Darrell Webb Band at the top of their game By Martha Galep

It could be said that IBMA is THE festival of all festivals and bands that get to play there must certainly feel that their talent is being recognized by the entire bluegrass world. Likewise, to be nominated for an annual award from the International Bluegrass Music Association is considered one of the highest honors in bluegrass. The Darrell Webb Band has achieved both these recognitions with their 2013 IBMA nominations for Emerging Artist and Instrumental Recording, in addition to their showcases at the festival that same year. The Harvest Jam committee is pleased to host this exceptional group as the headline performers for the Saturday night concert following the dinner banquet as well as the final act for the Sunday Gospel Show. I was fortunate to be in the audience last year at the band’s opening showcase at IBMA. Having never seen the Darrell Webb Band live, I really had no idea what to expect. I was familiar with Darrell’s high, clear tenor from his work with Wildfire, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, and Sideline but I was not prepared for the energy, talent, and enthusiasm that was to come that night. They took my breath away!

Friday Night Ballroom Concert There is plenty going on during the day on Friday, with theme-jam fun, hotel lobby jams, and the opening of the vendor room. But the official beginning to our entire weekend of acoustic music experiences is the Friday night ballroom concert main stage show, from 7 to 11 p.m. Three fine groups will take the stage: The Sawtooth Brothers, Ivory Bridge, and Hey Lonesome. The sound of the Sawtooth Brothers is rooted in traditional bluegrass instrumental and harmony work and is influenced by the modern acoustic sounds of Nickel Creek, the 6

Punch Brothers, and the Steep Canyon Rangers. During a live performance, audiences can expect creative original songs, hard-driving bluegrass, classic country, gospel, and classic rock. this wonderful haunting violin-type instrument is played or built, don’t miss Earl’s presentation. At 11:30 a.m., Paul Schulte will host a Songwriter’s Round Table. Paul’s songwriting workshop at the 2014 MBOTMA Festival was such a success we’re bringing him back for Harvest Jam. The workshop will be conducted in a round robin format to encourage songwriting and provide a networking opportunity to meet other songwriters. Songwriters young and old are welcome to try out a new song of theirs with their songwriting peers. Let’s make it fun and “spin the circle” fast so everyone can share their music. Come share songs or just come to listen. Bluegrass in the Digital Age: How to Use Social Media to Build Your Fan Base will be a hot topic with host Ellen Stanley at 1 p.m. Ellen, aka “Mother Banjo,” is a touring musician, radio host, and active music promoter. She currently serves as the executive director of the Minnesota Music Coalition, the only statewide nonprofit devoted solely to supporting Minnesota musicians. Before heading up the MMC, she was the director of publicity and promotions

at Grammy-winning indie label Red House Records, where she developed an international reputation as one of the top music publicists in the country and was voted one of the “Best in the Industry” by Americana DJ’s, five years running. An expert in band promotions, Ellen will go over the basics on how to utilize Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms to publicize your shows, share your music, and connect with fans. Smart phones, tablets, and laptops welcomed and encouraged. It’s a treat to have Cory Walker present the Banjo 2014 workshop this year at 3 p.m. For those who may not be familiar with Cory and his work, he recently won a prestigious Momentum Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA). Cory starred on a CBS television special with Keith Urban in 2004 and on ABC in 2005 with Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs, and Kix Brooks. Cory has performed on the Grand Ole Opry several times and has played alongside Dan Tyminski, Tony Rice, Clay Hess, Barry Bales, Stuart Duncan, Jim VanCleve, Jerry Douglas, Rob Ickes, Ron Block, and Alison Krauss. Harvest Jam workshops are moving to a more spacious location this year with another great line-up of interesting topics for bands and musicians. Saturday starts off with Intro to Nyckelharpa with Earl Holzman at 10:30 a.m. Earl is a Nyckleharpa builder from Eau Claire who is a first time vendor at our Harvest Jam. He will give a history of the Nyckleharpa, its styles, types, tunings, building, and more. If you are curious about how

one of the best young bluegrass pickers in the world and he is as proficient on guitar and Dobro as he is on banjo. He recently toured with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder and currently plays with Sierra Hull and Highway 111. Cory is sponsored by My Favorite Guitars for this workshop. Our headlining group, The Darrell Webb Band, will host our final workshop of the day at 4 p.m. Darrell and his band will lead a discussion on how to arrange songs, and how to decide who plays or sings what, where, and why. Arranging harmonies, instrumentation, and lyrics will all be topics, as well as how to arrange set lists to get the audience in the palm of your hand. This will be a real “How To Do It” from a great band. Bring your questions and get them answered by the pros at the Arranging Our Songs workshop.

Banquet Dinner & Saturday Concert This entire weekend of fun builds up to a highlight evening on Saturday, starting with a friendly social hour at 5 p.m., then a sumptuous banquet dinner at 6 p.m., followed by the headline concert with The Darrell Webb Band, The Fish Heads, and the new Race For A Place champions. You don’t need to attend the dinner to enjoy the concert, but you’ll want to so you can get the best seats in the house for the after-dinner show. You also don’t need to attend the dinner to join us at the pre-dinner social hour. There will be some music, cash bar, and you can check out all the entries in the photo contest. After dinner there will be a short program to recognize a few folks that have been important to MBOTMA over the past year, including our outgoing board members, our annual 8

volunteer champions, and our Harvest Jam committee members. Then it’s right into the evening concert starting with a short set from the new Race For A Place champions (of course, we don’t know who that will be yet), followed by sets from The Darrell Webb Band (see p. 5) and The Fish Heads. The Fish Heads (www.bigfishtunes.com) are an impressive alternative bluegrass band steeped in ’70s and ’80s rock as well as traditional and original material. Most have been together playing music for more than 20 years, and have opened for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Charlie Daniels, and Leon Redbone. Mike and Kim Monson take lead vocals as well as harmonies so pure and sweet they’ll make your toes curl. They are versatile musicians switching off on stand-up bass and guitar, both also play some mandolin and from time to time they are drummers. Brian Ford is a gifted banjo player who has published banjo tablatures for a book by “Dr. Banjo” Peter Wernick of Hot Rize, and on Pete’s website (www. drbanjo.com). He has won the Iowa State Competition with his dicey licks. Bruce Bernhardt is the newest member and rounds out the band nicely with his backup chops and Monroe-inspired mandolin instrumentals. Together these musicians are a rockin’ mix of covers from every genre and originals

that range from soulful ballads from Kim’s pen to Brian’s intense and polished instrumentals. They are the real deal, and this will surely lead to some late night fun on stage.

Tickets & Reservations Don’t forget there will also be a Sunday morning gospel show, Kip’s Live both Friday and Saturday, theme jams, music vendors, the hayloft jam rooms, and plenty of space for jam sessions around the clock. You won’t want to go home, so now is the time to reserve your room. Call the Marriott at 952-544-4400 and ask for the Minnesota Bluegrass $89 standard room rate ($109 for suites). You can find detailed schedules of all the events and also order your tickets at www.MinnesotaBluegrass.org (or call 800-635-3037). A weekend ticket that includes everything except the banquet dinner can be purchased in advance for $35 ($30 for MBOTMA members). You can upgrade that to a “VIP ticket” that includes the dinner for an additional $20 (dinner tickets are limited and advance purchase is required). Daily admission prices at the door will be $20 on Friday and $25 on Saturday. Teens are half price and kids are free. Order them now and then we’ll see you at the 2014 Harvest Jam Acoustic Music Experience.

Fun Raising

And One More Thing

It isn’t “fund raising,” it’s “fun raising.” Well, we do try to have fun with it. While we were on the air together during the first week of KBEM’s fall fund drive, a listener emailed me to compliment new program manager Travis Ryder on the way he comported himself during Bluegrass Saturday Morning. Later, Kevin Barnes sat in during the Bluegrass Review show, reminiscing a bit about Hot Rize, who is playing a show at the Cedar Cultural Center on November 19. This Coloradobased band group has always been popular in our town, and Kevin was talking about a fundraiser-connected drawing for free tickets to the show. He reminded me that pledging on air might be less than in past years because KBEM does a better job than it used to encouraging renewals. Regular listener-members renew their memberships before a fund drive, so the goal of on-air fund raising is more to bring in new members. Kevin was saying, in effect, that reduced totals during on-air fundraisers do not necessarily mean reduced support. As far as the purpose of week 1 of the fall 2014 fund drive, let’s just say that we did well when you consider it was held on September 27—a day when the temperature was slated to get close to 80. As a group, Minnesotans do not want to be caught staying indoors on a day that might turn out to be the last nice day of fall. As a result, pledging was a little slow. As this is written, I believe we’ve (unofficially) raised something like $6,000 so far during Bluegrass Saturday Morning and the Bluegrass Review. Pledges of support given to public radio stations are heartfelt contributions, and we appreciate every single one, regardless of the amounts contributed. One of my favorite fundraising announcing strategies is to say that we don’t expect any entity to drop, say, $500,000 on our heads. Actually, we don’t expect a drop of $100,000, a thousand, or even one cent from some anonymous donor. We expect, as I say on the air, that it’s going be a little from here, and a little from there that will add up to a nice total. However, you cannot deny that it is nice to see some larger pledges roll in, and during our last hour on September 27, the station received a couple of $500 pledges. Fair weather or foul, we plan to be back at it next week.

I’m looking forward to the Harvest Jam, November 21–23, at the Marriott Minneapolis West. This year the headliner is the Darrell Webb Band. Darrell played a MBOTMA event about 10 years ago. At the time he was working in a band with Phil Leadbetter. Darrell is a great picker and singer, and a friendly guy you’d like to meet. His current group plays arrangements that contain many little surprises. I’m looking forward to their show.

Letter from the President

Dear Friend of MBOTMA, I am writing to you as the president of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Association (MBOTMA). We will soon be celebrating our 40th anniversary. Over the years this organization has provided the wonderful gift of music and friendships to so many of us. But right now I feel the need to ask for your help. MBOTMA has just completed a rough financial year, perhaps our worst ever. We did everything we planned to do and stayed within our budget, yet bad weather and fate have played us a bad hand. We lost a major fundraising venue in Minneapolis, plus weather kept attendance—and hence revenues—down for several of our most important events. The bottom line is that MBOTMA will have a nearly $30,000 deficit this year. This will drain our reserves and make it difficult to produce the events and programs we all enjoy so much. If you feel, as I do, that MBOTMA has provided many positive experiences for you and your family and friends, please consider doing one or more of the following before the end of the year: • Renew your membership, even if you have recently done so. We will have to raise our membership rates in 2015, but you can renew now at current rates and help MBOTMA by providing important cash flow. And remember that, for tax purposes, all but $15 (for Minnesota Bluegrass magazine) of your membership fee is a tax deductible donation. There is a handy pull-out form on the next page. You can also renew on our website: www.MinnesotaBluegrass.org/ as_Membership. • Please consider renewing at a higher level. We’d love to have you be a Sustaining or Patron member. • Make an end-of‐year donation. You can include it on the extra donation line on the membership form, and it is fully tax deductible. Even small amounts can make a big difference. • Find out if your employer will match your donation. Many companies have programs to match employees’ contributions; some will even match money for your volunteer time. • Make an online donation on Give-to-the-Max Day November 13 (or any time after). We’ll be tweeting, posting, and sending email reminders with links to our GiveMN website at www.givemn.org/organization/ Minnesota-Bluegrass-And-Old-Time-Music-Association. • Check out our Member-Get-A Member Challenge program and encourage others you know to become MBOTMA members. Point out that our festivals and concerts, our programs for kids, the workshops and jamming opportunities, the performance schedules, and ads in the magazine, all bring people together who love and enjoy our music. There is a category to meet every financial level, and members can be proud to be part of the thriving Minnesota acoustic music community. • Purchase a ticket. Ticket information on our next two festivals is included on the pull-out order form. Our board of directors will be taking additional steps in the near future to put MBOTMA back on a forward path. Together with your help we can turn things around. Thank you for your consideration.

P.S. Watch for the new fundraising event we are planning to hold in Minneapolis early next year. It’s going to be a big time you won’t want to miss and another great opportunity to help out! November 2014

The Member-Get-a-Member Challenge By Marilyn Bergum, MBOTMA Board Membership Chair

Are you ready to accept a challenge that will let you have some fun and also earn you glory, honor, and some great rewards in the process? MBOTMA is launching a Member-Get-a-Member Challenge to allow you to help us build our membership base. Here’s how it works. Just cut and copy the attached Member-Get-A-Member Challenge form on the next page, then sign up new members. Complete the bottom of the form as the Recruiting Member so we can award you points. Send the form to MBOTMA by mail (with their check) or phone it in as a pledge. It’s that easy. How do we do this? Well, how about getting together with your jamming group to see how many members you can recruit? Or perhaps a festival committee teaming up to do the same. So let’s get cracking and boost our membership while promoting our music. Remember, the membership rates will be going up March 1, 2015, so your friends have an incentive to join now. Recruiting points will be assessed as follows: 1 point for an Individual or Family membership, 3 points for a Sustaining membership, and 5 points for a Patron membership. The Membership Challenge begins November 1, 2014, and ends February 28, 2015. Recruitment point totals will be tallied and posted at the Winter Bluegrass Weekend, and the winning recruiter will receive two tickets to the Saturday Night Headline Loretta Simonet, of Curtis & Loretta, is an MBOTMA Concert and be recognized with an on-stage introduction and thank you. band member and volunteer as well as an ambassador If you need more application forms, you can request a printable PDF for MBOTMA and acoustic music around the country. Donate to MBOTMA on Give to the Max Day, November 13! What if you could help MBOTMA receive $1,000 just by giving $10? On November 13, 2014, you’ll have that chance. Make an online donation to MBOTMA on GiveMN.org, and your donation will be entered into an hourly drawing for a $1,000 GiveMN Golden Ticket (hmmm . . . $10 x 24 hours = $240 + $1,000 = almost our goal!)

MinnesotaBluegrass.org

PLUS one donation made on GiveMN.org during Give to the Max Day will be randomly selected at the end of the day to receive a $10,000 Super-Sized Golden Ticket. Help us increase our odds and make the most of your gift by making a donation (or 2, or 3) on November 13 on GiveMN.org. Or link to the GiveMN site from the MBOTMA homepage: minnesotabluegrass.org. Together, we hope to raise more than $2,000 on Give to the Max Day. Please help us exceed our goal.

PRESIDENT: ☐ Peter Albrecht

Candidates for MBOTMA Board of Directors Alan Jesperson — At Large

Phil Nusbaum — At Large

After serving three years as Treasurer on the MBOTMA Board, I have been encouraged by some board members to run for President, as the current President, Gary Cobus, is now stepping down from that position. Let me tell you briefly who I am and why I am asking for your vote. I have been playing acoustic music since I was 14 (that would be 55 years). Like many of us, I started out on guitar and eventually moseyed on over into banjo and mandolin. Having spread my limited talents so thin, I remain average on all instruments. I love our music and all of our events, especially the campfire camaraderie of the festivals and sleeping in a wet tent. I have participated in the MBOTMA duets competition at the State Fair, and have been actively involved in the MBOTMA fundraiser at Dulono’s. I am now retired, after serving for 32 years as a Hennepin County District Court Judge, and have ample time to dedicate to serving on the Board. I have greatly enjoyed the friends I have made through my involvement with MBOTMA. Fortunately, expert musicianship is not a prerequisite to serving as President. What I believe I would bring to the position, from both the person I am and my years on the bench, is an ability to impartially chair our meetings and give all members of MBOTMA the opportunity to be heard. I ask for your vote as President of our organization.

I would like to continue my position as Board Member at Large as I have been for the last decade or so. I have been in the bluegrass and acoustic world as a performer and booking agent for over 40 years and have had broad experience, which relates to my perspective as a part of the planning and business of the Board. I have been a member of the Middle Spunk Creek Boys since its inception in the late ’60s. I did the booking for Dulonos Pizza for over 40 years. I conceived and have continued to head the Laughing Waters Bluegrass Festival for 16 years. My approach to the acoustic world is firm yet open-minded. I welcome change, which is necessary to the health of our organization. I believe our team of knowledgeable devotees will keep this thing of ours going strong. Thank you for your time.

Over the past 40 years, I have experienced bluegrass music as a fan, player, broadcaster, and scholar. These varied experiences have given me the balanced perspective necessary to keep MBOTMA pointed in the right direction. During my board tenure, I have helped MBOTMA raise money and served as an event MC. I help plan the Winter Bluegrass Weekend; in particular, the “Spotlight On” segment. Bluegrass is popular everywhere. We must be true to our mission of serving bluegrass and old-time music while accommodating the recent changes in our music. Thanks to the many committed volunteers, MBOTMA has an admirable record of providing concerts and festivals and professional experiences for bands, statewide. The greatest challenge now is to maintain the level of activity but raise revenues. In the past, MBOTMA has benefitted from grant funding for certain projects. It seems like the right time to use my fund raising skills to help MBOTMA through the current fiscal situation. I have enjoyed serving bluegrass as a MBOTMA board member, and I would like to think that the association has benefited, too. I am looking forward to continued service.

Jana Metge — Vice President Jana has been the Vice President of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association sincw 2007. She has worked as volunteer staff for the August state-wide, 6-day festival for the past 25 years and was one of five team members to develop MBOTMA’s first strategic plan. She is the executive coordinator for Citizens for a Loring Park Community.

David Smith — At Large I have put my name in as a candidate because after being a member of MBOTMA since the beginning, I now have the time available to commit to a role as an active board member. I cont. next page

played in my first bluegrass band years before MBOTMA was founded, and have continued as a performer and/or sound technician ever since. Activities have included participation in various MBOTMA programs. I believe that the organization is in a transitional stage. Our membership is aging, national acts struggle to make a living, and the music business in general has its problems. As a board member, I would tend to focus on maintaining and building the fan base, and thereby, increasing the attendance at concerts and events. Areas of interest would include promotion, marketing, logistics, and the criteria used for the selection of bands. I would also look to find ways to better utilize and promote the various avenues for discovering, learning, and listening to bluegrass and old time music. I am particularly concerned with finding creative ways to draw in younger fans and performers; while continuing to make the festivals, concerts, and music available and accessible to seniors.

Grass Clippings Ellen Stanley, aka Mother Banjo, announced: “So Ben Cook-Feltz and I finally went through with it and got hitched! And after taking more than a month off from playing, we’re ready to get back into it, starting with a few duo shows to kick off our “Just Married” tour.” See them locally through November: Oak Center General Store, Lake City, November 1; w/Ben Cook-Feltz Band & The Counterfactuals!, Amsterdam Bar & Hall, November 4; with Vicky Emerson, Aster Cafe, Minneapolis, November 21. See details on the Coming Up Calendar. Congratulations Ellen and Ben! Red House Records is proud to announce a very special, one-night-only co-bill event featuring Minneapolis indie-folk group The Pines and American Indian activist and poet John Trudell on Saturday, November 29. For the first time ever, The Pines’ moody, evocative gothic folk and Trudell’s electrifying, powerful poems, songs and stories will share the stage for what will be Trudell’s first musical appearance in the Twin Cities in nearly a decade. The Pines are currently at work on the follow-up album to their acclaimed release Dark So Gold; this will be their only Minneapolis show for the rest of 2014. John Trudell (Santee Sioux) is an acclaimed poet, author, recording artist, actor, and activist who was the spokesperson for the Indians of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969, and former chairman of the American Indian Movement based in Minneapolis in the 1970s. Trudell began recording his poetry to traditional Native music and in 1983 he released his debut album Tribal Voice on his own Peace Company label. There are numerous fresh faces and sounds bursting onto the Minnesota bluegrass and old-time scene. Among the new groups you will want to put on your “must see” list is The May North. The current configuration of this four-piece band includes Stephanie McCorkell (fiddle), George McCorkell (guitar), Chris O’Brien (resonator guitar), and Jeff Swanner (bass). Vocals are shared among the group, as is songwriting. I recently sat down with them at one of their rehearsals to learn more about their origins, their aspirations, and what makes them tick. Husband and wife George and Stephanie make up the core of The May North, having been with the group since its inception in 2010. Stephanie learned violin through traditional classical training, but was exposed to bluegrass and oldtime music through her parents (well-known MBOTMA friends and jammers Steve and Chris Anderson). She attended numerous MBOTMA festivals when she was young. George began his musical development in traditional rock and blues, and then discovered the group Old and In the Way with Jerry Garcia, Peter Rowan, et al. Meeting Stephanie and her family immersed him more deeply in bluegrass and old-time music. Similarly, Chris grew up playing blues and classic rock on slide guitar, naming the Allman Brothers Band as influential. Jeff started playing piano and Suzuki violin. A relative tried to turn him on to old-time fiddle, but in his characteristic good-humored nature, he admitted, “I didn’t want anything to do with it!” Once he discovered the bass, however, his interest in bluegrass developed

old slapped bass. All in all, the group had a tight and polished sound that makes the listener want to get up and dance. The band gets its greatest satisfaction out of live performances in front of an engaged audience. They are just as happy to play to an audience of 25 people who are listening closely as they are to an audience of 500 festivalgoers. Each member likes to engage and make a connection with the audience. For all of them, it’s about digging into their instruments and playing with passion. George emphasized that he finds the best connection to the audience comes when the band plays true to itself with honesty. You possibly have seen or heard The May North at a local festival or event. Highlight performances of 2014 include the Cedar Cultural Center, Nevis Muskie Days Music Festival, Storyhill Fest in Deerwood, and the Boats and Bluegrass Festival in Winona, plus appearances at bars and eateries around Minnesota and Wisconsin. Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 8, for their CD Release Party to be held at the recently renovated Turf Club in St Paul. Joining them will be Horseshoes & Hand Grenades and Tin Can Gin. Also expect to see and hear local banjo wizard Mike Hedding who will sit in with the group as guest artist. You can buy tickets in advance on the First Avenue/Turf Club website: first-avenue. com/performer/may-north Be sure to visit The May North www.themaynorth.com, or better yet, see them live at a venue near you!

The North Shore Music Association (NSMA) will hold its 24th Annual “Masters Weekend,” October 31 to November 2, at Lutsen Resort in Lutsen, MN. Featuring Emory Lester and the Emory Lester Set. Lester will lead mandolin workshops on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prices are $7 per hour and $30 for the day. Michel Wegen is a recognized Dutch model maker using sculpting and airbrush art techniques to meet the needs of clients such as theme parks, ad agencies and museums. In his search for new markets, Michel some years ago took on the design of the lowly pick. The results have been phenomenal. Wegen Picks endanger no animal species, and they are a fraction of the price of the illegal picks that do. We have eight models for guitar and mandolin on hand in a variety of thicknesses. Try one out on your next visit. November 2014

Songwriting Workshop Series

Otter Creek Duo

With 10 instruments between them, Peter and Mary Danzig (Otter Creek Duo) have won multiple awards for their adept songwriting, virtuosic instrumentals and visionary arrangements of traditional and original tunes. They have drawn praise from around the country, leading one critic to describe them as “both a technical marvel and tastefully perfect.” Often compared to Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, Otter Creek’s classical training, combined with Peter’s deep roots in the folk tradition, enable them to cross boundaries among genres. They have performed in Carol Barnett’s Bluegrass Mass, and in programs that blend classical and folk traditions. They have worked with well-known singer songwriters Peter Mayer, Kate MacLeod and Alicia McGovern, and have opened for acts such as Claire Lynch and Mitch Barrett.
