I would like to say thank you to Pat Bailey for being our president over the past year and thank everyone on the board of directors and all of our committees for investing their time into the association. We are also fortunate to have a great EO. Erika took over after Elysha moved away in June and thanks to her we haven’t missed a beat.

The Builders' Bash was nothing short of a darn good time this December and we are so grateful to everyone who helped make the event possible. Nearly 95 MAB members and guests attended the annual meeting and holiday celebration, dressed in the tackiest of tacky Christmas sweaters. We were hosted by Gravel Products once again and were floored by their hospitality and spotless shop, which was the perfect event venue. Delicious food from Starving Rooster was a hit, and drinks were delivered to our hands by Pink’s Bar. We played Builder Bingo to raise funds for NDAB-PAC and enjoyed a new game: Hard Hats & Hammers, to raise funds for the MAB Dana Ebel Memorial Scholarship Fund. The evening was emceed by Minot Mayor, Shaun Sipma, and we also welcomed NAHB Regional field rep, Matt Milroy, as well as NDAB Executive Officer, Kim Schneider. NDAB Board President, Nate Applegren was on hand to install the 2020 MAB Board of Directors, and we welcomed our new president, Pat Graner, while thanking our outgoing president, Pat Bailey, for his year of service. We also had the pleasure of honoring some outstanding businesses and individuals for the work they have done this past year to help our Association and our community.. The night ended with a few rounds of Name That tune, Family Feud, and Scavenger Hunts, hosted by the always-hilarious Encore Events. Thank you also to Gemar Photography who captured some images from our evening of good times & great company! Mark your calendars and don’t miss out next year — the BASH just keeps getting better!

MAB’s 40 Below Council hosted the second annual Bags & Builders cornhole tournament in November. We enjoyed the rivalry between the 40 Below age group and the 40 Above age group. Our gracious hosts, Lowe’s Garden Center featured the defending champions who took home the victory once again. Delicious food from Bones BBQ was a welcome snack between games, and fun was had by all!

CONTRACTING CONCERNS
Yes, it’s that time of year again. As a reminder, preparing your employees for harsh winter weather conditions requires more than a just note on the bulletin board to wear their hats and gloves. Preparation and training must begin before the temperature drops, and it requires more than just adding additional clothing. This is even more important in our region where employees can get a little complacent when it comes to cold, snow and ice. The number of drivers braving, and falling victim to, the recent storms is a glaring reminder of this. To keep you and your workers safe, please take a moment to review these tips: AT A MINIMUM, TRAIN WORKERS ON: First aid and how to call for additional medical assistance in an emergency How to select proper clothing for cold, wet, and windy conditions Recognizing the types of Cold Stress: Immersion/Trench Foot - Trench foot is a non-freezing injury of the feet caused by prolonged exposure to wet and cold conditions. Symptoms - Reddening skin, tingling, pain, swelling, leg cramps, numbness, and blisters. Frostbite - caused by the freezing of the skin and tissues. Frostbite can cause permanent damage to the body, and in severe cases can lead to amputation. Symptoms - Reddened skin develops gray/white patches in the fingers, toes, nose, or ear lobes; tingling, aching, a loss of feeling, firm/hard, and blisters may occur in the affected areas. Hypothermia - occurs when the normal body temperature (98.6°F) drops to less than 95°F. Exposure to cold temperatures causes the body to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Prolonged exposure to cold will eventually use up the body’s stored energy. Symptoms - uncontrollable shivering, loss of coordination, confusion, slurred speech, heart rate/breathing slow, unconsciousness and possibly death. PAY ATTENTION TO THE WIND CHILL Workers exposed to windy conditions are at far greater risk of cold stress The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) developed a Work/Warm-up Schedule for a 4-hour shift takes both air temperature and wind speed into account, to provide recommendations on scheduling work breaks and ceasing non -emergency work. You can find more information here: OSHA Winter Weather Guide WEAR PROPER COLD-WEATHER CLOTHING Dressing properly is extremely important to preventing cold stress. When cold environments or temperatures cannot be avoided, the following would help protect workers from cold stress: Wear at least three layers of loose-fitting clothing. Layering provides better insulation. An inner layer of wool, silk or synthetic (polypropylene) to keep moisture away from the body. Thermal wear, wool, silk or polypropylene, inner layers of clothing that will hold more body heat than cotton. A middle layer of wool or synthetic to provide insulation even when wet. An outer wind and rain protection layer that allows some ventilation to prevent overheating. Knit mask to cover face and mouth (if needed) Hat that will cover your ears as well. Insulated gloves (water resistant if necessary), to protect the hands Insulated and waterproof boots to protect the feet ARTICLE CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

New year, new decade. Time to breathe new life into home design. Restoration, optimism and sophistication are woven throughout this year’s selection of colors of the year, announced annually by Pantone and various major paint manufacturers. Each color represents an expected trend by each company, based on the current activity in the industry and what it anticipates for the year ahead. Clear patterns for 2020 include nature-inspired hues, soft, cheerful pastels and timeless basics to create inviting spaces intended for recharging to tackle the year ahead.
Pantone – Classic Blue, a simple, elegant hue that pro-
vides a relaxing environment. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking — challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication,” stated Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.. Behr – Back To Nature, a restorative and meadow-inspired green that sets the tone for the company’s 2020 color trends palette. Benjamin Moore – First Light, “a soft, rosy hue blooming with potential” to brighten the years to come. Dunn Edwards – Minty Fresh to capture “the enthusiasm and optimism of a new decade.” HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams – Romance, a calming blush that pairs well with the company’s Simply Blissful 2020 Color Collection of the Year, comprising warm neutrals and peaceful jewel tones.

inky blue that imparts calmness and restful sleep while also offering the spirit of hopefulness.” Sherwin-Williams – Naval, a rich navy that evokes the power of nature to inspire confidence as well as a connection to the outdoors. Valspar – Rather than pinpoint one specific color, Valspar announced a color palette of 12 hues it expects to trend throughout the year: Winter Calm – a sophisticated, lavender-hued neutral for every space. Canyon Earth – a hint of rustic elegance combined with the earthiness of sunbaked clay. Desert Fortress – a sandy tone embodying “quiet recharge, [and] promoting self-expression and simplicity.” Pale Powder – an earthy, timeless tan that balances well against cool tones. Secret Moss – a neutral with a strong balance between old and new to bring the outdoors in. Secluded Garden – an “ocean-inspired jewel tone” that presents a trendy sense of “new-stalgia.” Tempered Sage – a “fresh take on lime green” that’s equally calming and invigorating. MAB ATTENDS NDAB ANNUAL MEETING AT RALPH ENGELSTAD ARENA MAB Board members were in Grand Forks in November for the North Dakota Association of Builders Annual Banquet and Board Meetings, hosted by Forx Builders. Nate Applegren, of Applegren Construction in Grand Forks, was inducted as the NDAB President for 2020. MAB has representation on the NDAB Board of Directors who were sworn in at the banquet: Phil Risbrudt, Pat Graner, Shane Lider and Joe Stenvold. This upcoming November, the NDAB Annual banquet will be held in Minot, as Phil Risbrudt will be the NDAB President in 2021. We look forward to hosting the event this year and welcoming the NDAB Board of Directors to Minot!

Season’s Greetings! The beginning of a new year and a new decade begins in precisely three weeks. In most respects, January 1st will be business as usual, just with a more significant calendar change. Yet new ventures are planned for 2020 that will broaden our spectrum of services. NDHFA is in the process of taking on the administration of the North Dakota Homeless Continuum of Care (CoC). The U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development program promotes a community-wide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness. Currently, the North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People manages the CoC. There are critical elements that need to be addressed before NDHFA administers the program, but we have determined that the CoC fits within our mission and we are ready to take on this new responsibility. Our annual conference will become smaller, targeted housing forums in 2020 with Homeownership scheduled in February and Multifamily in April. By hosting shorter, more narrowly focused events at times and in locations that are more convenient for our business partners, our goal is to create opportunities for more meaningful conversations while offering audiencespecific education. Registration is open for the first event, the Homeownership Forum, which will feature Ruth Dillingham, a residential real estate sales and mortgage lending expert, in two locations, Bismarck and Fargo. The multifamily event agenda will be released in January. If you are interested, we are still accepting sponsors and exhibitors for the forums. As we look to the new year, we must celebrate the success of 2019. NDHFA’s homeownership numbers were strong this year thanks to our lender and real estate partners. Their support drives our ability to fulfill our mission to ensure that every North Dakotan has a place to call home. The 2019 Legislative allocation of $7.5 million for the Housing Incentive Fund and our planning division’s leveraging of 4% bonds allowed NDHFA to fund twice as many multifamily housing projects, as usual, this fall. Urban and rural communities statewide will be constructing and rehabilitating affordable homes for working families and our aging population, persons with disabilities and people experiencing homelessness.
A final development that took me by surprise this year was the financial award NDHFA received through a multi-state action lawsuit regarding the manipulation of the LIBOR rate by some banks, to their benefit. LIBOR was used as the index to adjust rates on our bond issues. The tenacity of our staff proved fruitful and we plan to use the settlement funds to help the largest number of North Dakotans possible. Every year seems to pass by more quickly than the one before, so all of us at NDHFA want to take a moment to let all of you know that we sincerely wish you many blessings this holiday season and hope for another wonderful year full of partnership and progress in 2020.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I am so honored to be your NDAB President for 2020 and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Nate Applegren of Applegren Construction, Inc. in Grand Forks, ND. Over the years I have been involved with my Local, State and National Associations on many levels. It has been my privilege to represent the NDAB at National Events and Meetings and I look forward to continuing to do so in my new capacity as President. I would like to thank all of you that were able to travel to Grand Forks for the NDAB Annual Meeting and Banquet and be there to support and celebrate with me while myself and the new 2020 NDAB Board of Directors were sworn in. It was a very special evening for myself and my family and I am glad I was able to share it with several of you. In the coming year I will be challenging my fellow members to take a hard look at our membership statewide. With some of our local HBA's showing promising growth there are still areas of the state that we are struggling and it is important no matter where your located, no matter what your retention rates are to continue to fight to keep those members we do have in good standing and to continue to recruit new members into the associations as well. It is not just the responsibility of your local HBA to put the work in to recruit and maintain membership. We as members need to reach out peer to peer and educate new businesses on the benefits of membership as well as remind the existing members the value of having a 3-in-1 membership Local, State and National. DEAL REACHED ON USMCA TRADE PACT In a step forward to address the nation’s growing housing affordability crisis, the White House and House Democrats have agreed on a deal to advance the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The House ratified the trade pact on Dec. 19 and the Senate is expected to follow suit at the beginning of next year. Trade policy affects housing costs and the USMCA has important implications for the home building industry. The U.S. residential construction and remodeling industries rely on tens of billions of dollars in building materials sourced from Mexico and Canada annually because America cannot produce enough steel, aluminum and other materials and equipment to meet the needs of the domestic housing industry. The price volatility of these imported materials and equipment are needlessly driving up housing costs and exacerbating the nation’s housing affordability woes.
THE LATEST FRAMING LUMBER PRICES
The USMCA is clearly a major improvement over the outdated 25-year-old NAFTA. By modernizing and strengthening free trade with our largest trading partners, the U.S. International Trade Commission predicts that the USMCA will create more than 175,000 new jobs, add about $70 billion to the economy and boost wages for American workers. “NAHB commends President Trump and House Democrats for working together in a bipartisan spirit to reach an agreement on approving the USMCA trade deal, which represents a win for the U.S. economy, a win for American jobs and a win for housing affordability,” said NAHB Chairman Greg Ugalde. “Many of the products that go into American homes come from Mexico or Canada. By moving swiftly to ratify the USMCA, Congress will help to address the nation’s housing affordability crisis.”

CONTRACTING CONCERNS
USE APPROPRIATE ENGINEERING CONTROLS Engineering controls can be effective in reducing the risk of cold stress. For example, radiant heaters may be used to warm workplaces like outdoor security stations. If possible, employers should shield work areas from drafts or wind to reduce wind chill. Employers should use engineering controls to protect workers from other winter weather related hazards, for example, aerial lifts or ladders can be used for safely applying de-icing materials to roofs, to protect workers from the hazard of falling through sky lights. STAY WELL NOURISHED BY EATING AND DRINKING ENOUGH Make sure to drink enough fluids, as you dehydrate faster in cold weather conditions. Dehydration causes headaches, dizziness and fatigue, and it’s important to stay alert outdoors. Eating enough food during the day, especially fats and carbohydrates, is also important. Your body uses those nutrients as energy to stay warm in cold temperatures. STAY WELL REED Working outdoors can be challenging and increases risks to your safety. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep to stay alert on the job when conditions are more dangerous. PLAN BREAKS FROM THE COLD Just like you need to take breaks from your work throughout the day, your body needs to take breaks from the cold. Plan warm-up times throughout your day to avoid numbness and shivers. STAY DRY Damp clothing can quickly drop your body temperature. It’s more important than ever to stay dry in the cold. Wear a moisture-wicking base layer to draw away sweat as you work. Wear waterproof gear as an outer shell to prevent your under layers from getting wet. Remove any wet clothing immediately. KEEP A COLD WEATHER SAFETY KIT IN YOUR VEHICLE If you’re on the road, make sure to take a cold weather safety kit. A cold weather kit should include emergency blankets, candles, and matches. A candle burning in a vehicle could provide enough warmth to ward off hypothermia for a period of time.
