From the President- Andy Steinhagen Greetings! As most have heard we will be hosting the National Holstein Convention in 2022. We had solicited bids from several different hotels and convention centers and our executive committee has selected the bid from the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. We will be seeking volunteers for many different committees, so if you Andy Steinhagen have interest or special skills please call our office MHA Board President about where you would like to make a difference.    It’s been a full and busy summer since our last issue, and I’d like to recap some of those events. We the MHA board would like to thank the Carver-Wright-Hennepin club for hosting a great state show. It was a nice facility and well-run event. We appreciate the efforts of the host club. We have two new employees who learned a lot about their new jobs and took this opportunity to meet many of our members. Congratulations to all those that participated and kudos to the winners.   We also had staff at most of the district shows and would appreciate feedback on how we can effectively cover these without significant costs of mileage and hotels. Our Midwest Fall National show was a tremendous show with great participation numbers. Again congratulations to the winners.   I would like to personally thank our field day hosts, Justin and Marea Malone and family for a wonderful chance to see another way that a family is carving out a living in the dairy business. Their unique operation was an amazing place to see. They are a grazing,

organic dairy with a hardworking passionate family. I really enjoyed the chance to meet them and appreciate them opening their farm to us. This is another event that wouldn’t be possible without help from others. I would like to thank Karen Gorentz, Dale Rupprecht and Steve Petersen for their help putting this together.   Our staff and sale chairs are currently starting to pull pedigrees for our fall sale which will again be held in Hutchinson on November 17th . This sale will be challenging with the current economic climate, but I urge you to study the catalog and decide for yourself if you could benefit from culling on your bottom end to add some exciting new genetics. The sale is a huge undertaking for us and we are still proud to offer this as a sale for our members who need to market or purchase genetics. Along with fall sale, is one of the most exciting things we have going: our raffle. The raffle is a profitable, fun fundraiser that adds to our organization. Anyone who wants a chance to win one of four wonderful opportunities and other great prizes are welcome to call our office for info on who is selling tickets. You can learn more about the raffle from the ad on page 36 of the Midwest Holsteins section.   I would like to wish everyone a safe and bountiful harvest and faith in our industry’s ability to rebound from these difficult prices. I would also like to wish our friends and members who will be exhibiting at World Dairy Expo best of luck.   As always if you have questions or concerns please reach out to me by phone at 612-581-7513 or email Mnsteiny@yahoo.com -Andy Steinhagen

National Directors’ Report

T

he old saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” sure holds true as we find ourselves heading into fall. Since the last June Midwest issue, this summer has been full of interesting activities for Holstein people. The Holstein USA Annual Meeting, hosted by the Michigan Association and held in Traverse, Mich., proved to be an enjoyable time for all attending. A full schedule of Junior contests and activities kept the younger members busy. Delegates were informed of Association updates, and everyone enjoyed the Michigan scenery and hospitality.   Congratulations to all individuals and herds recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. Directors Pat Maddox from California and Paul Burh from Wisconsin were recognized for their six years of dedicated service to the Holstein industry as members of the Holstein USA board. Best Wishes go out to Paul on his recent success in the August primary election for the Wisconsin assembly. He now hopes for final victory in the November general election. Good Luck!   Newly elected to the board were Bill Genasci from California and Robert Webb from Wisconsin. Incumbents John Marshman of New York and John Anderson of Idaho were reelected for a second three-year term.   As the depressed dairy economy continues to haunt farmers, there is still good news to be found in the midst of Junior Holstein work. Junior and senior Junior members continue to promote the registered Holstein cow with pride and enthusiasm. Just 4

watch them and their work with their cattle at the county or state, district or national shows and one can find reason to trust in the future of the dairy industry. Our Midwest dairy family is very proud of their accomplishments and grateful for their leadership! Hopefully, many of you have watched the second edition of “Holstein America” aired on RFD TV. If you missed it, you can still watch it on the Holstein USA website.   On the national level, registrations, transfers, and classifications are down from last year. However, there are positives to be found! Holstein Complete continues to offer financial savings, and field staff are always available for personal assistance. Agri-Tech Dairy Records Processing revenues are very positive, and the on-going IT project is nearing completion. This has been a major undertaking and will benefit both staff and association members. A final positive development has been to see the successful efforts made in demanding the correct labeling of milk and refusing to allow milk substitutes to gain a share of the market with their false advertising.   As World Dairy Expo approaches, it is time to plan ahead in order to make time for this experience of outstanding Holsteins on Parade! Here’s hoping everyone has a safe and bountiful Harvest! Your Midwest Officers and Directors, -Boyd Schaufelberger, Corey Geiger, Mark Kerndt, Robert Webb, and Dale Drendel.

Driven by Passion for Registered Holsteins, By Chelsey Asche, MN Holstein Marketing Manager

L

ike most Minnesota Holstein Association members from throughout Minnesota and South Dakota, Doug and Gregg Ode of Royalwood Farms located near Brandon, S.D., focus on many details to ensure the success of their 350-cow Registered Holstein operation.   While the Ode’s would likely be too humble to admit it, Royalwood Farms has a solid recipe for success as on a daily basis as they strive for quality herd management, maintain open communication between managers and employees, and focus on portraying a positive perception to urban neighbors. All of this attention to detail is driven by a strong passion for breeding Registered Holsteins.

Royalwood’s Evolution

The Odes’ operation started with Bob and Marlyn Ode in 1952. During its early history, the farm was a diverse operation (like many farms were at the time) including cattle, swine, poultry, and sheep. In the mid-sixties the operation become more focused by only raising dairy and swine. The dairy herd consisted of about 35 cows and the Odes farrow-to-finished about 2000-head of swine per year. After graduating from South Dakota State University in 1979 (Gregg) and 1983 (Doug), the brothers joined the operation full time. At that time, Doug and Gregg came up with the new “Royalwood” pre-fix for their Registered Holsteins which also serves as the farm name.   Shortly after Doug and Gregg joined the operation, the Odes decided to get out of the farrow-to-finish business and specifically focus on dairy farming. Their current facilities were not set up to support more cows; however, an opportunity to rent a free-stall facility and parlor close by allowed the Odes to grow their dairy herd.   “Utilizing the rented free-stall and parlor facility helped us learn about managing a free-stall operation and milking cows in a parlor,” Doug explained. “However, the free stall barn was about 100 yards away from the parlor, so we wanted to eventually have our own facility that didn’t have such a distance between the free-stalls and parlor.”   In 2006, the Odes began construction of the facility that they milk in today. They built a four-row free stall barn attached to a double-eight parallel parlor. Over the years, small improvements have been made to maintain and improve the facility, for example, due to the suggestion of Gregg’s son Alex (who is also involved in the operation) wings were added to each side of the free stall barn to expand from a four-row to a six-row barn.   “Before we began building, we visited several facilities,” Doug said. “One thing we noticed was that sometimes parlors can be extremely warm during the summer months. We designed our parlor to have open sides to give the parlor more natural ventilation. During the winter months we can crank up insulated curtains. It may be colder than some would like it in the winter, but it is worth it for the added ventilation in the summer.”   Royalwood Dairy also raises about 200 acres of Alfalfa and 500 acres of corn to feed the dairy herd.

Routine and Communication are Crucial

Today, Doug and Gregg are the managers of Royalwood Dairy. 6

Brothers Doug (left) and Gregg (right) Ode manage Royalwood Dairy which is located near Brandon, S.D.

Gregg’s son Alex also owns about thirty cows and is involved on the farm as much as he can be while also working full-time in Brookings, S.D., at a dairy manufacturing facility. Doug and Gregg both noted that a key to their success of working together is that they each have a defined role and respect the other’s expertise in that role. Doug’s main focus is on managing the cow herd and making the reproduction and breeding decisions. Gregg focuses on the finances and business aspects of the operation. They work together on the other aspects of management.   “We designate everyone to a certain job,” Gregg explained. “We strive for routine in everything we do and hope that almost everything is done at about the same time and in the same way each day. We have five employees who have been with us for several years. Our herdsman has great communication with us about the management of the cows and our employee that oversees the parlor is excellent at making sure all employees know the expectations in the parlor. Our two employees that are responsible for feeding the calves are always getting it done at the same time every day.”   Doug also noted that he appreciates having Gregg’s outside opinion when it comes to making culling decisions. While they both have an appreciation for Registered Holsteins, Doug noted that Gregg will typically have a more objective opinion.   “I tend to be more attached to the cows and certain cow families,” Doug said. “Gregg is good at looking at things from a business perspective and letting me know when it’s time to cull a certain cow I might be attached to.”

A Passion for Registered Holsteins

The Odes have always seen value in registering their herd. Doug noted that his enthusiasm for Registered Holsteins started at a young age from the influence of his father. He noted that his father was always passionate about Registered Holsteins and has always been a great mentor and supporter to Doug and Gregg.   “I remember listening to my dad and a gentleman named Lowell Nelson talk about cattle,” Doug recalled. “I always remember Lowell stopping by the farm. To hear the knowledge he had about cows made me excited about breeding Registered Holsteins.”   One memorable show heifer, Dak-Ode Royalwood Fairchild, who Doug showed as a senior heifer calf at the Sioux Empire fair also played a large role in building his enthusiasm for Registered Holsteins.

Holstein NEWS

MINNESOTA

Odes Focus on Details for Success   “I remember the judge was Doug Fellers from Kansas,” Doug said. “He made Fairchild the Junior Champion in the open show. That didn’t hit very well in the barn since she was a 4-H calf. After the show, Doug came over and talked to me about the heifer and wanted to know more about her. That was a big thrill that made me excited about genetics.”   Dak-Ode Royalwood Fairchild’s dam, Dak-Ode Royalwood Kate is also a memorable matriarch of the Royalwood herd. She was their first cow to score Excellent-90.   Doug also recalled that Loren and Raymond Olson played a role in his enthusiasm for Registered Holsteins.   “I would look forward to seeing Loren and Raymond at the Sioux Empire Farm show each year and still enjoy talking about Holsteins with Loren today,” Doug said.   Today, Doug has certain cow families that he continues to focus on breeding type into.   “You are always hoping that maybe you will hit a hot one,” Doug said. “We haven’t been showing our cows in recent years since our kids have grown up, but I still have an appreciation for an eye-catching cow. It’s still always in the back of my mind to strive for something that could score high and also be good to show.”   As someone with an appreciation for successful cow families, Doug has enjoyed following the success of cows he has purchased in his herd that go back to well-known descendants. One example of such cows is Golden Oaks La Charlize who goes back to Golden-Oaks Champ Rae.   “She is a Lauthority that made 38,000 pounds as a two-year old. I am excited about her Defiant daughter who made over 35,000 pounds of milk, 1169 of Fat and 1067 of Protein on her first lactation. Charlize also has a Monterey daughter that I bred to Mogul. I know Mogul works on that family because Kings-Ransom MG Cleavage EX-95 is a Mogul and she goes back to Champ Rae.”   As an overall strategy for breeding a majority of the herd, about 85 percent of the heifers are bred to sexed semen from high-genomic young bulls. In the past year, they have also implemented a strategy of breeding the lower end of the herd to beef bulls due to the lower milk prices and added premium for selling a beef bull calf.   “We mostly breed for a moderate-sized cow that is very functional with good feet and legs and a strong center support to the udder.” Doug said. “That is the kind of cow that really seems to thrive. You don’t really know they are there but they do a good job day in and day out.”   Through this breeding strategy, among other management factors, Royalwood Farms broke a 31,000 pound rolling herd average for the first time last June. In addition, they have had individual cows in their herd earn recognition as National Production Leaders through Holstein USA. One of the cows who earned recognition as a National Production Leader was Royalwood Doberman 1551. After three lactations she has produced over 140,000 pounds of milk.

Proactive for the Future

Looking to the future for their operation, the Odes try to stay as informed as possible on what they need to do to be successful.   “You need to stay on the cutting edge of technology and information,” Gregg said. “I try to pick out a few seminars during the Central Plains

OCTOBER 2018

Pictured above is the Odes’ free-stall barn which was built in 2006. It was originally a four-row barn and was later expanded to a six-row barn.

Royalwood Farms host a breakfast on the farm annually to educate their urban neighbors about dairy farming. The picture above is of some of the guests visiting their parlor.

Dairy Expo each year that I can take back what I have learned and use that knowledge to better the operation.”   In addition, the Odes acknowledge that public perception of dairy will continue to play a role in the way they can farm in the future. With their proximity to Sioux Falls, the Odes have made it a priority to educate their urban neighbors about the operation. This past summer, they hosted their 11th Annual Breakfast on the Farm at Royalwood Farms. They put on this event through partnering with Ag United of South Dakota.   “It is a lot of work, but it is important,” Doug said. “We had about 450 people attend our first year we hosted it. This past year we had around 1,600 people attend, and I would say for a majority of those people, this was their first time on a farm. We are trying to give them the opportunity to see what a dairy farm looks like and see our main goal is to produce a very high quality product that people can consume and eat.” 7

Grosses are Recognized For Progressive By Chelsey Asche, MN Holstein Marketing Manager

E

ach year, the National Dairy Shrine presents an award called the Progressive Dairy Manager award. This honor recognizes dairy managers between the ages of 21 to 50 who have introduced and applied effective management and business practices that have helped to achieve a more profitable dairy business. In addition, the recipient of this award demonstrates leadership skills in the dairy industry. In 2018, Minnesota Holstein Association members, Randy and Jennifer Gross of Ash Grove Dairy, LLP near Lake, Benton, Minn., will be awarded this honor.   “We are humbled to be on this list of award recipients which includes names of many people who I look up to and respect,” Randy said.   Ash Grove Dairy, LLP., is a relatively young dairy as it was established in 2016. The facility includes a cross-ventilated free-stall barn and a double-20 parallel parlor. Currently, about 1,100 cattle are milked on the dairy with hopes of being able to expand in the future. Calves are housed in groups and fed with automatic calf feeders on the dairy until about 100 days of age. Randy is the operating manager and is in charge of all of the dayto-day management of the dairy. His wife, Jennifer, manages the dairy’s accounting and raises the calves.   Randy and Jennifer have showed they are deserving of the Progressive Dairy Manager award through their diverse experiences in the dairy industry, a strong belief in registered Holsteins and an attitude of optimism to keep Ash Grove Dairy moving forward.

The Path to Ash Grove Dairy

Even though the dairy farm is a new construction, the name has history and personal significance to the Grosses. The name Ash Grove was the original name of Randy’s great-great grandfather’s homestead which was located near Madison, S.D.   Randy and Jennifer’s path to managing their own dairy farm was not as simple as returning to a family farm. Dairying was a part of both Randy and Jennifer’s lives as they were growing up. Randy grew up in Washington state and was involved with showing cattle through the Junior Holstein Association and 4-H. Since his family did not have a dairy farm, his project animals were usually housed at other local dairy farms. Jennifer grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin; however, her parents sold the cows while she was in college at University of Wisconsin-Riverfalls.   “If I look back 25 years ago, managing a dairy of this size was not on my radar,” Randy said. “My goal was to have more of the traditional 60 to 70 cows and have really good genetics. Then I worked in California for an AI company, and I saw what we would consider more commercial herds could still have really good cows. That opened my eyes. I realized you can have a lot of cows and still care about your genetics and the individual care of cows. That was my first ah-ha moment.”   After working in California, Randy worked for a 500-cow registered herd in Wisconsin. Jennifer also worked for this herd as the calf manager. Randy and Jennifer moved to South Dakota in 2004 and helped to start-up and manage a 3,600 cow dairy near Elkton, S.D., for about 10 years.   Then the opportunity fell into place that brought Randy and Jennifer to Ash Grove Dairy in 2016. in the industry over the years helped make the process of starting a dairy farm from scratch go smoothly.   “We were able to begin construction here in May of 2016 and started milking in December 2016,” Randy said. “I had seen and worked with other facilities over the years and was sure that I wanted a cross-ventilated barn. In my experience, a cross-ventilated barn provides a nice environment for the cows year round.”   Randy and Jennifer had been through the experience of starting up a commercial dairy farm as they were involved in the start-up of the previous dairy they managed. Therefore, they knew what a huge undertaking this process would be.   “The first two or three months are overwhelming. You have so many calves per day and we bought cows from all types of facilities. So, all of the cows needed to be trained for the parlor,” Randy said. “It is long days to get cows milked and fed. Once you get through those first few months, things calm down and you can start to put procedures in place and have more normalcy.”   One key that helped in the start-up process of Ash Grove Dairy was that Randy and Jennifer had a great relationship with many of the employees at the previous dairy they managed. They were fortunate to have several of those employees follow them to this dairy.   “It was nice to have employees that you could trust and that you didn’t have to spend time training at the same time,” Randy explained.   In addition, Randy pointed out that knowing what to expect with a start-up also allowed them to be better equipped for the start-up process.”   “We were able to go into it eyes-wide-open knowing what was involved. The first time we were involved in a start-up, we intellectually knew what we were getting into, but we hadn’t been through it,” Randy said. “This time we knew what we were getting into and the sheer volume of work.”   While the dust has settled and the dairy is beginning to find normalcy, they still have milestones and “firsts” ahead. One such milestone is to begin milking cows that were born at Ash Grove Dairy.   “Our first cow that was born here is due on September 27th,” Randy said. “We are excited about that.”

Developing a Genetic Strategy   Dairy genetics has always been something that Randy is enthusiastic about. From a young age, he enjoyed visiting with his

Management of Ash Grove Dairy father and grandfather about Holstein cattle breeding. And today his parents, Randy E. and Susan Gross are partners in the dairy. Together, Randy and his father, along with Dale Kranz of Kranzdale Sales, worked diligently to put together a quality group of registered cattle that provide Ash Grove Dairy a strong genetic base.   “As followers of traditional pedigrees, we have a number of descendants from cow families that I am looking forward to working with,” Randy explained. “We have a couple of branches out of Tri-Day Ashlyn-ET. Another cow goes back to Skagvale Country Elie Gay. We also have four Goldwyns that go back to Ocean-View Lindy Sheen. Those are a few examples. At this point, I really enjoy working with the Lindy Sheen family the most.”   Randy noted that while it would be nice to be able to have some elite genetics to market, the main goal in identifying these cow families is to develop strong genetics in the commercial herd. All of his cattle including the cows with special pedigrees are housed within the commercial dairy.   “In this environment, where the cows are in a pen of 150 or 160 cows, the good ones really rise to the top,” Randy said. “The elite cows don’t receive special treatment.”   Randy and Jennifer are also excited about developing 4-H calves for their sons Emerson & Nolan who are 10 and 5 years old respectively.   “Emerson started to show in 4-H last year,” Jennifer said. “He was pretty excited to win showmanship at achievement days.”   Ash Grove Dairy uses a combination of proven and genomic sires when breeding the commercial herd. Randy noted that he has began to intentionally select for A2A2 sires.   “Consumers are already buying into A2A2 and demanding it,” Randy said. “Our milk goes for cheese and there is no A2A2 cheese, yet. However, in the future there may be. I am not necessarily gaining anything by breeding for A2A2 now, but it is more of an insurance to have a head start if someday there would be premiums for A2A2.”

Randy is pictured in the cross-ventilated barn at Ash Grove Dairy. Randy selected this type of facility because of the ideal environment it provides cows year-round.

Jennifer is pictured in one of the group calf pens at Ash Grove Dairy. She is in charge of all of the calf raising and has had success with automatic calf feeders.

Holstein Association Provides Value

Randy noted that breeding a commercial dairy herd and a registered dairy herd are not always mutually exclusive. However, he believes that his Registered Holsteins often rise above the cows that do not have as much identification behind them.   “I used to have a code set up in Dairy Comp at the previous dairy to show that the registered cows usually performed better in production, days open and various other parameters.”   It is this belief in Registered Holsteins that has kept Randy and Jennifer involved in the Minnesota Holstein Association.   “The value in the association comes from registering cows and having the information needed to breed a more profitable cow,” Randy said. “Beyond that, the state sales offer marketing opportunities and also the opportunity for young people to be involved. My interest in Holsteins stems from becoming a junior member as early as I could back in Washington. I have been involved in a state Holstein Association ever since.”   Furthermore, it is that love for the Holstein cow that keeps the Grosses going during more difficult times in the industry.   “Times are tough in the industry,” Randy said. “You do the best you can with what you have and ride it out. But we love what we do.”

Holstein Show Highlights Making Holstein History with a new class for Summer Jr. 2-Yr-Olds

The Illinois Holstein Association was pleased to present the inaugural class of Summer Jr. 2-Yr-Olds! Thought to be the first in the nation, this class was started to showcase young cows born after June 1, 2016 as the industry is moving towards calving at a younger age. Some of these are even Fall Yearlings in Milk! A beautiful turnout of 11 young individuals were placed by Judge Mandi Bue at the 2018 Illinois Holstein Championship Show in Bloomington on July 20. 1.

2018 Illinois Holstein Championship Show Dedication L-R: Illinois Holstein President Ed Smith, Kathy Miller, Madeline Schultz, Kaye Miller, Bob Miller, Emily Sheehan and Kaylen Miller

The 2018 Illinois Holstein Championship Show was dedicated to Bob and Kaye Miller. As young entrepreneurs, the couple began Mil-R-Mor Farm in northern Illinois more than six decades ago. Valuing a close-knit community, they eagerly committed themselves to supporting others in the Illinois Holstein industry and contributing to the state show. One of their favorite competitions is the bred and owned championship. Not only did Bob and Kaye win this award in 1983, 1984, and 1987, they have also donated roses for bred & owned class winners for decades. Supporting youth has always been important to them. Whether serving in the ring or sponsoring awards, Bob and Kaye have been ever present to champion the next generations of Holstein enthusiasts at the state show. Together, Bob and Kaye bred over 200 excellent cows and numerous state and national production leaders. They developed C Glenridge Citation Roxy EX-97 into one of the greatest brood cows of all time and her descendants can be found in every corner of the globe. From pioneering embryo transfer in the 1970s to judging Holsteins in Australia in the 2010s, Bob and Kaye have been world-recognized leaders. They remain humble and appreciative of all the opportunities Holsteins have given them. One of their greatest joys is being part of a wonderful family that values the farm legacy they built. We thank them for all their contributions to the dairy industry and the Holstein breed, and most of all, for enriching our lives with their friendship. Congratulations! Youth also complete an online leadership portfolio and earn points based on his or her project leadership, dairy-related activities and community involvement. Bonus points are given to individuals receiving champion and reserve champion honors. A committee of judges selects the top 25 based on a scorecard format. To date, the event has awarded more than $360,000 to deserving Minnesota 4-H youth.   The Rising Star program will annually honor UP TO 10 youth who have completed 6th through 8th grades with an award of $500 to encourage younger 4-H members to participate in the 4-H dairy showcase. This year’s Rising Star honoree is Adhyn Schell of Winona County.   The Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase is a joint effort between the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association and the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Project Development Committee. 11

MHA Corporate Sponsorship Program The Minnesota Holstein Association (MHA) was organized in 1910 for the purpose of improving and promoting the Holstein breed of dairy cattle. The MHA consists of 700 members and is open to all people interested in the dairy industry. The mission of the Minnesota Holstein Association is, "To enhance the lives and profitability of all dairy producers and enthusiasts by providing opportunities for education, marketing, recognition and socialization." As dedicated supporters of local registered Holstein dairy farmers, businesses have the opportunity to join and support the Minnesota Holstein Association through our Corporate Sponsor Program. This program has five levels of sponsorship: Grand Supreme Champion, Supreme Champion, Grand Champion and Honorable Mention. Each level includes recognition as a dedicated sponsor of the Minnesota Holstein Association. As a corporate sponsor for our association, businesses help the Minnesota Holstein Association provide opportunities for dairy producers across the state. If you and your business are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor or if you do business with a company you feel would benefit from becoming a corporate sponsor please visit the Minnesota Holstein website and print off a corporate sponsorship program agreement and flyer. Once completed the agreement and payment can be sent to the MHA office. A percentage of the sponsorship is given back to the local clubs along with their rebates in May.
