From the Editor We live in a marvelous age. Just today, I entered my cell number, so a web site, if/when I forget my password, could notify me by text how to reset it. I hit send and in less than 3 seconds, I had a text telling me the verification code. Amazing! I think it was 25 years ago when I got my first email address and not much more than 15 years since my first cell phone. It’s hard to believe. We led full, productive lives even before these technologies and now we can’t imagine our world without them. This world is moving faster, in terms of technology, than most of us could ever imagine, but, thankfully, there were (and are) those who dream about how this stuff can enhance our lives. And, then there’s the debate about whether this makes our lives richer or not. Life moves fast and there is so much to experience out there. Sometimes it seems to be overwhelming. The trick is to keep it all in perspective and manageable. That’s where your community comes in. Your church, your circle of friends, your work, your dance group, your band, your jamming friends, your jamming aquaintances, all help keep us grounded and sane. MBOTMA is one of those circles for me. The festivals, concerts, jams all help me, not forget about my busy life, but enrich it with the kind of social interaction that humans crave. So, in a week or so, we will be at El Rancho Mañana for the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff Festival, jamming, listening, talking, doing all those things that ground us. Volunteering at any event can enhance these experiences with more rewards. I hope you will join us in this Spring Grounding Ritual. I hope you are enjoying the mag lately. I am enjoying putting it together for you. This is your magazine and I invite you to contribute. Tell us about your first experience with MBOTMA or string band music of any sort. You could write about your jamming group or your experience volunteering for MBOTMA. Let’s spread the word about MBOTMA, bluegrass, oldtime, or string band music. Invite your friends and be an ambassador for the association and the music. Say, maybe we should put together yet another committee, called MBOTMA Ambassadors? (Just kidding...) IBCNU, Doug Lohman

2016 Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff

June 3-5, 2016 - El Rancho Manana Campground The Kickoff is right around the corner! It will be a fun-filled weekend of stage shows, jamming, and workshops. And, don’t forget, the Gathering Place. It will be held at El Rancho Mañana campground, Richmond, MN. Main Stage The main stage is the place to catch wonderful bluegrass, old-time, and Americana music played by our MBOTMA bands. Twenty member bands are playing this year, beginning at 6 PM on Friday. We’re excited to watch the Platte Valley Boys with the twin fiddles of Catie Jo and Tom Schaeffer, the Mark Kreitzer Band, Ivory Bridge, and the runners up from the 2015 Harvest Festival, Blue Groove. This year’s lineup also includes the Wild Goose Cloggers, who put on quite a show. This is the second year for the Great Minnesota Uke Gathering (GMUG) held in conjunction with the Homegrown Kickoff and we are happy they are coming back. This

is a Minnesota ukulele weekend celebration and a get together for all ukulele players. We’ll have a special ukulele performance by Lil’ Rev on the Main Stage on Saturday. Workshops and Jam with the Bands Take a break from listening and come do some doin’ – you’re sure to have fun and learn something new at the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff workshops and Jam-With-The-Band sessions! If you play an instrument and want to work on your skills, we have a number of great workshops planned. Check the schedule. Ranch House Live The Ranch House Live (RHL) provides a less formal venue for anyone interested in performing in front of folks. The RHL is a single mic set-up that takes place at the El Rancho Mañana Ranch House from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. There will be a sign-up genius (registration) on the MBOTMA Kickoff webpage.

Old-Time Music at the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Festival August 11-14, 2016 - El Rancho Manana Campground by Doug Lohman

MinnesotaBluegrass.org

Yes, Old-time is in the description of music that will be showcased at the 37th Annual Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Festival, August 11-14 this year. This festival has a deep heritage in old-time music. Since its inception, it has celebrated, not only bluegrass music, but also the rich traditions that bluegrass has inherited from old-time music and string band music.

The Canote Brothers will grace the stage, bringing to us a taste of old-time and early country music from the Northwest. Hailing from Seattle, Jere and Greg Canote, actual twins, will bring us the sound of the brother duets. They like to think of themselves as carrying on the tradition of the Stanleys, Everlys and the Blue Sky Boys. They will bring forgotten fiddle tunes, swing classics and quirky novelty songs. As one reviewer put it, “Their songs all have the ring of cock-eyed classics.” Fiddle, guitar, banjo, and uke are just some of the instruments they play. Their website lists 9 recordings and, since they’ve been playing more than a few years, there are probably more recordings, now out of print. (Remember cassettes and vinyl?) They were regulars on NPR’s Sandy Bradley’s Potluck for 13 years, a radio show that featured old-time and variety music. Another reviewer states, “The humor, good-natured mischief, and 12

they know how to entertain! Another old-time group we’ll have from the Northwest is the Horsenecks. With roots in Portland, OR and Liverpool, England, they describe their music as hard-hitting transcontinental old-time and early bluegrass string band music. (Put that into an acronym…) The core of the band, Gabrielle Macrae (Macrae Sisters) and Barry Southern (Liverpool’s The Canote Brothers Loose Moose String Band), each play fiddle, banjo and guitar. They are well respected in the musical skills that the Canotes share new generation of string band players. are so infectious that it is impossible One reviewer writes, “The Horsenecks not to have a great time when they somehow manage to make you want perform. They are always a treat, both to dance to the saddest song, and as entertainers and musicians.” I bet cry to the happiest. Their harmonies blend beautifully and melt you into a puddle on the floor, a puddle that’s still trying to dance.” From the Nashville area comes the Hogslop String Band. They first realized they had something special when they played together as a pick-up band for a square dance. Their repertoire relies heavily on Georgia and Middle Tennessee fiddle tunes. Their list of first place awards in oldtime/string band contests is very impressive. One reviewer says, “Hogslop is the real deal groovilicious honkin’ old-time string band. Guaranteed old-time awesomeness with these fellas around!” The Horsenecks Rounding out the oldJune 2016

time music portion of the festival will be Bob and Lynn Dixon, Poor Benny, and Pert Near Sandstone. Bob and Lynn Dixon specialize in early country music and songs from the Appalachian Mountains. Their sweet harmonies will lull you back into the early days of string band music. The 3 members of Poor Benny are steeped in the rich traditions of the Appalachians and have been performing music in the upper Midwest for many years. Pert Near Sandstone has been exporting their brand of string band music all over the country. Their energy is unmatched and they bring to the tradition many of their own compositions, speaking to events in our current time. The Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Festival will be alive with the roots of bluegrass. I hope to see you all there!

Golden Eagle Hornpipe This month I’m upping the ante a little in both note count and technique with the Golden Eagle. I learned it from Dick Rees while he was still living on Nicollet Island a few decades ago. He learned it from Cole’s 1000 Fiddle Tunes which was M.M. Coles edit of the 1883 Ryan’s Mammoth Collection, both now sadly out of print. I would not part with my tattered and now loose-leaf copy. The tune according to the Fiddler’s Companion may have been named after the American Gold Eagle coin, first minted in 1795 in a $10 denomination. It’s been recorded across fiddle traditions with great renditions turned in by such diverse players as Benny Thomasson (Texas), Paddy O’Brien (Irish, County

Offaly), Jerry Holland (Canadian), and George Morris (Missouri) among others. You’ll need to have your G arpeggios in place (or you’ll get them in place with the learning of the tune!). It goes up to a high C in the B part which may be accomplished by changing positions, sliding up to the C note, or with just a great stretch. It’s a lovely ornate tune that may be played in hornpipe syncopation or closer to reel speed as I just played it with Adam at the Eagle’s Club’s Judy Larson Party a couple of weeks ago. I am teaching tunes on mandolin in St. Paul. So if you need help, give me a call. Bob Douglas 651-778-1395

A Review

Tony Rook - Aster Café - 4/17/16 The night after the Cabin Fever Festival in Duluth, Tony Rook took the stage at the Aster Café for a CD release show. Tony just released a very fine album, A Road Back Home, reviewed in last month’s issue by Adam Granger. The Aster is a fine music room with good sound. The menu is varied and the libations numerous. It’s a little gem, as some of our local musicians know well. The High 48s have done shows there and Patty and the Buttons play Swing Brunches there on Sundays. The show was opened by Lori Jean accompanied by Dick Kimmel on mandolin and guitar. Showcasing mostly her own original songs, she gave us an energetic set for about 30 minutes. Tony was backed up by Dick

Kimmel and Co. and, as he is the Company’s guitar player, it is only natural that he would do this show with that band. Dick Kimmel played mando, banjo, and sometimes guitar, Graham Sones played five string banjo and Terry Johnson played upright bass. Tony’s songwriting is right down the center of the bluegrass alley. Thanks, Tony, it was a fun evening.

Bluegrass Saturday Morning By Phil Nusbaum

Programming on the Bluegrass Review One of the elements that makes the Bluegrass Review show special is the show’s frequent interviews. Sometimes we interview bluegrass players about their creative processes, and other times, we talk to bluegrass experts regarding select bluegrass topics. On the shows broadcast on the weeks beginning Saturday June 4 and 11, we’ll be talking with author Tim Newby about bluegrass in Baltimore. Newby is the author of Bluegrass in Baltimore: The Hard Drivin’ Sound and its Legacy. Baltimore has been home to bluegrass music for over half a century, and Newby traces the development of bluegrass in Baltimore and spins examples of Baltimore bluegrass for us. In general on the Bluegrass Review and Bluegrass Saturday Morning, we survey the history of Bluegrass music and give space to what is happening recently. We’ve been giving considerable space to recent music by Sierra Hull. Now close to 25 years old, Sierra has been recording since her mid-teens. Like some others in the bluegrass field, she expresses the successor to “bluegrass lonesome,” the bluegrass deep melancholy, though Sierra’s deep melancholy seems substantially different than those of other melancholic bluegrass artists. Her recent CD, Weighted Mind, not only presents a set of songs where Sierra stakes a claim to some major stylistic territory, the production values on the CD also allow us to clearly hear all the recorded musical lines, and even some “air.” Sierra or someone connected to the project remembered that music consists not only of the tones that are played, but the spaces between them. In other words, the CD represents the “un-wall of sound.” The result is a set of songs that seem simultaneously new and old, a refreshing entry in the recent history of bluegrass music. Regarding recordings like Sierra Hull’s Weighted Mind, I often reflect that the best thing about being a bluegrass radio announcer is having an ear to the latest trends in bluegrass music.

Let the Bluegrass Season Begin Now don’t get me wrong. We all enjoy bluegrass all year ‘round. We had fun at Jedfest last January, then there was the Winter Bluegrass Weekend. There are shows in the clubs all the time, jam sessions a-plenty and Bluegrass Saturday Morning and the Bluegrass Review every Saturday. But there is nothing like playing and listening to bluegrass outdoors and in the neighborhood of shade trees. This year’s Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff takes place at El Rancho Mañana Campground near Richmond June 3-5 this year. It promises to be the first full outdoor enactment of the culture of bluegrass in quite a while. And to many of us, the outdoor part of that equation marks the true “Bluegrass Season.” Let’s take full advantage.

Bluegrass Review and Bluegrass Saturday Morning Online Whenever You Want Both Bluegrass Saturday Morning and the Bluegrass Review are archived at the website of KBEM-FM, www.jazz88fm.com. You can also download show segments to listen to once the show is over on KBEM-FM, 12 noon on Saturday.

Help Wanted: T-shirt team

The MBOTMA T-shirt team is looking for new members. They are in extreme need of volunteers to take charge of the merchandise booth at the Winter Bluegrass Weekend and the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff. Working at the t-shirt booth is a great way to meet people and support MBOTMA. If you’d like to coordinate the booth at a festival or co-run it with a teammate, please let us know. The team will gather in January to plan for the coming year. And thanks to the current committee members: MBTOMA August Festival booth coordinator Barb Schommer, volunteer recruiter Maggie Jorgenson, and Bea Flaming who oversees it all. Email Bea at bea@minnesotabluegrass.org or call 800-6353037 if you’d like more information or would like to volunteer.
