It is often said that change doesn’t come easy, and for MBOTMA. the last couple of years can attest to that. Transitions require new ideas, thoughtful consideration, and involve a certain amount of trial and error. Recently, the contract between MBOTMA and its new Executive Director, Patricia Bungert, came to an end. We thank Patricia for her contributions to our organization these last three months. While the Board continues its work of creating and executing a sustainable long-range plan for the organization, Jed Malischke has agreed to act as our Interim Executive Director through the August Festival, and has resigned as Board Secretary. As we continue our journey, we would love to hear from our members as we formulate our plan for the future. Despite our challenges, the Winter Bluegrass Weekend was a great success. We’d like to thank the volunteers who made it run smoothly, the Committee who organized a great event, and the member bands who contributed their talents. Laura Cooper

Strange times. The weather and all. Makes me think of summer... “What we have in mind here, is breakfast in bed for 400,000.” Hugh Romney, aka Wavy Gravy. Well, we’re not exactly going back to Woodstock, but this issue of Minnesota Bluegrass is the Special Festival issue; chocked full of flyers for your summer festival planning. You can remove the whole festival section or just the center section. Hanging out at music events, festivals, is one of the best ways to celebrate our lives. We continue the tradition while at the same time expose ourselves to new sounds and tunes. You might experience a jam that prods you into a new place with your music and playing. You might listen to a jam and hear something totally new or refreshingly old. There is a whole lot of new bands, particularly at the festivel in August, that haven’t played in our area before. Check out the August Festival flyer on page 27. Google those bands you haven’t heard and listen to them to see what’s in store! There is a wealth of opportunity on the web: providing us with the ability to hear all kinds of things, new and old. Hope to see you at a festival or two. Continued page 5

Casting for the middle of the river: Charlie Parr
April 2017
it’s always a surprise and happens even when I’m listening to a song I’ve heard a million times. Sometimes, something else happens too, some part of my musical soul raises it’s ears and listens harder and suddenly lights up with nothing less than pure joy. Hold on, this Willie Dunn record I’ve been listening to has ended. I need to hear it again.
From the Editor continued from page 3
If you can, give back to MBOTMA. There are all kinds of opportunities to volunteer. Volunteers are the soul of MBOTMA. If you looking to learn new skills, working at any MBOTMA event is a great way to get a free education. When you volunteer, you will be working with professionals who have years of experience producing events, and it’s not all work (or sometimes it doesn’t seem like work), just ask anybody who is on an event committee. Hope to see you at the Cabin Fever Festival in Duluth, Mar 31 to April 2. It’s a solid line-up with the High48s, Georgia Rae Family Band, the Roe Family Singers, The Gated Community, The Fish Heads, The Double Down Daredevils, The Biscuit Boys, Heart Strings, Borderstone, Seldom Herd, North Country Gentlemen, Four Mile Portage and Def Lester. Workshops, Jams, dances, draw bands and more. Lloyd LaPlant got to play at the Opry. Filmmaker John Whitehead is doing a screening of his new movie about the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Charlie Parr has a few things to share. You can read all about in this month’s Minnesota Bluegrass Magazine. IBCNU, Doug 5

Last year I was lucky enough to get a copy of “Native North America”, a compilation of mostly roots music from various indigenous musicians from Canada, and was immediately blown away by the very first track. It was one of those moments where I have to stop, lift the needle before it has a chance to go any farther, and start again. That feeling is one that I treasure and have ever since I was seven years old and really listened and heard music for the first time. Everything stopped for me as the music grew from the speakers and surrounded me, lighting up parts of my brain that I hadn’t even realized were there. They say it’s hard to get back that “first time” feeling, that it fades or you become accustom to it, or feel like you’ve already heard everything there is to hear, but in my own life I’ve been blessed with the electric joy of discovery time and time again when it comes to music. My parents used to marvel at how many times I could listen to a record, sitting stock-still in front of the speaker, jumping up only when it was over to replace the needle at the beginning again. The feeling barely suffers description, it’s pure joy, I
feel awestruck, every cell seems to lean towards the sound. These days, creeping a little hesitantly into my 50’s, I listen to and play music every single day and find those electric pathways in my mind still lighting up on a regular basis. Even when I go back and listen to something I’ve been hearing all my life, there are times when it stops me cold and I just have to jump up and put the needle back to the beginning again. The other day I was playing guitar with a couple friends, just doing some improvisational jamming in an odd tuning, that at first blush seemed a little restrictive in its droniness, but as we wove it the tapestry came alive and all the potential pathways became a little clearer. I’ve played the guitar since I was a kid but I’ve never played this piece of music before, and I’ll never play it again, but I was thrilled at the discovery and went on to incorporate some of the sonic oddities of that piece into a new song I wrote as well as a twisty re-arranging of an old blues tune that I’d been kicking around. Whatever this is, whatever it’s called, I think it’s been the single most important factor in my playing and songwriting. I’ve been very lucky in that I feel this electricity even in my own playing and when I hit on something good the process of working it out and kneading it, so to speak, is much like the needle being moved back to the beginning over and over again. I think I’ve even seen it happen in other players, I saw pure delight on Spider John Koerner’s face one night as he moved away from a familiar figure and went exploring during “Leatherwing Bat”, and Dave Ray was prone to extended journeys away from the song at hand and his face often wore the expression of a child meeting Santa Claus for the first time when this happened. As a listener I can feel this musical excitement from all the way across a room or from over 80 years away, it’s palpable. I hope it’s something I always experience, I hope

A Banjo, Fiddle and a Hand Saw walk into a bar... by Kim Curtis-Monson
April 2017
dobro and mandolin walk onto a stage!! A favorite part of this little festival has been the Draw Band competition, aka. “Battle of the Bands”. After drawing a name from each instrument type, the “new” band will choose a name for the band and play two songs on stage for the Saturday evening audience. Winner is determined by the audience applause. So bring your groupies, family and friends to hear you play! It’s a very fun way to connect with other musicians and learn a new thing or two..new song, new break, a new sound, or a new jamming partner! Enjoy! Saturday workshops will include (and are free with a paid ticket) a Bluegrass Fiddle workshop by Eric Christopher of the High 48s, Clawhammer banjo and clogging by Kim and Quillan Roe, Georgia Rae will do Introduction to Improvising For All Instruments. A favorite this year is sure to be How to Play an Instrument Generally Used to Saw Down Trees. Sumanth Gopinath is a University of
Minnesota Professor and will do a special workshop on Music Theory in Bluegrass and Country Music. I’m telling you folks, you could get real darn good edu-macated with this line up. Some of the other guest bands invited to perform on Friday and Saturday will be : The Fish Heads, the Double Down Daredevils, The Biscuit Boys, Heart Strings, Borderstone, Seldom Herd, North Country Gentlemen, Four Mile Portage and Def Lester. Your dinner hour Saturday does not have to be “music-less”. The Incline Station and Spot Sports Bar will host two bands during the 4-7pm dinner break. Duluth’s own Fish Heads will host the stage and The Gated Community for your listening and eating pleasure. That makes 3 different, FUN places for you to be at this festival. It will be impossible for you to not have a good time. So get ready for Spring, bring your instruments and leave your long johns at home, there’s gonna be HOT PICKIN’ in every corner!!

Well, I don’t know if it’s El Nino or the current political undertow but holy molasses do we need to jammmm! The Minnesota weather has been anything but predictible with 50 degrees in February, but perhaps it’s what has brought on the extra excitment for the Duluth Cabin Fever Festival. It’s no April Fools joke, but March 31- April 2 will once again bring the warm winds of bluegrass and oldtime music to the Duluth Radisson Hotel and Conference Center. The ice should be pushing its way out of the harbor and into Lake Superior with every note that’s plucked on the banjos. This year’s lineup is sure to bring a smile to your face with headliners the High 48s bringing their stellar musicianship as well as traditional harmonies. The Georgia Rae Band will be a delight to your ears and eyes, as these three young ladies light up the stage and dazzle you with their fiddle champion as well as their sister harmonies. The Gated Community is a Minneapolis based band playing more untraditional countrified tunes, and a lot of fun. Their hometown neighbors the Roe Family Singers have graced our Duluth festival before and that’s why they are back for more toe tapping, clogging, dancing, fiddlin’ craziness. This year we have a second venue again, as dancers and fiddlers need a little extra room to do what they do best. The Avalon Educational Institute is across the street from the main event and will host the dances and lively old time music, so don’t be afraid to jump in and “get your feet wet” dancing. Friday night they’ll kick the tires and light the fires at the Avalon starting at 6:30. They will have a dance caller to tell you what to do if you haven’t danced before, so don’t worry about that. Wear loose clothing and bring clean shoes So it does really sound like the beginning of a bad joke: A banjo, fiddle and hand saw walk into a bar.. But in this case it’s a banjo, guitar, bass, fiddle,

hours of fiddle music for dancers. The dance band included musicians, Alan O’Bryant (of the Nashville Bluegrass Band), Clelia Stefanini (old-time fiddler), Eric Frey (bass, The Revelers), Tyler Andal (fiddler, The Greencards) and myself on fiddle. I then got to thinking...how cool would it be for Lloyd to play The Grand Ole Opry while he’s in town, so I called Grand Ole Opry member, Mike Snider, who I play for, and asked if it would be okay? Mike Snider (national banjo champion & HeeHaw character) charms audiences with his wit, humor and intense musicianship. He, of course was delighted that Lloyd play with us. So Lloyd played on the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium (considered the mother church of country music) on the evening of February 3rd which was aired on AM channel WSM650! The Grand Ole Opry is the longest running radio program in the world. Started in 1925 as the “The WSM Barn Dance,” it is still going strong over 90 years later. Reminiscent of the
music of the early Grand Ole Opry, the Mike Snider string band plays fast tempo fiddle tunes that gets toes tappin’! The Snider band consists of guitar, bass, banjo, fiddles, and mandolin. Lloyd was a big hit with the audience when Mike Snider introduced him, saying he would soon be turning 88 years old! That night with the Mike Snider string band we played two tunes, “The Battle Cry of Freedom,” and “Waitin’ on Nancy.” As Lloyd left the stage Mike Snider exclaimed, “I hope I’m in good a shape when I get that age!,” and Lloyd had a giant smile on his face as he walked off. You can listen live to The Grand Ole Opry on WSM650 at http://wsmonline. com/. I highly suggest listening to the Snider band featuring Lloyd LaPlant at this link https://soundcloud.com/user971423658/friday-night-opry-february-32017?in=user-971423658/sets/grand-oleopry-2017 at time point 33:30.

“A friend to all,” is a good description of Lloyd LaPlant, mandolin/guitar builder and musician extraordinaire! We have enjoyed the LaPlant’s friendship for a number of years now. Lloyd and Bev are fine folks with a warm and inviting spirit. Lloyd, his son Chuck and family friend Dominic Orico made their yearly pilgrimage to Nashville Tennessee for SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America) convention this past February. I’ve always enjoyed playing fiddle tunes with Lloyd, he’s one of the greatest rhythm guitar players I know for backing up a fiddler. Knowing he was coming down, I phoned Lloyd asking if he would play a Contra dance with me while in Nashville. I got a very typical modest Lloyd answer to my question...”If you think I can keep up...” which tickled me and at the same time made me really miss being around folks from home. The Contra Dance is held every Friday night here in Nashville and is a wonderful excuse to just sit down and literally play
Local filmmaker screens documentary feature about Carolina Chocolate Drops on April 13, 2017
John Whitehead is proud to invite the MBOTMA community to a pre-release screening of his documentary, Don’t Get Trouble in Your Mind: The Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Story.
MinnesotaBluegrass.org
When: Thursday, April 13, 7 to 9 pm Where: The Heights Theater 3951 Central Ave. NE. Columbia Heights, MN 55421 Admission is free, but bring your checkbook--donations will be gratefully accepted! About the film: Don’t Get Trouble in Your Mind: The Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Story is a documentary portrait of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, an African-American string band from Raleigh, North Carolina, and their mentor, black fiddler, Joe Thompson (1919—2012). The film captures how three African-Americans from the hip-hop generation embraced a 19th-century genre and took it to new 10
heights, winning a Grammy in 2010. The story of the band’s meteoric rise, from busking on the street to playing major festivals, is punctuated and informed by the history of the banjo’s origins in Africa, and the untold story of how blacks and whites collaborated to create the earliest forms of American popular music. About the filmmaker: Local filmmaker and musician, John Whitehead, has been a MBOTMA member since 1998. He has a long track record of producing documentaries for PBS and other outlets. His many credits include the Emmy award-winning series Minnesota: A History of the Land, and the documentaries Wannabe: Life and Death in a Small Town Gang, and Make ‘Em Dance: The Hackberry Rambler’s Story, both of which aired nationally on the PBS series, Independent Lens. Fundraising effort: John has worked sporadically on this film since 2005, juggling what has been a labor of love with his other projects.
John Whitehead Despite tons of sweat equity and generous grant support from The Minnesota State Arts Board, the Bush Foundation, and The Southern Documentary Fund, expenses have far outweighed revenue. He is now trying to raise $15,000 in finishing funds to help pay for a sound April 2017
mix, color correction, title and graphics design, music rights, and a marketing budget to enter the film in film festivals here and abroad. He is reaching out to friends and the music community to ask them to consider supporting the project.

April 2017
Bluegrass Saturday Morning By Phil Nusbaum
The Winter Bluegrass Weekend It was a Winter Bluegrass Weekend to remember. Like many participants, I took full advantage of jamming space. But at the WBW I am most focused on Spotlight On, a program hosted by me that brings together a few players and/or singers that represent a theme. So whatever else I am in the middle of at the WBW, I always divert to the Old Time Dance Parlour 5-6:45pm. This year the theme of Spotlight On was Hot Guitar. During a planning session, Ben Manning came up with the idea. It seemed like a good idea since the expression “hot guitar” has a good deal of currency today, it had not been done previously, and could be represented by a number of local players. The mission of Spotlight On is to work outward from bluegrass and old-time music into musical areas of interest. Thanks to the players who participated, the 2017 Spotlight On was memorable. Mike Cramer opened. Mike has a background in jazz, and he brought a his ability to re-imagine traditional music to his portion of the program. Then Tim Sparks played. Tim’s recorded works include Middle Eastern and Jewish styles, old jazz and finger-style guitar. For the Spotlight On show, Tim chose to play some of the finger-style pieces that were also featured on a recent CD, Chasin’ the Boogie. Finally, Dean Magraw rounded out the program. Go to Dean’s website and you’ll appreciate the wide variety of unexpected musical combinations he is part of, and when you listen to him, you appreciate the unexpected guitar techniques he treats you to. Taken together, Mike Cramer, Tim Sparks and Dean Magraw delivered a program of tremendous variety and virtuosity that no one wanted to end. Hat’s off to all three.
Programming on the Bluegrass Review In April, we will work with a few more of the interviews acquired in the Omaha, Nebraska in August 2016. We’re also looking forward to doing some work with Iowa City fiddler Al Murphy connected to the recording he is working on that will feature tunes learned from some of Al’s favorite fiddlers.

Fund Raising on KBEM
On-air fund raising is fun. But when it is over, you’re happy that it’s about another 6 months until you have to do it again. Thanks to MBOTMA board President Laura Cooper for helping with the on-air pitching. Our first week goal was 60 calls or online pledges totaling $6,000, and the actual totals were 69 and $5,691. Both are considered good numbers. April 2017

Congratulations to Kevin Barnes and the staff of the Hook and Ladder for their roles in creating the Feb 25 party commemorating the 35th anniversary of Bluegrass Saturday Morning. Having bands alternating at stages at ends of the space created a lot of movement, and the vibe was indeed more like a party than a concert. Performing bands included the High 48s, Sherry Minnick and Phil Nusbaum, Chris and Ari Silver, King Wilkie’s Dream, Adam Kiesling and AJ Srubas and Company. It was a good representation of local bluegrass and old-time music, a good time was had by all, and it got KBEM people thinking about hosting other events at the Hook and Ladder.

In his search for new markets, Michel some years ago took on the design of the lowly pick. The results have been phenomenal. Wegen Picks endanger no animal species, and they are a fraction of the price of the illegal picks that do. We have eight models for guitar and mandolin on hand in a variety of thicknesses. Try one out on your next visit.

Tab: Robert E Lee Swing By Bob Douglas
I read a little music notation, but “not enough” as Missouri fiddler Bob Holt has said, “to hurt my playing none.” In fact, I’ve found it’s very helpful especially when you are in love with tunes. There are so many great collections of tunes available from every imaginable genre. Some tunes are not easily found on recordings and locked away until you master the notation to bring them back to life. For me, this tune is a good example. I found it in R.P. Christeson’s Old-Time Fiddler’s Repertory of 245 traditional tunes (Vol 1), a treasure trove of tunes from Missouri and adjoining States. The tune is listed simply as number 98: “Breakdown” but R. P. did the favor of giving us a little background. He found several titles: Richmond Polka as recorded by Red Williams and that same title was used on a 78-rpm Brunswick recording Clark Kessinger made about 1935. The melody is included in Ira Ford’s Traditional Music of America, 1940, where it’s called Redman’s Reel. But the name that captured me was “The Robert E. Lee Swing.” A fiddler in Loudoun County, Virginia, advised Christeson of that name. It’s a lively tune played in the key of D in the first half and then switching to the key of A in the second. In the “B” part, the melody goes up to a high “B” meaning you will need to move to second position or get one of Adam Granger’s patented “finger-extenders” (he may have a few left). And it just so happens that Robert E. Lee Swing is included in my recently released CD, Just Tunes. Adam gives some fine back-up on the tune as well as on four other medleys. The CD also includes five old-time medleys from the Tune Jerks (Adam Kiesling, Tom Schaefer, and myself) and strong sets of Irish reels, jigs, and hornpipes I got to play with Captain Kaliber (Amy Shaw, John McCormick, Mary Vanorny, and Patsy O’Brien). So even if you don’t read music but like the title and want to learn the Robert E. Lee (or a number of other good tunes that you likely haven’t encountered), hop on down to see Marv at the Homestead and pick up a copy. Keep celebrating the music!
