President’s Message I hope everyone had a good time at the Parade of Homes. 13 homes were featured on the Parade route this year. Not bad for our first year! The Association is proud to have been able to bring Minot another community event that gets people out and about and exploring our great city. A lot of projects are wrapping up now that the weather is changing and kids are back in school. I hope your projects have gone well and your businesses continue to be lucrative. Make sure to be on the lookout for more details about our Builders Banquet and Christmas Social coming up on December 6th. We changed things up a bit this year as our banquet is usually in October. Let us know if you like the change! We’re refreshing the Home & Garden Show this year! We will have a Lego Homebuilding Competition for kids, we’re looking into bringing a celebrity from HGTV and many more changes are on the way! As always, I wish you a safe and profitable construction season.

Phil Risbrudt MAB President

Lots in 2015 Smallest on Record The median lot size of a new single-family detached home sold in 2015 dropped under 8,600 square feet for the first time since Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction (SOC) started tracking the series. An acre is 43,560 square feet, so the current median lot size is just under one-fifth of an acre. So using a football field as a measuring stick, 5.6 median lots would fit between the goal lines of a football field in 2015. Mitch Flanagan, Building Official in Minot, says the City hasn’t noticed significantly smaller lot sizes citing newer areas like the Bluffs that have average size lots.

BUILD-PAC Opens War Chest for November Elections

To help elect pro-housing candidates in November, the BUILD-PAC Board of Trustees on Aug. 10 approved more than $500,000 in contributions to federal pro-business candidates running for office this fall. Meeting during NAHB’s Midyear Board of Directors Meeting in Miami, the trustees also discussed how to increase fundraising efforts between now and Election Day, through state events across the country.

“This election year is more important than ever for the housing industry. The outcome on Nov. 8 will set the stage for the future of housing,” said BUILD-PAC chairman Eugen Graf. “We need to work together as an industry to support our champions and advocates in Congress this fall.” As NAHB’s political action committee, BUILD-PAC helps elect the most qualified pro-housing, pro-business candidates to federal office. BUILD-PAC is bipartisan, supporting both Democrats and Republicans who help promote and protect the housing industry’s agenda. BUILD-PAC’s Board of Trustees, comprised of 150 NAHB members throughout the country, determine which candidates receive support. During the 2014 election year, BUILD-PAC supported more than 370 pro-housing candidates, and 95% of these candidates won their seats in November. NAHB also will begin endorsing Congressional candidates for the first time this fall, to help members identify the pro-housing candidates in their districts – and to remind members about the importance of participating in this election.

NDAB-PAC Supports Statewide Candidates

Arnold Karsky NDAB President

This fall NDAB-PAC is putting your PAC dollars to work. Because of NDAB members' generous support, nearly $43,000 is being used to support 55 legislative candidate races across all of North Dakota. Contributions were made based on voting records supporting the housing industry in past sessions, and on candidate forums, which local HBA offices helped to host this

summer. NDAB-PAC is excited to promote pro-housing legislative work and is thankful to our members for the impact we are able to make locally and across the state. We also plan to be busy at the Capitol during the upcoming Legislative Session making sure our message continues to be heard on any and all bills that may affect the home building industry, whether positively or negatively. Be on the look out for information to be released over the coming months and watch for ways that you can get involved. To start, mark these dates on your calendar and plan to join NDAB if possible. Again, thanks to all for your support of PAC and we look forward to working your behalf! Tuesday, January 3: 65th ND Legislative session begins February 15: Chili and Oyster Feed with Legislators in partnership with the ND Board of Realtors March 16: NDAB day at the Capitol with Lunch with Legislators in the Great Hall On another note, BUILD-PAC is making an impact with national PAC funds for November Elections. To help elect pro-housing candidates in November, the BUILD-PAC Board of Trustees on Aug. 10 approved more than $500,000 in contributions to federal pro-business candidates running for office this fall. “This election year is more important than ever for the housing industry. 2017 NAHB International Builders Show What is IBS? Why should I attend IBS? Who attends IBS? What are the costs involved? These are often the questions we hear when discussing the International Builders Show which will be held in Orlando, FL January 10-12. We encourage our members from across ND to join the over 60,000 attendees from more than 100 countries. DABA’s 1st Parade of Homes was September 10th and 11th, and it was a success! We had 13 home entries in the Parade with an average of 300-500 people through each home. We would like to thank everyone who helped, sponsored, donated, and participated! We greatly appreciate everyone’s support and are excited to make next year’s even better! Summer is officially over which means we are going back to monthly membership meetings. We hope everyone had a fantastic summer, and are looking forward to seeing our members at our monthly meetings. With the end of the year sneaking up on us, we are looking for members to join the board, a committee, or both! We are starting to plan our annual Christmas Party and 2017 Home Show, and look forward to both of these events.

WABA has had many changes over the last several months. We lost both of our Executive Directors. Jackie moved back to Salt Lake City, Janna accepted the President of the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce. This all happened within a 2 week period, just before our 2nd annual golf tournament, first clay shooting event, annual picnic, first ever raffle, and WABA hosting NAHB Chairman Ed Brady in Williston where he gave his “Breakfast with the Builders”. WABA Fall Parade of Homes is October 22nd and 23rd. The Board of Directors has been stepping up to keep the Association moving forward. We’re also trying to start a Watford City Chapter as we see the possibilities of many members from there. We’ve locked in our next three GMM’s they’re as followed, Thursday September 22nd at First International Bank and Trust. Our October GMM is October 20th at Bakken Contracting Southview Clubhouse. We’ve locked in our Annual meeting at McCody Concrete, Thursday November 10th. This is where we will award the Builder and Associate of the Year, the winners of the Parade of Homes, swear in our new Board, and our new President Bob Horab - owner of McCody Concrete. Our December social is scheduled for December 8th where we usually meet with our representatives and senators, (location is not set up).
