UNMATCHED DOMINANCE!

Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota, so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 8 of the 15 contests held over the past 5 years at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 20 of the 30 contests in these 3 contests over the past 10 years. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu

From the Minnesota Holstein Staff Greetings from the MHA staff! Can you believe it’s finally December? As we write this, Thanksgiving has just passed, and we can’t help but reflect on a few things we as staff are thnkful for this year. First, you, the membership, for your continued excitement, support, and passion for this association. The board, for their hard work on all MHA activities and events, and of course Amanda Bedtke to the Holstein cow, who created this wonderful MHA Business Manager community and continues to provide delicious dairy products. The year of 2020 certainly has been a trying year, but along with the few things above, we are grateful to have hosted a wonderful State Show and Field Day this summer and our first ever Online Fall Sale. In this publication, you will find a Membership Directory. At a time when it seems nothing is normal, we encourage you all to reach out to your Rachel Coyne fellow Holstein breeders and catch up over the MHA Marketing Manager phone or even a letter. Also in this publication, you will find tons of

information on the upcoming events in 2021. Please pay attention to the dates and details listed. If any changes arise, we will alert you as soon as possible. As always, we would like to thank the corporate sponsors of the Minnesota Holstein Association. You can see a listing of our corporate sponsors on the back inside cover. As we go into a new year, it is a great time to educate companies about this program. Contact the MHA office if you would like materials to share with a potential corporate sponsor in your area. We also want to share a sincere thank you to all of the breeders, universities, clubs and businesses that chose to advertise in this year’s publications. Your support makes this publication possible. Rachel will be celebrating one year with MHA on January 1. It has been quite the first year with all that has, or rather has not, happened, but a great year nonetheless. Amanda is wrapping up her third year with MHA and continues to enjoy serving the membership. We wish everyone a blessed holiday season and prosperous new year. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. Amanda can be reached at minnesotaholstein@gmail.com or by phone at (320)-2590637. Square Deal Dairy The Otte Family

Written by: Rachel Coyne

Square Deal Dairy is owned by Blake and Chicky Otte in Randolf, Minnesota. Both from dairy farms themselves, Blake and Chicky chose the dairy farm life for their family, and in 1997 expanded on Blake’s father’s dairy farm. That expanded again in 2001, 2008, and most recently this spring when they in the coming months. The name ‘Square Deal Dairy’ hails from ‘Square Deal Percherons’ another side of agriculture that past generations of the family were involved in prior to dairy farming. Blake and Chicky’s kids, Tyler, Bret, and Eric, are all involved on the farm. Tyler, their eldest son, currently lives and works on the farm as the herdsman with his wife Kelsey, and their two sons. Middle son, Bret, works off the farm as a nutritionist, although he does nutrition work on the farm and helps out feeding cows on the weekends, along with his wife, Kayla, and their daughter. Eric, the youngest of the three, is in charge of the crops and manure handling and assists with heifer chores. In addition to the Otte family, 10 full-time employees work at Square Deal Dairy.

The herd today is about 25% Registered Holstein, and going forward, that number will continue to grow. Each time the herd is expanded or animals are registering the remaining animals is possible. Out of the 600 cows that are currently milking, there are about 25 cows and their offspring that are bred for high type. The rest of the commercial herd is bred for Net Merit, DPR, and high components. In addition to these traits, the Ottes like to look at high, wide rear udders and sound feet and legs as they walk through their barn. Current bulls in the commercial herd breediing program at Square Deal Dairy are: Shelby, Metropolis, Einstein, Fastball, Zasberilla, Positive, Circus, and Pyramid. Tyler’s favorite fresh heifers in the commercial herd are sired by: are serviced to one of the following bulls: Milktime, Electric, Imax, Farwin, The Ottes have been using a double ovsynch since August, and prior to that they used a presynch ovsynch. For the past three months, they have had a 25% pregnancy rate across the mature cows, and a 31% pregnancy rate for we took the roof off our barn in our expansion this spring so the cows faced more elements during that time,” said Tyler. The pregnancy rate is revcovering from that remodel, and is expected to rise even more. “The lower 35% to 40% of the cow herd is bred to beef. We run a DPR analysis, and the best and most fertile cows get sexed semen. A goal of ours is to breed a more fertile next generation,” shared Tyler. Heifers get two units of sexed semen, and the high nation has been used at Square Deal Dairy since 1962, a practice installed by Tyler’s grandfather.

10 parallel parlor and return from the parlor to recycled manure bedded freestalls. The Ottes have been using recycled manure for bedding for eight years. “It’s nice to see that we produce our own bedding. The recycled manure is also more economical for us with our location than reclaimed sand would be,” said Tyler. All youngstock are raised by the Ottes themselves. From calves to bred heifers, females are housed on site. After bred, heifers are housed at a neighboring facility, however the Ottes still do all feeding and monitoring of those to keep operations consistent. 8

In addition to their breeding protocols, the Ottes also utilize ET and IVF in their program. Current red bulls in their program include: Jordy, Diamondback, Warrior, and Analyst. For black, type animals, they use Sidekick, or Doorman on anything that doesn’t already have him in their pedigree.

bottom of classes, and now we have bred some good animals from those original calves.” The Otte brothers felt that their breeding program had progressed enough to offer their calves to others, especially targeted at youth, since the Ottes have all aged out of youth shows. The sale is a way for the Otte’s to have some fun while still making a little money. Making successful show heifers for youth and the occasional heifer that can dance with the best in open shows is their goal. A 2019 sale heifer, SDDOTTE Def Skittles-RED was Nominated AllOntario Fall Calf and placed 5th at the 2019 Canadian Royal Winter Fair as a milking yearling. Many of Skittles sisters and family members have also been very successful for their new owners in the show ring, all going back to the brother’s original red purchase. “We couldn’t have asked for more from this cow and this is a huge achievement for our farm. To have bred a heifer that not only was good enough to exhibit at the Royal, but to go on and calve in and be a max scored milking yearling for the new owners is something we have never imagined. It is a great accolade for our breeding program and farm,” stated Tyler. He continued, “Skittles has 10 sisters at the farm with many more family members in our embryo inventory.” The Ottes are planning their third sale for March 17, 2021 via CattleClub.com. Each sale has 15 or 16 head sold. Of the 45 head that will be sold after this next sale, 25 of those animals go back to one cow. The Ottes take pride in being able to offer their genetics to buyers, especially youth that can showcase their animals. As a growing family with the next generation coming up, the future looks bright at Square Deal Dairy. Red, she is a Picolo-Red daughter out of an Advent purchased from Ju-Lar. She has pregnancies Champion. Otte’s have embryos by Warrior-Red and Diamondback from Snoozer.

This will be a continuing program with the 2021 competition designated as Futurity No. XLVI, 2022 Futurity No. XLVII, etc. One nomination is required for each animal that competes. Competition will be in two categories - production or type - and animals may be entered in one or both categories. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner and must be made on regulation entry blanks, along with specified fees, postmarked by the nomination date and other rules. All money received from the nominations in each Futurity class shall make up the purse entered on the basis of their placings. Any registered Holstein female, owned by a Minnesota Holstein Association member, and born from 9/01/19 through 8/31/20 is eligible for Golden Gopher Futurity XLVI. One payment of $25 shall be paid by 3/15/21. A breeder may nominate any number of females in either the production or type class or both. Nominations must be postmarked no later than the due date. CLASS NO. 1-PRODUCTION Animals entered must freshen no later than age two-years and six months. Herd must be on DHIR or standard DHIA test, all records to be adjusted

Placings will be made by an official show judge. The purse shall consist of all money received by nomination fees, less the expenses for its promotion and management. All money will be kept in a special fund and used only for futurity purposes. Money received for Class 1 Production nominations will be used only for that class and money received for Class 2 Type nominations will be

used only for those animals entered in that class. The money in each class will be divided among placings as follow: First Place - 15 %; 2nd Place - 10%; 3rd Place - 8%; 4th Place - 6%; 5th Place 5%; 6-10 Placings - 4%; 11-15 Placings - 3%; 16-25 Placings - 2%. Remaining 1% to be used for administration fees. If fewer than 25 animals are competing, the remainder will be divided equally among the entries. Production winners will be recognized at the Minnesota AllBreeds Convention following the year of competition. All nomination fees are committed to the purse. No refunds will be made whether an animal completes or eligibility is discontinued. Any animal sold after being nominated will remain eligible if the new owner is a Minnesota Holstein member. The Minnesota Holstein Association is sponsoring and governing the futurity and will not be responsible for any accident or injury in connection with the show.

MHA Corporate Sponsorship Program The Minnesota Holstein Association (MHA) was organized in 1910 for the purpose of improving and promoting the Holstein breed of dairy cattle. The MHA consists of 700 members and is open to all people interested in the dairy industry. The mission of the Minnesota Holstein Association is, "To enhance the lives and profitability of all dairy producers and enthusiasts by providing opportunities for education, marketing, recognition and socialization." As dedicated supporters of local registered Holstein dairy farmers, businesses have the opportunity to join and support the Minnesota Holstein Association through our Corporate Sponsor Program. This program has five levels of sponsorship: Grand Supreme Champion, Supreme Champion, Grand Champion and Honorable Mention. Each level includes recognition as a dedicated sponsor of the Minnesota Holstein Association. As a corporate sponsor for our association, businesses help the Minnesota Holstein Association provide opportunities for dairy producers across the state. If you and your business are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor or if you do business with a company you feel would benefit from becoming a corporate sponsor please visit the Minnesota Holstein website and print off a corporate sponsorship program agreement and flyer. Once completed the agreement and payment can be sent to the MHA office. A percentage of the sponsorship is given back to the local clubs along with their rebates in May. If you have questions or would like to know more about the program, please contact a MHA board member or the MHA office. Your assistance in helping our organization grow is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!
