your instrument, plus singing lead and harmony vocals. The kids have a lot of fun, but they work hard too. Grass Seeds is NOT just for beginners or “little kids,” nor are we only looking for those really talented kids. If you can play a few common chords or fiddle a few tunes, or if you are a really “hot picker” between the ages of 8 and 18 - or so, there is a place for you at Grass Seeds. We spend most of the weekend in small groups. Each one becomes a “band” for the weekend, so there is plenty of room for all skill levels.

We do our best to group kids according to ability and comfort level, so a band can be as few as 3 or as many as 7 or 8 kids in any combination of instruments. One of the requirements for GS2 is to be at least 14; however teenagers are not limited to that group. Less experienced older players typically benefit more from Grass Seeds. At Grass Seeds, our main goal is fun. Our hope is that by creating a positive experience and the opportunity to build friendships, we will instill a love of the music, a sense of community and the desire to continue playing. Our faculty is always kid-friendly, local and accessible. We provide a non-competitive, friendly atmosphere for kids to meet and get to know people their age who enjoy the same music. Typically, by the end of the weekend, many phone numbers and email addresses have been exchanged and new Facebook friendships made. Our instructors are always local in hopes that you will bring your child to hear them throughout the year. We work on

a few common jam tunes and encourage everyone to go out and jam in the evenings. So if you see a young person out there with an instrument, please invite them to join in or stop and play a song or two with them. WHAT IS GS2? It has always been a struggle in Grass Seeds to accommodate such a wide variety of ages and ability levels. The past several years, we couldn’t help but notice how many young, advanced players are showing up at the festivals. There has also been an increase in the number of Grass Seeds registrations in the 14 to 18 year old age group, many who have attended Grass Seeds several times. It was obvious these older kids needed a very different, more age appropriate experience than we were offering in Grass Seeds. We needed to provide them with their own social experience and move away from teaching only the traditional bluegrass tunes; they clearly want to learn to play what they listen to. We experimented with a few

All musicians age 8 to 18 (or so) are invited to register for the Grass Seeds Music Academy during the Winter Bluegrass Weekend on March 4-6 at the Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West Hotel in Plymouth MN. You will learn jamming etiquette, ensemble playing, how to play back-up and take a break, lead and harmony vocals, as well as instruction on your own instrument. The workshop begins Friday night with registration and a jam to get ready for a full weekend of playing. different things, but didn’t really hit on anything that worked. That is until 2011, when we started GS2. Now in its sixth year, GS2 has been quite a success! These kids have had a great experience and are really an inspiration to the younger ones. Our goals for GS2 are the same as Grass Seeds and the structure of the weekend is pretty much the same, we are just raising the bar by including advanced instrumental technique, three and four part vocal harmonies and improvisation. GS2 decides as a group what songs to work on. We encourage them to choose more progressive songs from the contemporary artists they enjoy listening to. Then they get to work creating their own arrangement, not just reproducing it as recorded. They will really focus in on what it takes to be a member of a performing group. The discussion topics are also determined by the group so we can best meet the specific needs of the kids that year. The minimum age to participate in GS2 is 14 and space is limited to

about 10 students. We recommend at least 4 to 5 years of playing with a good working knowledge of common chords and scales. Basic instrumental technique should be solid and familiarity with ensemble playing is expected. Students must be able to learn quickly by ear. Previous participation in Grass Seeds is not required. Everyone who is interested in GS2 will participate in a jam session first thing Friday night; the instructors will make their decision at that time. All participants must register for Grass Seeds; we can not guarantee your child will be selected for GS2 at time of registration. There is no additional cost for GS2, and no refunds will be given if your child is not selected. GS2 will have the same schedule as Grass Seeds, and students will be required to perform in the concert on Sunday. OUR FACULTY This year Grass Seeds favorite, The High 48s (thehigh48s.com), winners of the 2009 Rockygrass band competition, will return as instructors. They were also a huge success as the faculty of jam camp

at the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Festival. Marty Marrone, Anthony Ihrig, Rich Casey, Mike Hedding and Eric Christopher will offer instruction on guitar, banjo, dobro, bass, mandolin and fiddle. The perennial favorite, Catie Jo Pidel, will return to teach fiddle as well. Her youthful energy and enthusiasm is absolutely infectious - the kids love her. This year Chris Silver (chrissilver. wix.com) will teach GS2. If there are strings on it, Chris plays it - and plays it well. Before The Chris Silver Band, he was a member of Stoney Lonesome and is also well known for his songwriting. Chris has firm roots in Bluegrass but has honed his own sound from many influences, making him perfect for GS2. REGISTRATION The registration fee for the 3-day workshop is $85 per student. This includes a weekend ticket to the festival and one ticket to the Saturday night Headline Concert (to be picked up at check-in on Friday night). Students can only register for one instrument. Be sure to register!

How do I get there? Where can I park? Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West 3131 Campus Dr, Plymouth MN

Exit I-494 at Hwy 55 (exit 22) and go East on 55 Turn North at Northwest Blvd (first set of lights) Then 1st left onto Campus Dr

Or take 2nd left onto Xenium & left again onto Campus Dr Parking Option #2 – North End From the northwest corner of the parking ramp follow the road around the back of the building to the north side. There is a large parking area. Enter the hotel through the fitness center entrances (there are doors on both the left and right side of the building as you approach from the parking lot). You can then walk the length of the building in heated comfort to the Main Lobby/Registration area.

Parking Option #1 – Main Parking Ramp Directly to the south of the Crown plaza is a two story parking ramp. The upper level is accessible on the west side just off of Campus Dr. The lower level is accessible from the north side directly across from the hotel. There is handicap parking in the lower level. Enter the hotel on the south side, down the stairs and in the door under the red canopy. Follow signs to the Lobby/Registration.

Parking Option #6 Three Rivers Park District Across the street from the Crowne Plaza is a large parking area behind the Three Rivers Park District building. Please be careful crossing the street.

MinnesotaBluegrass.org

Parking Option #4 – Street Parking There are no parking restrictions on Campus Drive, and parking is allowed on both sides. If you park here you can enter the hotel through the same entrance as for the main parking ramp - on the south side, down the stairs and in the door under the red canopy. Follow the signs to the lobby.

March 2016

Additional hotel room space has been reserved for WBW Festival attendees at the Best Western Kelly Inn on Hwy 55 (763-553-1600). Hotel shuttle rides will be available from there to the Crowne Plaza. The Residence Inn (763-5771600) is only 1/2 mile from the Crowne Plaza, a short walk on low traffic side streets. Front Entrance Drop Off You can drive in the front circular drive and drop off your passengers right at the front door, then park your vehicle elsewhere. Look for the hotel shuttles in the various parking areas and they will pick you up and drop you at this entrance.

NEW! Parking Option #3 – Atria Parking Lot Our neighbor Atria has once again given us permission to park in their lot. The entrance is across from the entrance to the upper level parking ramp. There is a lot of room here and it is convenient to the south entrance of the Crowne Plaza.

Parking Option #6 – Turck Neighborhood Parking There are several businesses just to the south of the Radisson Hotel that have graciously offered to let festival goers park for free. Look for the Turck parking lot and the other industrial lots around it. There is a walkway that leads straight to the Crowne. Watch for hotel shuttles to come pick you up.

What if the Crowne Plaza is full?

Parking Option #5 – More Street Parking The local police department has given us permission to park on the Crowne Plaza side of Xenium Lane despite the posted parking restrictions (unless we receive 2 inches or more of snow, then they need to plow). You can enter at the front entrance or south side entrance.

Jedfest The third week of January is statistically the coldest week of the year in Minnesota. It is a time when the only color is grey. But Minnesota bluegrass fans are unfazed by cold and drear. They plant their heels into a snow bank, and calmly introduce a streak of color into the midst of the bleak. In stark contrast to the winds that blow and the snow that swirls, there was Jedfest, providing all the technicolor fun a body could stand. It used to be that the Winter Bluegrass Weekend was what stood between the First of the Year and the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff (nee Spring Kickoff). Then it came to be that Cabin Fever and the Winter Bluegrass Weekend were what stood between the First and the Kickoff. Now it appears that Jedfest, or 12to12, which is what it was called in 2015, is what stands between the First of the Year and the Winter Bluegrass Weekend. Please take not that all of this expansion (and let’s include the Harvest Jam, too) came under the leadership of Jed Malischke. Jed led MBOTMA for twenty-nine years. At the start of Jed’s run, the August festival was already in place; all the other events were added under Jed’s leadership. Those who know Jed and the Association remark on Jed’s flair for organization, attention to detail, and the loyalty Jed has inspired. Jedfest was MBOTMA’s tribute to Jed. Hats off to Jed for a great run. Bluegrass Review in March Towards the beginning of the month, we’ll finish the series of conversations with Fred Bartenstein, noted bluegrass historian. Fred chose some great topics for our musical interviews: Carleton Haney, the great bluegrass promoter; the values associated with the first bluegrass audience; and the values associated with the audience entering the scene in the mid-1960s. We’ll continue presenting Ohio material later in the month. Bluegrass Review and Bluegrass Saturday Morning Online By the way, to catch any bluegrass review show, go to www. bluegrassreview.com. Click on the “programs” link at the top of the page and you well then have access to many show playlists. Scroll to the bottom of any playlist and you’ll see a player as well as a web address where the show is posted. Also, both Bluegrass Saturday Morning and the Bluegrass Review are archived at the website of KBEM-FM, www.jazz88fm.com. At the Jazz88 website, you can also download show segments to listen to once the show is over on KBEM-FM, 12 noon on Saturday. My Favorite Bluegrass on Bluegrass Saturday Morning “My Favorite Bluegrass” is the name of a Bluegrass Saturday Morning show segment where listeners self-elect to come on the show and play their favorite bluegrass and old-time CDs, and of course talk about them with the show host. The great part of the segment from my point of view is that listeners always seem to bring in songs not usually heard on Bluegrass Saturday Morning.

Tune transcription : JUNE APPLE I’ve transcribed a bluegrass version of June Apple for you. It’s a notey tune both in old-time and bluegrass versions. Tommy Jarrell’s You Tube of the tune is a great one if you’re interested in hearing a good old time rendering. Tommy also liked to sing verses in the A part while fiddling. This contribution of the tune leans more toward a bluegrass version. June Apple was one of the first tunes I learned on mandolin and guitar. It probably first came to my attention during the heyday of downtown Minneapolis street singing. I remember hearing the street trio of Peter Ostroushko, Jim Tordoff, and Dakota Dave Hull do it at a fast bluegrass tempo. I knew I needed to learn the tune. June Apple is related to the old time tune, Train on the Island. On a historical note, a number of us who were active musicians on the West Bank in the ‘70s were inspired by Utah Philips’ Wildflowers Co-op in Saratoga Springs. So we got together to form our own music co-op called the June Apple Musician’s Cooperative. We shared tunes, shows, gigging information, promoted one another, and even investigated health insurance for musicians. In 1977, the Co-op started putting out LP recordings on our own label called Train on the Island. If you’re someone who enjoys searching through old LP albums, you’ll find some good ones on that label from musicians you may recognize: Bob Bovee, Pop Wagner, Jerry Rau, Dakota Dave Hull, Sean Blackburn, Charlie Maguire, Gail Heil, and Maureen McElderry. So June Apple is a great tune to have in your bluegrass repertoire if you don’t have it already. It lends itself well to improvisation and is heard not uncommonly at picking contests. Go for it at a good clip! If you have questions, please give me a call: 651-778-1395. –Bob Douglas

Help Wanted: T-shirt team

The MBOTMA T-shirt team is looking for new members. They are in extreme need of volunteers to take charge of the merchandise booth at the Winter Bluegrass Weekend and the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff. Working at the T-shirt booth is a great way to meet people and support MBOTMA. If you’d like to coordinate the booth at a festival or co-run it with a teammate, please let us know. The team will gather in January to plan for the coming year. A big thanks to Ann Bloch, who has taken over managing the sales inventory from long-time volunteer Joann Larson. Ann will be in charge of the booth at the Harvest Jam. And thanks to the rest of the current committee members: MBTOMA August Festival booth coordinator Barb Schommer, volunteer recruiter Maggie Jorgenson, and Bea Flaming, who oversees it all.
