DOMINANCE

CONTINUED!

Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota,

so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 9 of the 18 contests across the past 6 contests held at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 22 of the 36 contests across the past 12 held at these 3 locations. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. In 2021, the University of Minnesota was 1st overall in both the Vernon County (Viroqua, WI) and the NAILE (Louisville, KY) collegiate contests. If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge

programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu

Tracy Schaefer MHA Board President

The fall weather has been absolutely beautiful so far, and I hope it stays this way for a while. As fall field work is wrapping up, I am hearing good reports despite that some areas lacked rainfall this year.

What a fabulous World Dairy Expo this year! I am sure I am not the only one that was truly excited to be back in Madison admiring all of the best cows in the world. It was great to see all the Minnesota exhibitors there doing what they love the most. Many great cows from multiple breeds made a tremendous showing. Congratulations to everyone that exhibited! MHA is excited to have a new Marketing Manager on board. Brooke Roberts started her new position with us on November 1. Welcome Brooke! We were excited about the interest in our second annual fall online sale. With 19 lots offered, the sale was our most successful yet, grossing over $14,000 on the eight animal lots and one embryo lot that sold. Thank you to everyone who consigned. We look forward to continued online sale offerings in the future. We continue to make plans for the 2022 National Convention to be held in Sioux Falls, June 27July 1. If you are interested in helping with the planning, let the office know. It will take many volunteers to pull off a great event. In closing, you can reach me anytime by phone or email. I love talking cows and everything that has to do with this great association we are all a part of. Merry Christmas, Tracy Schaefer, MHA President

MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS DECEMBER 2021

Breeder’s Seminar: Back on the Road in 2022

with guest presenter Steve Maddox

MHA is excited to welcome Steve Maddox of Riverdale, California, to Minnesota in the first week of February for the 2022 Breeder’s Seminar. From February 1-4, 2022, Maddox will visit six locations throughout Minnesota and South Dakota, sharing his wealth of experience and knowledge acquired from a lifetime of passionate involvement in the dairy industry. Meet Steve Maddox Being born into a dairy family, Steve Maddox’s passion for dairying and the dairy industry started at a young age. Maddox met his wife, Brenda, in 1976 at the California State Fair while showing registered Holsteins. They have welcomed three children into their family: Melissa, Christina and Stephen, Jr. Maddox’s passion continued to intensify as he pursued leadership roles in the dairy industry and beyond. He has served his local co-op board, Holstein USA, DairyAmerica, Dairy Management Inc., the local soccer and baseball leagues, his county fair board and the school board, all the while managing 4,300 milking and dry Holsteins and 4,500 replacement heifers. Alongside the dairy, the family farm grows alfalfa, triticale, wine grapes, almonds, pistachios and olives – totaling 9,000 farmable acres. Maddox describes his farm as a large family partnership that includes his wife, Brenda, who does payroll; son, Stephen Maddox, Jr., who manages the farming operation; and daughter-in-law, Haley, who is in charge of marketing and promotions. Maddox Dairy was an expansion from the original family farm started by his father, Doug, and named for his

grandparents, Rufus and Ann. RuAnn Dairy is now managed by his brother, Pat, and his wife, Mary. The two brothers are partners in RuAnn Genetics, a resurrected elite Holstein genetics company that was originally started by Maddox’s father, Doug, who would travel to local dairymen & sell bull semen out of the back of his car. Maddox estimates 150,000 people have visited the dairies over his 38 years at Maddox Dairy. The farm and cows continue to draw attention. The use of solar energy and a duel-fuel system, along with new technology to mix their irrigation and manure water helped them win a U.S. Dairy Sustainability Award. “My deep seeded passions are family, farming & serving the community,” said Maddox. “I’m thankful to have a lifelong career that encompasses all three.” Please watch the Minnesota Holstein Association Facebook page and check your email for Breeder’s Seminar time and location updates as the dates approach!

Kiefland Holsteins BY KILEY LICKFELT

C

had and Kendra Kieffer, along with their children Brea (18), Ava (15), and Bryson (8) are the co-owners and operators of Kiefland Holsteins in Utica, Minnesota. They co-own the operation with Chad’s parents, Gary and Linda Kieffer. The current farm location was purchased in 1979 from Gary’s father. Today, the Kieffer family is milking 330 Holstein cows with five Lely robots and farming 700 acres of corn and alfalfa. Over the years, Kiefland has seen many changes and advancements. When Gary and Linda moved to the farm, they owned just 12 cows. They worked up to milking a total of 70 cows, transitioning from a loafing shed to the 51-cow stall barn. In 1998, a freestall barn was built while the old barn was converted into a double 10 parallel parlor and holding area. As the expansions began and big decisions about the future of the farm were made within the family, the time came to investigate a technological change – robotic milkers. By 2010, it was time to prepare for the installation of the robots. An addition was placed on the existing freestall barn to accommodate more stalls, a room for the three robots, a milk house, an office, a utility room and a restroom. The family’s vision was becoming a reality. Lo and behold, in the spring of 2011, three Lely robots (A3

10

MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS DECEMBER 2021

Next) were installed on the farm, followed by two more robots in 2012. A Lely Juno was another advancement incorporated into the farm at this time to increase efficiency. Farm operations became streamlined enough for Kiefland to condense from six full-time employees on the farm down to three. Ultimately, the insertion of the robots led to a 50 percent estimated decrease in labor costs. An increase in flexibility for the family to participate in their off-farm activities and jobs came with the implementation of these new technologies. Off the farm, Chad is a full-time dairy nutritionist and robotic consultant for Ag Partners, while Kendra works as a full-time secretary at the kids’ elementary school in St. Charles. Chad’s father, Gary, does custom hay cutting and harvesting, and his mother, Linda, is a part-time bank teller. When the family is not working on or off the farm, they love spending quality time as a family at dairy shows. Showing their cattle is a very meaningful experience for the Kieffer family. When asked if the family was particularly proud of any special show successes, Chad said, “All of them. Just having children interested in the dairy industry, showing and having an appreciation for great quality dairy cattle is a huge success and reward.”

A few of their highest accomplishments discussed were their 2020 All American Junior Spring Yearling nomination and exhibiting at the 2021 World Dairy Expo. Kiefland Warrior Shania-Red was one of Kieffer’s fine heifers who walked the colored shavings this year. The Junior Champion Red and White heifer from Minnesota’s District 1 Show placed seventh in the Junior Red and White Fall Calf class at Expo. Chad and Kendra strive for profitability, and to have a well-respected herd that is marketable from both type and genomic perspectives, which is one reason that they choose to raise registered Holsteins on their farm. Another reason the Kieffers lean towards registered Holsteins is their passion for superior quality cattle. “We want to appreciate what we have in the barn each day,” said Chad and Kendra. When it comes to breeding their cattle, the Kieffers have a few key priorities. First and foremost, a cow with a good udder is of utmost importance. High fat and protein, good type, FLC, DPR, PL, teat length, and teat placement are also important attributes that the family breeds for. Ideally, the Kieffers are looking for a cow that can stay on track reproductively. They admire a cow that can freshen, be bred once, dry up, and during that time produce over 2100 lbs. RIGHT: Kiefland Warrior Shania-Red. BELOW: Jacobs Doorman Lisy-ET awarded junior champion of the 2020 Minnesota Holstein Association State Junior Show as a spring yearling.

of solids throughout her lactation. Additionally, they strive to have cows in the barn with a classification score of 85 points at minimum. One of Kiefland’s keys to success is by working smarter and not always harder – an area where the robots and other technologies implemented on the farm have had an extreme impact. Paying attention to the details in every task is crucial to Kiefland’s operations. It is important to the Kieffers to set goals for themselves and review them annually, evaluating if they are attaining them or if adjustments must be made to improve the business. “Number one – have a passion for what you do. Number two – make as much money as you can while doing it. Never switch those around,” commented Chad. Looking ahead to the future, the Kieffers will continue striving to be as profitable as possible. As a family and business, they want to continue to meet the demand of consumers in the industry, while helping provide insight and support to other dairy farmers interested in robots. Kiefland Holsteins hopes to continue building on their show herd and to attain more All-American nominations in the coming years. The Kieffers’ “Kiefland” prefix will continue to be a well-respected presence in the dairy industry for years to come. This story was written by Kiley Lickfelt, an MJHA member from Hutchinson, MN. Kiley is a sophomore studying Agricultural Business and Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin River Falls.

Golden Gopher Futurity XLVII - two-year old futurity -

The Golden Gopher Futurity is sponsored and governed by the Minnesota Holstein Association. Its purpose is to stimulate interest in breeding and developing outstanding Holsteins for production and type regardless of individual herd size. It is open to any Minnesota breeder of Holsteins identified through Holstein Association USA, Inc. This will be a continuing program with the 2022 competition designated as Futurity No. XLVII, 2023 Futurity No. XLVIII, etc. One nomination is required for each animal that competes. Competition will be in two categories production or type - and animals may be entered in one or both categories. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner and must be made on regulation entry blanks, along with specified fees, postmarked by the nomination date and other rules. All money received from the nominations in each Futurity class shall make up the purse entered on the basis of their placings. Any registered Holstein female, owned by a Minnesota Holstein Association member, and born from 9/01/20 through 8/31/21 is eligible for Golden Gopher Futurity XLVII. One payment of $25 shall be paid by 1/15/22. A breeder may nominate any number of females in either the production or type class or both. Nominations must be postmarked no later than the due date. CLASS NO. 1: PRODUCTION Animals entered must freshen no later than age two-years and six months. Herd must be on DHIR or standard DHIA test, all records to be adjusted

to two times a day milking. No ownersampler records will be eligible. Animals must have a completed lactation before 12/31/23 to be considered for Golden Gopher Futurity XLVII. Lactations ending in 2024 will be in competition for the Futurity No. XLVIII. Awards will be based on 305 day mature equivalent milk, fat and protein production using a 3.5% test base for fat and 3.2% for protein. Animals must have a completed lactation of at least 275 days. Records will be verified by Minnesota DHI. CLASS NO. 2: TYPE Animals nominated will be shown in a special two-year old futurity class at the Minnesota State Fair, winners and awards to be based on the placing at that show. Showing in this class does not eliminate her from showing in the All-Minnesota two-year old classes. All rules and regulations of the show are to be adhered to. Placings will be made by an official show judge. The purse shall consist of all money received by nomination fees, less the expenses for its promotion and management. All money will be kept in a special fund and used only for futurity purposes. Money received for Class 1 Production nominations will be used only for that class and money received for Class 2 Type nominations will be used only for those animals entered in that class.

The money in each class will be divided among placings as follow: First Place - 15 %; 2nd Place - 10%; 3rd Place - 8%; 4th Place - 6%; 5th Place 5%; 6-10 Placings - 4%; 11-15 Placings - 3%; 16-25 Placings - 2%. Remaining 1% to be used for administration fees. If fewer than 25 animals are competing, the remainder will be divided equally among the entries. Production winners will be recognized at the Minnesota All-Breeds Convention following the year of competition. All nomination fees are committed to the purse. No refunds will be made whether an animal completes or eligibility is discontinued. Any animal sold after being nominated will remain eligible if the new owner is a Minnesota Holstein member. The Minnesota Holstein Association is sponsoring and governing the futurity and will not be responsible for any accident or injury in connection with the show.

Over the years, they lived near Osakis, Maple Plain, Manannah, and Litchfield. Bernie worked on several dairy farms before he and Aggie purchased their own near Manannah which they named Manannah-Valley. MHA Corporate Sponsorship Program The Minnesota Holstein Association (MHA) was organized in 1910 for the purpose of improving and promoting the Holstein breed of dairy cattle. The MHA consists of 700 members and is open to all people interested in the dairy industry. The mission of the Minnesota Holstein Association is, "To enhance the lives and profitability of all dairy producers and enthusiasts by providing opportunities for education, marketing, recognition and socialization." As dedicated supporters of local registered Holstein dairy farmers, businesses have the opportunity to join and support the Minnesota Holstein Association through our Corporate Sponsor Program. This program has five levels of sponsorship: Grand Supreme Champion, Supreme Champion, Grand Champion and Honorable Mention. Each level includes recognition as a dedicated sponsor of the Minnesota Holstein Association. As a corporate sponsor for our association, businesses help the Minnesota Holstein Association provide opportunities for dairy producers across the state. If you and your business are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor or if you do business with a company you feel would benefit from becoming a corporate sponsor please visit the Minnesota Holstein website and print off a corporate sponsorship program agreement and flyer. Once completed the agreement and payment can be sent to the MHA office. A percentage of the sponsorship is given back to the local clubs along with their rebates in May. If you have questions or would like to know more about the program, please contact a MHA board member or the MHA office. Your assistance in helping our organization grow is greatly appreciated.
