The Basics of Botox BY DAYDREAMS SPA

12

The Mint Experience

“Getting work done” is no longer the taboo secret it once was. A huge benefit to injectables is that they offer instant results, unlike surgery, which can require significant time for healing. They are also relatively painless and carry a low risk of infection or complications.

W

e can’t think of anything more exciting than self-improvement, which is why we are going to fill you in on the joy of injectables. If you’ve ever considered any type of injection, it’s always a good idea to fully understand the science behind the needle, in not so geeky science terms.

WHAT IS BOTOX, REALLY? Let’s see a show of hands if you know what Botox is, not just the basics – about treating wrinkles and migraines – there is so much more! Together – Botox & Dysport – are called neuromodulators, as they are a naturally occurring neurotoxic protein produced by Clostridium botulimun bacterium – yes that’s what we said. While it is a sort of poison, the botulimun is used by our very own, RN Nurse Practitionner. They are delivered in a podwer form, and then diluted in house, so it becomes less ‘poison’ and more powerful therapeutic and wrinkle busting superhero.

Men's rejuvenation

BRO-TOX

available at Daydreams

HOW DOES BOTOX WORK? You came to the right place, and we are happy to tell you! Once the correct amount is injected, it starts to prevent the release of neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction, causing flaccid paralysis. What? In other words, it blocks the communication between the brain, nerve and muscle. As a bonus, since the ‘freezing’ ability eventually dissipates, you and your nurse practitioner can regularly re-evaluate which dosage can provide the best result for you.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? We operate on the mantra of managing expectations. It’s your body, and you will need it for a long time to come. Your are your best advocate when it comes to your health, and it pays to be fully informed – and that is why we are here to help you and guide you to make the best choices for you. When it comes to injectables, that is. While we are on that subject, it is also important to never allow anyone – anyone – other than an experienced licenced professional inject you. We are stringent on the safety of injectables and the satisfaction of our clients.

KALI PETERSON, NURSE PRACTITIONER

Whether you are looking to treat your fine lines and wrinkles, slow down the aging process, or simply want to feel better and look refreshed, we encourage you to consider injectables as well as other treatments, as so many of our patients have.    The Mint Experience

THE ESTHETICS EXPERTS BY HUNTER PLOSZAY PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

f there’s one thing to know about Brandon entrepreneur Heather Day, it’s when she sets out to do something, she makes it a reality. In 2010, she opened Brandon’s largest salon, with 20 hair stylists, nail technicians and estheticians. In 2015, she opened H & Co Academy Hair & Nails. With education and training being top priority, she moved forward opening Western Manitoba’s first Esthetics Academy. Daydreams Esthetics Spa and H & Co Academy Esthetics are one facility with a whole approach to education and training. For one year, the H & Co students will complete double the amount of time on the clinic floor, which will ensure success after they graduate. H & Co Academy has become Manitoba’s only Accredited Advanced Esthetics Program. This all inclusive program allows students to learn all the basics plus the latest techniques including medical esthetics, IPL hair removal, photo facials, hydra facials, dermaplaning and more. This sets them apart from all graduates of other provincial programs.

The program has proved to be a valuable commodity in the esthetics industry all over Western Canada. Their students are sought after by all the top spas and Medi facilities due to the curriculum, experience and knowledge they have gained from the program. They are producing incredible students. “Our students include university graduates with degrees in nursing and business program, and range in age from 18-55,” said Heather proudly. March 2021 will be the first year the Esthetics program will have a spring intake for enrolments.

“An esthetician must think like a chemist, train like a doctor, schedule like a secretary, listen like a therapist, and make you feel like a million bucks.”

With Daydreams Spa adding on Medical Esthetics and registered massage therapy to the menu earlier this year, they take pride in servicing the budget minded clients as well. She has since become an integral part, and welcome addition of the Dream Team. All of your favorite products can be delivered to your door with the click of a button. They are exited to introduce a new Medi Team – that consists of nurse practitioners Kali Peterson and Syndey Caux, adding an exciting line up of Medi services that include injectables, and PRP and PRF therapy. WELLNESS

Discover the power of habits BY KIM RAAIJMAKERS

18

With all the “to do” lists and responsibilities that we have every day, what gets done relies a lot on the habits that we have. In Jim Clear’s book, Atomic Habits, he states “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems”. Even if you are completely focused on what you want to achieve, if you do not have the right habits in place, you will fall short.

Habits that help you, such as exercising each day you want to expand to get maximum impact. Habits that keep you from achieving your goals, such as the time spent scrolling social media, are habits that you can learn to adapt. Empower yourself in the best possible way by transforming bad habits into habits that SERVE you and move you closer to your goals each and every day.

Habits are the compound interest of personal achievement. Your habits include productivity habits, lifestyle habits and relationship habits.

“Kim, I am going to make the changes I need to make with my willpower” is something that I often hear from clients and friends. Jeez, even I have said that in the past, fully believing what I said. Willpower is only a good tool if you know how to use it AND you need to be aware that your

Alternatively, if you are looking for a better success rate in creating healthy habits, you will need to put in the work. Essentially, a habit is a behavior that you have done so often that it becomes automatic. So choose the behavior that you want to achieve, make it as easy as possible to do, repeat as often as possible and make sure that you reward yourself each time you have completed the behavior. When you start, it will take a lot of conscious effort for you to perform this habit, overtime though – it will become as natural to you as breathing – and then the results will also start flooding in!

willpower diminishes over the day. With each decision you make and with each choice you are confronted with, you use a portion of your daily quota of willpower. There is a reason why for example Barack Obama had so many similar suits - so he had one less decision to make! If you want to change your habits and create a new one AND you are determined that willpower is the way to do it, then make sure that you set out to practice that new habit first thing in the morning, when your willpower is strong. Also choose one new habit to create, continue to practice this new habit until one day you are doing the habit without even thinking of it! The Mint Experience

Finding

Happiness

During a Pandemic BY MATT BIGGEN

The global pandemic has hit hard, and its repercussions are being felt across the world. In addition to posing plenty of issues for the economy and people’s career choices, it is also making personal lives a good deal more difficult as well. Due to lockdown rules and social distancing restrictions, it is clear that a lot of people are struggling with a lack of connection. Many people are finding this time tough, and mental health issues continue to rise as people struggle to come to terms with the way life has changed in recent time. Finding happiness during a pandemic is never easy, but it’s not impossible!

20

The Mint Experience

Reassess What Matters to You One of the most positive things to come out of this pandemic is that it has caused us to reassess the way in which we live our lives, and the things that matter to us. Due to lockdown restrictions people have been spending more time at home with their families, and less time at work or out socializing. Of course, these things have their place and are important for balance in life, but we have an opportunity to refocus our family values and home life, and this is an important part of finding happiness amid stress, worry, and terrible events.

Don’t Make Money Your Driving Force It might sound a cliche, but not making money the driving force behind your life, and your decisions, is one of the best ways of being able to find happiness. When it comes to life and work, you need to focus on what makes you happy, what your interests are, and what you are passionate about. This should drive your life’s direction, and it helps you to feel less stressed and more content in your life as a result.

Connect With People Via Video Video has taken on special significance in the midst of this pandemic. Whether it’s companies having team

meetings via Zoom, or friends connecting on House Party, video chat has opened so many doors for us. It has allowed us to communicate with friends and loved ones even though we remain unable to see them in person. This constant contact and communication is one of the best ways of finding happiness at this difficult time.

Appreciate What You Have So many of us don’t appreciate what we have in life and how blessed we are, and COVID-19 has caused a lot of people to understand this better. Appreciating what you have and what you are able to do, even the little things, can make such a difference moving forward. This will help to make you a happier and more fulfilled person, and you will start to focus on what you have already rather than what everyone else has. Pursuit of happiness is something that is difficult to quantify, and it varies from individual to individual. But it is clear that these are some great ways of being able to work on trying to make your life a little happier and find that shred of positivity to hold onto when things start to get tough.

HOME for the holidays BY SHELBY WOOD

When I found these recipes, I have to say there were tears. To have in my Dad’s own writing

I feel is a keepsake. Especially hand written on a piece of paper when we live in a time where our computers and keyboards do most of that for us. It has such a special quality. It was hard to process at first when something grabs you in this way as your grief rushes in, but it quickly became beautiful in that I can keep, pass down and also share now with others as my Dad was a lover of all things festive and this time of year. I remember him always saying his writing was “chicken scratch”, as he wrote in between cursive and print. It makes me smile when I read it. It brings back good memories and who doesn’t love all these staple Christmas treats.

I think as you grow older your Christmas list is smaller and the things you really want for the holidays just can’t be bought. It’s about appreciating loved ones here, that are near or far and also ones that have past on. Taking in and cherishing experiences, versus what can fit in a box under the tree and understanding what matters most. This year, more than ever, while we are apart, we are cherishing those moments. xox Shelby

INSIDE TIPS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR HOME FOR THE GREATEST SALES POTENTIAL BY CHRIS LOW – RE/MAX

Did you know that 83% of buyers’ buyers said extra care in the home presentation made it easier for a buyer to visualize the property as a future home? And that 40% of buyers cited that the vibe of the home had a effect on most buyers view of the home. A successful set up and run through of your home will identify potential issues and alleviate them before your home hits the market. Time is important when selling your home, and keep in mind the objective is to get your home sold in the least amount of time for the best value.

GETTING UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL You have an amazing family and are proud of the memories and accomplishments you have created. Simple changes for a Stunning

2021 HOME BY MINT MARKETING

The Mint Experience

The upcoming year is all about the new, the old, and anything in between. In short, it’s about taking in everything good from the past and welcoming new trends. We’ve come up with a few but impactful interior designs to capture a home’s personality and create a visually delicious interior for the upcoming 2021.

Marine or Urban Hues. The Year 2021 brings an interesting selection of color palettes from our paint specialists and we’ve selected two fresh colors of the year, the Aegean Teal 2136-40 by Benjamin Moore and Urbane Bronze SW 7048 by Sherwin-Williams. Serene, chic, and relevant, these colors are the perfect formula to add a zing to your home. For your white walls spice it up throw pillows in pastel blue-green or a similarly coolly tinted curtain and rugs. Don’t forget to include botanical prints on these fabrics which are still in trend today. Charcoal and other gray colors emerged this year and we are seeing them to be stronger and bolder than ever. This makes the Urbane Bronze the perfect color for your kitchen cabinet or add hints of the color on your window treatments or have a charcoal colored coffee table for a start and inspiration.

Haute Bohemian Touches. For the wanderlust, this rising trend is the perfect style to kick start the new year. But first off what is Haute bohemian? If you’ve been into décor you might have come across with boho chic with its rule-breaking and exotic theme. The common thing about Haute Bohemian and Boho Chic is that they exude personality. The difference is that Haute Bohemian is a more refined version of its distant cousin making it a perfect alternative to the stark contemporary theme. So, how do you go about it? Start with your centerpieces. Fill various sizes of apothecary jars with shells from your weekend coastal getaway and add a photo or two (evidence of your getaway) to add a personal touch. Haven’t the time for travelling? You can still inject a touch of the world by getting Moroccan-inspired lamps or rugs through vintage shops and flea markets. Drape a world map printed on faux animal skin on your wall to fill in the void space or have it as a focal point in your living room.

A Maximalist’s Galore. It seems maximalist interiors are driving away our beloved minimalistic tendencies with its rich colors and prints. If you love mixing layers upon layers of prints, colors, and textures, the aesthetics of excess is a great theme for your home. Take your passion for decorative items into your home by adding delft printed sofa covers and add a floor to ceiling oriental art painting for your inspiration. Or, why not add an ottoman chair with industrial faux feather to your living room and pair it with checkered club chairs for query juxtaposition. Ultimately mix and match unusual patterns and colors together with your décor.

Norwegian Ambiance. These days, you’ll find a lot of Scandinavian-inspired interior on Instagram and Pinterest, and the reason? The Scandi style is a cozier minimalistic alternative. It’s about letting the light in and having soft wooden textures. Add a large mirror to lighten up your interior. Choose pine, maple, sap wooden statement pieces or, if you can swap some furniture around, select seats and lounges with tapered legs and soft wooden textures. Then finish off the look with a white-colored jute rug to anchor your interior look.

YOU DREAM IT, THEY BUILD IT Keller Developments is Laying the Foundation for Brandon’s Future BY HUNTER PLOSZAY PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

van Keller started out working on his family’s farm just outside of Brandon. Through the long hours and hard work, he learned a thing or two about work ethic and communication with a team. After the farm, Evan set foot in the banking industry as a corporate account manager, where he learned the importance of relationships with clients and high finance. Evan eventually ventured into the house flipping industry after a discussion with a financial advisor about the important relationship between wealth and real estate. This conversation would water the entrepreneurial roots of Evan’s true calling, and he founded Keller Developments.

E

“I think I had those entrepreneurial roots,” told Keller. “Working in the banking industry was maybe a little counter intuitive to the way I was wired. I was used to making my own decisions.” Keller Developments is fresh off a merger with Premier Builder Group, bringing Premier Commercial Builders and Westman Premier Homes into the Keller family. This merge of the companies adds another dimension of experienced developers to an already impressive stable of companies that are owned, or work hand in hand with Keller Developments. The three companies have worked together in the past and have also competed for each other’s business periodically.

Premier Builder Group was forged under the combined efforts of brothers Brent and Scott Bromley, bringing their combined experience in commercial and residential construction together under one roof. While they each developed their own specialization, they both share a passion for producing superior products for their customers. Brent, of Premier Commercial Builders, is now Senior Estimator for all projects in the combined companies. Brent works closely with the management and design teams, using his Certificate of Management in Lean Construction to keep every job running at high efficiency. He is also a Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter, and a Gold Seal Intern in Estimating. Scott, now Senior Project Manager, brings over 8 years of construction experience with Westman Premier Homes, as well as being a Red Seal Journeyman Mechanic, Certified Master Builder and Certified Master Renovator under the Manitoba Home Builder’s Association. “The merger was a great opportunity. Keller Developments has been very busy growing out our larger multi-residential side of the business and veering away from custom homes while still wanting to be in that business. So, this has now allowed us to be in every sector of the development/construction business. When you’re in rural areas like this, diversifying in different sectors of the construction industry allows us to adapt to changing market conditions.” says Keller. Westman Premier Homes’ reputation for high quality craftsmanship and customization made them the ideal candidates to fill the role of custom home experts within the Keller family. Keller is very excited to see what the group can do with their new capabilities. They have assembled a team of trades under them that allows them and their customers a high level of quality and customer service. When Keller Developments builds a project, it comes straight from the customer’s vision. With Premier Builder Group officially working under the Keller umbrella, more relationships can be built and there will be even more customer involvement. “It’s rewarding to see what we’ve accomplished. We can be creative and try new things while producing high quality products that we can be proud of for many years to come. There is an element of pride you get in construction that you might not get in other careers,” shared Keller. When companies like Keller Developments and Premier Builder Group work with a customer on a build, its important to acknowledge they are building a place that

is the customer’s home or livelihood. Technology in the construction industry has allowed their team to better ensure the relay of information and communication with the customer. The group uses software that allows customers and builders to share questions, plans, pictures and more to ensure everyone is on the same page during a build. Through Myria Designs (another company under the Keller Developments umbrella), they have the capability to make life-like 3D renders of the buildings their team drafts up. This means the customer knows exactly what their project is going to look like when it’s done.

“You dream it, we draw it. We never take 100% of the credit for what we do because it’s the client’s vision that we are building off of. We work hand in hand with the client to capture what they are imagining,” proclaimed Keller. We are living in times where the environment and the green movement is a top priority to customers. Nobody wants to leave an unnecessary footprint where they don’t have to. And Keller Developments/ Premier Builder Group are committed to using only the best products available. This includes everything from appliances, lighting, Greenstone wall panels, and lifetime warranty windows to create the best energy efficient builds possible. The three partners in the recent merger can agree that leadership among their teams is a vital part of their business. When you are dealing with an array of different builds and many workers and customers at once, communication and understanding is key. “You have to lead by example,” ensured Keller. “You don’t want to be the type of leader that doesn’t put the work and time in—you have to make sure you put in the 36

time alongside the team. Straight forward communication and honesty at all times goes a long way.” When peering into the near future of Keller Developments & Premier Builder Group, it’s intriguing to see where their vision will take them. At this point in time for Evan, it’s all about growth. “We have a lot of work lined up over the next couple years. Our biggest focus is continuing to build the team. We have great managers and leaders here and we will continue to surround ourselves with good people because our team is what makes it all possible,” shared Keller.

Phillip Emmerson Life of Healing How Phillip Emmerson transcended his disability and pain

BY HUNTER PLOSZAY PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

E

very once in a while, as a writer, there is an opportunity to cover someone who motivates you in your own life. It doesn’t happen often— but when it does—it leaves a lasting impression. The story of Phillip Emmerson is about being at the lowest point of the totem while every single negative tangible occurs. Phillip played the hand he was dealt at birth and was able to lift himself and rise above everything that was holding him down—and he’s still fighting the good fight.

the foster care system at four years old and permanently removed from his family home at eight. Phillip would eventually go on to move in and out of 12 different families just before the age of 18 when he was old enough to go out on his own. Phillip provided that some of the foster homes were just like being at home in terms of conditions and abuse.

Phillip Emmerson is 39 years old. A week after he was born, he stopped breathing and had to be revived. He was diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy because of the damages from lack of oxygen. Phillip’s cerebral palsy affects the electrical impulses from his cerebral cortex to the left side of his body—making movements in his hand, arm, and leg very difficult. Phillip was thrown into the foster system at four years old due to an abusive father who struggled with alcohol and anger issues. His father would come home from a night out drinking and Phillip would instantly try to hide—only to be beaten by his father when found. Not being able-bodied made it impossible to get away from the abuse like his older siblings. Phillips’s mother tried her best to take care of him but was abused also. His family lived on a farm and as someone with a disability, was looked at as a liability, more than as a newborn baby. Phillip was placed in The Mint Experience

43

“It’s hard as a child not having a relationship with your family and being tossed around like hand-me-down clothes,” admitted Phillip. “I struggled with alcohol and other addictions. I shouldn’t be sitting here but it’s by God’s grace that I am.” Due to Phillip’s constant drinking to mask his inner pain, he graduated from Vincent Massey High School in 2000 by the skin of his teeth. Once the diploma was in his hand, he fled to Calgary to try and become an actor. “One of my lifelong dreams is to become an actor and I went to Calgary to run away. I was there for a couple months until my wallet got stolen so I had to come back,” told Phillip. 44

The Mint Experience

Back in Manitoba, Phillip went to live in Winnipeg for 6 months but eventually ended up back in Brandon. He was living off Government Assistance and was riding his wheelchair downtown every day to find someone who would let him crash for a night or two. This was a very dark time for Phillip where drugs and alcohol still had a tight grip on his life. Phillip’s life changed when he was “connected” with Career Connections. Career Connections started Phillip on the journey of finding meaningful employment and helping him realize his true worth and potential in society. Before the actual work of finding him a career, they first had to show him his worth.

“I was always taught that I was a piece of trash. I’m super blessed because the only thing I knew how to do was drink. They had to build my confidence and made me realize that I could be a part of society and that I could someday be a light for people with disabilities and people in general. I give them credit because there were many of times I wanted to give up,” shared Phillip. While Phillip was still living in his friend’s spare bedroom and going to Career Connections, his employment counsellor showed him an article in the Brandon Sun asking people to apply as educational assistants. Phillip instantly thought there was no way he would ever be hired given his struggles in school when he was younger. “The rest is history. 18 years later I am still working for the Brandon School Division,” said Phillip proudly. “I work with students who struggle with learning and students with disabilities. Sometimes my day is working with students who struggle with life issues and we focus on those before we focus on schoolwork. Phillip relates to his students and helps them to get on the right path—just like Career Connections had previously done for him. Phillip’s 18 years of hard work and his story of redemption has gained him national notoriety from the Canadian Association for Supported Employment. They honoured him in October with the inaugural Phillip

Emmerson Award, given at the Canadian Association for Supported Employment’s Annual Conference. Not only is it an amazing feat to have an award named after you, but it’s a cherry on top to be the first recipient of such a valiant award. CASE is a national association that champions the inclusion of people with disabilities within the workplace. Phillip got to speak at the conference and was the closing keynote speaker where he got to tell his story in what he calls his “first public speaking contract”. “I didn’t believe CASE at first because usually, you have to be famous or dead to have an award named after you,” joked Phillip. “To have someone name an award after you is an honour. I’m thankful and I thank God. Next year when CASE presents The Emmerson Award to the next recipient, it may change their life.” Besides Phillip’s educational work, he is an amateur bodybuilder. He has been a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger since Grade Seven when he did a research project on the famous bodybuilder. Phillip had been officially lifting weights since he was 15 but started taking it seriously around the age of 25. Phillip went into amateur bodybuilding competitions and met one of his other heroes (ironically another Arnold). This chance encounter took place at a Second Cup Coffee Co. in Toronto when Professional Punjabi Body Builder, Anand Arnold, spotted Phillip through the coffee shop glass. “Anand said to me, ‘I follow you on social media.’ And I was blown away. We got to talk for about an hour,” said Phillip excitedly.

“To have someone name an award after you is an honour. I’m thankful and I thank God. Next year when CASE presents The Emmerson Award to the next recipient, it may change their life.” - Phillip Emmerson

The sky is the limit for Phillip and his eyes are set past the clouds when he thinks about what endeavour he is going to take on next. Not only does he want to continue his public speaking and be a motivational speaker, but he wants to write a book about his life story. And he still has those Calgary dreams of being a famous actor. His dream role would be him alongside his idol, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Phillip was gladly able to repair his relationship with his father for 6 years before his passing and still has the “best relationship right now” with his mother. “I’ve gone through tremendous healing from my past. I know my time is coming when I’m going to speak in front of thousands of people because my story and personal healing have been so amazing. I am a stubborn human being so I will continue to conquer until my very last breath,” announced Phillip.  The Mint Experience

“OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND” Understanding What myITsource’s Total Care Managed Services Can Do for Your Business BY HUNTER PLOSZAY PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

ermany, 1986—Franks Arndt’s father Erich bought him a computer. The impressive gift sparked a lifelong passion for Frank that has stayed with him ever since. Frank quickly learned how to use the computer and was intrigued by its inner workings. He decided to go into the electrical trades. German citizens have to provide one year of public service to their country. Frank decided to join the military and use his electrical knowledge. In 1992, the German Army was using Canadian Forces Base Shilo for training. Frank came to Shilo from Germany to train and work on electronic systems in the battle tanks.

G

“I got to come to Canada. As a kid I always thought about how I would love to come to Canada!”, reminisced Frank. Frank left the military at the end of 1995 because his 4-year contract was up. He stayed in Brandon and got a job working as an electrician with GT Smith Electrical. Frank started his own computer business in 1998 in a tiny office space he rented from his employer. Frank started selling/fixing computers and was soon creating an impressive customer base. Frank went on to build his own building and changed the name of his business to myITsource in 2010. This was to showcase the support side of his business rather than sales. MyITsource is leading the charge in IT support for small to medium businesses in Brandon. They use remote solutions for their IT support. This means a technician doesn’t have to be at your business to fix problems or update software. Frank calls this his Total Care Managed Services. Frank and his technicians meet with a business owner and set up programs to watch over the computer systems at said business. The program sends alerts to myITsource technicians so they can proactively fix any issue the system may be having. FRANK ARNDT

“Total Care Managed Services means we fix it before you even know somethings wrong. Customers get detailed reports of everything that was done so they know exactly what we’re doing for them.” “Businesses can’t afford to have their computer systems shut down for three or four days while service techs are fixing the computers,” explained Frank. Total Care Managed Services can be scheduled for any time, day or night, 365 days a year.

“One of the founding things about my business is that we still have support for the customer for everything we sell,” provided Frank. “I Have a great team of people working for me and we have great customers that understand that great service is valuable.”

“Total Care Managed Services means we fix it before you even know somethings wrong,” explained Frank. “Customers get detailed reports of everything that was done so they know exactly what we’re doing for them.” Total Care Managed Services also allows myITsource to track all the different businesses they are working with. This standardizes the customer base. If something goes wrong with a business’s computer system, myITsource implements a fix to all the other customer’s computer systems. This prevents the same problems from happening to other customers. Total Care Managed Services means computer problems are out of sight and out of mind for business owners. Other than IT Support and Total Care Managed Services, Frank puts a big emphasis on his employees. Frank makes sure his employees are happy at work, have good relationships with each other, and have their mental health taken care of. He also ensures his employees help out in the community. Frank gives each of his 22 employees one paid day per month to volunteer at a charity of their choice. “Our community has been really good to us so it’s important for us to give back to our community,” praised Frank. MyITsource’s focus is on their IT Support and Total Care Managed Services–but you can still go in and buy your computer, computer parts, and much more from Frank and his team.

THE LAND OF THE REAL ESTATE LAW BY HUNTER PLOSZAY PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

eal estate sales and purchases can seem intimidating to the average home buyer or business owner, but Brandon lawyer Andrea Epp is motivated to make sure her clients are as comfortable and informed as possible. Andrea Epp has been practicing law in Brandon for over 11 years, and she is set to open her new practice—Epp Law Office—in Brandon on November 1st, 2020.

R

Epp didn’t set out to become a lawyer. Her original passion was owning a business. After graduating from Assiniboine Community College with a Business Administration Diploma, she started working in the banking industry which fueled the idea of trying her hand at Real Estate Law. 50

The Mint Experience

After graduating from Law School at University of Manitoba in 2008, Epp worked in Family Law for seven years before getting into Real Estate Law. Having a banking background is an integral part of Epp knowing how to offer her clients the best expertise possible in the line of work they engage in. “I find it very important to understand the banking side of things. Banks see a different side of real estate than what a lawyer sees. I have the benefit of knowing both sides, so I make sure everyone receives the information that’s required.” Explained Epp. The other aspect that ties everything together is Epp’s business knowledge and the founding of her own law

“Brandon is a very special and incredibly friendly community where everybody knows everybody and supports each other. Connecting with people is what I love most.” - Andrea Epp office. This new endeavour has come after years of hard work and dedication in her community—plus some motivation from satisfied clients. “I have thought about having my own law office for the last few years. I finally told myself I’m going to go out and do it! I have a lot of supportive clients who believe in what I do, and they have been telling me that I should go out on my own.” Epp Law Office will handle mostly corporate and residential transactions meaning buildings and homes. One thing Epp enjoys about her work is helping first time home buyers understand the transaction process they are going through and this narrative fits with the overall vision of her new law office. “I want to create a space where my clients feel comfortable coming in and asking me their questions. I feel clients are sometimes hesitant to ask what they might think is not a good question or that they are taking up my time. It’s my job to make sure everyone is comfortable and understands the process,” related Epp. Something that speaks to the integrity, character, and work ethic of Epp is the people that will help Epp Law Office be a valuable asset to customers. Epp is starting her new law office with three employees including two that left their most recent jobs in law to work with her. They will take care of purchases, sales, corporate, and reception. Epp believes delivering sound legal advice and providing extraordinary service will lead to satisfied customers, referral work, and more hires. “I want my staff to feel welcome and have a happy workplace. My staff is the backbone of our workplace and it’s my job to make sure they are comfortable and productive,” said Epp.

Brandon is a very tight-knit network of people. One of the things that have made Epp proud is her ability to build up her contacts in the industry. She has an excellent reputation with local banks, understands realty, and knows the mortgage brokerage business. “Brandon is a very special and incredibly friendly community where everybody knows everybody and supports each other. Connecting with people is what I love most,” gleamed Epp. Outside of work, Epp likes taking various classes including pie making, Spanish, and woodworking. If you knock on her garage door there is a good chance you might catch her in the middle of whittling away on a new project. Or you might even be lucky enough to indulge in one of her famous peach pies.

Navigating your business through uncertainty BY MATT BIGGEN 64

The Mint Experience

This is a tough time for businesses across the world, and the restrictions and economic turbulence brought about by COVID-19 have caused many companies to fold. It’s not easy running a business right now, but you shouldn’t lose hope as there are things that you can do to help keep your company afloat during this time.

Many establishments are having to shut, albeit temporarily, and a lot of business owners face a battle to keep their brands alive and kicking. If you are concerned for the future, then you need to come up with ideas that are going to help you navigate your business through uncertainty. Here are some of the key hacks your company should consider to help you survive in a postCOVID world.

EVOLVE AS A BUSINESS Now is the time to be able to evolve as a business, and there are more opportunities than ever to do this. Because life is pretty much on hold right now, people are changing their views on life and what is important to them. You need to try to reflect this as a business, and this might mean changing your business model and evolving the way in which you do things.

MAKE USE OF GOVERNMENT AID Governments are offering unprecedented levels of aid and help to try to bail out businesses and institutions during this time. This includes things like business grants and furlough schemes that are helping to ease the financial burden companies face when they are unable to be operational. Make sure to use this support and aid as much as possible to try to help your business keep its head above water.

EMBRACE WORKING FROM HOME More people than ever before have been working from home during this time, and this is a trend that looks set to continue. Try to make sure you embrace remote working as much as possible for your business, as it is a great way of remaining productive and functional, while also adhering to social distancing too.

CUT OPERATIONAL COSTS Cutting the running costs of your business is one of the best ways to navigate this uncertain time. You need to free up as much money as possible to keep the business going, and this means cutting costs wherever possible. Of course, you don’t want to be making employees redundant, and government support can help with this. Focus on reducing or removing any costs that are not absolutely integral to the running of the business. You have a lot of decisions to make when it comes to helping your business navigate through the uncertainty of a global pandemic and emerge on the other side as a fully functioning and successful brand. These are some of the key things you need to keep in mind when you are trying to help your business survive and thrive during this difficult time.
