Mint’s 2018 Production, Recorded Live. January 20 through March 16, 2025
GARSIDE’S CAREER tells the story of young Peter Garside’s soaring flight from the working class to the Labour Party’s youngest member of Parliament. Peter’s rise is propelled by his ‘silver tongue’ and an insatiable fascination with his power to persuade:
“You don’t know the glorious sensation of holding a crowd in the hollow of your hand, mastering it, doing what you like with it.”
Peter’s fiancé knows the danger of his ambition and is alarmed, but Peter’s mother ignores her concern and urges him on, “You were born to be great, however much some folk would like to keep you down.”
GARSIDE’S CAREER premiered at the Gaiety Theater in Manchester in 1914 and moved to London that year where critics applauded the author’s “true instinct for comedy.” In 1919 the play had an extended run in Boston. The Boston Globe reported that “the entire play is continuously entertaining…its strong dramatic and humorous appeal has made it an immediate success.” Mint’s production will be the New York Premiere, and we can’t find a trace of any U.K. production in the last 100 years.
“If you’ve never seen a Mint show, I can assure you that the company’s special qualities come through on video.
To be able to see such shows in your home is an amazing, luxury—one that won’t cost you a cent”

It’s “wakes week” in Hindle (a bank holiday when the mill is closed and the workers idle.) Fanny Hawthorn is relaxing at the seashore with a girlfriend when she runs into Alan Jeffcote, the mill owner’s son. Alan takes Fanny to a hotel in Wales for a few days of fun, but the fun stops when their parents find out. Of course, Alan should marry Fanny, the fathers agree, no matter that Alan is engaged to Beatrice. Must Alan do the right thing and make an honest woman of Fanny, or must he do the right thing and stand by his fiancé? HINDLE WAKES mixes questions of ethics, class, custom and morals into an effervescent fizz of comic realism.

These two plays share a common origin: both were first produced at the Gaiety Theatre in Manchester more than 100 years ago. The Gaiety was led by the remarkable Annie Horniman, a producer and patron with great taste and forward-looking vision.
