SEEKING NOMINATIONS! Each year, the Minot Association of Builders presents awards to outstanding members. These awards are presented at the Annual Builders Bash, which will be held November 19th, 2020 this year once again at Gravel Products. These awards are also submitted at state & national levels for consideration.
PLEASE NOMINATE A FELLOW MEMBER FOR ONE OR ALL OF THESE AWARDS! We have such an incredibly humble group and many feel uncomfortable receiving awards. Take a minute to think about your fellow members and member volunteers that fit these criteria and shine with the support of the Association, or are committed to supporting their fellow members. Visit www.minotab.com/awards to see past winners, award category details, and fill out and submit nomination forms. The following awards will be presented at this year’s Builders Bash: Builder and Associate of the Year: These awards have been around since 1980 and are based on work expended in the interest of fellow members, the Association and the community within the past year (Sept. 1, 2019 – August 31, 2020). These members are judged on: member involvement and industry promotion, civic activity, professional accomplishments, local association activity, and state & national association activities. BEAM Award: It stands for “Builders Engaging Associate Members,” and is meant to recognize Builder members who exemplify the motto “It’s good business to do business with a member.” Associate members nominate Builder members for this award. The MAB names a winner on the local level that advances to the state (North Dakota Association of Builders) level, and possibly to the national level with the National Association of Home Builders. The Builder member nominees will be evaluated on loyalty, ethics, trust, communication, and consideration. The Builder who receives the most nominations will be notified and asked to submit their list of suppliers/trade contractors. MAB staff and the board of directors will make a final decision following submission of the list.
Citizen of the Year: In choosing the recipient of the MAB Citizen of the Year award, regard is given to the nominee’s significant contribution to the community, the scope of impact the individual’s contribution has had on the local area and whether or not the nominee is an inspirational role model for the community. Dan Feist Extra Mile Award: This award was introduced in 2016. The Extra Mile Award is designed to recognize someone who has made an exceptional contribution to our organization to help MAB carry out its mission.

Due to health and safety concerns and ongoing travel restrictions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) regretfully announce that the 8th annual Design & Construction Week® (DCW) featuring NAHB’s International Builders’ Show® (IBS) and NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show® (KBIS) will no longer be an on-site event. Instead, the two groups are planning a robust, all-virtual event. Design & Construction Week was scheduled to take place on Feb. 9-11, 2021, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. The new all-virtual DCW 2021 will still take place the week of Feb. 8 with extended programming. “Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of our exhibitors, attendees and the thousands of onsite workers who support the premier event of the residential construction industry, we feel the only prudent course is to make this year’s show a virtual event,” said NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke, a custom home builder from Tampa, Fla. “We have plenty of great virtual educational programs, innovative products, services and workshops on tap, and we are very excited about the 2021 show. It’s an opportunity to set a precedent for the industry by producing a dynamic virtual trade show, and we look forward to a very successful Design & Construction Week.” “This difficult decision comes following months of lengthy conversations with NAHB and Emerald,” said Bill Darcy, CEO of the NKBA. “The safety and well-being of our attendees, partners, exhibitors, site workers and staff has always been our top priority. As we now cross the 16-weeks-out mark, it was time to transition to 100% focus on a virtual event. An all-virtual Design & Construction Week will be a different experience, but with it comes new opportunities to reach an even larger audience that would not have been able to participate on-site, for any number of reasons, including on-going travel restrictions. We pledge to transform KBIS into an exceptional show experience for everyone. And we will be back live — bigger and stronger — for DCW 2022.” Registration for the virtual DCW event is free for all NKBA and NAHB members and, as with the in-person shows, attendees will have access to KBIS and IBS exhibitors and programming. The new virtual format will allow participants to see the latest product launches, cutting-edge housing and design innovations, hear from the top leaders in the industry, and take part in online education courses, from wherever they are in the world. Support from the exhibitor community has been solid. "With safety and well-being of attendees, exhibitors, vendors and trade-show staff as the priority, Kohler Co. applauds the difficult but appropriate decision made jointly by the NKBA and NAHB converting KBIS and IBS, respectively, to being 100% virtual,” said David Kohler, CEO of Kohler Co. “We look forward to the opportunity to connect with our trade customers and showcase our new products and innovations.” "We cherish our partnerships with NKBA and NAHB. In our shared commitment to the health and safety of industry colleagues, we fully support their decision to reimagine the 2021 KBIS and IBS events,” said Thomas Yoon, President and CEO of LG Electronics North America. “As trusted partners, LG and Signature Kitchen Suite remain committed to working with these organizations to deliver engaging virtual experiences for the designer and builder communities, while continuing our major presence in The New American Home and The New American Remodel for 2021. We're optimistic about the recovery ahead, and we look forward to reconnecting in person with industry partners in Orlando in 2022.” Design & Construction Week will return to Orlando as an in-person event Feb. 8-10, 2022. Further details on the virtual offerings will be forthcoming. HOW TO
{ declutter} YOUR HOME
FOLLOW THIS STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO MAKE YOUR HOME MORE MANAGEABLE AND ORGANIZED. UNLESS YOU'RE A MINIMALIST, chances are your home is more
cluttered than you would like. Disorganization at home is a common problem and can range from a little messiness to a chronic hoarding disorder. And regardless of how untidy and disheveled your space is, decluttering can be a challenge. We've broken down the best tips for getting rid of clutter, plus reasons a decluttered home can help you thrive.
SCHEDULE | It's too easy to put off decluttering when you don't dedicate time to the activity. Make an appointment on your calendar, the same way you do for a business meeting or doctor's visit, recommends Rachel Rosenthal, founder of organizing firm Rachel and Company, based in the District of Columbia.
START SIMPLE | Even if you have a ton of work to do,
don't try to do too much at once. Know your limits when it comes to how long you can be productive, and avoid overworking "so it doesn't seem like this task that is overwhelming and insurmountable," Rosenthal says. As for where to get started, choose a spot that will make the biggest impact on your life. "Go through your day ‌ and really pay attention to where your home and your clutter is keeping you from doing those things smoothly," says Tracy McCubbin, founder of organizing company dClutterfly and author of "Making Space, Clutter Free." If cluttered kitchen counters mean you're less likely to cook a healthy meal, for example, focus on the kitchen first so daily food prep is less of a daunting task.
REWARD YOURSELF | Organizing isn't always fun, so
you might as well give yourself a little incentive for getting a bit done. "Start small and give yourself a reward," Rosenthal says. A bottle of wine, a piece of clothing if you purged a significant amount of your wardrobe or even a nice walk outside can give you the motivation you need to get a segment done.
BUILD MOMENTUM | Once you've managed to im-
prove your day-to-day activities with initial decluttering, you'll begin to see the benefits of the effort and keep going in other parts of the house. "If you do one area, you're going to want to do your whole house," McCubbin says. If the cleared kitchen cabinets have already made cooking a meal easier, you'll want to make getting dressed in the morning or doing your nightly skincare routine just as simple by decluttering your closet or bathroom. From there, you can take on bigger spaces like the basement or garage.
ADOPT A CLUTTER-FREE MINDSET | Unfortunately, decluttering isn't just a one-time project. Stuff comes into your house constantly in the form of junk mail, online shopping and birthday or holiday presents. You can avoid overwhelming yourself by continuously tidying and keeping an eye on the state of counters, closets and floor space. "If you can't clear a room in 20 minutes, the clutter has gotten the upper hand," McCubbin says.
MAKE IT A SEASONAL PROJECT |
RECYCLE, GIVE AWAY OR SELL ITEMS | As you go Even if you stay vigilant about regularly reducing clutter at room by room, separate out items for proper disposal. Plastic, paper and glass can be recycled, while expired food items and worn-out clothes should be thrown out. Furniture, clothes and electronics that still look good can either be sold or given away. You can easily drop off items at Goodwill or Salvation Army locations, or even arrange for a pickup if items are too big for you to move easily. If you're planning to sell items, make sure you post them for sale online soon – a pile of items sitting around waiting to be sold is still a pile of clutter in your home. MINOT ASSOCIATION OF BUILDERS
home, you'll benefit from dedicating time to decluttering seasonally. "Spring and fall are my go-to if you're going to do it just twice a year," Rosenthal says. The changes in season make it easier to purge items you didn't end up wearing in the summer or winter, and this keeps a steady flow of unnecessary items leaving your house. NDAB BOARD PRESIDENT
NDAB CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
HEADING TO THE POLLS November 3, 2020 is the official general election day. It is the day that North Dakota citizens, and everyone across the nation, will head to the poll to cast their vote for those they feel will best represent their views. Regardless of your political views, election day is a very important time and is about exercising your right to vote. In North Dakota, voters will have the opportunity to vote for President of the United States, United States Representative, Governor, Lt. Governor and several other statewide executives and judicial branch offices. Voters who live in evennumbered legislative districts will also select their representatives to the ND House of Representatives and North Dakota Senate. Voters may also face any number of constitutional amendments, initiated measures, or referred measures placed on the ballot by petition. Since North Dakota is the only state without voter registration, we want to ensure you are prepared to vote. Below is some information to know ahead of time: In order to vote in North Dakota, you must be:
A citizen of the United States; • Eighteen years or older on the day of election; • A resident of North Dakota; • A resident in the precinct at least thirty days immediately preceding any election; and • Able to provide a North Dakota driver’s license, nondriver ID, or tribal ID that includes your current residential address and date of birth. Ensure that your identification included your name, current residential or mailing address and date of birth. If you are unavailable to go to your polling location on election day or maybe you prefer to cast your vote from the comfort of your own home, absentee voting is also an option. You can receive an absentee ballot by submitting a request with the valid information required to vote through the ND Secretary of State. To learn more about voting in North Dakota or to educate yourself on which candidates and issues will be on the November ballots, please visit the ND Secretary of States website at www.sos.nd.gov. Voter information, candidate information, dates, locations and even election results will all be made available here. “Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.” -- Franklin D. Roosevelt

AROUND THE STATE HOME BUILDERS ASSOC. OF FARGO-MOORHEAD BRYCE JOHNSON, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER 701-232-5846 | HBAFM.COM HBA of F-M has completed discussions with candidates from every legislative district in Fargo. These meetings were opportunities for Association leaders to learn about candidates’ priorities and introduce the association to current and aspiring lawmakers. They have also been an excellent chance to sample and evaluate many virtual forums and approaches. Members doing business in Minnesota will meet with legislators and inspectors on Aug. 20 to discuss how code complexity discourages builders from operating in Minnesota and compromises growth opportunities in border cities like Moorhead. The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry is considering whether to amend the state’s residential conservation code. Members believe the amendments would increase costs for minimal paybacks, so the Association submitted a letter opposing the proposals. We have been communicating with housing associations across the Minnesota. The judge has extended time for comment and rebuttal. The Aug. 11 Golf Outing provided members some welldeserved fun at Oxbow Country Club. HBA of F-M volunteers escorted participants to holes, delivered snacks and supported the prize giveaways. Thanks to every member, volunteer, sponsor and the Oxbow staff for helping take the HBA of F-M’s golf outings to new levels! The July and August events combined to generate more than $4,300 for NDAB-PAC. Verity Homes Director of Sales Rory Anderson has become HBA of F-M alternate trustee to NDABPAC. Rory is an enthusiastic and loyal champion of the housing industry. The association is grateful for his readiness to support and help guide membership and PAC endeavors.

NATIONAL NEWS
NAHB CONVEYS URGENT CONCERNS ON LUMBER WITH COMMERCE SECRETARY In a special webcast for association leaders and now available to members on NAHB efforts to combat rising lumber prices and supply shortages, NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke said that Senior Officers held talks with members of the White House National Economic Council (NEC) on Aug. 28 to discuss the impact that soaring lumber prices are having on the housing industry. “The White House is listening to us,” said Fowke. “They are moving and trying to get something done. They understand the importance of our industry.” Since mid-April, the composite price of lumber, per Random Lengths, has soared more than 160%. This surge is adding approximately $16,000 the price of a new single-family home and more than $6,000 to the average new apartment, according to the latest NAHB economic analysis. During the webcast, NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz provided an analysis of the market situation and said that escalating lumber prices in recent months are due to the fact that there is not enough domestic production. Many mills reduced production due to stay-at-home orders and social distancing measures enacted by state and local governments at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Mill operators projected that housing would be adversely affected by the crisis and anticipated a large drop in demand. But housing weathered the storm much better than was predicted, and demand for lumber has accelerated. The extreme lumber price volatility has been exacerbated by tariffs averaging more than 20% on Canadian lumber imports into the U.S. market.
SEEKING ACTION AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL :
In addition to the Senior Officers meeting with the White House NEC, NAHB has reached out to President Trump, Commerce Secretary Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Lighthizer urging the administration to alleviate this growing threat to housing and the economy by:
1. Calling on domestic lumber producers to ramp up production to ease growing shortages; and 2. Making it a priority to work with Canada on a new softwood lumber agreement that would end tariffs averaging more than 20% on Canadian lumber shipments into the U.S. Additionally, NAHB has called on members of the U.S. Lumber Coalition to boost production and offered to work together to address shortages in the lumber supply chain caused in part by the current pandemic. On the congressional front, NAHB is urging lawmakers to help boost production by seeking higher targets for timber sales from publicly-owned lands and opening up additional federal forest lands for logging in an environmentally sustainable manner.
YOU CAN HELP :
NAHB is encouraging all members to take just a few minutes to contact your individual members of Congress and tell them how this lumber crisis is harming your businesses and our industry by logging onto BuilderLink. This will allow you to lend your voice to this effort by sending a letter to your federal lawmaker and urging him/her to take action.

MINOT ASSOCIATION OF BUILDERS
NATIONAL NEWS So far, we have contacted more than 400 congressional offices as 1,700 members have sent more than 5,800 emails to their representatives. The more members who participate in this action, the greater the clout for our industry. On the media front, NAHB has served as the voice of housing, getting our message to Fox Business, CNBC, Forbes, Bloomberg and Motley Fool, who have published articles and aired stories in the fight for price stabilization.
ESCALATION C LAUSE:
On the individual business front, NAHB recommends inclusion of an escalation clause in contracts. If lumber prices increase by a certain percentage, the customer would be required to pay the extra costs. “As a builder, I gave out prices in April, signed a contract in May, and then experienced tremendous increases in the price of lumber,” said Fowke. “It is affecting my business as well.” A sample escalation clause can be found at nahbnow.com. NAHB CEO Jerry Howard also hosted a recent podcast outlining the association’s efforts on the lumber issue and Fowke provided a video summary of efforts as well in a Chairman’s Update blog post. NAHB will continue working on all fronts to find solutions that will ensure U.S. home builders have access to a stable supply of lumber at reasonable prices to keep housing affordable for hardworking American families. “The Senior Officers are working hard together to address these issues,” said Fowke. “This has become a top priority for myself and the staff at NAHB.”
