WEDDING PLANNING CHECKLIST
shelbySCphoto
5
12-18 Months Before O Start a wedding folder or binder. Begin leafing through wedding, lifestyle, fashion, gardening, design and food magazines for inspiration. Browse Pinterest and Instagram for ideas. O Work out your budget. Determine how much you have to spend, based on your families’ contributions and your own. O Pick your wedding party. As soon as you’re engaged, people will start wondering who’s in the wedding party. O Start the guest list. Make a head count database to use throughout your planning process, with columns for contact info, RSVPs, gifts, and any other relevant information. (Hint: Want to keep costs low? It may be brutal, but the best way to do it is to reduce your guest list.)
O Hire a planner, if desired. A planner will have relationships and insights about vendors. Even if you are only going to use them for day-of coordination services, it’s wise to hire them at the beginning of the planning process. O Reserve your date and venues. Decide whether to have separate locations for the ceremony and the reception, factoring in travel time between the two places. O Book your officiant. O Research photographers, bands, florists and caterers. Keep their contact information in your binder or spreadsheet. O Throw an engagement party, if you wish. But remember that your invitees should be on your wedding guest list as well.
6
8-12 Months Before O Hire the photographer and the videographer. No need to talk specifics yet--be sure that the people you hire are open to doing the shots that you want. O Book the entertainment. Attend gigs of potential acts to see how they perform in front of audiences, then reserve your favorite. O Meet caterers. If your wedding venue doesn’t offer its own catering service, look for one now and hire the service. O Purchase a dress. You’ll need to schedule time for at least three fittings. Veil shopping can be postponed for another two to three months. O Reserve a block of hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. Pick three hotels at different price points close to the reception venue. It’s great to try to get one of the room rates to sit right around $100 if possible. O Start a gift registry with a minimum of three retailers. O Launch a wedding website. Create your personal page. Note the date of the wedding, travel information and accommodations. Then send the link to invitees. O Visit your local men’s formalwear stores and choose the groom’s and groomsmen’s attire. O Send save-the-date cards.
7
6-7 Months Before O Select and purchase invitations. Hire a calligrapher, if desired. Addressing cards is time consuming, so you need to budget accordingly. O Start planning a honeymoon. Make sure that your passports are up to date and schedule doctors appointments for any shots you may need. O Shop for bridesmaids’ dresses. Allow at least six months for the dresses to be ordered and sized. O Send your guest list to the host of your shower. O Meet with the officiant. Map out the ceremony and confirm that you have all the official documents for the wedding (these vary by county and religion). O Reserve structural and electrical necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs if you need them, lighting components, and so on. O Book a florist. Florists can serve multiple clients on one day, which is why you can wait a little longer to engage one. Plus, at this point, you’ll be firm on what your wedding color palette is. O Arrange transportation. Consider limos, minibuses, trolleys and town cars. But know that low-to-the-ground limos can make entries and exits challenging if you’re wearing a fitted gown. O Start thinking about shuttle service for your out-of-town guests. Is this a service you would like to provide? If so, start talking with the hotels you have contacted and see if they have any special relationships or deals set up for these services. O Start composing a day-of timeline. Draw up a schedule of the event and slot in each component (the cake-cutting, the first dance, etc.).
8
4-5 Months Before O Book the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner venues. Negotiate the cost and the menu.
O If you’re planning to host a day-after brunch for guests, reserve that venue.
O Check on the wedding invitations. Ask the stationer for samples of the finished invitations and revise them to suit your needs.
O Select and order the cake. Some bakers require a long lead time. Attend several tastings before committing to any baker. (Because, why not?)
O Purchase wedding shoes and start dress fittings. Bring the shoes along to your first fitting so the tailor can choose the appropriate length for your gown.
O Schedule hair and makeup artists. Make a few appointments with local experts to try them out. Snap a photo at each so you can compare results.
O Choose your music. Are there any must-have songs? What about songs NOT to play? Listing out these items can give the DJ great direction in your music preferences. Also start thinking about: first dance, father/daughter dance, mother/ son dance, anniversary dance, and bridal party dance songs.
9
3 Months Before O Finalize the menu and flowers. Since food and flowers are affected by season, you’ll want to wait until now to see what will be available. O If desired, order favors. Some safe bets: monogrammed cookies or a treat that represents your city or region. If you’re planning to have welcome baskets for outof-town guests, plan those now. O Make a list of the people giving toasts. Which loved ones would you like to have speak at the reception? Ask them now--so they can start preparing! O Finalize the readings. Determine what you would like to have read at the ceremony and whom you wish to do the readings. O Purchase your undergarments. And schedule your second fitting. O Finalize the order of the ceremony and the reception. O If you want, order menu cards and programs. O Purchase the rings. This will give you time for resizing and engraving. O Send your event schedule to the vendors. Giving them a first draft now will allow ample time for tweaks and feedback.
10
2 Months Before O Touch base again with all the vendors. Make sure any questions on your first draft proposals have been answered.
O Set up your timeline meetings with your wedding planner.
O Meet with the photographer. Discuss specific shots, and walk through your wedding venues to note spots that appeal to you.
O Review the playlist with the band or DJ. Though you probably won’t be able to dictate every single song played, you should come prepared with a wish list.
O Send out the invitations. (Insider Tip: Mail invitations six to eight weeks before the ceremony, setting the RSVP cutoff at three weeks after the postmark date).
O Submit a newspaper wedding announcement. If you’re planning to include a photograph, check the publication’s website. Some have strict rules about how the photo should look.
O Enjoy a bachelorette, bachelor, or stag party. Arranging a night out with your friends generally falls to the maid of honor or best man.
O Schedule spa treatments for the week of the wedding, including massage, facials and mani/pedi.
11
1 Month Before O Enter RSVPs into your guest list database. Phone people who have not yet responded. O Get your marriage license. The process can take up to six days, but it’s good to give yourself some leeway. If you are changing your name, order several copies. O Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations. O Visit the tailor for (with luck!) your last dress fitting. For peace of mind, you may want to schedule a fitting the week of your wedding. If you try on the dress and it fits perfectly, you can always cancel the appointment. O Stock the bar. Now that you have a firm head count, you can order accordingly. O Confirm times for hair and makeup and all vendors. O E-mail and print directions for drivers of transport vehicles. This gives the chauffeurs ample time to navigate a route. O Assign seating. Draw out table shapes on a layout of the room to help plan place settings. Write the names of female guests on pink sticky notes and the names of male guests on blue sticky notes so you can move people about without resketching the entire setting. O Purchase bridesmaids’ gifts. You’ll present them at the rehearsal dinner. O If necessary, write vows. This process can take longer that you might think! O If needed, get your hair cut and colored.
12
2 Weeks Before O Give final head count to the caterer and baker. Confirm all set-up instructions and menu items. Also finalize payment at this time. O If you’re having a receiving line, determine the order you want everyone to stand in (i.e. parents, grandparents, important family members, etc.). O Prepare your wedding toasts or thanks to friends and family. (Hint: Traditionally the best man, maid of honor and father of the bride give toasts at the reception. If you’re concerned about length, consider setting a time limit for speeches, or have more of them at the rehearsal dinner. )
O Put together the reception seating plan if you’re having a seated reception meal. (Hint: Leave two blank seats for every 50 guests. This will be for unexpected guests that happen to show up.)
O Designate someone to collect the wedding gifts and cash brought to the reception. Coordinate with this person where they will bring the gifts after the wedding. (Hint: This person could also take care of the guest book, since they will be in contact with many guests.)
O Groom: Get your final haircut. (Hint: Don’t get your haircut the day of the wedding—you want to give your fresh ‘do time to settle in.)
O Fill out escort cards or give typed names to the calligrapher if you’re using one. O Plan any additional night-before activities with friends and/or attendants and proper accommodation for out-of-town bridal party members. O Designate who (i.e. reception site manager, coordinator, close friend) will meet, greet and handle each vendor on the wedding day. (Hint: Usually your wedding coordinator does this.)
13
Week of Wedding O Delegate small wedding-day tasks. Choose someone to bustle your dress, someone to carry your things, someone to be in charge of gifts (especially the enveloped sort), someone to hand out tips, and someone to be the point person for each vendor. O Send a timeline to the bridal party. Include every member’s contact information, along with the point people you’ve asked to deal with the vendors if problems arise. O Pick up your dress or make arrangements for a delivery. O Groom(s): Pick up your tux and try it on in the store before you leave. Don’t wait until the day-of to do this! O Call your reception site manager and make sure your vendors all have access to the site when they need it. Confirm final payment at this time. O Distribute final wedding-day directions, schedule, and contact list to all parents, attendants and vendors. O Confirm delivery locations, times, final payments and arrangement count with florist. O Call transportation providers for a day-of schedule and addresses for pickups on the wedding day. Confirm final payment at this time as well. O Confirm location, date, final payment and time with photographer and/or videographer.
14
O Confirm date, location, time, playlist and final payment with all musicians for the entire day (i.e. live music and DJ for ceremony, cocktail hour and reception). O Make a day-of schedule for you and your groom. Make sure to include time for hair, makeup, and transportation to and from your beauty appointments and your photo session. O Put final payments and cash tips for vendors in marked envelopes and give to your wedding planner or a designated friend or family member to distribute on the wedding day. O Put together an overnight bag for your wedding night and designate someone to deliver it to the hotel for you. O Leave a copy of your honeymoon itinerary with someone in case of emergency. O Give seating chart to caterer, venue manager, host or wedding coordinator. O Determine any wedding-day assignments for members of the wedding party, and make lists/info sheets as needed. O Check in one last time with the photographer. Supply him or her with a list of moments you want captured on film. O Attend spa treatments, mani/pedi appointments. (Hint: You might want to get a stressrelieving massage, too.)
O Break in your shoes. O Pack for your honeymoon.
15
Day Before the Wedding O Arrange for someone to drop off the guest book and pen and other important pieces at the reception site. (Hint: This can also be done at rehearsal, if it is in the same location.) O Rehearse the ceremony with officiant and wedding party and other important people. O Pull together your wedding gown, veil, shoes, and stockings and put them all in one safe place. O Put together a day-of emergency kit. You never know what may happen and it never hurts to be prepared. Give this to a trustworthy guest, such as the mother of the bride, or the maid of honor. O Confirm with those people you expect to give/lead toasts at the reception. O Designate someone to take and freeze the top tier of the wedding cake to be eaten at your first anniversary celebration. (Hint: Save some cocktail napkins, programs, place cards and other mementos too! )
O If you are going on a honeymoon right away, ask a bridesmaid to pick up your belongings at the hotel after you have left. O Have fun and relax at your rehearsal dinner. O If your wedding is in the morning, set your alarm. (Hint: Arrange for a backup just in case!) O Relax, take a bath, and get some much-needed sleep (8-plus hours--if you can!!)
16
Day of the Wedding O Most Important: Relax, smile, and enjoy the day! O Eat breakfast and other small meals throughout the day. Make sure to drink plenty of water and use the restroom before the ceremony. O Enjoy your hair and makeup time with friends and family. O Take a moment to thank your parents and tell them you love them. O Set aside a private moment together before or after the ceremony to exchange gifts and a sweet congratulatory kiss (or two). It always makes a great photo opportunity to catch this special moment when you see each other for the first time, either before or after the ceremony.
After the Wedding O Enjoy your new life as newlyweds! O Preserve your bridal bouquet, wedding dress and other wedding mementos, if you are choosing to. (Hint: This should be done within one week of the wedding. This prevents stains from setting, and keeps flowers as fresh-looking as possible. If you are going on your honeymoon right away, you may want to give this task to a close friend or family member.)
O Mail gifts to your parents to thank them for their help and support (if you didn’t give them out at the rehearsal dinner). O Put together an online photo album of wedding photos from friends. (Hint: These will most likely be the first photos available, since professional proofs can take weeks.)
O Send thank-you notes for your gifts within eight weeks of your wedding day.

Next up, start to plan your ceremony. Receptions get a lot of attention, but it’s the ceremony that’s truly the most important part of your day. Think about who you want to officiate your wedding. Whether it’s a religious leader, a friend or family member, or a professional officiant, your choice will set the tone for the ceremony—and sometimes dictate the venue. You may also meet with your officiant before the wedding for pre-marital counseling. Whether you’re having a religious or secular ceremony, counseling beforehand can help ensure you and your partner are on the same page when it comes to those big life topics, and have the tools to discuss issues going forward During this time, begin to think about what type of wedding you want: large or intimate, formal or casual, local or destination, and so forth. Start browsing magazines and blogs, set up a Pinterest board, and attend wedding fairs for inspiration. The Wedding Fair™ is Minnesota’s premier wedding fair, bringing together the best wedding vendors in the Twin Cities. Taste cake and catering samples, talk with wedding pros and watch a runway fashion show—this is a one-stop shop for everything wedding. It occurs three times a year— January, March and October. The Wedding Fair™ is the ultimate wedding planning experience.

Questions to ask your wedding planner: » What is your fee? Is that all-inclusive or are there additional costs? » Are there package options? » Are you available on our preferred wedding date? » Will you be onsite the day of my wedding? » Will you have a team? » Will you book multiple weddings on the same day? » How often do we typically meet during the planning process? » Will you attend vendor meetings with me? » Have you planned a wedding at our venue before? Or a similar style venue? » Are there any aspects of wedding planning that you don’t get involved with? » Do you have references? » And ask yourself: Do we like this person? You will be spending a lot of time with your wedding planner—make sure you like their personality.
22
Tips for creating the perfect registry: » Register at a minimum of three different stores. This way if your guests are from out of town, they will most likely have a store nearby. You can also create online registries.
» Be careful not to register for seasonal items. If you are registering nine months ahead of time, they may not have these items when your guests go to purchase them for you.
» Break registering into multiple days. Trying to get it done all in one day will become overwhelming. Think bedrooms and bathrooms one day, tackle the kitchen department another day.
» If you’ve already built your home together, think of some good ideas for an alternative gift registry. Try a honeymoon fund or donations to your favorite charity.
» Register for gifts in all price points. This way your guests can choose a gift they know you’ll love at a price they can afford.
» Look for a store that has some perks. Do you get a percentage off registry items after the wedding (usually between 10-15%)? This incentive is often found with the larger retailers.

CEREMONY + RECEPTION VENUES HOTELS REHEARSAL DINNERS OUTDOOR BARNS CRUISE BOATS

CEREMONY + RECEPTION VENUES The stage is set. The night is beautiful. As you and your new spouse walk into the room, a smile beams across your face. Hand in hand, you stroll past all your guests and see that every detail is perfectly in place. As your happiness bubbles over, you quickly realize none of this would have been possible without choosing this amazing venue. Selecting your ceremony and reception venues will be the biggest challenge of the wedding planning process. Take your time to find the venue that will not only make for breathtaking pictures, but also will set the tone for all of your friends and family. Overwhelmingly, when your guests reflect back on your wedding, they will picture your reception. You will want to find the perfect venue to express your personalities and make you and your guests feel as comfortable.
86
Lauren B aker Photography
How to determine the type of reception you want: » Do you want the ceremony and reception to be in the same place? » Based on the size of the guest list, what size ceremony/reception site do you need? » Do you have a strong preference towards outdoor/indoor ceremony? » Do you want an elegant reception or more casual? » Do you prefer a Friday night, Saturday afternoon or evening wedding? » Do you want a cocktail hour in a different location/room for dinner? » Do you want appetizers/dessert or a full meal at your reception?
good to know Your reception will be responsible for roughly 35-50% of the cost of the entire wedding. This will include your facility rental fees, catering and bar service.
» Do you want a live band/DJ at your reception/ceremony? (You will need adequate space and electricity) » Do you want alcohol at your reception? » Do you want seating for everyone or scattered cocktail tables?
shelbySCphoto
87
Questions to ask when selecting your venue: » What amenities does the site offer? (Changing rooms, bathrooms, dance floor, lighting, entertainment equipment, wheelchair access, picturesque areas, onsite stocked bar, kitchen facilities, coat rooms, etc.)
» Is catering available? May we use our own caterer, baker, etc. or must we use a vendor provided by the venue?
88
Nicole A shley Photography
» What is included and what are the fees involved with the venue rental? Have them give you an itemized list. » Are there any special restrictions? Restriction to access of rooms, décor, alcohol, music level, timeline, smoking, animals, or flames? If having anything unique, discuss this with the venue during this time.
» How many people will comfortably fit in each room?
» Can any décor be removed from the venue?
» Is there any décor included in the venue rental?
» Are candles allowed? And what is the candle policy? (Completely enclosed flame, etc.)
Things that should be included are the following: » Facility rental fee
» Cost of setup and take down
» Cost of catering
» Ceremony fee (if having onsite)
(at least minimums, final decisions will be made later)
» Staffing fees
» Cake cutting fees
» Taxes for all services and rentals
» Floral fees
» Minimum rental fee
(if using an onsite vendor)
» Linen and service ware fees (if using an on-site vendor)
» Beverage fees (this will be a decision dependent on your bar service needs)
» Bartending fee (usually per bartender)
» Overtime fees » Security fees » Permit fees » Parking/valet fees » Any other services specific to the venue

CATERING, DESSERT + BEVERAGES From cocktails to appetizers to dinner to dessert, plan a menu that will satisfy and inspire. Think about what kind of wedding you want, and translate that into your catering and bar service. A more formal affair calls passed appetizers and champagne followed by a plated dinner served in courses. A more casual event might call for buffet or family-style dining. Think about what kind of wedding you want, and translate that into your catering and bar service. A more formal affair calls passed appetizers and champagne followed by a plated dinner served in courses. A more casual wedding might call for buffet or family-style dining. But in today’s weddings, truly anything goes. Make your own rules, and choose the things you love the most. A raw bar paired with champagne for cocktail hour, followed by a decadent mac n’ cheese for an entrée—or a filet mignon entrée followed by a hot dog cart for late night snacks? Why not. The sky’s the limit when it comes to planning a menu that’s distinctly you.

Whatever you do, don’t forget dessert. Wedding cakes have always been a highlight of weddings, but it’s also a growing trend to serve other dessert options. Naked cakes, doughnuts, dessert bars and mini pies are giving a fresh new perspective to this age-old custom. Figuring out a fun way to finish off the dinner portion of your night can be overwhelming with so many sweet and delicious options. There is no such thing as your “average wedding cake” these days. Cakes can have an array of fillings, flavors, designs and toppers. From ribbons to fresh flowers, the appearance of your wedding cake can go in endless fun directions. If the traditional wedding cake doesn’t strike your fancy, consider some of the more trendy buffet ideas. Buffets can be a bit more cost effective, but only if you’re willing to do the research. Some items that make for great buffets are macarons, cake pops, mini pies, candy, popcorn, French pastries or cupcakes. Having a mix of these items can be an inviting and eye-catching display. Cost for your cake will typically be quoted per piece and can range anywhere from $1.50 upwards of $10 depending on the bakery and the complexity of the design. Selecting multiple flavors and fillings will also increase the price. Another thing to
remember with a traditional wedding cake is that many venues will have a cake cutting fee—this will range from $1-4 per guest. Sometimes venues will give you a break on this cost if you use the in-house baker, or one from their preferred vendor list.
tipping guide All tipping can be done at the end of the night. Give this task to a trusted friend or your wedding coordinator. » Bartenders: 10% of the total bill, to split between bartenders. » Catering staff: 15-20% (if NOT included in your event order) » Dessert delivery: $20-30 depending on the time, distance and punctuality.

PHOTOGRAPHY + VIDEOGRAPHY Looking back on your wedding day after the magic has taken place, you flip through your wedding albums and relive your amazing day over and over again. Your day is going to fly by and when you need to recall your evening, you’ll turn to your wedding album and photos. Photography is not where you should be cutting the budget. Make sure that you have the best photographer you can afford—this is the best way to ensure your memories will be captured perfectly. The vows, the toasts, your first dance together—these are some of the most important moments at your wedding. Being able to watch them again is something you will treasure. These special moments will be captured by your photographer, but to see them in live motion is an essential part of preserving your wedding-day memories. With wedding videography, you can watch your perfect day unfold before your eyes (and from your guest’s perspective).
128
Nicole A shley Photography
Couples are realizing more and more how critical it is to have a videographer on their wedding day. Not having one to capture your day will likely be your biggest regret if you decide to pass on this vendor. When selecting a photographer and videographer, one of the most important things to consider is their personality. Does their temperament complement yours? Are they more laid back and calm or do they take charge and command the situation? They will be with you for most of your wedding day and being posed by someone that you are not comfortable with will inevitably end with awkward wedding photos. Then of course, there’s the photo booth. While no substitution for your photographer, photo booths add to a fun environment for your guests. Not only does it provide entertainment, allowing guests to snuggle up in front of the lens snapping goofy photos, but it also gives them a take-home favor. What’s more, you’ll have a book of their silly photos to look back on and help remember the day.
good to know
Photography and videography will be responsible for roughly 15-20% of your budget. This will include the photo/ videographer’s hours on-site, engagement photos, wedding photos and footage, and tip to the photo/videographer (and their assistants if applicable).
tipping guide » Photographer: $150-250 » Photographer Assistant: $50-100 » Videographer: $150-250

Questions to ask when selecting your photographer and videographer: » What’s your favorite shooting style? Formal? Relaxed and creative? Photojournalistic? Candid? » May we see your portfolio or albums of your work?
» How many weddings do you typically shoot in a year? » What types of packages are available? Can they be customized?
» Were all the photos in these albums taken by the same photographer?
» How many other events will you be capturing that weekend? (This is so
» How many of these were similar to the size and style of our wedding?
you are aware if you are the only event or not. Although, most photographers have no problem shooting multiple events in a weekend.)
» Are you the person that we will be working with personally on our day? If not, can we meet the person who will be? Do you bring an assistant or another photographer with you on the wedding day? » Can we give you a shot list to work from? (This ensures you will be able to get
» What kind of equipment will you bring? Do you have backup equipment available? (Asking this question will also give you a good idea of how much space they will need. This can be an important piece of information to know when they will be shooting the ceremony.)
the shots that are important to you.)
Questions to ask yourself after the meeting: » Did I bond with this person? Can I see myself spending the whole day with them and enjoying myself? » Do I like their work as a wedding photographer/videographer? How is the lighting? Do they frame their work in a way that is appealing to me?

FASHION Picture your amazing wedding dress—what do you see? A haute couture gown with elegant embroidery, a breezy bohemian dress, a classic tulle ballgown, or a glamorous gown dripping in crystals? The options are endless for today’s brides. Identify some of your favorite styles as a starting point, but keep an open mind when you arrive to the bridal salon. Try on a little bit of everything to determine what you truly love. Measurements will be taken after you’ve made your final decision on the gown. Have the gown fitted to your current size, even if you are planning to lose weight. It will take several months to construct your gown once your order has been placed. After that time, the salon will call you when it arrives.
140
Nicole A shley Photography
Finally, you’re ready for your first fitting, which usually occurs nine to ten weeks before your wedding. However, let the salon know if you need the gown in advance, such as for a formal portrait sitting. At the first fitting, it’s very important to bring your accessories and all undergarments so that you can get an idea for how the entire ensemble comes together. Wearing your shoes to the gown fittings will ensure accuracy in measuring to your height, while also giving you a chance to break in your shoes a bit before the ceremony. The average cost of a wedding dress in Minnesota is $1,500, but can range upwards of $5,500. Alterations are made between the first and second fittings, so when you go back to try on the gown, the fit will be very close to the final result—minor changes may need to be made while you wait or before the final fitting. The cost of alterations can add a few hundred dollars to the total cost of the dress, depending on exactly what is needed.
good to know
Wedding attire, including hair and makeup, will require roughly 10% of your budget.

ballgown a-line trumpet mermaid sheath goddess 142
Silhouette Styles BALLGOWN — For the princess in you! Fitted at the bodice and a waistline that leads to a full skirt. Flattering on hourglass and slender body types. A-LINE — One of the most common shapes. Fitted at the bodice and angles out to the ground (resembles the outline of an A). It’s the most universal silhouette because it tends to look great on every body type.
TRUMPET — Hugs the hips and then flows out in an A-line around mid-thigh. It tastefully accentuates a woman’s shape without being confining.
MERMAID — Fits closely to the body to the knees, then flares out to the hem. This style looks good on women with more of a straight shape.
SHEATH — Usually semi-fitted from top to bottom with a straight skirt and no waist. Can be very flattering on most shapes.
GODDESS — A new shape that seamstresses use to describe any shape that flows freely from the bust line. Most of the time, this dress has an empire waist so the dress can flow freely. It also complements most body shapes.
Neckline Styles STRAPLESS — Clean line across the chest. Simple neckline that works great on small busts. SWEETHEART — The most common neckline for strapless dresses. Dips in the center with rounded edges like the top of a heart. Looks great on both small and larger bust lines. V-NECK — Very common on dresses with sleeves or halter tops. It can be very dramatic and low-cut, or higher to accentuate the bust line. Looks great on small and large busts, depending on coverage. SCOOP — A very basic U-shaped neckline. Completely rounded from shoulder-to-shoulder as if the dress were smiling. This looks great on both small and large bust lines. BOAT NECK OR BATEAU — Similar to a scoop neck, this rounded neckline is cut straight from shoulder-to-shoulder with a slight dip in the middle. This neckline looks great on small bust lines. OFF-THE-SHOULDER — Sits below the shoulders and accentuates the shoulders and collar bone. Great for large bust lines. HALTER — Straps that wrap around the back of neck. Great for broad shoulders.

Types of Men’s Formalwear
black tie
BLACK TIE — This is a dinner suit and can be accessorized however you like. Popular accessories include braces and shirt studs. The suit type is any suit that has a satin lapel finish. The color can be whatever you prefer, and Instagram and Facebook are loaded with images. The satin color can contrast or match the suit, but most dinner suits have black satin lapels.
FORMAL — Refers to any suit with a matching trouser. The lapel finish matches the suit fabric and buttons. Accessories like vests, bowties, colored shoes, and ties bars are popular with this suiting standard.
formal
WHITE TIE — Strictly Tails coat, with a white marsala vest, and matching white bowtie. Optional wing tip shirt, but must be a dinner shirt, optional marsala finish also. Generally worn with black patent leather shoes. This dress standard is rarely worn but the most formal. Think, White House wedding, or Buckingham Palace dinner.
white tie 144
*These dress standards will help you select a suit but remember to think about where you are getting married, what you want it to match or blend with. As a general guide, the suits will provide base for your photos and a stylist or photographer will understand how to use the suits to maximize the look for your venue, flowers, and individual looks.
Tie Options STANDARD NECKTIES — A standard, traditional or regular necktie measure 3.25- to 3.5-inches wide and about 57-inches long. This is your classic wedding look. SLIM AND SKINNY NECKTIES — For a more modern look, consider ties 3-inches wide or slimmer. A skinny tie is 2-inches wide and a trendy look. A slim tie is 2.5-inches wide and becoming the norm for millennial weddings. Keep proportions in mind. On more full-figured men, these slim sizes can look disproportionate. Alternatively, a 3-inch wide narrow tie is a great in-between width any groomsmen can wear. EXTRA-LONG NECKTIES — The tip of a tie should sit at about the belt line. Big and/or tall groomsmen (typically 6 feet or taller) might find a standard 57-inch long tie too short and require an extra-long tie (an extra 6-inches longer). BOW TIES — The most formal tie style available. But how do you decide between self-tie or pretied bows? Self-tied bows must be tied by the wearer. Don't assume your groomsmen can tie a bow tie, most men can't. And every self-tie bow tie will look slightly different. If you prefer your groomsmen looking uniform, try a pre-tied bow tie. Pre-tied bow ties come in band collar or clip-on styles. Band collar bow ties have an adjustable band that expands to fit most adult neck sizes. Clip-on bow ties attach to both sides of the shirt collar.

BEAUTY + WELLNESS It’s very important to stay healthy during the wedding planning process—not only from a physical standpoint, but from an emotional one as well. As you are trying to achieve your amazing bridal glow, always remember that maintaining wellness is the highest priority. Stress can build up quickly when planning a wedding maintaining your emotional well-being will help the planning process immensely. Remember the long-term benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Exercising and eating right will keep your body in great shape, but may also help manage stress levels. Balancing work, family and wedding planning can be a challenge, but if you prioritize self-care, you’ll sail effortlessly through to your big day.

How to achieve your best wedding-day look: » Visit your stylist early in the planning process. If you will be making changes to your look, they’ll help guide you through the process. » Don’t go too drastic. You want to look back at your wedding photos and know it was a true reflection of you. » If you’ll be getting any facials, waxes or exfoliation treatments, be sure to do a trial run a few months before the wedding—you want to know how your skin may react. » Have your trial hair and makeup appointment at least two weeks before your day. You want to take the time to perfect your look before the big day arrives. » Try to make your trial for the day of your bachelorette party or bridal shower. That way, you will be able to show off your fabulous glow. » When you visit your stylist for your trial hairdo, bring all your bridal jewelry and accessories. This is so the stylist won’t have any surprises to work with on your actual wedding day.
good to know
Your beauty regimen will be roughly $150-500-plus, depending if you have weekly/ monthly appointments leading up to your wedding. Typical hair and makeup will average around $200.

157
Tips on how to achieve your ideal lifestyle: » Visit with your physician. Ask them questions about what your ideal physical condition would be. Remember not all programs are right for everyone and having help can be the first step to a successful health plan. » Don’t take on too many changes at once. You want these results to last far into your married life. » Eat healthy fruits and veggies. A good rule of thumb is the more brightly colored they are, the better they are for you. » Be active. Everyone is busy, especially when they are planning a wedding. Find time to make a consistent training program. This not only affects the size of your dress, but also the size of your stress.
158
Nicole A shley Photography
Questions to ask when selecting your hair and makeup artist: » How many weddings have you done? Can I see a portfolio of your work? » What is the total cost and what does that include? Trial sessions, day-of, extra items? » Can you accommodate my bridesmaids as well? » Do you have a group rate? » Do you have a lot of experience with my skin type? What would you recommend for a beauty regimen prior to my wedding? » What happens at the trial run? » How long do your services typically take? » Where will the hair/makeup session take place for both trial (typically at the salon) and day-of (onsite where you are getting ready)? » What would happen if you are not available that day? Would there be a replacement from the salon?

FLOWERS + DÉCOR DÉCOR RENTAL LIGHTING FLORISTS PARTY SUPPLIES
MVPHOTOS
165
FLOWERS + DÉCOR Choosing your wedding décor can be one of the most daunting tasks of the wedding. Your décor theme impacts the look of the entire day and will be seen in all your photos. Gorgeous décor will add style and glamour to the event, while thoughtfully chosen rentals will bring functionality for those attending. But where to start? The best questions that you can ask yourself are: What do you want the tone of the event to be (formal or casual)? What images are you drawn to when you look at wedding photos (modern? rustic? vintage? glamorous? romantic?) What about a color palette? Do you want to go more traditional or embrace trends? Above all, don’t forget to consider your own personal style. How can you bring these ideas to life for your guests?
166
Brianna Lane Photography
When deciding your décor, be sure to consider: the time of year, the mood you would like to set, your color palette, your venue (lavish country club or hip downtown theater), your ceremony location (a church may have rules you will need to adhere to), number of guests attending, your budget. And then there’s flowers, one of the more inspired wedding-planning decisions you make. When choosing your colors and theme, flowers can have a big influence. Vibrantly colored flowers, big blooms or large amounts of greenery can add a huge
impact to any rental space. Be sure to hire a highly regarded professional—a mistake is not something you can afford. Be sure to consider the season in which you’re getting married—this can impact your floral budget and flower options. If you are dying to have the perfect peonies in your bouquet, know that peony season is typically May and June. If your wedding is outside these months, you’ll be paying a premium for this type of bloom.
Areas that might require flowers and décor: » CEREMONY | Pews, aisles, main doorways, altar, banisters, windows, ledges, extra tables, bathrooms and any other area in your ceremony space that might look sparse. » RECEPTION | Dinner tables, cake table, gift table, escort card table, the bar, guestbook table, bathrooms, buffet table, walls or doorways, banisters, patio areas, chairs, etc. » Your décor and flowers will be responsible for roughly 12-17% of the budget. This will include rentals, setup, tear down, delivery fees and tip.
tipping guide » Florist delivery: $20-30 » Décor delivery: $20-30 (depending on the time, distance and punctuality)
167
Questions to ask when selecting your florist: » Do you have a portfolio of your work?
» Do you pin the corsages and boutonnières on everyone?
» What is the average cost for bouquets, boutonnières, corsages, etc.?
» Do you do multiple weddings on an average weekend?
» Can you provide rental items such as candelabras, aisle runners, vases, etc.?
» When do you need a final count for table centerpieces?
» Do you deliver? When will the flowers be delivered? What is the fee? » Is setup at site included? » Are you familiar with my venue?
» Can you recommend any seasonal flowers to save money? » Can you make any suggestions based on my color scheme? » How much is the deposit to secure my date? » When is the remaining balance due?
Types of flowers you will need: » Personal flowers: Bridal bouquet and toss bouquet, bridesmaid and maid of honor bouquets, groom’s boutonnière, groomsmen and best man’s boutonnières, flower girl bouquet or petals, ring bearer boutonnière, parents, grandparents, readers, ushers, soloist and your officiant. » Ceremony flowers: Pew arrangements, aisle runners, memorial bouquets, chairs, candles, altar or chuppah. » Reception flowers: Centerpieces for the guest tables, entryways, cake table, gift table, guestbook table, bars, bathrooms and anywhere else that needs a pop of color.
168
Questions to ask when selecting your décor company: » What color linens/overlays do you offer?
» What are the setup/tear down charges?
» Do you rent items such as vases, lighting, candle holders, etc.? Is there a specific quantity that I need to rent?
» Can I set up my own décor to save money?
» Do you have delivery fees? » What is the damage deposit?
» What size tent would you recommend for the size of my wedding? » Do you have setup instructions for tents and other such rental items?
» How long have you been in the rental business? » Do you have an emergency staff or after-hours contact in case we have issues with the rental equipment? » What time of day do you typically deliver? How far in advance do you deliver to the site? » Where do I put my rental items when we are done? (i.e. linens in bags, chairs on racks, tables folded, etc.) » What is the payment schedule? » Do you have a late fee?

STATIONERY INVITATIONS WEDDING FAVORS CALLIGRAPHY CUSTOM SIGNS
Lauren B aker Photography
175
STATIONERY + FAVORS Picture your wedding guests. Maybe it’s your cousin, your best friend since college or your fiancé’s grandmother. Just think of the excitement they’ll feel when they open their personalized envelope and find a beautiful wedding invitation inside. The colors pop, the attention to detail is obvious, and they can’t wait to join the celebration. Your invitation will give guests a first look at the big day to come, so make sure it matches the overall look and theme of your wedding. This will not only provide the requisite wedding information such as who, what, where and when—but will also give guests an understanding about the formality and expectations of dress for your big day. If your wedding is a black tie affair, remember to stick strictly to etiquette standards—but if you are going for a more laidback event, feel free to let the verbiage show off your playful side.
176
shelbySCphoto
Once your guest list is set and those save-thedates are in the mail, it’s time to start thinking about giving a little something back to those who have supported you in the wedding planning process. Don’t forget to purchase gifts for your wedding party—get as creative as your heart desires, but typical gifts include wedding-day jewelry for the bridesmaids and ties, pocket squares and other accessories for the groomsmen. Mothers and fathers will appreciate small, sentimental tokens on the wedding day, especially if you’ll be spending time with them before the ceremony—it’s a truly lovely gesture on this very significant day. And of course, there are the gifts from the bride and groom to one another. These can be small and sweet or grand gestures—whatever you choose, have it delivered to your partner before the ceremony with a loving note expressing your true love and commitment. Lastly: wedding favors, the treat your guests take away from your wedding. Leave them with something that will remind them of your day but also show your personal style. If you have a wedding theme, this is a great way to embellish it and go all out. Favors that will get your guests talking are those they can take home and use in their daily life. Some examples include: a personalized candle, spices for their kitchen, a wine glass, custom-made soap, or even a matchbox with your wedding date.

177
Questions to ask when selecting your invitations: » Do you have a minimum order? » Do you create custom designs? Templates? What is the price difference? » Can you help with wording? Etiquette? » Am I able to receive a hard proof before I place the entire order? » What are the charges involved? (Paper grade/ weight, envelope lettering, fonts, text colors, printing, delivery/shipping, etc.) » Do you help with the printing process? » How long will it take to print my items? » Do you offer other wedding stationary items? » Do you have a bulk order discounted rate?
Other stationery items you may need: » Ceremony programs » Rececption signage (welcome signs, seating chart, food/beverage signs, etc.) » Menus » Place cards » Table numbers » Thank You cards
178
How to choose the right favors for your guests: » If hosting a more casual event, feel free to add tons of personality and style to your wedding favors. » Lots of couples like to DIY certain pieces of the wedding—favors are a great place to start! Think Pinterest, Etsy and other crafty websites for inspiration. » What else are you providing at the wedding? Do you already have more food than anyone could ever eat? Then try to avoid an edible favor.
» Do you and your fiancé have a shared passion? Are you the eco-friendly couple? Consider a small plant that guests can take home. » Use inspiration boards and visual images to get your creative juices flowing. » Remember: Your wedding favors will remind your guests of your day and can have a lasting impression. What do you want them to physically take away from your day?

ENTERTAINMENT DJ'S BANDS CEREMONY MUSIC DANCE INSTRUCTION LIVE ENTERTAINMENT
Brianna Lane Photography
183
ENTERTAINMENT The dance floor is buzzing. The music is incredible. The crowd is celebrating the night away. This is the image many couples envision when they think about their wedding night. To ensure your night is a celebration to remember, you will need to hire the best music and entertainment. It’s crucial to hire a professional DJ that will be able to compile a great list of songs for your day. This is not an area to pinch your budget. Keeping the dance floor packed is truly a talent, and you will want someone who has a lot of experience doing so.

Your music will be responsible for roughly 5-10% of the budget. This will include: the band/DJ, their equipment rentals, any lighting that is a part of the package, mileage and tip.

Do you want music to dance to or more of an interactive music portion? A. Interactive—love the concert vibe B. Music to dance to—Electric and Cha-Cha Slide, Macarena, the works!
Mostly A’s
Mostly B’s
Think about having live music at your reception. Pros for live music are that you get the classic feel and excitement of having a live performance. If you are looking for a specific type of music, live music is a great option.
Consider having a DJ at your wedding. DJ’s are typically less expensive and have more variety in the music they can offer. They have tons of dancing songs as well as background music for dinner. They can be as flexible in their playlists as you want. You can also make a “must-play” and “do not play” list for a DJ.
185
Questions to ask when selecting your musicians or DJ: » Are you available for my specific date? » Can you play specific songs or learn them? » What is your specialty? Can and will you play a variety? » How many weddings have you done? » Can you provide me with three to four references? » How long have you been in the industry? How long have you played together?
» What is the deposit? » Do you have extra fees if you work past your designated time? » Do you provide any extra services? Lights, microphones, amps, speakers, etc. » Outdoor ceremony/reception: do you need any specific electrical equipment for outdoors? » How much space will you require? » Live music: Can we see and hear you perform?
» What sets you apart from your competition?
» Are you willing to be our announcer/ emcee for the evening?
» How far in advance do I need to book your service?
» Will you accept special requests during the reception?
tipping guide If they are hired through an agency, tipping is a great gesture. Some contracts have tipping included, so be sure to reference your invoice for services to see if this is built-in. This can be done at the end of the night when they have completed their services. You can also give these tips to your wedding planner to disperse for you. » DJ: 15-20% depending on how involved and timely your DJ has been. » Band members: $30-50 each, depending on how long their set has been. » Photo Booth staff: 10%

TRANSPORTATION VALET TROLLEYS LIMOSINES MUSCLE CARS
shelbySCphoto
197
TRANSPORTATION You’ve sealed your vows with a kiss and now it’s time to celebrate with your guests. Riding in style to your reception is a must. There are many transportation options to fit your vision such as chauffeured limousines, trolleys, classic cars, muscle cars, or even horse-drawn carriage services. How do you pick which is best for your day? If you’re considering a valet service, know that most will require a minimum car amount. Be sure to check into this before you book, since you don’t want to be left with a tab. Most services will have one valet for every 20-25 cars. This can be arranged by your venue or an outside valet service company. You may also want to consider a coat check service for your guests contingent on weather.
198
shelbySCphoto
Tips for selecting your transportation: » Think about the style of the exit you want to have. Is it a more formal affair? Then a limousine filled with your entire bridal party is the way to go. » How many people do you need to transport? When your wedding party is very large, you may need more than one limousine. You might also consider a luxury bus. » Transportation companies will need you to book their services for at least two hours. So put this time to good use. This is a great opportunity to go take some fun pictures with your wedding party offsite. » Some couples choose to arrange transportation for all guests throughout the day. If you are having a lot of outof-town guests that aren’t familiar with the area, this is a service to consider. Sometimes these shuttles can be organized through the hotel where you have a large room block. Otherwise this is something your planner can help with.
good to know
Your transportation should be responsible for roughly 3% of the budget. This means these fees typically range $400-$2,000.
tipping guide
This may be done when they have completed their services, if not already included in the charges. You can also give these tips to your wedding planner to disperse. » Driver: 15-20% of the total bill » Valet attendants: $1-1.50 per car Nicole A shley Photography

One of the best ways to ensure your trip goes well is to be as prepared as possible. » Get travel insurance: If anything happens, you’ll be prepared and won’t lose any of the deposits. » Make sure that you have all the necessary travel documentation. This can include a passport, driver’s license and birth certificate. Be sure to check with your travel agency or airline for the exact documentation needed. » Be sure to read up on current travel rules. This can be one of the most frustrating pieces of traveling. Knowing ahead of time what you will be dealing with can save a few headaches. » Reconfirm your itinerary with the airline and make sure you have transportation to the airport. » Be early: Having to rush around and feel stressed is not how you want to start your honeymoon. Give yourself plenty of time. You will enjoy this adventure together even more when you don’t feel rushed. » This is not the time to go for the cheap hotel. Splurging on some luxuries is a must on your honeymoon.

What will play a large role in the cost of your honeymoon is both the location that you choose and the flight/ transportation to get there. The average cost of a honeymoon is about $5,000. It’s very common for couples to save up and go on a honeymoon near their first anniversary as well.
