IT TAKES TWO by Kevin Purvis, BS, CSCS If you’re looking for a good way to stay motivated to get to the gym and even better, once you’re there to stay focused on your workout, you should consider finding a workout partner. Getting yourself a buddy to workout with can not only increase the intensity of your workout, it can also make you more consistent with getting yourself to the gym (and you might even enjoy yourself a little more.) This month I’m giving you and your new workout partner a starting point to kick off your routine together. As always, I encourage you to take the basic structure of this program and use some creativity to introduce your own exercise choices into the mix. The program has 3 exercises that you will be doing together as well as 3 ‘supersets’, which are 2 exercises that you perform back-to-back. Super-setting your exercises will allow you both to be working at the same time. When you both complete your set, simply switch places and perform the other exercise. Keep things simple in the beginning and perform 3 sets of 12 repetitions for each exercise in the super-set. For the partnered exercises, perform each one for 60 seconds. I chose the exercises in this program with consideration to space. The equipment you need will be easy to take to your workout spot and trade off. This makes working out with a partner much easier, since you don’t have to worry about someone else jumping on your machine in-between sets.

> Partnered Exercise #1: Medicine Ball Rotational Toss Grab a medicine ball that weighs around 3 Kilograms (about 6.5 pounds) and a mat for your partner to kneel on. Once your partner is kneeling, stand a few feet away and toss the ball to him. Your partner should catch the ball, rotate his torso with it then toss the ball back to you. Each guy should catch and release the ball for 30 seconds on each side. Start with one set each and work yourselves up to 3 sets each. Make sure to stay upright on your knees. Don’t sit back when you catch the ball!

Keep an eye on each other for form and technique! A little encouragement wouldn’t hurt either; remember, you guys are there to work hard.

> Super-set #1: Barbell Curl Stand with your feet slightly apart, butt out and lean forward just slightly. Grip the barbell tightly as you bring the bar up. Lower the bar all the way down each and every time! Make sure your elbows lock out at the bottom; this will give you the full range-of-motion.

> Super-set #1: Dumbbell Chest Press Lie back on the bench with your feet on the floor. Slowly lower the dumbbells until your arms are at a 90-degree angle. Press the dumbbells up and together with force (don’t let them touch, though!)

2 > Partnered Exercise #2: Push-up Hand Claps Get yourself and your partner into a plank position head-to-head. Perform a push-up then clap your right hand with his right hand. Do another push-up then clap left hand to left hand. Look each other in the eye and make sure you maintain your posture throughout each push-up. Start with one set for 60 seconds and work your way up to 3 sets for 60 seconds each.

> Super-set #2: Dumbbell Single-arm Row Place one hand toward the front of the bench and one knee toward the back of the bench. Leave one foot on the floor and grab a dumbbell with your free hand. Check the mirror to make sure that your back is flat then look at the floor to keep your neck alignment neutral. Row the dumbbell up toward the bottom of your ribcage, slowly lower then repeat.

> Super-set #2: Dumbbell Overhand Tricep Extension

Grab one dumbbell with both hands and bring it up to sit on your shoulder. Place one foot slightly forward. This will help keep your hips in a neutral position. Holding the dumbbell by one endcap, press the weight up toward the ceiling.

3

Lower the weight keeping both elbows close to your head then repeat.

> Partnered Exercise #3: Medicine Ball Sit-ups Grab a mat for yourself and one for your partner, as well as the 3 Kilogram ball you used in the first partnered exercise. Sit on the mat toe-to-toe and interlock your feet together. Each of you will perform a sit-up, one with the medicine ball held over his head and the other without. Pass the ball back-and-forth each time you sit-up. Start with one set for 60 seconds and work your way up to 3 sets for 60 seconds each.

> Super-set #3: Dumbbell Arnold Press

> Super-set #3: Side Lunge

Sit upright on the end of the bench with two dumbbells.

Stand with both feet together and your eyes forward.

Bring the dumbbells together underneath your chin with your palms facing your body.

As you initiate movement, straddle your legs wide.

As you press the weights up and over your head, rotate your palms to face away from your body. Slowly lower and rotate then repeat the movement.

Lock your right knee and sit your glutes back as your left knee bends. You can keep your hands in front of you to help counterbalance your movement. Lift the toes of your left foot up inside your shoes to keep your weight back onto your heel. Push back off of your left foot and bring your feet back together as you stand. Repeat the movement on the opposite side.

GROOMING HYDRATED: QUENCH YOUR EPIDERMIS By Courtney Metelmann The cold weather is in full swing. It is beautiful, but the cold and dry air can often wreak havoc on our skin. I wanted to share with you some tips below so you’ll be ready to go walking in a winter wonderland.

Chapped Lips Begone: Once you’re ready to head out the door, one wardrobe element that’s essential to conquering the winter cold is lip balm. Your lip balm will offer great protection against cold, sun, and wind and will help to prevent chapping. A Handy Skin Helper: When you head outdoors, be sure to put on a good hand lotion and wear your gloves. It’s simple and can help protect hands from the cold temperatures and dry air. Protecting your hands can help eliminate cracked and splitting cuticles. Add Some Humidity: Beyond skin treatments and cold protection, you can do your skin some good by incorporating simple things into your daily routine as well. For one thing, you can add some moisture to the air in your home and at the office. Heating systems blow dry air into our surroundings, and that dry air then robs your skin of moisture. To counteract the drying affect buy a humidifier for your bedroom, living room or office. From the Inside Out: Another strategy is to hydrate your skin with good nutrition. Aside from fitting in the recommended eight glasses of water a day, make it a goal to start incorporating green tea into your everyday life. I recommend a natural antioxidant, and you can drink it hot or cold. It’s a great way to hydrate your body, skin and protect from oxidation damage.

Stay out of hot water: Literally. Cold showers aren’t necessary, but it is important to turn the temperature down and not linger in the water. Your goal: Limit baths or showers to 4 or 5 minutes using lukewarm water. While a hot shower or bath might feel heavenly during the coldest months of the year, warmer than necessary water will strip your body of moisture, leaving it dry and rough afterwards. Keep your bath time water to a lukewarm temperature and make sure you apply cream or lotion right after bathing. For additional hydration, use your creme while your skin is still moist to lock in the moisture and keep your skin softer for a longer period of time. Slather on Smoothness: Moisturize. Moisturize. Moisturize: The key to keeping skin healthy in cold weather is keeping it hydrated. Colder air has less moisture causing skin to dry and chap easily. To make up for this lack of hydration, use a richer moisturizer than you would during warmer months. The perfect moisturizer will restore optimal hydration, comfort and relieve the appearance of fine lines leaving complexion soft, supple and luminescent. Exfoliate: Of course, all the moisturizer in the world won’t help you if you’re slathering it onto dead skin. If you haven’t already, I recommend adding a peel into your beauty and cleansing routine. Exfoliation is a must for keeping skin replenished, especially during the winter months. In addition to benefiting the results of your moisturizer, this will help to lessen lines, wrinkles, refine pore size, improve skin texture and reveal healthy skin tissue. Don’t forget about the Sun: Another product that you wouldn’t necessarily think should be part of the winter routine is actually pretty important—sunscreen! Snow reflects the sunlight and the ultraviolet rays are just as intense in the winter. Participating in winter recreational activities without applying sunscreen can result in sun damage, even though the sun may not necessarily feel hot.

Gay men need medical attention from providers who know they’re gay and can counsel and help them with the issues that are our issues. The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) is an organization of health care professionals who maintain a list of providers who are sensitive to the issues of our community. In Chicago, we are fortunate to have the benefit of the Center on Halsted and the Howard Brown Center as resources as well. The Howard Brown Center offers services to patients on a sliding scale for those who are uninsured. They also take insured patients, which increases the care they can offer to those who are uninsured.

WHY DO YOU NEED A DOCTOR? According to the GLMA, there are things you need to have the freedom to specifically discuss with a health care provider on a regular basis.

THINGS GAY MEN SHOULD DISCUSS WITH THEIR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER

1 2

by Dr. Joseph Yates MD, FACEP

HIV/SAFE SEX

This issue was discussed in detail in the November 2009 issue of MintMale, and as discussed in the December issue, there are treatments and vaccines on the horizon. However, men who have sex with men are still at increased risk and, unfortunately, unsafe practices seem to be on the rise again. This may be due, in part, to visible survivors whose lives are made better and prolonged by currently available treatments. One huge issue is the rapid rise of resistant strains of HIV virus currently seen in San Francisco area as well as underdeveloped nations, in which HIV is prominent in all populations.

SUBSTANCE USE Studies indicate that gay men use recreational drugs more often than the general population. We have no special immunity to their effects, and long term effects are often unknown. Discuss these practices openly and honestly with your physician.

3

DEPRESSION + ANXIETY Again, a higher incidence is found in the gay community, especially among gay men who are not comfortable coming out of the closet and in youth and adolescents. Early intervention by mental health professional who are sensitive and nonjudgmental about these issues may help. Suicide is a particularly big risk among adolescents dealing with depression and anxiety about their sexuality and other factors.

MINTMALE FEB 2010/

15

4

HEPATITIS IMMUNIZATION Serious life changing and life threatening consequences occur when one contracts Hepatitis, a sexually transmitted disease for which gay men are at high risk. Vaccines exist and are available for prevention of two out of the three varieties (Hepatitis A and B), but safe sex is the only way to be sure to avoid getting Hepatitis C at this time.

6

5 STDs

(SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES) Other STDs are rampant in the gay community, including some which can be effectively treated if discovered (such as Syphilis).

PROSTATE + TESTICULAR+ COLON CANCER Screening for these cancers is recommended at certain intervals for all men. Gay men should not avoid seeking routine preventive medical care but sometimes do because of the reluctance to disclose their sexuality to an unknown health care provider. Culturally sensitive health care is available in our community, and providers can be found by contacting the GLMA, the Center on Halsted, or the Howard Brown Center.

16

/MINTMALE FEB 2010

7

ALCOHOL Gay men as a group have a higher rate of alcohol-related health and mental health issues than the heterosexual population. There are culturally-sensitive resources, including gay-friendly AA groups, in larger communities.

8

TOBACCO Studies indicate 50% higher tobacco use by gay men than straight men. Resources are available for quitting and the health benefits of reduction or quitting completely are well-known to the population as a whole, including prevention of cancer, heart disease, and stroke.

9 FITNESS

Finding a balance is a serious problem for gays. We tend to have obsessions with body image, or unrealistic goals which cause us to over do it, or just give up. Bulimia and anorexia nervosa are significant issues. Resources found locally as well as the National Eating Disorders Association (online) may be helpful for those concerned about finding a balance.

10

ANAL PAPILLOMA Anal warts are extremely contagious and can contribute to the development of anal cancer in gay men. Treatment and prevention should both be taken seriously.

+

HOW TO GET MEDICAL CARE The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association can be reached to inquire about GLBT friendly health care providers by contacting them online at GLMA.org or by phone at 415-255-4547. The Center on Halsted offers mental health services, legal advice and referrals. Contact The Center online at www.centeronhalsted.org or by phone at 773.472.6469. The Center provides a crisis hotline that can be reached for urgent help from anywhere - the number is 773-871-CARE (773-871-2273). The Howard Brown Center can be contacted online at www.howardbrown.org or by phone at 773-388-1600. The Howard Brown Center is located at 4025 North Sheridan Road in Chicago and provides the GLBT community members primary health care, behavioral health services, STD prevention and treatment services. Services are available on a sliding scale based on income thanks to the donations of generous supporters and the work of enthusiastic volunteers.

ou’d be hard-pressed to find a topic that evokes such strong emotion as that of love. Even the most rational of persons seems to be affected by it. As evidence, our infatuation with it as a society seems hard to escape; it’s infused into the music we listen to, the deeper conversations we have, and the countless poems and writings by authors attempting to give some definition of its elusive qualities. So what is this thing called “love” and why does it seem to carry such power over us? Until recently, we’ve largely been forced to rely on history, mainly through literature and philosophy, as a way to make sense of the mystery surrounding it. However, recent research in neuropsychology has offered us a different, and perhaps more precise, glimpse at what “love” is all about.

+ THE CHEMISTRY OF LOVE Advances in science have given us our first chance to peer into the human mind and to understand the physiology of what is occurring when we experience love. Research on the brain shows that a powerful, euphoric effect occurs when we begin to explore a new love interest. When artists and poets describe love as intoxicating, they are onto something. Scientists have learned that what happens during this time is a [naturally-occurring] addictive process. More specifically, once we meet someone and start our pursuit, this contact stimulates the release of natural opiates in the brain. If you are unfamiliar with the term opiates, you may recognize them in some other forms: opium, narcotics, pain killers, heroin… is it sounding more familiar now? So, as we experience love, the brain releases these chemicals in a mad rush that causes us to have some really intense feelings. This is the phase in a new relationship when we become intensely focused on our new romance that other things take the back burner (work, friends, etc.). During this time, we are also likely to feel periods of both intense joys (about imagining a life together, getting to know them, etc.) and intense fears (if it doesn’t work out, being overly concerned with how much they like us and in making a good impression, etc.), and it’s common to feel a bit like we are not our usual self. After a period of time, though, the newness of it all begins to wear off and we start to build up a tolerance. The brain becomes used to this person that initially produced the high, resulting in a leveling off of our emotions. This is where we might start to be confused about how “into” someone we are, now that we’re not feeling so intensely. But, this often has little to do with how much of a soulmate someone is, and more to do with laws of physics

20

/MINTMALE FEB 2010

(“what goes up must come down”). We also may feel more rational at this point and less overwhelmed by the flood of emotion we felt before; however, this level-headedness is often followed by a craving in the brain to once again achieve the intense feelings we felt before. When we experience this craving it is likely for us to feel a sense of loss, especially if we have ended the relationship. At this point we may doubt our decisions about ending it or feel sadness, regret, or doubt about why it didn’t work out. Should we make it past this craving and begin to develop a more permanent relationship with a potential mate, the brain begins to rely on a few other chemicals (a replacement “drug”, if you will) in order to feel good. At this point, oxytocin and prolactin, two other chemicals in the brain, are released as we perceive comfort, safety, and security from our partner. These chemicals also provide a more durable, and long-lasting calming effect in the brain. Think of them as a longer-acting drug than that of the quick-acting rush we felt during the earlier period of “falling” in love. When we begin to get repeated messages from a partner that we can trust them to be there for us and that we are safe, these chemicals release and stay in our system longer, instilling more consistent feelings of contentment. What’s more, these chemicals actually dial-down the body’s anxiety and fears, leading us to feel both trusting of our relationship and a greater sense of selfconfidence and happiness. In addition, these chemicals serve as a kind of bridge, or replacement drug that helps ease the transition from a state of passionate love to one of companionship. This may explain why people who break-off a dating relationship often feel much more negative emotion than those who continue to date and develop a long-term relationship. It goes to show, too, that the health (or lack thereof) of your relationship can have a great deal of impact on how good you feel about yourself and how confident you are about your job, friendships, and other areas of life!

+ LOVE, ACTUALLY So, what does all this mean for us, in terms of love? It is unlikely that this knowledge will have much impact on the emotions that get stirred up for us when experiencing or being “in love”. However, we can walk away better equipped about what to expect about the process. One place to begin is to recognize that most people experience a change over time in the level of passion and intensity they feel toward a partner. Often, during the initial attraction we feel quite intensely…the phone calls and texts, the sexual tension, and the excitement of feeling attractive and wanted by someone else. But, as time goes on, we may find that our attraction changes…the newness and mystery begins to fade and, with it, the intense sexual desire we once felt. By recognizing that this is a naturally occurring process, we

can often save ourselves much worry about what it “means” that we don’t feel as passionately as we once did. Also, realizing that this change will come can help remind us that we may need to find ways to maintain a level of passion with our partner that feels satisfying. Many couples become comfortable in the security that comes with companionship, but knowing that passion is often a distinct process can help give hope to a stale relationship by encouraging partners to find ways to reignite it. Role-playing in the bedroom, learning something new about your partner, or seeing another side of them (by traveling together, getting out of your routine etc.) are only a few of the ways that can promote new feelings of intimacy and excitement between you.

calming effects common of a safe and trusting relationship do not come without effort and hard work. When we have reached a point of feeling unhappy or insecure about the connection in our relationship, we must take time to understand what is being communicated between ourselves and our partner through our actions and words. Do we send messages of safety, acceptance, and affection? Do we convey criticism, mistrust, and a lack of security? Taking time to talk with our partner about our need to feel valued and our desire to feel safe may be an important step to ensuring, both emotionally and biochemically, that we are feeling at our best. What’s love got to do with it? Absolutely everything.

We must also realize, too, that the

+ MUSIC GENTLEMAN REG by Jake Giles Listening to the latest offering from Canadian artist Reg Vermue (artistically known as Gentleman Reg), it’s hard not to feel like you’re in the backseat of a 4-door with the sun hitting your face and the windows cracked. The artist’s fifth studio record and second on his new label, Arts & Crafts, is a short and succinct collection of songs covering love and politics. Reg’s voice, while not a powerhouse, carries the melodically-strong tracks on Jet Black with a heartfelt quality present throughout the entire record. The female harmonies present on the album, especially on the first two tracks, gives Reg’s voice a boost that elevates the songs from pleasant pop to a lo-fi soulful rock. One will appreciate Reg’s artistry especially on the slower tracks, including “When Heroes Change Professions” and “Oh My God,” both of which feature reverberated instruments that anchor the broken melodies and simplistic instrumentation. The shining track on the collection is the final moment, “Rudy,” loaded with an undeniable hook, organ riffs, and the perfect amount of bite. Reg proves with Jet Black that he is one of the loudest voices in a growing population of contemporary, gay singer-songwriters.

+ MUSIC A BALLADEER With Out Front Man By Dylan Beck Pop music is being redefined by the edgy, socially-aware, supremely tuneful themed melodies of a balladeer. Creative sparks first ignited seven years ago, when a young vocalist named Marinus was auditioning new guitarists in Holland and came upon a string man and music arranger ‘with the best ears for sound’ named Erik. They joined forces with drummer Tijs and began writing hook-studded tunes demonstrating solid songwriting and storytelling skills. They needed a name for their band but couldn’t find the title that best described their uniqueness. Then Marinus remembered the word ‘balladeer’. He first heard it in a song and liked the sound of it, but even more, the figurative meaning: a bit of a drama queen. He wrote the word down in lowercase, placed a small ‘a’ in front of it, and was pleased with what he saw: a balladeer. The band was born. Though the trio keeps up with the times – “we’re on Twitter and Facebook a lot,” says Tijs - historical events play a significant part in their music. “I have a tendency to romanticize the past,” admits Marinus who writes most of the songs. “I’ve been accused of not living in the here and now, but I believe that only by studying society’s mistakes can we learn not to repeat them”. Inspired by Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell, his lyrics are personal, honest – many times with a healthy dose of melancholy. They tend to be short stories, mostly from Marinus’ own experience (many of the tracks on their debut album, Where Are You, Bambi Woods?, are inspired by Marinus’ year spent as an exchange student in Texas), but sometimes others. ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ is Jackie Kennedy’s story about the day her husband was fatally shot. ‘Oh, California’ is an ode to Joni Mitchell. Thought-provoking? Absolutely. It is infectiously essential, too. a balladeer weaves together rollicking guitar riffs, earthy percussion, and soothing harmonies with a whole bunch of smart lyrics. They are regularly compared to the likes of Counting Crows, R.E.M., Keane, and Coldplay.

“We don’t mind being compared to other bands,” explains Erik. “People do that, so do we. When someone asks us to describe our genre of music, we say pop/rock with singer/ songwriter influences.” a balladeer made their debut live appearance in late 2006 at a club in Utrecht, Holland. “We were the support act for a Dutch band and experienced one technical failure after another that evening,” remembers Tijs. “It’s not fun to be on a stage when things don’t go right,” adds Marinus. “But those performances make the best memories.” Something went right because soon after- the band received a phone call from major record label, EMI, requesting a demo cd. Unfortunately, after listening, the label felt they didn’t hear enough hit singles. The band was devastated but just for a day. They regrouped and decided to record the album themselves. When executives at EMI discovered a balladeer had tapped a top producer, a well-known bass player and arranger Robert Kirby to record the demo, they asked if they could drop by the studio. They listened, they ate, and then left. At 2:00 a.m. in the morning that same night, Marinus received a text message: “We’re gonna do it”. It took another year before they were signed. They spent the year touring and cultivating an audience, one they describe as young (a lot of students), 60% female and 40% sensitive males. They appreciate the occasional grey hair in the audience. “When it is 4:30 a.m. and you’ve got grandma on stage partying with you, you know something works,” laughs Tijs. The band’s mission is to make a beautiful oeuvre. That might sound not very rock ‘n’ roll, but then again, a balladeer isn’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. “The best moment is when a song I wrote with a broken heart turns out to be an anthem that everyone sings along to, with a beer in their hands,” says Marinus. “That’s when I truly do feel like a balladeer.”

MUSIC BITTERSWEET MIXTAPE No one to share Valentine’s Day with? Create an anti-love playlist and maybe you’ll be grateful. Kind of makes you sick, doesn’t it? You know, couples pecking each others cheek while walking their little dog, or holding hands while waiting to get into that delicious Asian-fusion place, or maybe your best friend always trying to work their beau into casual conversation. “Oh, Steve does that all the time!” Gag. For all the happily single, or perhaps bitterly so, here’s a playlist of songs to help you celebrate your unattached-ness, or revel in your loathing rather than love. I apologize ahead of time for the surplus of female artists – I tend to find they say it best when it comes to saying goodbye.

This last month turned out to be a quite an exciting month for politics. From pin-ups to prop 8 upsets, here is a rundown of what has happened in the political realm.

OBAMA’S STATE OF THE UNION Barack Obama’s first State of Union was a must see event. It was heavy on domestic policy and provided some optimistic words for the upcoming year. Obama declared jobs and economic recovery as the most important items on his 2010 agenda. He also explained the disastrous state of the nation when he took office. The President proposed a new plan to “take $30 billion of the money Wall Street banks have repaid and use it to help community banks give small businesses the credit they need to stay afloat,” along with eliminating capital gain taxes and adding more tax incentives for small and large businesses. He also spoke of success from the Recovery Act, like high speed rails, keeping teachers and police officers employed, and contracting new infrastructures. Obama resembled the candidate who ran what seems like years to go. Barack asked Republicans and Democrats to put aside run of the mill politics and take care of the Americans that got them where they are not. The State of the Union shouldn’t be taken lightly or with a pessimistic attitude; it gives us hope for our slowly recovering country. If you missed the SotU - find it on YouTube or one of the many news channels available online.

ASK, TELL, REPEAL President Obama called for the repeal of the “Don’t ask Don’t Tell” policy in his State of the Union address. Just after the State of the Union, at a Senate session on Tuesday, February 2nd, Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, said “allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do.” Secretary

of State Robert Gates responded to the suggested repeal by saying, “We have received our orders from the Commander in Chief, and we are moving forward accordingly.” While these men support the repeal, they also support a Pentagon investigation over the matter. The review could take a least a year, if not longer. Colin Powell also voiced his support of the repeal in a statement from his office. Powell noted the country has changed over the past 17 years, and polls are showing that support for a repeal of DADT is much higher in numbers. The country has lost nearly 13,000 troops since the policy was put into place and we are still waiting for serious changes to a blatantly discriminatory policy.

PIN-UP SCOTT BROWN This centerfold model pulled a major upset over the democratic party during a special election to fill the seat of the late Ted Kennedy. His election gives republicans a 41 vote to filibuster any policies democrats may propose from here on out. It also shows an upset in the country direction in what is know as one of the most “liberal” states in America. As a state senator, he says marriage is between a man and a woman, and also voted on an amendment to ban gay marriage in Massachusetts. During a Barbara Walters interview, Brown said, “I’ve always been a big tent person. On the marriage issue, it’s settled here in Massachusetts.” Brown warned his party he may not always vote within party lines. Time will tell with this sexy senator and his evolution as a national public figure. The most interesting rumor concerning Brown has the numbers 2012 in it.

HE 8 MY HEART On January 11, 2009, a historic trial began in the district court house of Northern California. Even though the trial is called Perry v. Schwarzenegger, both Schwarzenegger and

Attorney General Jerry Brown have decided not to defend Prop 8. Kristin Perry, Sandra Steir, Paul Katami and Jeffrey Zarrillo are the plaintiffs in the case, while the defense is basically ProtectMarriage.com. The trials are being recorded and shown on YouTube, which you can find linked on Mint Male’s Blog. The most comprehensive coverage is at www.prop8trialtracker. com headed by the Courage Campaign. This case is the beginning of the end of marriage inequality and it will introduce a national discussion as the case progresses to the federal level. The plaintiffs in support of marriage equality have five attorneys, including the infamous Ted Olson who defended George W. Bush in the 2000 election trial. They also have 16 witnesses compared to the defense’s one. This is bound to make amazing waves in the fight for marriage equality. Keep your ears peeled for the verdict, which should be coming in the next few weeks!

HAITI On January 12th, an earthquake that measured over 7 on the Richter Scale hit Haiti causing massive destruction and panic. Bill Clinton was recently tapped by the UN to head the rebuilding of Haiti. You can donate to the cause directly at www. clintonbushhaitifund.org. Estimated injuries amount to nearly 150,000 and the death toll is around 200,000. According to UNICEF, there were nearly 380,000 orphans before the earthquake. Now, it’s impossible to determine the increase. Haiti’s government and the U.S. are working towards creating a fair and responsible way to quickly transfer orphans into the U.S. Please beware of donating your money to unknown organizations who ‘promise’ to bring these children into the U.S. and donate to reputable agencies who have proven their presence in Haiti. Child trafficking is still rampant in the world; please don’t let these children fall victim to it. The future of Haiti is still uncertain, but a global effort is in full affect even in these hard economic times.

CHICAGO FEBRUARY ELECTIONS Illinois and Chicago politics will be in the limelight this coming fall. Barack’s old seat is up for grabs, and it looks as if young, energetic Democrat Alexi Giannoulias is gunning for it. On the other side, Republicans have high hopes with Mark Kirk, and are banking on the “Scott Brown” affect. Kirk is no Brown in the looks department, but he hopes to play off of the current high unemployment rate and the no-end-in-site health care reform bill. The governor’s seat is also hotly contested. Quinn will have a uphill battle to distance him self from disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich and the mounting Illinois deficit. Still to be determined are the republican governor nominees. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard may go into a recount with only a 400 vote difference in favor of Brady. Toni Preckwinkle, a history teacher turned alderman won the democratic Cook County President’s seat, defeating the Stroger dynasty that has reigned over Cook county for four years. Republican Roger Keats and Green Party candidate Tom Tresser will attempt to take over a democrat seat that has been held for four decades. We will continue to cover Chicago and national politics and offer more in depth profiles of candidates in coming months.

POLITICS WHERE’S THE LOVE, OBAMA? By: Gerard McGuiggan Why must we fight and struggle to be equal? Because if we quit, we lose. We’re not quitters, are we? Complacency will put the knife right into the heart of our fight to be treated as equals. It’s up to all of us to continue forging ahead for what we believe in, no matter how long and winding the road ahead may be. I’m optimistic that the road may be shorter than we think. It’s uncertain as to how long the fight will take, but it is abundantly clear that we must persevere. Allowing the mainstream homophobia to continue treating us as second class citizens is not an option. It’s reprehensible to have to fight and claw our way into our Constitution. The 14th Amendment does not have exclusionary language whereas gays are left out of the ‘equal protection’ clause. Being excluded from liberties, benefits, and protections because of who we love is just plain not gonna’ cut it, girls! The more I think about the way we’re outcasts, excluded and all but disregarded, the more motivated I get to speak out about it. Again, nowhere in our Constitution or its amendments does it say equal protection under the law, except for gays. I am no different than any other man so why am I treated like I am? In the United States, there are only 5 states that currently allow (by law) same-sex marriage. They are: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire which began allowing same-sex marriage as of January 1st, 2010. The Coquille Indian tribe in Oregon also allows same-sex marriage. Recently, voters in Maine repealed an earlier law allowing such marriages. Doing the same is California with the passage of Proposition 8. Did you even begin to imagine California putting the kibosh on same-sex marriage? Have you visited L.A. or San Francisco? HELLO!!! There are so many queens running around Hollywood and the Castro that you could throw a diamond earring and hit at least one! A state like California, with so many openly gay people, is the state that surprises me most. To make things sound even more ridiculous, on January 1st, 2010, California began recognizing same-sex marriages from other states where it is legal. They won’t allow their own, but will recognize others. It works my last gay nerve. In February 2004, San Francisco began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. In August 2008, the California Supreme Court ruled those marriages be void. Governor Shwarzenegger twice vetoed a same-sex marriage bill, once in 2005 and again in 2007. In May 2008, The California

50

/MINTMALE FEB 2010

Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriage paving the way for such marriages to being in June of the same year. On November 4th, 2008, the voters in California once voted down same-sex marriage through passage of Proposition 8. One day later on November 5th, the right to marry your same-sex partner ended. I find it interesting and troubling that a state with insurmountable debt, teetering on the brink of self destruction and bankruptcy has the time, money, and wherewithal to take on gay marriage as though it will destroy all that is good. They seem to be screaming “We must stop those gays at any cost!” Some states have not only opted to not allow or recognize same-sex marriage, they have actually banned it through amendments to their state constitutions or through statute. That’s a real slap in the face. The six states that have amended their constitutions to ban same-sex marriage are: Alaska, Arizona, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana and Tennessee. I guess they’re really against it, eh? It took a Connecticut Supreme Court order to initiate same-sex marriage in that state. What makes these folks so afraid of gays marrying? Buehler….Buehler, anyone? I’ll do my best to not support businesses in those states. If they don’t like it, they can blame it on their anti-gay legislatures. President Obama is also against same-sex marriage, yet from the other side of his mouth, he’s in favor of civil unions. In essence, the two are the same, so why not call it what it is? It’s marriage. Have you ever heard of ‘White Marriage’, ‘African-American’ marriage, or how about ‘Asian Marriage’? Of course not! Those terms are absurd. Why the hell would I accept ‘Gay Marriage’ or ‘Civil Union’? I want marriage. We’re entitled to it the same as anyone else. I pay the same taxes. I obey the same laws. I observe the same holidays. I expect the same treatment. No, I demand it! Obama has said: “I’ve stated my opposition to this. I think [Prop 8 is] unnecessary. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage. But when you start playing around with constitutions, just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person, it just seems to me that’s not what America’s about. Usually, our constitutions expand liberties, they don’t contract them.” Opponents to same-sex marriage charge that allowing gays to marry damages the family structure. They also believe that it deprives children of a mom or dad. Are they kidding? There are untold numbers of gay couples who’ve adopted children that are far better off with two moms or two dads than they would have been had they not been adopted. I guess these ignoramuses feel a child sans parents is more likely to thrive and lead a more normal life than with gay parents. God forbid a child be placed in a gay home where they can be loved, nurtured, and raised to be a productive member of society. In 1996, Bill Clinton, a democrat and adulterer, signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law. DOMA prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage. I think many of my liberal left wing friends forget that it was

Clinton. They would like to believe that DOMA is born of the religious right conservative base. It was a democratic zealot named Clinton that signed that heinous piece of paper. Remember it, especially when you attempt to always lay blame with conservatives. Yes, it was Clinton that screwed us out of the seemingly countless benefits enjoyed by ‘traditional’ married couples. You see, Clinton wanted to preserve the sanctity of marriage. HA! He can have extra-marital sex with female interns in the Oval Office, but had to be certain that ‘traditional’ marriage be held to the highest level. Because of Clinton’s help, we do not get the tax benefits that our hetero counterparts get. We cannot file jointly which could potentially save us big money. We do not get the same insurance benefits that opposite-sex married couples receive unless we are working for one the 18% of companies that offer same-sex partner benefits. We get nothing. Obama may as well have signed DOMA himself as he’s done nothing to do away with that ridiculous act. What has he done to end ‘Don’t ask, Don’t tell’? Gays can serve side by side in wars, and they can also die in wars, they just can’t let anyone know about their same-sex partner back home. While others talk openly about their wives and husbands, gays must simply sit, listen, and say nothing about their loved ones back home. Obama has broken nearly every campaign promise he’s made so it’s really no surprise that he’s done absolutely nothing for us. Let’s be clear, he has no intention whatsoever of doing anything for us. Ever. Last week in a San Francisco courtroom, Ryan Kendall, a gay man testifying for the plaintiff in the famous Proposition 8 trial taking place in San Francisco, testified about his experience of going through conversion therapy as a young man. The lawyers for those opposed to Prop 8 attempted to demonstrate to the court that homosexuality is not a choice, nor is it a learned behavior. Instead, it’s part of one’s very fabric. It is ingrained within us from the very beginning, possibly as early as conception. Opponents of same-sex marriage have maintained that homosexuality is a life choice. Not true! Kendall described being treated ‘harshly’ by his parents after discovering he was gay at age 13. They first sent him to a Christian therapist and later to the National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH). He went to NARTH from the age of 14-16 and was allowed to discontinue only after he became suicidal. When asked by attorneys if NARTH helped, he said, “ No, I was as gay as when I started” and “ I knew I was gay, just like I knew I was short and half Hispanic. I never thought those facts would change”. Shortly after the 26 year old Kendall wrapped up his testimony, Stanford University Professor Gary Segura took the stand for the plaintiff and basically mirrored Kendall’s testimony attempting to dispel any myth that homosexuality can be ‘cured’ or ‘reversed’. Segura went on to say what this writer already knew: Obama is no friend of ours. Professor Segura noted that many major

federal moves against gay rights, including the Federal Defense of Marriage Act and the military’s “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” policy, came under democratic leadership and Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Segura had some harsh words for Obama, observing that while he’s spoken out strongly in favor of gay rights, he has not taken any real steps to back same-sex marriage or change the military’s policy. When asked if he thought Obama was a political ally of the gays, Segura added: “ I think president Obama is perhaps the best illustration of an ally that can’t be counted on, an ally whose rhetoric far exceeds his actions.” At the risk of being repetitive, I’ll say it again, is this the same Obama that the gay boys campaigned for? Opened your minds, hearts and especially your wallets to? Where’s the change we can believe in? Although I agree with Professor Segura on most points, there is one I do not agree with. Segura testified that gays need special protections under the Constitution. With all due respect, professor, we do not need any special protections. We need equal protections. Saying, and more importantly, believing, that we need special status of any kind is in and of itself, admitting defeat. The whole point is to be treated equally, not ‘specially’ You know, it wasn’t too long ago when people of color were relegated to sitting in the back of the bus and to drinking from different water fountain than the whites. This is exactly the same. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now. Have we learned nothing from our past and how we once treated people? Are Americans really acting like this? It’s both saddening and maddening. I cannot even begin to understand how this could be acceptable in my America. The mere thought of this heavies my heart. What’s your vision for 2010? I hope all of you will set aside a time that allows you to think about where you are and where you’d like to be. Then spend a little more time thinking how much you’d like to close that gap. We’re close, so close I can taste it. In 2010, I’d like to see a renewed effort to overcome general homophobia. I’d like to witness true progress toward our goal of inclusion and equality. I dream of the day that there will be no gay marriage, only marriage. If the love birds getting married just happen to be two men or two women, it would raise nary an eyebrow. Yes, in the world I see, there would be no audible gasps from people when they see two people of the same sex marry, or walk down the street for that matter. No longer would we be the targets of scorn and ridicule, and we’d be openly and unconsciously accepted, unconditionally. I’m not just talking about equality in the hearts and minds of our peers and communities, but equality under the law as well. Together is the only way as there truly is strength in numbers. It’s our time. Let’s make the most of it.

a floral designer. Robert stands at 5’8” and a jam packed 200 pounds which looks to be all muscle. At the tender age of fourteen, he started his first business, party planning, and also become interested in fitness at the same time. Already a busy teen with party planning and working out, he started spending more time at a local flower shop. There he learned more about flowers and little did he know he would become a floral designer to celebrities. When he first moved to the U.S., he landed first in Orlando, Florida. His next stop was New York, and finally, he ended up in Chicago which has now become his home. That’s when he opened his floral design company Roberto G Chicago (www. robertogchicago.com), and his “lush and elaborate” designs for social events and weddings caught the eye of none other than the Queen of Chicago, Oprah Winfrey. It was his breakthrough job that put him on the map, and he started getting an incredibly influential clientele. He has designed some major events such as a fundraiser for Barack Obama, and now has clients like Jennifer Hudson, Barbara Walters, and, of course, Harpo Studios.

> BLOOMING MALE

Robert has an eye for detail, and his talent shows throughout his floral design, his body and now photo spreads. Robert has no favorite flower and loves using all of them, but tends to steer more towards monochromatic color schemes. He is very aware of the overall work and “if the color and shape is right I use it” is theway he chooses his flowers. The other side to his career, which he pursues with equal passion, is body building. “I see my body as art, and I’m always trying to make it better,” and every day he’s working hard on his masterpiece. He starts with cardio exercises in the morning, small meals throughout the day, and ends with his weight training program. He also follows a strict diet which is high in protein, low in carbs, and he stays away from sugar. He attributes his success to being well

Gonzalez found a new passion in working with the creative field of photography. He teamed up with a well known celebrity fashion photographer and together they started brainstorming and developing some beautiful photographs, incorporating Robert’s floral designs. The first shoots worked out so well, he soon was able to do a beautiful shoot with Vanessa Williams. Robert says, “I am inspired now by fashion, music, and art. I want to move more into those areas.” We can expect to see his work in more editorial spreads and more magazines in the upcoming year.

organized, planning his meals everyday, and never missing a workout. His hard work paid off when placing second in the 2006 Chicago Gay Games bodybuilding competition. He gave us here at MintMale some overall advice on how to accomplish just about anything you want “keep your mind on your goal and don’t let anyone say any different.” Robert Gonzalez,34, and his partner James Henderson,28, also have dreams of marriage, but like most of us are “waiting for the right moment”. If that moment is actually legal marriage or one that makes us at least feel some validation we shall see. They met on a dance floor three years ago and now reside together on the north side of Chicago. Some relationship advice he lent us that has worked for them is keeping in constant communication. “We don’t judge each other, we talk about anything and everything. We try to make each other happy; that is our goal in life.” Watch this year for more of Robert Gonzalez, elaborate floral designer, impeccable body builder, and maybe soon to be husband. > http://robertgonzalezmodel.com - modeling > http://robertogchicago.com - floral design and events

+ ENVIRONMINT THE WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING By Eric William Green Going Green is taking off at an alarming rate. Without noticing, we are making greener choices almost every day. Even with Valentine’s Day approaching fast, we may be more inclined to buy organic chocolates (when available) than non-organic, cards printed on recycled paper rather than virgin fiber, and locally grown flowers over ones from far away nurseries.

Still, the key words here are “When available.” If you have that someone special in your life, Valentine’s Day can be stressful when trying to find that perfect gift or plan the perfect evening. This only adds to an increasing desire for convenience and for things to happen now, now, now. We may feel like we don’t have time to spare to make sure we have the greenest February 14th possible. But still, it’s on our minds and chances are, if we can buy green, we will buy it. The good is that there are many companies singing that offer truly green products and services. Many of the companies we trust are making the switch as well. However, these companies know we thrive on convenience; they know we have no time to research, and if the label says it’s “Green”, we’re inclined to believe it. In this way, we are being sold “Green” products that are the exact opposite. This practice is called, “Greenwashing.” In today’s environment, it’s comparable to a business showing off the trees they planted to keep us from seeing the toxins they dump into the river behind them. Some of these companies that have been around for a while have the habit of being ignorantly set in their ways - you know what they say about old dogs. Even small cover-ups from these companies have big effects. Certain brands take pride in selling us cereals that contain “natural ingredients.” Nevertheless, it has been found that the corn used in these cereals is genetically engineered; a huge problem with a huge impact. This GMO (genetically modified) corn hits our environment (and our bodies) at a basic level, and is bred to kill off pests that

might eat it. If you wipe them out, it breaks more than a few links on the food chain. It also attacks your body, but that is an article for another day. Genetically engineered/modified crops are the primary suspect in the disappearance of bees in the U.S. and Germany in recent years. Dead bees might not sound like a major problem, but Albert Einstein said, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” You don’t have to look hard to find deception at the corporate level. Some of their ‘white lies’ are so big you can hardly miss them. Big name oil companies have the most to gain financially in pulling the wool over our eyes. They devote millions of dollars a year into doing just that. A certain oil company that will remain un-named (for Mint’s safety) went so far as to take out a front page ad of a well known magazine telling us that cars today have 95% fewer emission than cars in 1970. If you are looking solely at urban air pollutants that were diminished by government regulation, then there is some truth to it. However, the ad says nothing about the greenhouse gases that are putting us and our planet in a seriously tight spot. What’s worse is the oil industry is responsible for combating and weakening the Kyoto Protocol, a 1997 law designed to help the world reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A note: The United States is not a part of the Kyoto Protocol due to the past 8 years due to former White House Leadership. However, even with entities as big as the oil industry opposing the Green Movement, there is still hope. Kimberly-Clark, one of the world’s largest producers of tissue products including Kleenex, Viva, Huggies, Scott, and Cottonelle recently made a huge green switch. KC had been clear cutting the Boreal forest in northern North America to make their products. This is one of the world’s largest and oldest forests, containing hundreds of animal species and trees that are well over one hundred years old. They were leveling it to make products we flush down the toilet. Luckily, with the help of Greenpeace and concerned consumers, they decided to go greener and will start using recycled fiber as early as 2012. When you take a look at the forecast for the future of business, going green is the surest way to keep in the running. Old dogs die; there are many new green tricks for those willing to adapt, as they can’t keep doing the same old thing forever. So this Valentine’s day, when the average consumer will spend over $100 on their loved ones, keep an eye out for the companies making the biggest difference. With romance in the air, there is no better time to stare deep into to the eyes of those selling to us and ask: Where is the love?

This Valentine’s Day, Bo Dixon is announcing he’s in love and would like to get married! So, who is the lucky beau of Bo? My partner Stephen proposed to me in June of 2009. We’ve been together now for 2 years, and he’s been my best friend and encourager. The problem is you live in Atlanta – a state that doesn’t allow gay marriages. Please comment. Atlanta has a large gay community but we’re in a bubble here in Georgia. Georgia has been very slow to advance gay rights at the state level but many businesses in Georgia do have gay friendly employment policies. I’m sure that Georgia will follow the rest of the old south social politics and be late to my gay marriage rehearsal dinner. Is this why you are deciding to add your muscle into the gay marriage fight? I wanted to help amplify the battle cry. The legal challenges to gay marriage have been mounted at the state level with the exception of DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act). I believe that there is a natural tendency to believe “if it’s not happening in my home state then there is nothing I can do” but this is a huge mistake. The GLBT community needs to respond nationally to each local challenge. Why is marriage important to you? First of all, marriage grounds us with its rituals. Marriage gives us extended families and they, in turn, help hold us accountable to our promise to love, honor and obey ‘til death do us part. A marriage is a statement of commitment and love and obligation. The GLBT community has many

persons in long term relationships but these are not recognized as marriage. If same sex marriage were legal then think of how many more persons would be more inclined to stay in their relationships and work through differences instead of separating and moving on which happens so often in the GLBT community. The GLBT community has dated long enough. It’s time we got married. Is the community doing enough to fight for their rights? This is an emotional issue for me. I hear anti-gay rhetoric from organizations like the National Organization for Marriage and I’m angry. It’s acceptable to be angry but anger is not a sustainable response. Anger eventually exhausts you. I think this is why the GLBT seems to respond to the gay marriage debate but the response seems to whither. The current news about African countries like Uganda and Rwanda criminalizing same sex relationships is complete madness but there are more people blogging about porn and gossip than gay rights. We have the right to free speech in an era of unprecedented media access. We should be leading the push for gay equality around the world. We need to keep exposing the hypocrisy of the anti-gay rights groups and their leadership. We can’t afford to be silent. What do we need to do? First of all is to stay informed on gay rights issues and pending legislation. Second is to believe we will have equality but know that nobody gets equality by doing nothing. Third is that we all have to come out of the closet. Hiding who we are hurts us and empowers those that hate us.

What would you like to see all your fans do? Isn’t it time to get tough?? I would like all of my fans to be more engaged in the gay marriage debate. It’s the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. Make some noise. Contact your congressman and support those who vote for gay issues. Talk about gay marriage with others around you. Change the perceptions of those you see every day. How did you react to the “people’s veto” in Maine that wiped out the law passed by the Legislature and signed by the governor? I always expect people to be rational but sometimes they choose a different rationale. The elected government of Maine was executing a legal and rational decision to legalize same sex marriage. The voters of Maine rationalized that somehow their children were going to be harmed by this decision so they voted to overturn it. Both sides were sincere in their decision but I think if the voters of Maine had it to do over again then they would vote for same sex marriage. The anti-gay marriage forces like the National Organization for Marriage are being investigated for various contribution abuses and possible money laundering. A new same-sex marriage bill could be introduced in the Maine Legislature, passed, and signed into law by the governor, starting the process all over again -- but the majority in Maine voted against gay marriage – shouldn’t the majority vote count? A democracy in America is not a simple majority. The founding fathers of our country called pure democracy

“mob-ocracy”. The anti gay push in Maine was a mob overrunning someone else’s right to the pursuit of happiness. The elected government is by the people but it’s for all the people. It’s a distortion of American democratic principles to use a simple majority vote to take away the legal rights of a minority group. New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., are on the verge of legalizing same-sex marriage. What are you doing to make it happen? I’m calling and emailing my congressman! http://www. contactingthecongress.org/ New Jersey state representatives voted against gay marriage but the fight wont end there. The best action to take now is to email and call the NJ state representatives and tell them you want gay marriage. New York has already voted against gay marriage but the gay marriage bill will be back. The issue there according to Governor Patterson was the public vote process. Legislators didn’t know if the bill had enough support and as the “no votes” mounted more legislators felt it more politically expedient to be on the majority side. If they had met prior to the vote and seen their numbers in advance, the bill would have passed and the governor would have signed it into law. The best action to take now is to email and call the NY state representatives and tell them you want gay marriage. Washington DC is our latest victory. Earlier this year the DC city council voted to recognize same sex marriages performed elsewhere. The next logical step was to legalize same sex marriages performed in DC. The measure passed 11-2. DC is overseen by the US congress and congress has 30 days to veto the new law

if it chooses to do so. The best action to take now is to email and call the US House and Senate representatives and tell them you support gay marriage in Washington DC. The good news is same-sex marriage is legal in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont, and became legal in New Hampshire in January. But that doesn’t help you in Atlanta, Bo. Are you considering making a move? I don’t have plans to move but we do have plans to marry in another state. I believe that DOMA will be repealed and our marriage would be recognized by all states. How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day this year? Well, it looks like we will be sharing our moment with a lot of people. As the Proposition 8 trial continues in San Francisco, we are focusing on making Valentine’s week very special. The National Organization for Marriage has declared February 7th though 13th as National Marriage Week. NOM is a group founded by Mormons with a sole purpose of banning gay marriage. After an interesting breakfast conversation, Stephen and I decided it was time to do something. So we came up with a plan. We reached out to Facebook friends and fans challenging them to gather in New York, near the Today Show outdoor set and show their love for each other with kisses for our cause when the cameras are rolling. We have been

approached by two LGBT political organizations and a gay owned and operated company to help make this day a reality for all of us. FEATURED ARTIST JAMES SYLVIA by Leigh Mascianica James Sylvia, 27, is a “Jack of All Trades. This New Bedford, Massachusetts, native (who currently works in both the Boston and New York City areas) has experimented with multiple mediums throughout his artistic career. Somewhat softspoken and relatively intense in nature, James approaches his art with a unique combination of spontaneity and professionalism, resulting in a wealth of creations to keep an eye out for.

L. What are some of your preferred mediums? J. I love photography and video editing; I recently bought a panoramic camera from Lomography called the “Horizon Perfekt” - it’s a great, durable, fully mechanical 160 degree 35mm panoramic camera, but it doesn’t have a light meter built in so you’ll need one of those. I’m a Camera Assistant for films and television, so if I don’t need to shoot digital and have the opportunity to shoot film, I usually do. I like taking pictures and not seeing immediate results; the time it takes to process the negative and get some prints, or just look at the negative itself, is a welcomed step back from the immediacy of technology. I have also been building lawn furniture and bicycles lately. L. When did you start with your creative expression? J. My mom caught me expressing myself when I was 6. I used to draw a lot - my friend Brandon used to come over and we would get a long sheet of paper and draw opposing armies on either side with catapults and tanks with force-fields (anti-catapult and tank forcefields of course). We had a lot of fun. L. You have obviously dabbled in quite a bit…what is your educational background? J. I went to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for Graphic Design but I ended up taking lots of fine art classes like sculpture, 3D design, figure and structure drawing, printmaking and jewelry design. I liked it but I don’t think I was ready for college so I took a year off and built sails and tents for a company in Marion Mass. After that I went to film school at Full Sail University in Orlando and that unfortunately was the end of school for me, however I have been thinking of going back for architecture or engineering.

L. How would you describe your work process? J. When it comes to shooting, I like to storyboard and have team meetings - I view shooting as one big art project with lots of artists and technicians who know their role and execute it to the best of their ability to create one coherent piece. My photography is different; it’s quieter and more discrete. Most of the time I don’t even look through the lens because I know the tools I’m working with and rely on my instinct to capture what I think I want - also people change when they see someone aiming a camera at them. My photography is very organic and has a documentary-like feel. To me, it’s more interesting to look at a contact sheet rather than a single image. Recently I took some rolls of panoramic film to CVS to get them processed and I knew they couldn’t give me prints of the film because it was too big, but I had them scan it anyway…what I got were two cropped and sometimes overlapped frames - I loved the results. I could have never gotten this had I been shooting digital. These are the decisions and risks that pay off. L. You mentioned you are a Camera Assistant, what are some films you’ve worked on? J. I recently worked on a Will Ferrell movie called “The Other Guys”, probably due out next year. I was on the second unit shooting stunts and I think we had 14 cameras going at once on one shot! Other than that I was on “30 Rock” until the third season and I also worked on “Julie and Julia” among others.

L. What is your professional career goal? J. Travel to the Alps, ski to a location, shoot a commercial, eat some cheese fondue, drink some champagne and ski down. I love to travel.

L. Although you do not self – identify as a gay man, how do you feel your art resonates with a gay audience? J. I think good quality, forward thinking design, experimentation and happiness in ones career are things everyone can resonate to.

FEBRUARY HO WHAT IS WRITTEN IN THE STARS FOR YOU, AQUARIUS?

Shake it off, Aquarius! Although you feel stuck under a rainy cloud,

Chiron the Healer and Neptune the Dreamer join this month to remind you of the bright side of life. Get out of bed, put on a happy face, and quit bitching. A late February boost of energy is the perfect time to plant romantic and occupational seeds that are likely to bloom big-time.

Enjoy yourself, Pisces! You’re much more attractive when you let yourself have a little fun.

Pamper yourself and you’ll be more attractive than ever. Before you get too diva about it, however, remember the bigger picture. Focus on gratitude this month and what you appreciate will expand. The Sun in your sign showers you joys best when shared.

Be nice, Aries! Although the clash of idealistic Jupiter and practical Saturn leave you feeling

downtrodden, steer clear of the traps of negativity and quick fixes. Your goals may seem out of reach, but keep on truckin’. Old emotional baggage? Get over it! You wouldn’t keep an old ratty sweater, why are you holding on to that out-dated relationship?

Welcome back, Taurus! With the clouds of bad habits passing, you begin to feel like your old self. Get in touch with your strengths and work it! Toward the end of the month, caring Neptune directs your attention away from yourself. Do for others and your generosity will come back to you in ways you don’t expect. Really, Gemini! Futuristic Aquarius is forcing you to think about your goals. Are they pipe-

dreams or realistic achievements? Frustrations run high as you sort your issues out, but fight the temptation to be a mega-bitch. As a reward for handling things gracefully, new relationships flourish outside your immediate social circle.

Open up, Cancer! Channel the Madonna within and “open your heart!” Although it seems

like you’re surrounded by frigid, nasty people, opening yourself up to the possibility of new connections will bond you with people on a deeper plane. Emotions can be messy, so be sure to keep on your toes to avoid sticky situations.

OMOSCOPES Think about it, Leo! Although the planets are pulling you a dreamy fuzzy direction, you’re

smarter than that. Use your head to separate reality from the “too good to be trues” - both in the bedroom and at work. Rather than getting touchy, get fierce. Fight fire with fire and you’ll come out on top.

Team up, Virgo! Although you are hoping for an increase in sexy-time, Venus in Pisces opens open your 7th House of Partnerships. Now is the time to work on relationships that go beyond between the sheets. Look past minor flaws and connect with the whole person. Forgiveness is key this month. Dirty laundry can always be cleaned. Sparkle on, Libra! Your love-crazy ruling planet Venus shines a spotlight on you this month. You’re especially vibrant this month (or at least you’re faking it well), so use all that pizazz to your best advantage; up your social time and let your fantasies run wild. Be prepared, however, for a “Cinderella after the ball” experience late this month. Brace yourself, Scorpio! Your famously volatile emotions are running rampant this month.

Highs are really high and lows are of the “stay in bed with tissues and ice cream” variety. Although your manic antics may leave you feeling isolate, focus healing your old wounds. Pleasant surprises abound at month’s end to reward you for getting through the mess.

Get lucky, Sagittarius! The alignment of Saturn, Jupiter, and Pluto showers you with good news and positive changes this month. Your hard work has begun to pay off. Quit replaying old disappointments and focus on new beginnings especially in the workplace. And keep private matters private; publicizing your love life will only cheapen the thrill. Change it up, Capricorn! In order to keep from running into walls, you need to change your

familiar course. Repeating the same actions reap the same results - and you’re finding you’re no longer satisfied. Although an oppressive authority figure is eager to cramp your style, persist and use your words to sail on by. MINTMALE FEB 2010/
