Design Concept Pedestrain Zone

The plan outlined in this document aims to improve the neighbourhood of Hammersmith through increased mobility and connectivity. In our initial analysis of Hammersmith, transportation was identified as a important theme. While the area is well connected to other areas of London through the Underground and the A4, the neighbourhood itself is disjointed and difficult to navigate. In order to improve connectivity in the neighbourhood, valuable resources in the area were identified. The SWOT and additional analysis determined a number of important spaces in Hammersmith, such as Ravenscourt Park, Furnival Gardens, King Street, and Hammersmith Station. These locations, while geographically close, were often difficult to travel between due to overcrowded roadways, the presence of the A4, and a series of walkways and subways lined with inactive frontage. The goal was to link these desperate landmarks by providing new spaces for walking and cycling, and a green corridor to make the neighbhourhood feel cohesive while creating an obvious path that leads people to new and exciting areas within Hammersmith. As part of these improvements, three major changes will also be implemented along the Hammersmith

TOWNHALL ANTI-CAFE

WISLAWA SZYMBORSKA SQUARE

The Town Hall Anti-Cafe will allow visitors to pay a fixed amount of money per hour to access unlimited wifi, coffee, and kitchen facilities. Based on a successful example opened in Shoreditch at the beginning of 2014, the Town Hall Anti-Cafe is a place where you can spend time without being urged to buy something. It is a nice alternative to the retail hub fame built around Hammersmith, and fosters communication between users, exchange of information and knowledge spillover, which could benefit the startups mentioned on page 42. The anti-cafe could also be a source of revenue for the council, as the space can be rented out for large events such as concerts or conferences.

Named after the Nobel prize Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska to celebrate the Polish culture and community that historically inhabits Hammersmith, this square hosts a large green space and a variety of seating. The green corridor will surround the perimeter of the park with hammocks strung between the trees. Additional green sculptural seating will also be provided in the square. This location is ideal for small-scale exhibitions showcasing local history and artists. For people queuing to do business at the Town Hall, this square could serve as a outdoor waiting room, an icon of the new, greener Hammersmith.
