FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Reconnecting at Northern Green Cassie Larson

MNLA Executive Director

Northern Green has always been built on the power of in-person, the connections that happen while being face-to-face with other green industry professionals.

MNLA and MTGF are excited to bring this event back in person on January 11–13, 2022 in the only venue in our area large enough to host such a gathering: the Minneapolis Convention Center. It’s time to re-connect with industry colleagues. It’s time to do business and learn together. And it’s time to party. The cancelation of our in-person event last year allowed us to launch a new online format, and a new platform for engaging with each other even when we’re apart. But it can never replace an in-person event, when the unscheduled moments can be as impactful as the scheduled ones. The energy of a live event just can’t be duplicated. We’re excited to bring you some new features this year, and to bring back the elements of Northern Green that make it so valuable to this industry. A few notable new things at the event this year include: • Rate Lock — There is now a “snow insurance” option for companies that plow snow and are nervous about pre-registering. You can lock in the pre-registration rate for only $20 down, which is also applied toward your final purchase. • Group Discount — Groups of more than 10 attendees can get a 10% discount (with education passes, or the “Day” passes). Read more about this and the

Rate Lock at www.northerngreen.org/registration. • There is an educational focus on health and wellness — including the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Jermaine Davis who will present on “Recharge and Stress Less: Beating Burnout Before it Brutally Beats You.” In addition, several other seminars will focus on mental health, employee safety, first aid, and stress relief. Take some time to plot out how these sessions can benefit you and your employees. • A new Trade Show Casino event will take place on Thursday afternoon with playing tables on the trade show floor. • Hardscapes LIVE! will make its debut in the Sandbox area on the trade show floor and will feature hands-on demonstrations and education to improve the efficiency of landscape/hardscape project sites. Many other favorite features such as the Interactive Track and CEO & MGMT Track will also be returning, in addition to the Trivia Trail and MN State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Inspection Demos. For a full lineup of what’s in store, please visit www.northerngreen.org for details. We look forward to re-connecting in January, seeing each other face-to-face, enjoying a beverage and good company, and learning from new friends and old.

BELGARD IS A MANUFACTURER OF hardscapes and building material products in Minnesota and the surrounding areas. With a wide selection of items in their inventory, Belgard supplies their products through the wholesale distribution channel. “We have a wide product range that will turn any backyard into a backyard oasis,” said Belgard Sales Representative Kevin Russell.

Location: Shakopee and Minnetonka Number of employees in peak season: 50 Areas Served: Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska Member Category: Manufacturer Website: www.belgard.com

12

MNLA.BIZ december 21

The company became Belgard in 2015 when Oldcastle (Belgard’s parent company) acquired Anchor

Block Company, a local block manufacturer. The sales team services Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. All of the products are manufactured in a plant located in Shakopee, Minnesota. They are part of a larger network of companies under CRH, a global building materials group, employing over 77,100 people at more than 3,110 locations in 30 countries.

Q. What is something that sets your company apart? A. With the abundance of block manufacturers in the local market, we set ourselves apart with our quality product, breadth of product range, and top-notch customer service. When you look through our product catalog you will find an array of products that appeal to every homeowner looking to do a hardscape product. From clean, modern, contemporary products to the classic look of a tumbled, antique product. We also are on the leading edge of bringing products to this market such as our Tandem ®Wall Systems and our new Artforms™ product. Plus, we are the only manufacturer in Minnesota that offers Face-Mix technology. Q. Can you share an example of your business practices that you are proud of? A. I would say the last two years have been

some of our most impressive as a company. Being able to hit our numbers in 2020 and 2021 with everything going on with COVIDrelated issues we have dealt with has been great. Q. Can you give me an example of how your company demonstrates professionalism, ethical operations, and good employee relations? A. Having a fun company culture is very important to our local Belgard team. It is extremely imperative for everyone to get along and have each other’s back. Having a good relationship with the sales team and the production team has been something we take pride in. Q. And how does this impact customer service? A. One of the best things about working for this team has been the capability to resolve issues in a timely manner. We stand behind our product 100% and if we did something that we feel was our mistake we will rectify the issues as fast as possible to take care of our customers. Q. How do you innovate? A. Being a paver and block manufacturer, it is not always easy to produce new products. We are always trying to come up with ways to think outside the box. Our new Artforms™ product line and our Tandem Wall System® are great examples of the way Belgard innovates in this market.

Belgard® Hardscapes, www.belgard.com

Belgard® Hardscapes, www.belgard.com

Q. How would you describe your company and its products or services? A. We strive to offer the best product backed by the best customer service possible. The nice thing about us is we operate and make decisions like we are run as a small business, but we have the backing of a large corporation. This gives us more resources, training, and capabilities not found elsewhere in this market. We have several “sister companies” in our division that we work with closely if we ever need products, for example. We strive to produce products that the supplier, the contractor, and the homeowner will all be happy with.

Q. How does your team approach public relations? A. We try to be as active in our local landscape community as possible, which includes sponsoring MNLA events and showing our support in any way possible. Q. What are the ways that MNLA has helped your company? A. I would say the one thing that sticks out the most is from the spring of 2020. All the work MNLA did to work with the local governing officials to deem the local landscape/ hardscape community “essentials workers” so they could get back to work was incredibly important. We all know that was a strange time and MNLA stepped up to help everyone so we could continue to work. Q. How is your company involved with MNLA? A. We strive to be a part of and support MNLA as much as possible. We know how important the organization is for the local landscape community and do our best to show our support from sponsoring the local events and helping in any way possible. I am personally on the Communications and Technology committee where we meet every quarter. We are active participants in Northern Green and as many MNLA events as possible.

THERE’S NO “I” IN TEAM: USING CULTURE, HR STRATEGY,

AND PEOPLE PRACTICES TO STRENGTHEN YOUR BUSINESS THURSDAY, JAN. 13 | Kristen Ireland and Erin Mies, People Spark Consulting Businesses typically approach HR in one of two ways. Many look at human resources responsibilities as compliance officers, a necessary evil, a haveto-do…. These businesses are looking for the safe routes, the ones that keep them out of legal trouble. They are not truly leveraging the power of their employees: their team. They are playing NOT to lose. Other businesses know that their success depends on their team. They know that whether customers return depends on the interactions with their employees. They work with their employees to drive business success, they are an employer of choice and they are able to retain their high-performing employees, even in a tight labor market. These are the businesses that are taking aim for their target. Kristen Ireland They are playing to WIN. Playing to WIN doesn’t have to be hard or take a lot of resources. It’s not about trendy perks or game rooms. It’s having employees who know what is expected of them, managers that provide direction, clarity, and coaching, and having goals and rewards aligned to drive business results – and they do exactly that. In our interactive, 2-part session, we will share a variety of simple and practical tools business owners and managers can put to work in organizations of any size, and discuss the important role they play in making things stick. In doing this, leaders develop the culture and reputation that not only attracts great talent, but that keeps it, too. • Session 1 - Culture, Compliance Basics, and Recruiting & Interviewing • Session 2 - Hiring/Onboarding, Managing Performance, Engaging & Retaining Your Employees

Collect people What do you do in your spare time when you’re not working? What is your favorite hobby or activity? My husband Steve always responds with, “I collect people,” and he means it! And for him, it is a wonderful outlook. For me, though, making those connections doesn’t come as easily. For some of us, we may not be strong in this area, but after living with someone where socializing is required to survive, I have learned how to improve myself in such “people-facing” situations. You can, too. It takes practice, but the more you do it, the better you become at it. Learn from a Woo In Gallup’s CliftonStrengths® Assessment, a person’s talents can help describe them as a “Woo”. These are people who love the challenge of meeting new people and winning them over. They derive satisfaction from breaking the ice and making a connection with another person. Author, Marcus Buckingham calls this a Connector in his StandOut assessment. Connectors look at people and automatically ask themselves who they can connect them with to make everyone more effective as well as what idea can I give them to help them do something they didn’t imagine themselves. As CliftonStrengths® explains, we all have certain natural talents. They come to us easily. However, this does not necessarily mean those habits are our strengths (yet). We have to work on, focus on, and practice our talents to turn them into a strength. And who knows, you may have a talent or talents you aren’t aware of yet. This talent is the source from which you get your power, trust, fear, intelligence, etc. It goes back to one of your strengths. Connecting people is what motivates you to act. This is where you get energy to move forward, to set goals, and to follow through. It is also how we reach out and connect to find the right candidate to fit our open positions. Our companies, departments, and teams all need Woos and Connectors. It’s how we reach out to others and build relationships. None of us knows when we might need the help and assistance of someone outside our close family and friends zone. The search for right candidates This hit home to many of us when the pandemic began, and everything was chaos. With so much disruption and unknowns as to

whether or not our companies could survive, we were all reaching out and connecting to others (not necessarily close to us) just to figure out options and gain insight. I, personally, have never been on the phone so much with people I’m not close to. It may have been out of my comfort zone, but it was a great and empowering experience. My connections and relationship-building ability improved. The same goes for finding candidates. Are you truly exploring all your options to fill that next job opening? If not, start with the personal. It’s about reaching out to your connections and relationships. If you rely solely on an online recruiting platform, you might be disappointed. The feedback we’ve gotten from employers and employees is that there may be candidates applying, but many aren’t the right fit, and there’s a high number of incidences of ghosting. All of this wastes valuable time. Connecting is not an event Making connections is a continuous “reach out” to others. Strengthen relationships today, even though there may not an ulterior motive. Plus, when you reach out to someone with an ulterior motive in mind, it’s usually a little obvious. People don’t appreciate that. What they do appreciate are honest connections, a simple “thought of you today”. From this relationship, one can go back to a person when you have a particular need… like searching for a candidate introduction. The key phrase here, for us not-so-strong connectors is “take the time”. I often wonder how so-and-so is doing and sure would like to

find out, but because of my busy schedule, I tend to forget the physical act of reaching out by phone, email, text, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. Connecting is strategic Create a reason to connect and revisit with someone. My husband is genuinely concerned about making a connection. That takes thought and a connecting of the dots between an idea or conversation and someone who might benefit. It is a part of strategic thinking as well as wanting to be helpful. When meeting people, put on your thinking cap and always ask yourself how you can help this person or connect them to someone else. It is not always about what you need from that person. More often than not, it is about helping the other person. If you’re trying to figure out how you could implement a strategy around this, consider this. A strategic partner of ours just sent us a short summary of what their company is up to as well as a templated email we can copy and paste so we can easily send their job opening (links included) to anyone within our web of relationships who might be a good fit. How easy for us to just copy, paste and send when someone comes to mind! Connecting happens outside of work time Connecting isn’t a 9–5 job. Even when you’re not at work, you should still be connecting. We recently spoke with an individual who is desperately trying to find a job. However, she is doing nothing as far as reaching out to existing relationships or building a network of connections. She is simply putting in her

time (i.e., her workday) and applying through online recruiting platforms. She considers her time outside of work to be her family/ private time even though she has been to church, shopped in her local community, volunteered, and attended sports activities — all excellent connecting opportunities! I recently reached out to a Facebook friend whose son works at a large company and might be interested in meeting another friend’s daughter (who happens to be looking for a career move). What a complicated web but it makes sense if you are willing to make the first move, break the ice, and reach out with an introduction. If I hadn’t had a trusting, respected relationship with multiple people here, it would never have crossed my mind to connect them. It is up to each of us to create awareness of who we are and what we are looking for by connecting and building relationships before they are needed. Reach out and align with others. Create that web of connections that will serve you well down the road. AUTHOR, TERRI WILCOX, is co-owner and a Business Advisor with The Resultants. HEMLOCK SCALE

longate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa) is an invasive pest introduced into the United States from Asia. Elongate hemlock scale is reported to develop and reproduce on 43 species of native and exotic conifers. Primary hosts include hemlocks (Tsuga sp.), firs (Abies sp.), and spruce (Picea sp.), of which several species are native to the United States. Spruce and fir are reported to be more susceptible than hemlock, but the elongate hemlock scale has not become established in areas where these trees predominate. To date, it has not been found in Minnesota forests or nurseries. However, infested Fraser fir trees and wreaths have been intercepted the past several years. Scales are very small insects that secrete a waxy coating for defense and feed on the sap from plants. They have piercing/sucking mouthparts they insert into the host plant for feeding. Once they begin feeding, most species of scales remain stationary on the plant. In northern regions, the elongate hemlock scale completes one generation per year; however, two generations per year occur in southern regions. This insect typically overwinters as an egg or a female carrying eggs. The life cycle consists of immobile adults and mobile immatures called “crawlers.” Crawlers are the only part of the life cycle that are capable of dispersing and establishing new populations, and this usually occurs via birds or the wind. The life stages broadly overlap, so crawlers may be found throughout spring and summer. Males and females look quite different because the males have wings.

The elongate hemlock scale female, which would normally be seen if an infestation is present, is dark brown, longer than wide, and typically found on the underside of the needles. However, these insects are very hard to detect. Signs of elongate hemlock scale include a yellow banding on the top of infested needles which can lead to premature needle drop. The crowns of infested trees may have a thin appearance. If this insect becomes established, it could pose a threat to our native conifer species such as spruces and firs. In the United States, this pest is established in the Atlantic States and sometimes occurs alongside two other exotic pests — a circular hemlock scale (Nuculaspis tsugae) and the hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae). The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the University of Minnesota are currently researching if elongate hemlock scale could become established in Minnesota. Once established, scale insects are difficult to control as they are protected beneath the scale covering most of their life. The use of chemical insecticides is possible; however, application

timing is critical because only certain life stages are susceptible. TREES

It’s quite often I hear comments such as “what is

the biggest tree I can get” or “I will be dead before the tree is large enough to create an impact.” When deciding on a new tree to plant, my advice is always the same; if you want a big tree fast, plant a small one.

It is common for a large tree to undergo a prolonged period of transplant shock or slow growth after being planted. This period of stagnancy can typically last several years. On the other hand, smaller trees planted at the same time will experience a shorter period

of reduced vigor and in fact, may surpass the larger tree in size before the larger tree has fully recovered its normal growth rate. The reason for this difference involves the balance between the above and below ground portions of the tree. When a tree is dug for transplanting, as much as 98 percent of its root system is left behind. When transplanted, often less than 5 percent of the absorbing roots are moved with the tree. While that’s true for both large and small trees, larger trees lose a much greater mass and lateral spread of roots than smaller trees. Because roots of large and small trees grow at the same rate (roughly 18 inches a year) it takes the large tree several years longer to regain the size of its original root system. Thus, large trees often experience a longer period of slow top growth after replanting. This period of slow growth should be expected since the tree is being supported by such a limited root system. During this time, the cut-off root system is unable to supply the necessary amount of nutrients and water needed for normal growth. This extended period of reduced vigor often results in worry for the survival of the tree. During this time the tree is susceptible to drought and insect attack. This is one reason adequate watering and other maintenance is critical after replanting. A 4-inch diameter tree and a 10-inch diameter tree planted at the same time will be of equal size after 13 years. This is because the total amount of the root system needed for replacement is much more for the 10-inch tree. Even though a similar percentage of roots are removed, the 4-inch tree will have

re-established the original root system at the end of five years. The 10-inch tree, however, will take 13 years to replace the roots lost at transplanting. Because the small tree has had several years of vigorous growth while the larger tree was under stress, the smaller tree actually overtakes the large tree in growth by the time the larger tree has restored its root-shoot balance. And shelling out the big bucks for a large specimen is sometimes not worth the money. Younger trees are easier to plant, less expensive and studies show that they adjust better to new growing conditions, re-establish themselves, and recover from transplanting much more quickly and easily than bigger trees. You may not see your baby tree turn into one of those incredible kings of the forest that we all imagine, but a young tree is like a child, fun to watch mature and develop. Pretty soon it will be a fixture in your landscape before you realize it. ➽ FAITH APPELQUIST is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, an ISA Municipal Specialist MN, and an ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist®. SECTION 179 What You Need to Know About

and Bonus Depreciation for Equipment

Bill Nielsen RDO Equipment Co.

SECTION 179

 SECTION 179 AND BONUS DEPRECIATION are popular tax incentives used when buying equipment and machine technology solutions. Especially as year-end approaches, it is common for companies to look at late-season purchases to apply Section 179 and bonus depreciation. Do you have all the information you need to know about Section 179 and bonus depreciation for equipment and technology? Most of the program parameters have stayed consistent since 2018. However, 2021 does have one update and one especially unique challenge that every equipment owner needs to know and consider. Take a look at 10 frequently asked questions about Section 179 and bonus depreciation. 1. What Is Section 179?

Section 179 is designed to encourage companies to invest in themselves and grow their operations with equipment and technology purchases. The incentive allows the purchaser to deduct the full cost of the equipment in the year of purchase. 2. Is There a Spending Cap and Total Deduction Limit?

In 2021, both the spending cap and total deduction limit increased. The Section 179 total spending cap is phased out between $2.62 million and $3.67 million. Comparatively, in 2020 the phase out was between $2.59 million and $3.63 million. The deduction limit is raised to $1.05 million, up from $1.04 million last year. Once a company reaches the spending cap, the deductible amount is reduced dollar for dollar by the amount above the spending cap resulting in zero eligible 179 expense when $3.67 million of equipment is purchased. 3. What Is Bonus Depreciation?

Bonus depreciation, also known as the additional first-year depreciation deduc36

MNLA.BIZ december 21

tion, has often been used hand-in-hand with Section 179, as it is also a valuable tax incentive. The two can be combined for maximum tax benefit. Both new and used equipment are eligible for bonus depreciation. 4. Is Bonus Depreciation Expected to Change?

In 2018, bonus depreciation was changed from 50 percent to 100 percent. It is expected to stay as-is until 2023, when it will begin phasing down, first to 80 percent, then to 60, 40, and 20 in subsequent years. 5. What Types of Purchases Qualify for Section 179?

Tangible, movable items are eligible for Section 179 deduction. This includes equipment, technology and software, and some business-use vehicles. However, not every potential purchase gets the green light. Common assets like additional farmland or buildings do not qualify for Section 179 deduction. 6. Are New and Used Equipment Eligible for Section 179 and Bonus Depreciation?

Both new and used equipment are eligible for Section 179 and bonus depreciation. One thing that many are pleased to learn is that technology upgrades like GPS, machine control, and software are also eligible, both new and used. 7. Does the Term “Like-Kind Exchange” Apply to Section 179?

Like-Kind Exchange is no longer relevant or applicable to Section 179. Part of 2018 tax reform included a repeal of Like-Kind Exchange for equipment. 8. What’s the Date Range to Apply Section 179 in 2021?

This is one of the important things to know about Section 179, particularly for this year. To apply the deduction for tax year 2021, equipment must be financed or purchased and in service by midnight on December 31. In years past, this was not much of an issue. However, with equipment lead times at historic highs

this year, the idea of buying something off the lot at the local equipment dealership is no longer likely. Ensure that any machine purchased with the intent of applying Section 179 or bonus depreciation can meet the requirement to be put in service by the end of the year. 9. Can This Year’s Section 179 Deduction Be Held Until Future Years?

A Section 179 deduction can be held until the following year and there may be reasons to consider doing so. For example, a business in a lower tax bracket now but looking to grow might want to hold off on deducting all its equipment purchases by not taking Section 179 on the acquisition. Instead, the deduction could be spread out over time through depreciation deductions. 10. How Do I Know if Section 179 and Bonus Depreciation Are Right for My Business?

Taking advantage of even the most valuable incentives might not be the right decision for every company, every year. If a machine, new technology solution, or software is not needed – and especially if a company cannot afford it – the deductions and money-saving opportunities do not justify the investment. Every company’s financial situation is different. All business owners should consult their accountant or trusted tax advisor before deciding to take advantage of incentives. If it is decided that a purchase is the right choice, farmers, contractors, and other equipment buyers can look to a trusted dealership for help. You’ll find the right equipment or machine technology solution to fit needs, whether it is new or used, a lease option, or even rentto-purchase agreement. And because equipment and technology should always be viewed as long-term investment, consider dealers that also offer parts and service support. ➽ BILL NIELSEn is Director of Tax for RDO Equipment Co.’s parent company, R.D. Introduction The Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association (MNLA) is actively engaged in policy formulation related to all aspects of the planning, design, installation, maintenance, and management of the urban landscape. MNLA represents the Minnesota Green Industry which includes nursery and greenhouse growers, garden centers, landscape irrigation practitioners, industry suppliers, and a wide range of landscape professionals. MNLA member companies collectively employ more than 42,000 individuals and have a multi-billion-dollar annual impact on Minnesota’s economy. MNLA advocates for

workable water conservation and efficiency efforts to preserve Minnesota’s precious water resources. Constant and consistent outreach, education, and advocacy are crucial to the effort to promote the efficient use of water in the outdoor living environment. MNLA is available to serve policymakers as a contributing resource to those formulating science-based responses, strategies, policies, and actions to manage water use and promote water-efficient practices in Minnesota. Background The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) currently outlines five stag-

es of drought in Minnesota in its Statewide Drought Plan and corresponding guidance to water purveyors in response to triggers of drought severity. The drought stages range from Stage 1 (Non-Drought) to Stage 5 (Emergency). The State Drought Plan does not prescribe water reduction strategies; rather, it leaves this responsibility to municipal authorities and local water purveyors. To balance water efficiency efforts with the needs of existing plant infrastructure and landscapes, MNLA’s leadership and staff assembled industry-specific and situationally appropriate advice for outdoor water use reduction and improved water use efficiency. december 21 MNLA.BIZ

Objectives MNLA seeks to collaborate with legislative, regulatory, and municipal authorities to promote means and methods to improve and assure efficient uses of water while preserving existing landscapes and planted infrastructure. Promotion of high-efficiency landscape and irrigation products and industry best practices among practitioners, consumers and regulators is key to achieving workable successes in the efficient use of outdoor water resources. This document

focuses on advice for workable actions to reduce water use in the planted landscape in response to periodic drought conditions.

MNLA makes available industry-specific guidance (herein) for use and promulgation by agencies, local governments, water purveyors, educators, Green Industry professionals, and other interested stakeholders. Intended as a component of broad-based water reduction efforts in drought conditions, this

document and the corresponding two-approach matrix above should be consulted when crafting and implementing water reduction ordinances for each stage of the State Drought Plan, including prioritization of location-types and plant material types. State Drought Plan This document cites the Drought Condition Levels from U.S Drought Monitor, ranging from Abnormally Dry (D0) to Exception Drought (D5). The MN State Drought Plan, as released by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, uses these metrics to declare Drought Phases, Stage 1 (nondrought)) through 5 (Emergency) which trigger actions by the state and other water-related stakeholders. New Plant Establishment Restrictions During drought Stage 4 (Restriction) and Stage 5 (Emergency), MNLA recommends

against the establishment of new plant materials and new or continuation of landscape projects as new plants and landscapes are vulnerable to drought-like environmental conditions and underwatering. Additionally, seeding of cover crops (on bare soils) should be avoided. Mulch and other protective measures during drought During drought conditions, MNLA recommends mulching of bare soil surfaces. Mulch reduces water loss due to evaporation. A 1½" –2" layer of mulch or compost is recommended. Apply mulch to annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, and vegetable gardens. The Value of the Planted Landscape • Gardening is America’s top outdoor leisure activity and is enjoyed for the exercise and the psychological benefits associated with gardening.
