ways to learn. With today’s online technology anyone can take lessons from teachers located anywhere. But some of us still like to be in the same room with the instructor. Certainly that is one of the attractions of the Masters Weekend: there are workshops all day, 9 to 5, on Saturday. And Mike is just the instructor to have in the room. He loves to teach, uses all the new media, and still likes one-on-one instruction. From beginner to advanced, he covers it all and loves helping people make their own music on their own instruments. Workshop subjects will include the basics of good form and using both the left and right hands, understanding the fretboard, understanding music composition, finding melody, and making a simple melody sound good through phrasing and dynamics. Mike has some successful techniques to help students find a song’s melody and to improvise. We offer lots of information at a good price ($30 for an all-day or $7 per session). And you can continue studying with Mike online, if you like, at mikewitcher.com. He has written two reference books: Resonator Guitar— Tunes, Techniques and Practice Skills, a highly recommended instructional source, and Resonator Guitar—20 Bluegrass Jam Favorites. Joining Mike for the concert on Saturday night will be a dynamite band, with Jordan Tice, guitar; Dominick Leslie, mandolin; and Sam Grisman, bass. Jordan Tice is an acclaimed guitarist and prolific composer of acoustic music, living in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a bluegrass household and played in bluegrass bands around Maryland. He released his first record of original music, No Place Better, at the

age of 17. He followed that with three more albums: Corbett, Chrisman, and Tice; Long Story; and The Secret History. He has played with some of the biggest names in American acoustic music (Schatz, Wakefield, Trischka, Anger, Driessen, Pikelny) with highly acclaimed results. Dominick Leslie is from Colorado. He started listening to live music as a baby and for years jammed with his father’s bluegrass band. Though a multi-instrumentalist, his focus is on the mandolin. He recorded his first solo CD at age 15 and is the youngest contestant ever to win the Rockygrass mandolin contest. Dominick is another exceptional musician who went through the Berklee College of Music. He lives in Boston and is a member of Boston’s The Deadly Gentlemen and the Grant Gordy Quartet. He also appears with Noam Pikelny and Friends.

The North Shore Music Association has presented the Masters Weekend for 25 years, with help from sponsor Lutsen Resort in Lutsen, Minnesota. We thank our loyal attendees who have demonstrated amazing dedication and enthusiasm over the years. This year, workshops will be held November 6–8, 2015 with a focus on resophonic guitar. This will be our fourth resophonic weekend, and our master musician is Michael Witcher. Known for his sweet tone, elegant portrayal of melody, and clean execution, he is considered one of the best Dobro players on the scene today. Mike is a native Californian who has recently returned to live in his home state after several years in Nashville. We’ve had several outstanding musicians from the west coast on the Lutsen stage—folks like Dan Crary, Sally VanMeter, Bob Brozman, and Dennis Caplinger. Mike is one of these talented west-coast musicians, and we feel fortunate he agreed to make the trip to Northeast Minnesota, given that he could be appearing in all kinds of warm places. Michael has appeared on stages around the world and worked with many big names, including Dwight Yoakam, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, Peter Rowan, Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek), Laurie Lewis, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Joan Osborn, The Gibson Brothers, Willie Watson (Old Crow Medicine Show), and Fernando Ortega. He has played the Grand Ole Opry many times, and you can hear him on hundreds of records, soundtracks, commercials, and TV shows. He stays very busy as a session player in L.A. and Nashville and teaches at the top acoustic music camps around the world, including Rob Ickes’ Reso Summit. There are so many ways for aspiring musicians to learn an instrument these days. Videos and websites offer amazing

Sam Grisman was eight when he made is first recording with John Hartford, Mike Seeger, and his father, David Grisman. He is currently a member of David Grisman’s Bluegrass Experience and Folk Jazz Trio. He lives in Nashville and appears with Jesse McReynolds, Ricky Skaggs, Lee Ann Womack, and in the Brotet with Alex Hargreaves, Nathaniel Smith, and Dominick Leslie. Mike Witcher and his band will perform on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at the NSMA table in the resort lobby and at the door: $20 for adults and $10 for age 12 and under. Jamming starts during the week, whenever enough folks gather at the resort. Jamming spaces are available throughout Lutsen Resort. The event officially begins on Friday. Mike and members of his band will be among the pickers in the hallways. Call Lutsen Resort at 888-752-2399 or book online at www.lutsenresort.com. Take advantage of the 3-for-2 special. Cajun Music Scholarship Fund enriches Midwest music scene The John Hugelen Cajun Music Scholarship Fund Committee is gearing up for its 7th annual gala fundraiser on Saturday, September 26, 2015. The fund provides scholarships for musicians to study Cajun music at camps offering intensive learning experiences, such as Augusta Cajun & Creole Heritage Week in Virginia, Folklore Village Cajun Weekend in Wisconsin, and Dewey Balfa Cajun & Creole Heritage Week in Lafayette, Louisiana. The fund was founded to honor John Hugelen, a multi-talented musician with a deep love of Cajun music. Hailing from Forest City, Iowa, he played Cajun accordion and fiddle and sang, providing a special presence and inspiration to everyone whose life intersected with his. He passed away on December 31, 2009 from cancer. This year, the gala presents guest musician Brandon Moreau, a superb fiddler, singer and bandleader from Louisiana, accompanied by the best Cajun musicians in the area, the Midwest Cajun Playboys. These musicians will get anyone dancing with their infectious beats and soulful singing. We welcome newcomers to Cajun music as well as diehard Cajun dance fans.

Caponi Art Park sets the stage for bluegrass By Nancy Dahl

Caponi Art Park and Learning Center, located in Eagan, Minnesota, is bringing bluegrass music to the suburbs, hosting its second annual Bluegrass Festival on Sunday, September 13. This community celebration and fundraiser for the Art Park features award-winning, nationally and regionally touring bands Monroe Crossing, Jack Norton and the Mullet River Boys, Wild Goose Chase Cloggers and Sawtooth Brothers. Kid-focused activities, food trucks, reasonable ticket prices and free admission for kids under 5 years old, makes this festival family-friendly. Gates open at noon with music starting at 2 p.m. Folks will want to arrive early to wander the park’s trails and visit the Art Park’s Sculpture Garden where they can enjoy dozens of sculptures by retired artistin-residence, Anthony Caponi. Home to one of the largest outdoor amphitheaters in the region, Caponi’s Theater in the Woods is nestled in the park’s hilly landscape and made intimate by a canopy of trees. The natural, wooded landscape offers festival goers a beautiful outdoor venue that compliments and enhances the enjoyment of bluegrass music. “Bring your lawn chair, but feel free to move around. The concert area is a natural amphitheater, the groups are great and the sound system is first rate. And the park, with its wooded areas and sculpture garden gives you additional reasons to stay all day,” remarks returning festival emcee and host of Bluegrass Saturday Morning on KBEM FM, Phil Nusbaum.

September 2015

Headlining the day and making their third appearance at Caponi Art Park is Minnesota’s Music Hall of Fame inductees Monroe Crossing. This audience favorite performed in 2014 at New York’s Carnegie Hall and recently released their 14th disc titled Because You Asked. The Mullet River Boys, led by EMMY Award winning songwriter Jack Norton, have been called, “one of the most entertaining acoustic groups in the Midwest” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Norton, better known as a filmmaker and director, will premiere his film Jug Band Hokum in late 2015. You’ll have Jack on ukulele (Tiny Tim was his babysitter) backed by the Mullet River Boys performing on homemade instruments like washboards, kazoos, combs, tuned bicycle horns, slide whistles, harmonicas, washtub bass and more. The Sawtooth Brothers released their debut original album this summer which was funded via a successful Kickstarter campaign. Dazzling audiences with precision picking and sharp harmonies the Sawtooth Brothers deliver creative original songs, hard driving bluegrass, classic country, gospel, and classic rock.

Since 1979, the Wild Goose Chase Cloggers have been mesmerizing audiences with their fancy footwork and old-time music by Rooster Riot. Their enthusiasm for Appalachian dance and music is a surefire crowd-pleaser with dances based on square dance formations, modern a cappella pieces, and other types of percussive dance including French Canadian step dancing and English waltz clogging. Audience participation is all part of the fun, and the Goose Chasers will teach dance moves to anyone who wants to join in. Tickets are on sale now at Brown Paper Tickets and at CaponiArtPark.org, and are $20 for general admission adults. Tickets for children age 6 to 12 are $5, and kids five and under are free. Group ticket discounts are also available. Financial support from the community and sponsors helps Caponi Art Park continue to operate as an independent nonprofit, present quality programming, and maintain the beauty of the park’s natural landscape.

Bluegrass Saturday Morning By Phil Nusbaum

September: The festivals keep on coming

Bluegrass Review supporters

The August festival presented by the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association is a grand experience. It’s an old-style bluegrass festival with great groups, multiple stages, jamming; in short a celebration of bluegrass culture. But multiple entities figured out that the interest in bluegrass does not end in August. On Labor Day, September 7, Alan Jesperson heads up the Laughing Waters Bluegrass Festival, a one-day event held at Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis. I know the Laughing Waters festival has become a signature Twin Cities event because all year long people come up to me to talk about it. Alan and his gang celebrate their 17th year hosting this event this year. Then the following weekend (September 12, this year), Lake Elmo holds a one-day event that, like the Minnehaha Falls festival, seems to grow every year. The Caponi Art Park got in the act and hosts its second annual Bluegrass Festival on September 13. It’s in a beautiful natural amphitheater and features a great lineup of acts. Plus there are a lot of other things to do while at Caponi, which is located in Eagan. See page 7 for more information. Information about the acts at each of these events is available online and in the Coming Up calendar. All of these events showcase bluegrass well, and in the Twin Cities, there is plenty worthwhile to showcase. These three September events are a win-win-win situation for the venues and bands involved as well as their audiences.

The Bluegrass Review Fall Season The fall brings our new season on the Bluegrass Review. The show will talk about bluegrass and work on Labor Day. Starting the week after Labor Day, we’ll be running interviews recorded in Ohio last April. Among the players I talked to are banjo composer Tony Ellis, Rick Good and Suzanne Thomas. We also interviewed scholars such as Fred Bartenstein and Mac McDivit. On every show, we’ll play important bluegrass new and old, and tie it all together with commentary that I hope listeners find interesting.

In his search for new markets, Michel some years ago took on the design of the lowly pick. The results have been phenomenal. Wegen Picks endanger no animal species, and they are a fraction of the price of the illegal picks that do. We have eight models for guitar and mandolin on hand in a variety of thicknesses. Try one out on your next visit.
