all greetings from the Minnesota Holstein staff! This summer was certainly a busy one! June brought National Holstein Convention, State Show planning, and Field Day. We would like to thank Ash-Grove Dairy, the Gross Family, for hosting the 2021 Minnesota Holstein Association Field Day. The 2021 Minnesota Holstein State Show would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts from the Southwest Minnesota Holstein Club We would like to congratulate all of the breeders and exhibitors and thank the dedicated sponsors that made the show a success. We were excited to once again attend district shows after the break last year. Each district show was well attended and well run! Thank you to the local host clubs. The Midwest Fall National returned to Minnesota this year with great quality to the classes. It was very exciting to see the cows that breeders from the Midwest brought out to the show ring. We would like to give a special thank you to Bernice Van Hulzen and Jenn Landman for their help during the show. Make sure to check out the Midwest Holsteins issue that is found inside this publication. We are always excited to have our breeders represented in this issue, and we thank you all for advertising with us. It is a pleasure to be able to help promote some of Minnesota’s finest breeders. Soon, Amanda will be busy preparing for our 2022 membership drive, sending out corporate sponsor letters and club packets. Watch your mailbox for these items to arrive this winter. Also, please watch for details about the Golden Gopher Futurity in the December Minnesota Holstein News. By now, most of you know that Rachel will be moving on from her position as Marketing Manager following the printing of this publication. She comments, “I have enjoyed serving the membership of MHA, and I look forward to being an active member going forward.” We wish everyone a successful and safe harvest. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. Amanda can be reached at minnesotaholstein@gmail. com or by phone at (320)-259-0637. The new Marketing Manager will be available via the same email as before, mnholsteinmarketing@gmail.com. -Amanda and Rachel

From the President Hello All, I just got home from the Minnesota State Fair as I write this. It was wonderful to get back to “The Great Minnesota Get Together” and a great open class dairy show. Numbers were down slightly, but the quality was tremendous as always. I hope you all had a chance to go and catch up with fellow Holstein breeders. We have had a busy year and had to adapt to some different ways of doing things. That said, I believe we have had some great Holstein functions this year. Ash Grove Dairy hosted a fantastic Field Day despite the rain and smaller turnout. I would like to thank them for all the hard work they put in. In July, we had a wonderful State Show in Worthington. Thank you to the Southwest Holstein Club for being tremendous hosts. This publication will be the last for our Marketing Manager, Rachel Coyne. She will be moving on in her career, and we wish her the best of luck in her new endeavors. Thank You, Rachel. At this time, we are in the process of hiring a new Marketing Manager and hope to have one in place by around the first of October. I hope everyone will get the opportunity to head to World Dairy Expo this year. I, for one, cannot wait as it has been way too long, and I wish all Minnesota exhibitors the best of luck. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about our great organization, feel free to reach out to me at 320-360-5188 or shoot me an e-mail at tracyschaefer@hotmail.com. Sincerely, Tracy Schaefer

2021 Field Day Recap The 2021 Minnesota Holstein Association Field Day was held June 26, 2021, at Ash Grove Dairy in Lake Benton, Minnesota. Ash Grove Dairy is owned by Randy and Jennifer Gross. The day kicked off with barns opening at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Classification Contest, rather than the traditional judging contest. Cows at Ash Grove Dairy were scored earlier that week, allowing participants to test their classifying knowledge compared to a real classifier. A grilled cheese lunch was provided, and a short presentation was given. Although it was a rainy day, the turnout was great, and the Gross family hosted a wonderful event for the Minnesota Holstein Association. Thank you!

Mat-Ar-Dor Holsteins The Timmer Family Matt, Polly, Jacob (16) & Aiden (10) Timmer own and operate Mat-Ar-Dor Holsteins, named for Matt, and his parents, Arnie & Doris Timmer, in Ellsworth, Minnesota. Arnie and Doris Timmer began farming in 1982 with crops, some dairy, and swine. The farm continued to operate that way until 1998 when Matt graduated, and the swine were sold. Matt then started milking on his own on a rented farm a few miles down the road. He leased 40 cows, rented the facilities, and the land. In 2001, the Timmer’s added on at the home farm, and Matt gave up renting on the other site. At the time, Matt and his parents milked 85 cows in a 70/30 partnership. In 2005, they expanded again to build a freestall and double eight parlor. They then milked 125 cows with a 50/50 partnership. In 2016, Matt’s parents retired and the partnership was dissolved. Matt began milking again on his own with 43 cows on the home farm. Today the herd consists of 135 cows in the same double eight parlor. A remodel was also completed to update freestalls and add a lean-to and bedded pack for show cows. Along with the 135 cows, the Timmer family raises all youngstock, including 30 baby calves, 90 open heifers, and 35 bred heifers. All feed is purchased, and the only land owned by the Timmer’s is the 10 acres that the farm sits on. The Mat-Ar-Dor prefix was created in 2012 when Matt decided to start registering his cows. Prior to that, the herd was all grade. While looking through bull books and picking out bulls to use on their herd, Matt liked to see how pretty the dams and offspring of bulls looked, their records, and how Registered Holsteins were working in other people’s herds. He then purchased a few registered animals and when they didn’t turn out as he had hoped, he decided to go for it himself.

Mat-Ar-Dor Solomon Kaley VG-89 6

“It was fun to me to start registering the animals. I figured since the first few didn’t turn out, I would just register all of mine and some of them should turn out,” said Matt. He continued, “Looking up the heritage of what we were trying to do and putting the matings together was fun. It was a challenge to see if I could make cows like I admired in magazines.” Two cows stood out to Matt as cows that started the itch for him. Mat-Ar-Dor Vent CutB394-Red EX-92 was the cow that started him in registering and showing. She was 4th 4-Year-Old at the Minnesota State Fair and has numerous offspring on the farm. Two of her offspring sold on the Timmer’s 2021 tag sale, a granddaughter and great granddaughter. Mat-ArDor Lheros Kory EX-94 3E was another staple cow that got them started. Kory will turn 13 years old in October and has been a show winner herself, as well as produced some exciting offspring. Since beginning to register cows, Matt’s breeding philosophy has been to breed for high type, and high rear udders, and avoid high pins and poor thurl placement. Matt also watches components now more than ever before. Bulls currently in the tank at Mat-Ar-Dor are Warrior, Jordy, Moovin, Analyst, and Unstopabull for red bulls and Showtime, King Doc, Sidekick, Denver, and Chief for blacks. Matt stated, “We’ve taken the Red and White road a bit more lately. When my grandpa milked in the 1980’s and 90’s, he had a completely Red and White herd, which was really before it’s time. I think our interest in the reds stems from his herd.” He continued, “Red and Whites hold their value and are marketable for the future. I am excited to see where the Red and White breed goes in the next five years.” Today the Mat-Ar-Dor herd is about 75% homebred after rebuilding in the last few years. The 25% that are not homebred were purchased after studying the pedigrees. Matt explained, “I like generations of very good or excellent cows behind an animal.” Every once in a while, Matt will purchase an animal with a unique pedigree, like a sire stack that allows him to build something different using the bulls he has today. “We can do some cool stuff with a unique pedi-

gree. Social media usually brings the information I need right to my phone to make the right breeding decisions for our herd,” remarked Matt. 2021 was an exciting year for the Timmer family in the show ring. Mat-Ar-Dor Holsteins was named Premier Breeder at the 2021 Minnesota Holstein State Show and both Premier Breeder & Exhibitor of the 2021 District IV Holstein Show. Among the cows that contributed to these honors were Mat-Ar-Dor Awesome Rosy-Red, the Golden Gopher Type Futurity Winner, Mat-Ar-Dor Diamondback Darla-Red VG-88, Mat-Ar-Dor Solomon Kaley VG-89, Nominated Junior All-American in 2020, and Mat-Ar-Dor Solomon Stella VG-88, who was second as a winter calf a few years back. Another contributor is Mat-Ar-Dor Solomon Annabel VG-87. She is about to go dry as a 2-Year-Old and has an Awesome daughter that the Timmer’s are excited about. From a homebred cow family, Annabel goes back to a VG88 Brazzle, then an EX-91 2E Acme, then an EX-90 Sanchez, who was Matt’s first excellent cow. One of Matt’s favorites on the farm is A-L-H Artist Danni-ET, who scored VG-87 as a Fall Yearling in Milk. Danni was named Grand Champion of the 2021 District IV Holstein Show, was Junior AllMinnesota and Honorable Mention All-Minnesota showing as a Summer Junior 2-Year-Old at the 2021 state shows, and was All-Minnesota Fall Calf in 2020. “We are excited to see what Danni turns out to be. She has a Denver calf that was born in June that we look forward to showing next year,” remarked Matt. In 2021, the Timmer family hosted the “Striving For Banners” Tag Sale. Using an online sales platform, the Timmer’s were able to utilize photography, videography, and an online catalog to offer 18 lots to prospective buyers. In addition to the 18 cataloged lots, any animal on the farm had a price. An additional eight animals were sold off the farm. Hosting a sale was always something that was on Matt’s mind, but he didn’t know if he could ever accomplish it. “We wanted to have the sale in 2020, but the pandemic happened and we decided to do the sale in 2020,” said Matt. He continued, “A couple months after deciding to not hold the 2020 sale, we decided how we wanted to do the 2021 sale, what we wanted to accomplish, and what to sell. We had an extra eight months or so to determine how we wanted the sale to look and that was beneficial.” Matt wanted to offer what he felt was 20 of their best animals, whether it was show animals, deep cow families, or a combination of both.

JUNE 2021

They went through their herd and found a few show heifers in each class, as well as a few young cows that they felt were their best show prospects. Regarding selling their best, Matt commented, “If I sell a good one and it beats us at a show, it is still a win for me.” The sale averaged $3,186.67 on the 15 cataloged lots that sold. Many of the animals that did not sell ended up in the Timmer’s 2021 show string and contributed to their success. “The sale went better than we expected it to. I didn’t want to get my hopes too high but we were pleasantly surprised with the outcome,” stated Matt. Plans for another sale are already being discussed. Off the farm, Matt’s wife, Polly, works at a nearby school. Matt served on the Minnesota Holstein Association Board of Directors for many years and was the 2021 Minnesota State Show Host Club Chair. As for the future of Mat-Ar-Dor Holsteins, Matt’s two sons, Jacob & Aiden, will have a place on the farm if they would like it. “We aren’t sure what the future holds, but I would love to be able to expand and have them come back to the farm, whether that be with more milking cows, more showing, or something extra,” said Matt. For now, Matt would like to keep building deeper pedigrees and could see doubling the herd within the next five years. “If there is ever an end for us, I would love to have a herd full of deep pedigreed, good producing cows,” remarked Matt. Many 10 to 13 year-old cows currently call Mat-ArDor home, as Matt enjoys keeping them around. “We have 34 excellent cows as of now. It was never really a goal of mine to breed and develop all of these excellent cows, but now that we have I want to see how many excellent cows we can produce,” stated Matt. He also wants to continue growing their marketing program of their cows and heifers. “Seeing the smiles on the faces of our kids and the kids that purchased from us and took their animals all out is what it is all about. We want to give back to the next generation. Being an operation that milks cows is great, but we want to diversify and sustain the farm for our next generation,” commented Matt.

2021 DALE MACKENTHUN RISING STAR AWARD Shelby Swanson of Hutchinson, MN, is the recipient of named Reserve Senior Champion of the 2021 Minnesota Junior

the 2021 Dale Mackenthin Rising Star Award. Shelby is the daughter of David and Kari Swanson and owns Three Sisters Dairy along with her older sisters Sierra and McKenzie. Shelby has been exhibiting at the state show for five years and has learned many valuable lessons along the way. Her greatest lesson learned has been that “hard work always pays off. Showing takes dedication, determination, and a lot of time, but it always pays off in the end.” Shelby’s favorite memory in the show ring is from the 2020 Minnesota Junior Holstein State Show. Shelby and her heifer, Jump4Joy, were in the junior showmanship class at the end of the show day. “She was my dance partner, and we were choreographed perfectly,” said Shelby. The duo achieved 1st place in that showmanship class, an accomplishment that she is incredibly proud of. In her application, Shelby acknowledged her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, sisters, and cousins, who have all helped her get to where she is today. This award was presented to Shelby just before she was

UNMATCHED DOMINANCE!

Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota,

so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 8 of the 15 contests held over the past 5 years at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 20 of the 30 contests in these 3 contests over the past 10 years. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge

programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Endless Opportunities Scholarships Last year Dairy Science awarded nearly $100,000 to our incoming and current majors. Award amounts ranged from $1,500 to $5,000. Applying for scholarships is made easy through a Common Scholarship Application that makes you eligible for university, college and departmental scholarships. Additionally, one third of fulltime freshmen received federal financial aid last year in the form of grants, loans and work study. You can contact scholarships@cals.wisc.edu with any questions.

Badger Dairy Club a World Dairy Expo

Student Organizations

Hands-On Experiences

Badger Dairy Club has over 80 members who all share a passion for the dairy industry. Joining a student organization such as BDC is a great way for you make a large state university feel like a small college because you have an instant peer group on campus. BDC creates opportunities for members to engage in activities and experiences within the college, community, and the ever-changing dairy industry. Highlights of the club’s activities include an integral role in managing and working at World Dairy Expo, hosting the Badger Invitational Sale, volunteering at the Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Bowl and FFA Dairy Judging Contests, and club trips.

Our major requires an internship which allows you to gain hands-on experiences. Whether it is working in animal health, dairy nutrition, farm management, A.I., or sales and marketing you learn while gaining valuable work experience. A one-of-a-kind opportunity for our students is the Dairy Nutrition Experience course sponsored by Purina. This provides students with a mentored, hands-on dairy management experience, networking opportunities with producers and industry professionals and increased awareness of career options within the field of dairy nutrition. And finally, we have cows on campus! The Dairy Cattle Instruction and Research Center is located within one block of dairy classroom buildings, providing access to cows during all lab sessions.

Learn to Lead. Learn to Succeed.

Competitive Excellence Dairy Judging

Dairy Challenge UW-Madison is committed to its students receiving a “Dairy Challenge” experience. In fact, within the curriculum we have the Nutrition Experience, Dairy Herd Management Practicum and Dairy Challenge courses where students are mentored on how to analyze a commercial farm and present their observations and management recommendations, honing skills that translate directly to this competition and their future careers. Our students participate competitively at the Midwest and National North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge competitions. At the 2021 Virtual National Contest, UW was one of ten teams earning recognition. We feel the ability of our students to excel in this competitive format speaks to the quality of their education. UW Dairy Science majors graduate with a sophisticated knowledge of the science of dairying, and they learn to communicate their expertise.

UW-Madison’s dairy judging program has a tradition of success that continues today. At the National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest UW has won the contest 9 times since 1985. Since 1980 we have been in the top 5 placing teams in all but 4 contests. Our coaches are highly regarded for their “cow ability” and talent to teach students about functional type and presenting winning oral reasons. The judging team normally numbers about 15 students with each of them guaranteed a contest to compete in. In fact, a majority of team members will participate in three or four contests over their collegiate judging career. The dairy judging team competes in the fall and we send teams to the Pennsylvania All-American (PA), North American (KY), Fort Worth Stock Show (TX) and World Dairy Expo (WI) contests.

2021 Iowa Holstein Association Picnic Several Holstein enthusiasts enjoyed the day at New Day Dairy for the 2021 Iowa Holstein Association Picnic. Thank you to the Dan & Lynn Bolin and family for hosting this year’s picnic! New Day Dairy is owned and operated by Dan & Lynn Bolin along with their family. Rita the robot (the first AMS Galaxy in Iowa) has milked their 120 cows since 2015 in a new naturally vented freestall barn with a GuestBarn overlooking it. Guests from across the country come to #sleepwiththecows and experience the grandeur of the Holstein cow. Their exclusively Holstein herd milks 3.0x/day with 4.25%F and 3.05%P. They raise all their own replacements and grow most of their crops on 200+ acres. Although Dan has purchased quality Registered Holstein heifers & cows from others, he is most proud of the homegrown breeding he has done creating great healthy productive dairy cows. Today Dan breeds for health & wellness, calving ease, high components, and robot characteristics. Dan is quick to use the best polled and sometimes red and white bulls (especially for the kids).

Her dam, Marilie Gentleman Karmina, is an “Excellent-94” three time All-American in milking form with 1344F, a registered Ayrshire that milks like a Holstein. Her sire is the time-honored Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette, a plus proven, leading sire of All-Americans for many years.

Think of those beautiful, fashionable F1 calves that can be directly entered in the Red and White Herd Book with a $10 Certificate of Identification (CID) from the Holstein Association. They can then be entered in many of the Red and White Open Shows in several states. And they’ll also be eligible for most Junior Dairy Shows throughout the United States.

Consider for your herd a round of embryos from Karuba by Altitude, Unstoppable, Jordy, Warrior, or Diamondback! Think of the benefit in hybrid vigor for health and reproduction.

Regardless of your breed of choice or your country of origin, Karuba is one to look at while you’re at World Dairy Expo.

35th Annual WHA All-Breeds Futurity

August 14, 2021 • Wisconsin State Fair Park, West Allis • Judge: Brian Kelroy

The 35th Annual WHA All-Breeds Futurity, or “Cow Prom” as many state fair attendees call it, was held Saturday, August 14 in West Allis, Wis. Judge Brian Kelroy of Deforest, Wis., judged and placed seven outstanding 3-year-old cows. A total of $5,483 in purse money and special awards was split amongst the owners of the seven entries that competed at the show. Coming out on top was Dreamfix Splash of Sun-ET exhibited by Landon and Mylie Wendorf, Kylie Nickels, and Christian Sachse, Ixonia. They took home a $1,500 prize sponsored by Compeer Financial, as well as Best Bred & Owned sponsored by Wisconsin Holstein Association and Best Udder of Show sponsored by CentralStar Cooperative. Second place went to Ryan-Vu Doorman Maiti-ET exhibited by Ryan-Vu Holsteins of Fond du Lac. They were awarded $750 sponsored by International Protein Sires. Third place was awarded to Milgene Jezabels Dream-Red exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farm of Hustisford. They received $500 sponsored by Agropur. The top placing junior owned entry was How-Law Defender Raindrop exhibited by Dana Johnson of Tomah. She was presented an award sponsored by Angela Davis Brown, Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys, and a $50 prize sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Top Milk Production and Top Fat and Protein Production was awarded to Milgene Defiant Triday exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farms. They were awarded two $25 cash prizes sponsored by Brian Greenman, Rural Mural Insurance Agent. While the show is focused on the cows, their exhibitors were also looking their finest to compete for Best Dressed Awards. Best Dressed Junior went to Dana Johnson, Tomah, sponsored by the Barron County Junior Holstein Association. Ty Hildebrandt of Hustisford won Best Dressed Adult Male sponsored by Robert and Karyn Schauf. Yvonne Preder of Scenic-Edge Holsteins sponsored the Best Dressed Adult Female award, which was given to Amy Ryan of Fond du Lac. The evening’s program was led by the Mistresses of Ceremonies, Jill Makovec and Nicole Breunig. They introduced the dignitaries in attendance, cows, and award sponsors. Tim Baumgartner was in attendance as a representative for Compeer Financial, and representing International Protein Sires was Ron Sersland, owner. Royalty from across Wisconsin attended the event as well, including Zoe Ertel, Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess; Emily Stumpf, Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Attendant, Julia Nunes, Alice in Dairyland; and Cayley Vande Berg, Wisconsin Fairest of the Fair. The Wisconsin Holstein Association All-Breeds Futurity would not be possible without the generous donations from our major sponsors, Compeer Financial, International Protein Sires, and Agropur. We would also like to thank all of the committee members, volunteers, and additional sponsors that helped make this event possible. We hope we will see everyone at the 2022 WHA All-Breeds Futurity Show at next year’s Wisconsin State Fair. 32 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2021

OBITUARY Sara Marie Schmitt, age 28 passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester. Sara was born on July 3, 1993, in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, to Steven and Lisa Sontag and was raised on her family’s farm in Shafer, Minnesota. This is where she developed a love for agriculture and dairy cattle in particular. Sara attended South Dakota State University and received a degree in Dairy Science in 2015. On June 29, 2019, Sara married Michael Schmitt in Rice, Minnesota before moving to Rochester, Minnesota in 2020. Sara and Michael met on the 2009 National 4-H Dairy Conference trip but spent the better part of a decade simply as friends before pursuing a relationship in 2016. They shared a love of God, cows and travel that shaped the life they built together.

Sara was known for her caring spirit and love for others. She valued personal conversations and genuinely listened to learn more about everyone she met. She was a giver and was always looking for ways to help others. In her free time, Sara baked pies and tasty desserts, tended to flowers and the garden, and walked with her Corgi puppy, Rip. She enjoyed exploring new places, visiting state and national parks, hiking, kayaking and biking. Sara is survived by her husband, Michael, parents, Steven and Lisa, siblings, Jill (Josh) Bednar and Mark Sontag, grandparents, Richard and Shirley Sontag and Milton Bahnemann, father and mother-in-law, Mark and Natalie Schmitt, brothers and sisters-in-law, Jonathon, Libby, Katie and Austin Schmitt, and nieces and nephews. Sara is preceded in death by her brother, Robert Sontag, and grandmother, Mary Ann Bahnemann.

MHA Corporate Sponsorship Program The Minnesota Holstein Association (MHA) was organized in 1910 for the purpose of improving and promoting the Holstein breed of dairy cattle. The MHA consists of 700 members and is open to all people interested in the dairy industry. The mission of the Minnesota Holstein Association is, "To enhance the lives and profitability of all dairy producers and enthusiasts by providing opportunities for education, marketing, recognition and socialization." As dedicated supporters of local registered Holstein dairy farmers, businesses have the opportunity to join and support the Minnesota Holstein Association through our Corporate Sponsor Program. This program has five levels of sponsorship: Grand Supreme Champion, Supreme Champion, Grand Champion and Honorable Mention. Each level includes recognition as a dedicated sponsor of the Minnesota Holstein Association. As a corporate sponsor for our association, businesses help the Minnesota Holstein Association provide opportunities for dairy producers across the state. If you and your business are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor or if you do business with a company you feel would benefit from becoming a corporate sponsor please visit the Minnesota Holstein website and print off a corporate sponsorship program agreement and flyer. Once completed the agreement and payment can be sent to the MHA office. A percentage of the sponsorship is given back to the local clubs along with their rebates in May. If you have questions or would like to know more about the program, please contact a MHA board member or the MHA office. Your assistance in helping our organization grow is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!
