1. BUILD FROM WITHOUT 由“无”至“有” Fall 2014

This project is a study of how local community culture relates to the design and thinking about the relationship between function and form. Does the form follow the function or the function follows the form? The site is a parking garage locates in downtown Cincinnati. Students were asked to visit different Cincinnati communities, look at the local design components of residence, such as roof, facade and window. Students need to document types of apertures and combine them as a whole. The programs are free selected by myself, except the must have-swiming pool & theather. This drawing is made to illustrate the programs of the design and the design performs itself to the surroundings. The building sits in downtown Cincinnati which makes itself as a point of interest, the design tries to engage community life along with its functions. This project is a study of corporating body modular in designing. Students were asked to take body measurements of themselves. Use the measurement schemes come up with diagrams which apply to array, stack, skew, taper, and carve. 3. CUP CAKE STORE 杯子蛋糕专卖店 WINTER 2013

This project was about designing a cup cake shop space while applying the verb “INTENSIVE”. The first step was to define “INTENSIVE”, which is the strong feeling of something towards your eyes that makes you nervous. The store design maintains programs: Accessibility, ADA bathroom, Service counter, Coffee bar, Recycle bins, Self-Help shelf, Coffee table and seats, and Dish washer, etc. The concept of “INTENSIVE” was brought into the design by using sharp angles which excites people’s mind, and having a ceiling that slopes lower in the south entrance to create the sense of objects coming towards people’s eyes. 4. DUCATI MOTOR STORE Spring 2013

This project involved designing a space for the motor store DUCATI. The design concept of the space was “PROTECTION”. To define “PROTECTION”, the helmet was the first image that came to my mind. Starting with the helmet shape, serveral interations were made to create private spaces and transition spaces which connected spaces of different programs. The store design adapted its programs with ADA designs, Private meeting room, ADA showerooms, point of sale, reception desk, repaire space, etc. The design engaged “PROTECTION” by using the enveloping structure to bring up the feeling of safety, people would feel protected while walking through transition spaces as well.

5. Space Wall 空间与墙 (Group Project) 团队合作 Spring 2014

Starting with a strip study which use shapes to bring out horizontal shifts, vertical shifts and diagonal shifts. The shapes later turned into 3-D models, and corporated with human activities, such as sitting and climbing. The project requires 7 sections students to build 7 models on the site and the 7 models have to be connected but can be different design concepts. The final “built on site” was the one from the other group in the same section class.
