Hello again,   As I am writing this, Mother Nature is reminding us that it still is winter in Minnesota. It has been a pretty nice winter up until this point, so it is kind of hard to complain. Hopefully everyone gets through this cold streak Tracy Schaefer without too many problems. MHA Board President We had to make another difficult decision a month ago to cancel the All-Breeds Convention scheduled for March. The current Covid restrictions in Minnesota would have limited the number of people per room and made it very difficult to serve food at the convention. However, we as a board felt it was still important to host an Annual Meeting this year. We are planning on hosting the Annual Meeting at the Mcleod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson on May 8, 2021. Committee meetings will take place in the morning, and the annual meeting will be held in the afternoon. We are also having Palmyra Farms come to do a live Breeders Seminar that afternoon.   The Minnesota Holstein Field Day will be June 26th in Lake Benton at Ash-Grove Dairy. A very action packed day is being planned. State Show will be July 6-10, 2021, in Worthington, MN, and will be hosted by the Southwest Holstein club. Please stay tuned to Facebook and the website for any future changes,.As we all know, things tend to change with the times lately. As always, if you have questions or concerns, you can reach me at 320-360-5188 or at tracyschaefer@hotmail.com.

Evolution of a Farmer Isaac Nelson, MInnesota DJM "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." - Lao Tzu. April 3, 2002, was the day my parents, Brian and Jill Nelson, my brother, Josh, and I moved from familiar jobs in Wisconsin to my family farm in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, which has grown to the current 150 milking cows. While I did not understand it at the time, this was my first step in a journey of a thousand miles to becoming a bona fide farm boy and fifth generation dairy farmer. Baby Steps   When I was three, my parents deemed me old enough to show and taught me how to lead dairy cows. After the initial lesson of "hold on and don't let go", my showing career took flight. I have been showing ever since, and many of my fondest memories and friendships have come through the shows at the local, state, and national level, including World Dairy Expo. Walking The Walk   I find dairy farming is made interesting by the events that happen in between the routine tasks that get done the same way day after day. The routine schedule I follow has me starting chores with feeding calves grain and protein/mineral pellets followed by alfalfa hay. Then off to the cow barn, where I bring three groups of cows up to get milked, one group at a time. While the cows get milked, I clean out the sand bedded free stalls and scrape the manure using a skid steer with a tire scraper. Then I head over to our baby calf barn, where I feed milk to anywhere between eight and thirty calves. They are fed three quarts twice-a-day for five weeks, then half rate for five days, then five days once a day feeding until they are eating grain and weaned. After the calves are fed and cows milked, I clean the parlor with a scraper and firehose. However, more than likely something will happen to throw off the routine chores; whether it's a calf being born, heifers getting out or a piece of machinery breaking. I have learned that adversity happens on a dairy farm and that adapting to change is part of the job. Into The Unknown   Being the son of a farmer has me learning a lot more than just the basic chores. When I was around the age of 13, my mother started teaching me the odds and ends that I should know if I want to take over the farm one day. I learned how to deliver a calf, as well as how to give the newborn vaccinations; we use Calf Guard and Bovine Ecolizer+C. For the mother, we give her YMCP mixed with a bucket of warm water to rehydrate her and give her an energy boost. I give her a Bovikalc bolus (calcium supplement) and milk her as soon as possible. She gets a second bolus 12 to24 hours later. After she is milked, I will feed whatever colostrum she produced to her calf. If there is not a gallon of it to give the calf, I will supplement it with colostrum replacer. I furthered my understanding of the things I know about calf care from a Calf College, put on by Purina/Land O'Lakes, which I attended for calf managers. I was the youngest person to ever attend it at the age of 14. I learned how to use a Brix Refractometer to check colostrum quality. I also learned about dehorning with paste, how to draw blood, and how to perform a necropsy (autopsy).   During summer and fall I help with bailing hay, and in the other months I haul manure to the fields to use as fertilizer. When I was 15-years-old I learned to train new 6

employees and show them how to do daily chores, To this day, I have trained over a dozen employees. When I train new employees, I make sure to capitalize on why every detail of a job is important, as well as keep a close eye to make sure protocols are being followed. In addition to training new employees, I also started milking on my own in our double 8 herringbone parlor from time to time. It may seem like a lot of responsibility, but these jobs are not even half of what I learned in the following year. Stepping Up   There comes a time in everyone's life where they are expected to step up and grab the bull by the horns. This time for me was the start of my junior year in high school when new challenges came to my family's farm. Unfortunately, at the end of the summer of 2016 we lost all three of our part-time employees. To make up for the loss of our employees, I had to step up on the farm and put in much more work than was expected of me. I started working three to four mornings during the school week from 5 AM to 6:30 AM, leaving with just enough time to get to school. After class I would go to my extracurricular practices, and following that, I would return home for afternoon chores. Unlike most teens, my weekends often involved working both morning and afternoon shifts on my farm. With shifts taking about three and a half to four hours each, I logged close to thirty hours most weeks. In the same year, I was deemed responsible enough by my father to mix TMR for the milking cows and dry cows on the farm. At the time, it was a struggle balancing farm work, school work and activities, and a social life, but the whole experience taught me time management and to appreciate employees while you have them, because they will not always be around.

One Step Forward And Two Steps Back   Stray voltage has affected my farm and my herd substantially. It was not something new to the farm but rather something newly diagnosed as a problem. For the past several years, my farm has had problems with high incidence of illnesses, death loss, and many behavioral issues that our vets, nutritionist, and numerous other consultants were at a loss as to how to stop and prevent. It killed a large number of our good genetic, high classifying cows since it was diagnosed as the problem and the few years prior. In 2016, that list included my first cow, Belinda (EX 94), and her daughter. This greatly affected me because Belinda dropped dead in our parlor moments after giving 70+ pounds of milk - not something a healthy cow should do. In our best efforts to counter the effects of stray voltage, every job had to be perfect, no corners cut and nothing overlooked, or else a cow, heifer or bull could die. Nothing can be left until later, as later was often too late. Sometimes, despite preventative measures and best efforts, results are heart-breaking.

A Hopeful Step Ahead   I was at a speech tournament the day Belinda died. My mom was milking at the time and was able to get the vet out immediately to remove her ovaries and bring them to TransOva to perform IVF on the eggs they could collect. It was a long shot, but Belinda beat the odds and had the most successful terminal IVF that the team had ever had at the time - fourteen number one embryos by none other than the great sire: Regancrest Elton Durham. In November of 2016, the first three calves were born, two heifers and a bull, and my herd was given the chance to bounce back from the loss of two of my cows. A Hop, Skip, And A Jump   The first time I ever became actively involved with the Junior Holstein Association was when I attended the Minnesota Junior Holstein Convention at age five, although I have been a member since I was three. The reason I had attended at such a young age was because my mom was the adult advisor to the Minnesota Juniors, and I have attended every year the convention has been held since! One of my favorite parts of convention is touring different farms throughout Minnesota and seeing firsthand what others farmers are doing to get the most out of their dairy animals, with the hopes that I can bring back some of the techniques I see to my own farm. While I do not currently have an active role on the Minnesota Junior Board, I have many friends who are, and I do my best to help give advice and ideas to them to improve my state’s junior association any way I can. I also enjoy participating in the different dairy competitions including Dairy Bowl and Dairy Jeopardy. I have earned a trip to the National Convention to participate in the National Dairy Jeopardy contest three times and Dairy Bowl twice. In 2017, I applied for Minnesota’s Young Distinguished Junior Member award and won, allowing me to be eligible for the award at the National level. After appearing at nationals as a YDJM candidate, I was selected as one of the National YDJMs as well. These competitions and awards have given me the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with my fellow dairy advocates and have allowed me to vastly expand my knowledge of the dairy industry and network with people from all over the United States.

way of keeping records and tracking the growth and progress of my personal dairy herd. Through my SAE, I was able to compare the production abilities of my cows, visualize extensively my expenses, income, and net profits, and it helped me to dive deeper into why I make the decisions I make with my cattle. The dedication I put into this project was not purely for fun, but was part of a competition as well. The senior year of my high school career I perfected my SAE records and compiled them together for the regional contest, where I won and proceeded onto the state level. After winning in my SAE division at the state level it was time for nationals. My application, records, and knowledge of my herd helped me to overcome my competitors and become the National Dairy Production Entrepreneurship SAE winner in 2018. This achievement was not just another award for me, it was a confirmation that how I was handling my herd was exceptional, and that my passion for my dairy cattle was stronger than ever. Paving My Way Through College   My long exposure and ever expanding involvement in the dairy industry has made it clear in my mind that I want to spend my life working in the dairy industry. After being accepted into the University of Minnesota –College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resource Sciences, I decided to major in Animal Science and Food Science. Since my freshman year I have been a member of the Gopher Dairy Club (GDC) and the Ag fraternity Delta Theta Sigma (DTS). Through the GDC, I have had the opportunity to help run various FFA judging contests, plan events and reunions for alumni, as well as listen in to presentations opportunities in dairy and other related fields. As a sophomore I was elected to be the assistant manager of the GDC Milkshake booth during the MN state fair, and I am the current officer-at-large. Being a member of DTS has offered me beneficial opportunities I would not otherwise have had. Throughout my time at DTS I have been the secretary, Vice President, and am the current President. I have also chaired numerous committees through these executive team positions. My time at the U of M has taught me business promotion, the interview process, website design and management, Robert’s Rules of Order and the conducting of a formal business meeting, and the benefits of proper record keeping through DTS. I have learned business and employee management through the GDC booth, and more than I could have ever imagined about nutrition, genetics and production of Dairy cows through my coursework. Running Into My Future   I started my journey in the dairy industry with something as small as moving houses and it was through that action that has led me to where I am at today. Like any journey, mine was not without hardships, but it was through these hardships that solidified my passion for the dairy industry. Upon graduating, I intend to obtain an apprenticeship working with creameries in WI to learn what they have to offer about the ins and outs of making dairy products. I wish to bring the creamery business back to my own farm. Although tradition directs the future, innovation is what gets us there.

Moving into Agriculture   4-H and FFA have been a part of my life for a very long time. I joined 4-H in second grade and eventually became a fully fledged member and president of my club when I was only in seventh grade. I was treasurer of the Brown county 4-H Federation for two years, as well as the officer at large for a year. As a 4-H dairy judge, I competed at the state fair and won the opportunity with my team to compete at the All-American Contest in Harrisburg in 2015.   I joined my local FFA Chapter as a junior high member and worked hard to become my chapter’s Sentinel, the lead for many different community improvement projects and agriculture education fairs. The most influential and impactful part of my FFA career came from the culmination of all my years of hard-work and dedication to my Supervised Agriculture Experience in Dairy Production Entrepreneurship and the receiving of my American Degree. My SAE was a

Our farm is family owned and operated with one part time employee that assists with milking Thursday through Sunday. We milk 260 cows and have around 800 total cattle on our farm. The farm has been in business since 1861, and this year marks 160 years since it was first started. We run around 1,000 acres that we own and rent. On those acres, we grow corn, soybeans, alfalfa and some small grains. All of the crops are used to feed our livestock. We raise all youngstock and finish out our own steers on the farm. There is also a 200-head finishing barn of pigs rented out to a local farmer.   This year we were able to purchase many new things with milk prices rising for a good amount of time. We added head locks to our heifer lot, which made breeding, vaccination and herd check a lot easier than it previously was. We also purchased a new TMR mixer, a newer Combine, a dump cart, and we have had time to fix many things that were falling apart around the farm. With us kids having distance learning and not a ton going on this summer, planting and harvest went extremely well.   I started helping out more when we got rid of our two full time employees in the spring of 2019. I started by assisting my dad with his daily chores and milking every other night. Daily chores consisted of breeding cows and heifers, vaccinations, feeding and bedding the calving pen, keeping up on paperwork and recording everything into the Scout program. Every now and then I helped with dehorning, herd check, DHIA testing, hoof trimming, and moving heifers and cows

around the farm.In the fall of 2019, we rehired a part-time employee, and you could tell how relieved everyone became because that summer was really hard with no extra help.   I have been involved in the dairy industry for as long as I can remember. In the summer when I didn’t have school, I would go to the farm and help out my dad, uncles, grandparents and of course play with my cousins. Both of my parents came from dairy farms and one was very involved in 4-H, FFA, and the Holstein Association, which has influenced my love for the dairy industry.   I first heard about the Minnesota Junior Holstein Association when I purchased my first two registered holsteins in 2016 from my great uncle. When I bought those two, I became a member of the State and National Association and have loved it ever since. Joining the Minnesota Junior Holstein Association has introduced me to many friends and helped me branch out into the registered holstein world.   I haven’t been involved in the Junior Holstein Association for too long, but I have managed to do what I can. My county doesn’t have a holstein club, but I am involved in the nearest one to us, the Nicollet County Holstein Club. Due to the pandemic, we haven’t been able to do much, and I missed out on last year's State Holstein Convention. I attended my first Convention the previous year and had a really good time. I am hopeful to be able to go this year and participate in the contests and meet new people. I did attend the State Holstein show this past year to help out my friend, and I was a finalist in Junior showman-

UNMATCHED DOMINANCE!

Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota,

so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 8 of the 15 contests held over the past 5 years at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 20 of the 30 contests in these 3 contests over the past 10 years. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge

programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu

Don Ellingson - Holstein Historian and Dairy Promoter With a passion for dairy promotion and a heart made for the Holstein breed, Don Ellingson was a coach, mentor, historian and an agvocate for the dairy industry. He shared his passion and love for the beautiful black and white cow with his children and grandchildren. Don’s dairy promotion efforts spanned over a lifetime of memories including a few of these highlights.

by Stephanie Hammerly

NATIONAL DAIRY BOWL CHAMPIONS

One of Don’s proudest moments was coaching the Illinois Junior Dairy Bowl teams with his wife, Gen. Many Illinois Junior Holstein members have fond memories of gathering around the table at Ellingson’s White Hill Farm in Poplar Grove spending several hours on Sunday afternoon learning more about the dairy industry, the dairy cow and Holstein history. Each Junior member, no matter their age, was met with a smile, positive encouragement and a National Junior Dairy Bowl Champions wealth of knowledge. Don and Gen opened their home and their hearts to many youth over Coached by Don and Gen Ellingson, Illinois won the their years of coaching, both the state teams and local Boone-Winnebago teams. Junior Dairy Bowl competition at the National Holstein In 1986, the Junior team from Illinois went on to be named National Champions at the Convention in 1986 held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. National Holstein Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Team members included two of Don L-R: Becky Ellingson, John Ellingson, Doug Lueking, Matt Engel, Gen and Don Ellingson AgriGraphics photo and Gen’s grandchildren, Becky and John Ellingson, as well as Doug Lueking and Matt Engel.

SHOW RING SUCCESS

Memories of Don Ellingson almost always include a show ring story. From the kind of cow to the type of show shirt, Don’s breeding and showmanship skills were admired by many. Showing was a family activity and a family tradition for the Ellingsons. In 1958, the Northern Illinois State Holstein Show was held at Mooseheart. First place was White Hill Aristocrat Bess and second place was White Hill Aristocrat Queen. The story goes, the judge didn’t look at Don and Bess as they were circling the ring. After the class, Don said to the judge, “You never looked at us.” The judge replied, “I knew you were first when I saw her walk into the ring.” And Bess went on to become Grand Champion that day. Bess was again named Grand Champion of the 1960 Northern Illinois State Holstein Show in Grayslake.

DAIRY PROMOTION AND HOLSTEIN HISTORY

White Hill Aristocrat Bess EX-93 From TV commercials to radio promotions to writing Holstein history, Don was able to share Grand Champion Northern Illinois State Holstein Show the Holstein breed with so many. Don and his Holstein cows made a few trips to Chicago for 1958 and 1960 various dairy promotion events. In 1977, two Holstein cows traveled to Chicago White Sox’s Comiskey Park for the Ralph Garr Milking Contest. A local newspaper article included the results: “Ron Luciano, crown prince of American League umpires, out-milked Chicago outfielder Ralph Garr in a milking contest during Sunday’s pre-game Farm and Garden festivities at Comiskey Park...and that’s no bull!” In 1994, famous national radio jockey, Mancow Muller was doing a promotion at a bar near Chicago. He wanted two cows for a milking contest. Ellingsons were on the Chicago call list for cow promotions since they had recently shot a cow commercial at Oprah’s studio (search on YouTube for Golden Picture Picture Board Game Ad 1992 to view the commercial). Mancow had reached out to Don through an agent and was then included in the Rock 103 promotion. Writing and recording history was also a passion of Don’s. He published Illinois Purebred Holstein History in December 2006.

A CENTURY OF SHOWING

The Ellingson family showed at and supported the Boone County Fair, Boone-Winnebago Black & White District Show and the Illinois Championship Holstein Show for many, many years. In 2019, the family was honored for exhibiting at the Boone County Fair for 100 consecutive years. At the 1957 Boone-Winnebago Black & White District Show, Don, his son Terry, and his Dad Ernie, placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the same class. Their farm sponsored the State Show Champion Bred & Owned traveling trophy and Bred & Owned class rosettes for many years.

Distinguished Breeders honored by Wisconsin Holstein Association The Wisconsin Holstein Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2020 Distinguished Holstein Breeder and Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder awards. Erik and Brenda Gilbertson, Hollandale, have been named this year’s Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders while the late Glenn and Joann Brewer of Glenn-Ann Holsteins have been named Distinguished Holstein Breeder. Award recipients will be recognized at a future WHA event.

Erik & Brenda Gilbertson - Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder

The Gildale prefix has been a familiar name among Registered Holstein breeders for more than 40 years. Erik Gilbertson and his wife Brenda are the fourth generation to operate the dairy, located right within the borders of the town of Hollandale. Erik grew up on Gildale Holsteins and Brenda also came from a Registered Holstein dairy, Cava-Lanes Holsteins in Reedsville. Today, they farm together at Gildale Holsteins with their daughters, Makenna (10), Elise (7), Naydeen (5) and Janelle (1). After graduating from the UW-Madison Farm & Industry Short Course, Erik farmed with his father, Mark, while also working off the farm at shows and sales. When Mark suffered a stroke in 2004, Erik made the decision to stay on the farm and continue the Gildale name. Erik and Brenda were married in 2009, and farmed in partnership with Mark until purchasing the farm in 2017. The herd they have built today is a result of breeding from genetics purchased from Canada in 1996 when Mark and Erik wanted to rebuild the herd following a dispersal a few years earlier. At that time, the exchange rate was in favor of the US dollar so the Gilbertsons were able to invest in Canadian genetics for an ideal price. The pair invested in high type individuals like Bridgewood Stardust Barbie, EX-93, who became a very successful member of the herd. She did well in the showring and transmitted her big, tall and wide frame with youthful udders to her offspring that still remain in the herd today. Since they started farming together in 2008, Erik and Brenda have improved their BAA by nearly two points, up from 109.6 to 111.1. The barn currently houses 18 Excellent cows, 24 Very Good cows and just seven Good Plus cows. Over the years, Erik and Mark continued to make trips to Canada to invest in new genetics. This allowed Erik to develop a breeding philosophy similar to breeders in Canada and develop an eye for animals. Two other individuals that were purchased that had an impact on the herd were Valley Lane GDR Nutmeg, EX-92, and Paradigm Formation Mint, EX-90. Nutmeg was one of the cornerstones of Erik’s junior showing career and was named Grand Champion of the District 3 Show two years in a row. Her Jasper granddaughter also did well in the showring, placing second in the 2013 Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Mint was known for her components and high scoring family members. This cow family has produced two herd favorites today - Gildale Storm Marie EX-93, and her daughter, Gildale Aftershock Maria EX-94. This breeding philosophy and eye for cattle led Erik and his friend Nik

Sutter to purchase Sunnyset Mason Trixie EX-92. Her daughter, Ms Gildale Roy Tabitha EX-94, became a cornerstone of the breeding program and was also Grand Champion of the District 3 Show twice and produced a number of high type daughters. Another cow family that the Gilbertsons are working with is that of ValeO-Skene Atwood Stars, EX-94, who was the Grand Champion of the District 6 Holstein Show in 2019 and was owned in partnership with Brandon Flannery. Stars transitioned into an even greater cow with so much potential which motivated Erik to become a better breeder and caretaker. Erik also says it was a privilege to partner with a great friend who inspired him to work even harder. They lost Stars last summer but have several promising young daughters thanks to success with IVF. A recent purchase that the Gilbertsons are excited about is Our-Favorite She Vintage-ET. This Avalanche daughter was fresh last fall and is coming along nicely. She has high genomic type that comes from a deep cow family, Our-Favorite Unlimited EX-94. Gildale Advent Primrose sold as a calf in the 2008 “Gildale and Company” sale to Second-Look Holsteins. Through their care, she was the first Gildalebred cow to achieve the score of Excellent-95. She is a descendant of WindyKnoll-View Ultimate Pala EX-94 DOM. Another consignment in the 2008 Gildale and Company sale, Ms Ava Pronto Alice from Marty Kinyon, made her new home at Gildale and established strong red lines in Erik’s breeding program. Her daughter, Gildale Aso Attractiv-Red-ET EX-93, is a favorite Red and White Holstein at Gildale and transmits well. The Gilbertsons plan to continue breeding cows that produce good components while also exemplifying good type and longevity. “Milking cows is a daily thing for me, it’s part of us and our way of life. We take pride in breeding cows and it’s our hope that we can share success with other breeders as well,” Erik says. Management also remains a very important part of developing these types of cows. In the last few years cow comfort has become one of the most important aspects of care. Over the years, the Gilbertsons have installed mattresses, more fans, aisle mats, improved neck rails, and the addition of box stalls. Grazing also gives cows the ability to exercise and get outside during the nicer parts of the year. The Gilbertsons value care of heifers, too, so in 2016 a new heifer barn was built for younger heifers and breeding age heifers. Being active in the community is important to the family in addition to farming. Erik has served as a lieutenant at the Hollandale Volunteer Fire Department for 20-plus years and is the dairy leader for the Blue Ribbon 4-H Club. The couple also hosts farm tours for the Pecatonica Elementary School and Brenda volunteers in the classroom. Brenda’s passion for her fellow farmers led her to found the MILK 5K Run/Walk to support and create awareness around mental health in rural communities. In addition to shows, other Wisconsin Holstein activities are critical to the success and involvement of both Erik and Brenda but also for their children. In 2017, Gildale was the site of the Wisconsin Holstein State Picnic. The couple is active with the Iowa County Holstein Association and Brenda serves

on the District 3 Show committee. Installing a strong work ethic in their children is something both feel strongly about and believe that farming is one of the best ways to do so. They hope to offer their children this way of life and character building skills through the connections of the dairy industry. Erik and Brenda are looking forward to getting their daughters more involved in Junior Holsteins and 4-H as well as FFA later down the road.

Glenn & Joann Brewer, Glenn-Ann Holsteins – Distinguished Holstein Breeder

Farming is more than cow families, pedigrees and production for the Brewer family of Glenn-Ann Holsteins in Albany. Farming includes sharing a connection with those in their agricultural community and in the Registered Holstein business. Glenn and Joann Brewer grew up just a few miles apart, both graduating from Albany High School in 1962. The high school sweethearts both showed at the Green County Fair, but it was Joann who showed dairy while Glenn grew up showing pigs. After high school Glenn attended UW-Platteville to run cross-country. He stayed in Grant County after graduation, teaching agriculture and becoming a loan officer. Joann got her teaching degree and taught school in that same area. After daughters Tami and Traci were born they decided to move back to their hometown and raise their kids on the farm. They purchased the farm next to where Joann grew up, starting with 40 grade cows. As years passed, Tony was born and changes were happening at the farm. An addition was added to the barn, doubling the size and Registered Holsteins started to fill the barn. As Tami got old enough to show, Glenn would buy registered calves, many times heading back to the Grant County area to find them. It was a purchase at the Green County Holstein Sale that changed Glenn-Ann forever. J-J Jonette EB Bootie was purchased in 1981 as a September calf for Tami to show. Bootie went on to be the first Excellent cow at Glenn-Ann, the first to go over 200,000 pounds milk lifetime, and was a Gold Medal Dam and Dam of Merit. While Bootie did not flush well, the next generations added many offspring to the herd. At one time half the herd traced back to Bootie. During this time, Glenn continued to make improvements to the farm for cow comfort to increase production or make things more efficient. A TMR mixer was purchased and the “old part” of the barn was remodeled with new larger stalls and cow mats. Through the years, a power feed cart and bedding chopper were added to speed up and make chores easier. All of this helped in reaching a herd average of over 30,000 pounds of milk with nearly 1300 pounds of fat and 1000 pounds of protein. Through the years, not only did the cows produce more milk, but the overall type in the herd continued to improve. One example was Glenn’s favorite cow, Glenn-Ann Jasper Shiner EX-94. She was one of seven Excellent daughters of Glenn-Ann Durham Sharla, EX-93, and a descendant of Bootie. Sharla lived to be 16 years old, producing lots of milk and many show winning daughters. Her offspring won the Produce of Dam class at the district show many times, along with runner-up at the District 6 Futurity four times. Shiner’s daughter, Glenn-Ann Gold Chip Shiraz EX-92, was crowned Grand Champion at the 2017 District 6 Show. Glenn and Joann truly appreciated their homebred animals and always enjoyed letting youth borrow heifers to show after the kids became too old to show at the county and state fairs. Occasionally, they even let a good one

get away, including a Doorman fall calf that traced back to Shiner and Sharla, and thus Bootie. Glenn-Ann Doorman Bootie, EX-94, was sold to the family that bred Bootie and went on to be nominated Junior All-American in milking form. While the majority of the cows were all homebred at Glenn-Ann, there were a few exceptions along the way. The one leaving the biggest impact was Wilcoxview BC Phinale EX-93 GMD, also with over 200,000 pounds of milk in her 18 years. All animals on the farm starting with “Ph” trace back to this family favorite. Phinale was a special young calf for Brian and Tami during their time at Wilcox Farms in Washington and made the long-distance trip to Wisconsin after one of the Wilcoxview herd sales. In 2019, Phinale had seven living generations on the farm. Phinale joined a couple of other Wilcoxview bred animals – Wilcoxview Perfec Formation, VG-87 GMD DOM, along with a daughter of AllAmerican Wilcoxview BC Cami. Glenn-Ann Miss Pepperdine VG-89, a Rudolph daughter from Perfec, became a major genetic player at the farm. Pepperdine, her daughters and granddaughters helped put the farm on the world map and garnered a lot of international visitors, AI contracts and embryo exports. Her son, Palermo, was a popular Goldwyn son at Accelerated Genetics and great-grandson, Providence (Meridian x Jeeves x Goldwyn), did well at Semex. The breeding goal at Glenn-Ann was to breed for positive production and solid type as the first criteria when selecting sires. When the kids were young and showing, a portion of the herd was bred to high type show sires which also laid the foundation for families that continue to produce VG and EX cows. At the start of the 2010s, more emphasis was placed on cows that could score well but make at least 150,000 pounds of milk by the time they finish their 6-year-old lactation. Glenn always believed that consistency in feeding and milking was key to a successful herd. Heifers needed to be well cared for and fed to have large frames so they can calve in at 23 to 26 months. Cows needed to be fertile enough to calve regularly and healthy to remain in the herd for a long time. This philosophy earned Glenn-Ann Holsteins a spot on Holstein Association USA’s Herds of Excellence list in 2016, one of only four herds honored that year. Over the past few years a decision was made on the future of the herd. The tie-stall barn and stalls were showing their age, so the possibility of a freestall shed was discussed. But with Glenn’s passing in February of 2020 and Joann continuing to fight, and then losing her own cancer battle, the decision was made to start selling the milking herd privately after the August 2020 classification. That classification day resulted in a 109.6 BAA, placing Glenn-Ann in the top 200 herds for BAA. All fall, the cows left the farm as they were sold to nearby herds in small groups. With the remaining cows and a group of heifers calving in November, it left about 30 head that were sold in an online auction the end of December. While Glenn-Ann is done shipping milk, there are still many heifers and calves running around one of the two farms. With a few of the cows sold in partnership and a few others that might calve in before getting sold, there will be Registered Holsteins calling Glenn-Ann home for years to come. The next generation, Jaxson and Kinslee, need to know what it is like growing up on a farm. The family will continue to remain active in the Registered Holstein community to build on the legacy Glenn and Joann built and share their love of the Holstein cow with others.

Iowa Holstein Association Awards Distinguished Service Award

Master Breeder Award

At a young age Tom had a strong interest for farming and the Holstein cow. He was blessed with the opportunity to work side by side with, and learn from, one of the best - his dad, Joe Simon. Tom still remembers how excited he felt at a young age when his dad began purchasing registered Holsteins. Tom took an active role in the breeding and sire selection in the family’s steady climb toward a successful herd of registered Holsteins. In 1981 the farm achieved their first homebred Excellent cow. By the end of the decade, cows from Farnear Holsteins were recognized at the state and national level. Tom strives to provide a wide variety of genetics in their current breeding program. Farnear Holsteins has received Grand Champion and Premier Breeder at the state level along with several All-Iowa and Reserve All-Iowa honors throughout the years. This past year Farnear had the privilege of breeding their first 96 point cow as well as winning Grand Champion at 2 National shows. They have bred many popular bulls into A.I. including Delta, Delta Lamda, and Altitude-Red. Today, Tom and his brother Rick are co-owners of Farnear Holsteins. Tom has extended hospitality at Farnear for many state picnics, 4-H judging workouts and college judging teams. Farnear Holsteins has also hosted many visitors to the farm during Expo week as well as local and foreign visitors throughout the years. Tom has been very active in the local, district, state and national Holstein organizations. He was President and Vice-President of the Iowa Holstein Association as well as member of the Executive and standing committees and has served as a delegate to many National Holstein Conventions. He has assisted in organizing many District 8 Holstein and Iowa Holstein Conventions. In 2014, he was part of the planning committee for the National Holstein Convention that was held in Dubuque and co-chair of the National Sale Committee. Farnear Holsteins also hosted one of the farm tours. He was on the Dairy Foundation Board and served ten years on the Prairie State Select Sires Board. He is a former 4-H leader and stills serves on the Dubuque County 4-H Dairy Committee. It was an honor for Tom to receive the Iowa Holstein Hall of Fame Award in 2017. In his community, he is involved with St. Joseph Parish, Farley. He is the chair of the Cemetery board and a past member of the Parish Council and the Faith Formation board. He will be married to his wife Shirley 40 years in June. They have four sons, Jeremy and wife Kristin and daughters, Mila and Lucy, Matt and wife Kaci and sons, Bodie and Griffin and daughter Lettie, Mark, and Josh and wife Ashley. He enjoys visiting with family and friends who also share an interest in dairy cattle and above all spending time with his family. Tom likes bowling and watching/attending Iowa and ISU football and basketball games.

Larry and his late Father, Maurice formed a partnership in 1980 milking Registered Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns. He has been a member of the National Holstein Association for 48 years. Larry officially retired from milking last fall but still has some young stock. His last Holstein classification on July 1, 2020 resulted in 4 EX, 18 VG and 8 GP with a BAA of 108.5. Several cows have been successful in the show ring at local, district and national levels. His highest classified Holstein, Lands-Brook Allen Dora EX-95-3E, was 1st Aged Cow and Champion Bred and Owned at the Midwest Fall National Show. One of his greatest accomplishments would have to be breeding and developing, LandsBrook Christina EXP-ET EX-96-4E. Christina was named Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo in 2013, 4X Reserve Grand at Expo and 6X All-American. Lands-Brook animals of both breeds have been consigned to local, state and national sales. Larry has successfully held numerous positions of leadership within county, district and state dairy associations. One of his greatest accomplishments was chairing the 2014 National Holstein Association’s Annual Convention. This involved planning meetings five years in advance, working with the City of Dubuque and the National Holstein Association Office in Vermont. The Dubuque Chamber of Commerce said that it was quite possibly the largest convention of this length to ever have been held in the city at that time. Larry has served the Iowa Holstein Association in almost every capacity including President, Vice-President, Board Member, Executive Committee, and Chairman of the Herald and Breed Improvement and Junior Advisory Committees, Ad Hoc Committees. He has been a National Convention delegate for several years and chaired the 2001 National Convention Souvenir Program Committee. He continues to hold leadership positions on the District and County Holstein Boards. He is very involved in his church, Marion Lutheran Church, and sings in his church choir, Clayton County Dairy Promotion in which he is a charter member, county DHI and has coached the Clayton County 4-H Dairy Judging teams. Larry also enjoys singing in the Luren Choir in Decorah. Larry was a recipient of the 2020 Ralph Keeling Award, the 2016 Distinguished Service Award, the 2006 Hall of Fame Award and the 1981 Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award. Many people enjoy Larry’s company as he has a wealth of Holstein cattle information, local history and dairy trivia. He livens up any conservation or road trip with his knowledge. He is a friend to everyone and seems to know people wherever he goes.

Iowa Holstein Association Awards Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award Dan & Lynn Bolin, Clarksville

Dan Bolin has always loved registered cattle. His parents, Dave and Pam Bolin, often joke that they have a mixed (herd) marriage. Dave milked a Guernsey herd, Pam brought Holsteins to their herd, and they couldn’t resist a handful of Jersey’s during a memorable farm sale. No matter the breed, from a young age Dan was enthralled with cattle genetics. He couldn’t wait to get the next Redbook. During a memorable family vacation they visited Tim Abbott in Vermont. In those days Redbooks were only mailed out and Dan knew there would be a book waiting when they returned home. Much to his delight Tim had received a fax of the Top 100 list and gave Dan the list early! Dan poured over those numbers and bulls making notes and lists on the next long stretch of road. When it was time for a pit stop the doors of their station wagon flew open and out and away flew Dan’s precious papers. Seeing Niagara Falls that trip was memorable but the disappointment of losing the new proofs has been talked about ever since. In high school, Dan participated and did well in Dairy Quiz Bowl nationally, helping to re-energize the program in Iowa. In college he also participated in Dairy Judging. In 2006, he earned his Dairy Science Degree from Iowa State University. Lynn’s story is quite the opposite, growing up in the suburbs of Minneapolis, far from the farm. She met Dan while studying at Iowa State University and her mom knew she was in love when she came home and said “I think I could be a dairy farmer”. Dan and Lynn were married in 2006 and before returning to the farm in 2011 lived overseas for a couple years. When they returned to the farm after a family health scare, the barn was full of Guernsey, Jersey, and Holstein cows. In 2015 Dan and Lynn built a new freestall barn with robotic milking just over the creek from Dan’s 130 year old family farm near Clarksville, Iowa and branded it New Day Dairy. Five years later the barn is full of almost exclusively Registered Holsteins - the Guernsey & Jersey’s not quite able to intermingle in the new barn. Today the herd of 120 cows averages 83 pounds with Rita the Robot milking an average of 2.6x/day with 4.25%F and 3.22%P. Although Dan has purchased quality Registered Holstein heifers and cows from others, Dan is most proud of the homegrown breeding he has done creating great healthy productive dairy cows. Today Dan breeds for health and wellness, calving ease, high components, and robot characteristics. Dan is quick to use the best polled and sometimes red and white bulls (especially for the kids - Amara, 10, Vance,

7, and Judah, 3). His current favorite service sires are ExtraP, Redeye-P Red, Boeing-P Red, AltaHolladay-P, MauriceP RC, Helium Red and Whynot. As for Lynn she’s learned to tell a great cow from a very poor one but that’s her registered cow knowledge limit. She most enjoys telling visitors who come to #sleepwiththecows at the GuestBarn on their farm that every Holstein has a unique pattern (and personality). Visitors also enjoy the cows variety of “hair-styles” which are often removed at fairs when they might otherwise encounter cows. Minnesota and South Dakota Herds Make High-Ranking BAA% Lists Earlier this year, Holstein Association USA released the lists of the top Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) herds for 2020 classifications. A number of herds from Minnesota and South Dakota ranked in the list of Overall Top 200 BAA Herds for 2020.   The top herd from Region Six was Raylore Farm of Hutchinson. Luke and Loren Olson recorded a BAA of 111.9 with 50 cows. Several herds from Minnesota and South Dakota made the top 200 list and respective lists for herd size. Minnesota Holstein Association would like to congratulate all of these herds for this achievement.   To see the lists with all states included and also a ranking by region, visit: http://www.holsteinusa.com/   The Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) value provides a way to compare the score of an animal (and herd average) to the average of the breed, taking into account age of the animal and stage of lactation. All animals receive an individual BAA value on your herd classification report, and herds participating in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein Classification program receive an overall BAA for the herd.

Ken Gasper named Pioneer Award Recipient LANSING, Mich. – The CentralStar Cooperative board of directors recently selected Ken Gasper of Belding, Michigan as the 2020 Pioneer Award recipient. Established in 1977, the Pioneer Award recognizes individuals who through selfless and dedicated service and leadership have provided the cooperative and its members greater prosperity.

“Ken was a visionary leader for our cooperative,” said Paul Trierweiler, CentralStar board president. “His ability to encourage the board to think outside-the-box allowed the cooperative to expand service offerings to provide useful tools to producers which ultimately helped improve farm profitability.” A member of the CentralStar board of directors from 1983 – 2013, Gasper was president from 1993 – 2004. In addition, he served on numerous CentralStar committees; as well as the AntelBio board of directors; and represented the cooperative on the Select Sires board of directors for 23 years.

As board president, Gasper led the organization through many changes including transitioning to a stock-based cooperative. At the same time the cooperative grew beyond being singularly focused on genetics and reproduction, with the addition of Dairy Herd Information (DHI) services; dairy records analysis and consulting, diagnostic testing through the creation of AntelBio, and herd management products. As a result of these improvements the cooperative’s sales revenues grew by more than $10 million in a shrinking customer base.

Michigan’s Top BAA Breeders! The Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) value provides a way to compare the score of an animal (and herd average) to the average of the breed, taking into account age of the animal and stage of lactation. All animals receive an individual BAA value on your herd classification report, and herds participating in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein Classification program receive an overall BAA for the herd.

For the purposes of this list, if a herd classified twice in a year (between 1/1/2020 and 12/31/2020) and received an official herd BAA for both classifications, only the most recent BAA was used. To appear on this lists, a herd must have at least 10 cows included in the BAA calculation. In 2020, 947 herds had a BAA value eligible for inclusion in these lists. The average number of cows included in the BAA calculation for the entire group was 68, and the average BAA% was 107.2.

The “Kisses” are making a big impact at Wargo Acres. They are commercial dream cows with modest size, but massive production. Kari and Kiss are both milking over 160 pounds a day as they get started on their second lactations. Both will be flushed this lactation. Kari and Kiss have a maternal brother at IPS, Wargo-Acres Ton of Fun, that has daughters starting to calve in with great results leaving us with the question “Who doesn’t love a great Kiss?”

ship. I was very thankful for at least one show even if it was four hours away. This year I am hopeful for a show season where I can exhibit at district and state shows.   In the summer of 2015 my grandpa introduced the idea of going to World Dairy Expo with him and a couple other guys. I ended up going and had an amazing time watching some of the best cattle in the world compete in the coliseum. My favorite thing to see at Expo is when the Grand Champion Holstein gets named, how the crowd reacts and seeing the joy on the showmans face. Expo isn’t just about watching cattle be shown, it is also a great place to meet other people that have an amazing passion for Dairy Cattle. One of my goals is to someday end up in that ring with a bred and owned animal.   I really enjoyed participating in Dairy evaluation through both 4-H and FFA. I love to learn more about selecting the best cow and the competitiveness of the competition. I am eager to be able to judge this year at local and state contests. I am lucky to have had great mentors and others around me who continue to push me to the next level. I have also participated in the Dairy Bowl at the local and State levels. I am excited to have the opportunity to do it again this year even though it may be a little bit different than in the past. My team has done very well at the local levels earning Champion in 2019 and Reserve in 2017. I love learning more about the way dairy cattle work, are built, and what they need to survive and thrive.   During the summers I attend two dairy camps. The first week of June is usually the Jackrabbit Dairy Camp in Brookings, SD. At the start of the camp, you participate in challenges and games to win money to buy your calf that you will fit and show at the end of the camp. They also show you around the campus, and we get to attend informational clinics about things inside the dairy industry. The day before the show, we got to go to a fun activity that was bowling for a couple years, and in 2019, we went to a waterpark. In 2019, I won my age group and was 3rd overall, and the year before I won my class also and was Reserve overall showman.   Three days later I also go to the dairy camp at the University of Minnesota. It also starts out the same where you try to earn as

much money as you can in order to buy a heifer. In 2019, I remember getting to the end of the auction and having almost 10,000 dollars of fake money to buy a calf because any leftover money other people had they kept giving it to me. I ended up using all of it to get the heifer I wanted. The auction is always super fun because they bring in an actual auctioneer and at the end people can show off their skills if they want to try the Betty Botter rhyme. We also attend clinics to learn more about fitting, genetics, showing and we even get to make our own ice cream and cheese. After fitting our heifers, we went to change and start the showmanship competition which last year I was 3rd overall in my division. At the end we have a banquet for awards and some funny certificates.   During the summers I help out my county's ADA by sharing dairy treats and talking with consumers about the dairy industry. With the Le Sueur County ADA we receive our crown and sashes that we wear during parades, at banks serving ice cream, and reading books at the local libraries. I have been doing this since 5th grade and have loved every second of it because of the girls I get to meet and interacting with the consumers. This is also a great learning experience and training for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition at the State Fair. Being Princess Kay has been a goal of mine ever since I saw my mom in a picture when she was a finalist. I am looking forward to being able to compete for that in a couple of years.   In the future I plan to be doing something in the dairy industry or at least within the agriculture world. After that I am not sure if I want to do something with dairy genetics, work for a dairy business or something else that may come along. I know that I for sure want to keep progressing my herd and hopefully be able to compete on a national level one day. My goal is to have a prefix that is known throughout the world such as Blondin, Jacobs, Duckett, Oakfield and more.

Obituary - Roger K Olson Roger was fond of saying, “I’m just a country boy.” It was the lens through which he saw himself his entire life. Born and raised in Lynn Township west of Hutchinson, he grew into a man who cared deeply about service to his community and its members, schools, Veterans and his church, Christ the King. Roger’s life was committed to excellence, service and honor.   As a teenager Roger participated in several school activities, 4-H and Future Farmers of America. After graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1952, he joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War and in the Alaskan Air Command. In 1957, Roger returned to Hutchinson and fulfilled his high school yearbook senior prophecy which said, “Roger Olson has settled down with Holsteins and a certain redhead on a farm near Heatwole.” He certainly did—Roger, better known as RKO, and his beloved bride Darlene put down roots south of Hutchinson where they started their family, established a dairy farm and began what would become a 34-year career at 3M. In the years that followed, the theme of Roger’s life continued to be leadership and service to the community.   Roger’s dedication to the Holstein community spanned many decades. He was actively involved in leadership roles within the Holstein Associations for McLeod County, Minnesota State and National Holstein Association. Roger received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award from the Jaycees in 1969 and was named Person of the Year in 1980 by the State Holstein Association.   Perhaps Roger’s greatest legacy to this community can be

found in his work with youth programs and Veterans Affairs through the Hutchinson American Legion Post 96. He was a champion fund raiser for organizations dedicated to supporting youth activities. Each year he worked with the Hutchinson School District to bring together Youth and Veterans by securing speakers for the Veterans Day Programs for the elementary, middle and high schools.   He was frequently described by close friends as a “behind the scenes mover and shaker,” and it was often discovered that he was the active force in leading events and initiating projects around Hutchinson. Roger truly loved this community, and he was humbled and honored to be recognized as Mr. Hutchinson in 2012.   For Roger, there was no higher calling than honoring the American Veteran, and he was a tenacious advocate for Veterans Affairs. As a member of the American Legion, he served as Post Commander, Third District Commander and Department Commander for the State of Minnesota. On the American Legion National Level, he was a delegate to several national conventions, consultant on the Internal Affairs Commission, Department Representative for Foreign Relations, Credentials and Membership, and served as Vice Chairman of the National Resolutions Committee. Roger was also a Committee Member for the McLeod County Veteran’s Park in Hutchinson where he planned and emceed the Dedication Program. There was no softer spot in his heart than for a fellow Veteran.   Roger passed away very peacefully on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Ida and his brother Earl. Roger is survived by his wife Darlene, his children Robert and Kathleen, and his brother Dennis.

MHA Corporate Sponsorship Program The Minnesota Holstein Association (MHA) was organized in 1910 for the purpose of improving and promoting the Holstein breed of dairy cattle. The MHA consists of 700 members and is open to all people interested in the dairy industry. The mission of the Minnesota Holstein Association is, "To enhance the lives and profitability of all dairy producers and enthusiasts by providing opportunities for education, marketing, recognition and socialization." As dedicated supporters of local registered Holstein dairy farmers, businesses have the opportunity to join and support the Minnesota Holstein Association through our Corporate Sponsor Program. This program has five levels of sponsorship: Grand Supreme Champion, Supreme Champion, Grand Champion and Honorable Mention. Each level includes recognition as a dedicated sponsor of the Minnesota Holstein Association. As a corporate sponsor for our association, businesses help the Minnesota Holstein Association provide opportunities for dairy producers across the state. If you and your business are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor or if you do business with a company you feel would benefit from becoming a corporate sponsor please visit the Minnesota Holstein website and print off a corporate sponsorship program agreement and flyer. Once completed the agreement and payment can be sent to the MHA office. A percentage of the sponsorship is given back to the local clubs along with their rebates in May. If you have questions or would like to know more about the program, please contact a MHA board member or the MHA office. Your assistance in helping our organization grow is greatly appreciated.
