Well time certainly flies. As I hit one year as Editor of Minty, it is impossible to say how much I have learnt in a few short paragraphs, how grateful I am for the support of the industry and our readers, and how excited I am to keep growing and evolving Minty over the years to come. Looking back on 2017 fills me with utter joy. The introduction of our Minty & Co. feature has given us an amazing opportunity to work with some of the best in the business to bring new and exciting room concepts together. Our very first Minty Workshop was an absolute hit – and so much fun. Little Liberty is an interior decorating studio that specialises in creating beautiful functional kids’ rooms. Founder, Nicole Rosenberg, started the business 10 years ago and has been creating rooms for children all over the world ever since!

“I wanted to create something that was attainable for everyone, that looked amazing and bespoke, but didn’t break the budget! So I started my Minty & Co project with an online trip to IKEA and found a great basic bunk bed called the Kura. I knew I wanted to paint it and add an extra element with wallpaper and so set upon sourcing an amazing wallpaper from Sheridan with their new wallpaper range!

Being a mum herself of three children: Ruby (thirteen), Millie (eleven) and Archie (eight), Nicole knows that it is not only important to have the space looking gorgeous but it is also key to have something that is practical. Little Liberty always aims to present unique and one off designs to all of their customers and enjoys pushing the boundaries of kids’ interior decorating wherever possible.

I also wanted to add an extra element to the bunk bed and so imagined up a house structure, attached to the end of the bunk, to add in some extra drama and height to the bunk. To give the structure a little bit of softness I also added in some DIY curtains which created a gorgeous comfy reading/ hiding nook.”

Belinda Kurtz is the CEO and head designer for Petite Interior Co. With a passion for innovative storage solutions for children’s spaces, Bel’s room designs achieve the perfect balance of Pinterest worthiness and practicality.

“I’ve always adored a pastel colour scheme so it was only natural that I went straight for the pinks, mints and peaches!

She’s also the co-creator of a children’s interior design course, Kids’ Rooms 101 and has several exciting collaborations to her name. With a client base stretching the globe, Bel’s signature style remains effortlessly current, calming and cohesive.

Starting with the beautiful Sheridan wallpaper, I was lucky enough to be able to incorporate two of my collaborations the Peoni Home Crescent Bed and the Asher Desk with This Little Love. We kept the rest of the room simple and uncluttered, layering textured pastel pieces. I can see this room belonging to a little girl who needs lots of space to draw, and even has a second chair for when she has a friend come to visit.”

NORSU INTERIORS FROM CREATIVE OUTLET TO POWERHOUSE BUSINESS

A shared love of Scandinavian design brought new mothers Nat Wheeler and Kristy Sadlier together in 2011, and from there Norsu was launched – the goto resource for curated Nordic art, homewares, textiles and furniture. Their business is driven by the simple philosophy of working hard, having fun and “just keep believing that anything is possible,” says Kristy. At the time of starting the business, Nat and Kristy were also working in demanding corporate roles and the Norsu website was both a creative outlet and an avenue to deliver beautiful Scandinavian product to the Australian market. “We had no idea it would grow so quickly,” admits Kristy. “If someone had told us four years ago that we’d be sitting here today with three stores, the most amazing team, and a complete career change, we would have both fallen over laughing in disbelief.” So how did this “creative outlet” become such a powerhouse in the interiors industry? While Nat and Kristy find it difficult 30

to pinpoint specific key factors, they do attribute finding their niche early on (offering exclusive and affordable art, coupled with not taking things too seriously) as large factors in their success. Because they both kept their corporate jobs and weren’t relying on the business turning a profit, Norsu was able to grow organically in that first year. “By not putting too much pressure on it (and ourselves) to succeed, we were able to remain adaptable and change directions if required,” explains Kristy. “We learned early on that when things didn’t go according to plan, it’s okay to pivot, learn from the situation, and not become too consumed by it. We changed direction numerous times in the first 18 months before we really found our stride and place in the market.” The pair decided to forgo the traditional method of goal setting when they realised the importance of allowing flexibility to respond to opportunities that presented themselves.

“We are both very ambitious people, but we have learned that sometimes focusing too heavily on concrete goals can restrict the ability for us to explore new directions. As this industry can move fast, it has often been the ‘unplanned’ opportunities that have unexpectedly landed in our laps that have been the most fruitful and rewarding part of our journey so far,” says Kristy. “Coming from very structured corporate backgrounds, this way of operating is still quite foreign to us, yet we are getting better at letting go and trusting that things will work out for the best.”

And their advice for those teetering on the edge of entrepreneurship? “Just do it! Take the first step and dive right in. Don’t wait until everything is perfect, because you’ll waste too much time in the process. Have confidence, seek guidance from those you look up to, ask for help and support from anyone offering, and most importantly - don’t be afraid of failure! Just get out there and blaze your own trail, we promise you wont regret it!”

The journey over the last four years has been one big “pinch me moment” for the women, who say that although there are some obvious days that stand out – such as the opening of their first store; their photo shoot with The Design Chaser’s Michelle Halford; and television coverage on The Block – it’s actually the behind the scenes moments with their team that make them most proud. “To think that this little idea that we had only four years ago is now sustaining incomes for over 15 people is a very exciting thought, albeit slightly daunting at the same time!” The pair has recently opened their second store in Melbourne’s Brighton, which was again, an opportunity that unexpectedly presented itself. Nevertheless, the pair made the most of the good fortune that came across their path: “Due to the volume of customers who shop with us from the Melbourne Bayside area, we had previously discussed the possibility of opening a store one day in that location, however it was never more than an idea. Then, a couple of months ago we were approached by a friend offering a lease on her existing store.” While another Norsu site was not on the radar, it was one of the fastest and easiest decisions they have ever made; “It just seemed so right, so we went for it!” Two weeks later they were signing leases, followed by a quick renovation and the opening of the doors within six weeks from the initial discussion.

KIPPINS SETTING IMAGINATIONS ALIGHT IN THE MAGICAL WORLD OF KIPPI PHOTOGRAPHY & STYLING NICOLA BROOKE, CONCRETE HONEY

he magical world of Kippi has been bringing magic to naptime since husband and wife duo, David and Heather Rowland, launched in 2014.

Some of Heather’s favourite memories as a child were of being transported to another world as she was read to, “I also remember having a favourite toy, which made me feel so safe and happy to go to sleep,” she says. So when she had a child of her own, Heather looked for something that would capture the idea of a special story coupled with a special friend. “I couldn’t find anything that combined the two while still feeling current, so Kippins was created to bring all of this together.” Kippins reveled in a phenomenal first year - achieving sell-out status several times. Just three years later, the brand is available in more than 38 countries around the globe in over 450 retailers.

There is something about the characters that come to life with their expressions and friendly faces. “We want every baby who sees one to just want to grab their Kippin and squeeze them forever! We really love playful and whimsical kids’ design, nothing too serious. Our new collection - released in November - really reflects that quirkiness.”

I think of my own childhood and how much joy authors like Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl brought to me – creating that magic for kids is so inspirational.

“We’ve just launched in New Zealand, South Korea and the UAE and we were represented at Playtime Tokyo this year,” says Heather. “It’s pinch-me kind of stuff!”

From just Cuddle Blankies, the brand now includes a full range of muslin wraps, rattles, play mats, beanies, teething toys and The KippinTales book, a lyrical nap-time story. An important aspect that sets the brand apart is Heather’s insistence to not compromise on the ethical and sustainable aspects of production. “I wanted to know where the organic cotton was grown, and under what conditions… and then where that cotton was milled and so on. This is where our GOTS certification come in - it’s a global standard that ensures every touchpoint of the

Dave is also full-time in the business, having left his career in the aviation industry at the start of 2016 when they realized Kippins wasn’t just a side hustle any more! “When parents write to me and say that their son or daughter can’t live without their Kippin and that they read The KippinTales book every night – that’s it for me,” says Heather of her motivation. “I think of my own childhood and how much joy authors like Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl brought to me – creating that magic for kids is so inspirational. nspired by endless playtime with his own children and together with his wife Dominique, Jake Diaz began Have A Nice Day last year – handcrafting toys for unstructured playtime that stimulate imagination and encourage creativity and learning. As a father, Jake appreciates the importance and challenges of giving children the right environment to grow and develop into awesome little people. He strongly believes that carefully selected toys entice and stimulate kids as they learn about themselves and the world around them. “As a designer, I believe that great toys should adjust and grow with your child as their curiosity and skills evolve,” he says. Realising his toys were developing coordination, imagination, social skills and cognitive learning with his children’s senses fully engaged, Jake wanted to share this discovery with as many families as possible. What began as a few toys for their son quickly grew into a design studio producing a range of high quality, low-tech toys made in Australia from sustainably sourced materials. “Dom and I are passionate about sharing the benefits we see in our kids when they enjoy proper playtime. We want to help children grow stronger relationships with their siblings, parents and friends through play,” says Jake. “When our kids

are playing with our toys we see them exploring the world around them and going on adventures to unimaginable places.” Children need to build Have A Nice Day’s toys before playing with them, creating a stronger emotional connection and engaging their senses. Each toy can then be disassembled and put away or kept out for the next adventure. Jake hopes his toys will contribute to making memories, and learning and developing skills to set children up for a lifetime. “I am always being told that I am a big kid,” he admits. “Have A Nice Day is the perfect outlet for me as a big kid with the skills, knowledge and resources as an industrial designer to design and make toys and furniture that kids (and big kids!) love.” With 12 years experience designing for local manufacturing companies across multiple industries, Jake also works with small businesses and individuals to design and develop ideas into manufactured products that are solutions for their business or lifestyle. Building on this, Have A Nice Day is set to expand the services and products offered, with the ability to include their MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU

customers in the design and manufacturing processes. “Getting kids hands-on in the process of designing and making their own toys and products will inspire them to be more creative and challenge them to see more details in their world - the part I’m really passionate about,” says Jake, who believes that inviting the child’s parents or loved ones to share in this experience is an amazing way to connect with them and be inspired by their view of the world. Jake grew up making things on the weekend with his brothers and their father in the garage. It’s a tradition he has continued with his own three children, and the level of interest and excitement it brings to their lives humbles him. Family is an integral element to Have A Nice Day; while Jake is the creative, Dom has a background in bookkeeping and is an all-round amazing organiser.

remind you of the way you used to play as a child and sharing that with your kids, not only are you encouraging them to develop their imagination, but you are strengthening your bond with them and making memories which you can cherish as a family.” Jake is adamant that Have A Nice Day will never release a generic, run-of-the-mill toy, simply because of his inherent drive to challenge children’s thought processes and to develop their processing power and logic of problem solving, because “that is the way I look at the world.” Luckily, Dom is extremely supportive of this creativity and passion, and has embraced the challenge of living and working with a creative person. “The happiness of our family and being able to spend quality time together is priority number one,” Jake insists. “This is made possible by working together and creating a business heavily influenced by our kids. Have A Nice Day wouldn’t be where we are today without the combination of Dom’s level headedness and reasoning and my constant search for innovation and creativity.”

Mel Spurling and Jasmin Mefsut from Hello Little Birdie Collective worked with Krystal Dahaby from House of Harvee to plan a magical 6th birthday for Krystal’s daughter, Vienna. The design team aimed to avoid run of the mill pink and pretty fairy themes, so they instead set their sights on whimsical and boho, and the concept for Vienna’s party was born. Pampas Grass, Macramé and dreamcatchers mixed with peach and golden colours emphasised this theme. This divine event had custom made balloon colours along with wicker baskets and vintage florals. A highlight was the handmade teepee in which the guests shared stories and ate cupcakes and sweets in their tutu dress.

obe arrived in July and, since Nichola and Adem enlisted the help of Nicole Rosenberg from Little Liberty for their room, it made sense to get her to kit out the nursery as well. Nichola confirms, “I didn’t want Kobe’s nursery to be your standard type of nursery. It needed to be a room that could grow with him as he gets older – something contemporary and neutral and not based around the blue colour palette that typically represents boys.” Nicole built the concept and inspired Nichola’s and Adem’s imaginations with spotted magic. “Nicole presented some moody spotted wallpaper and I instantly fell in love!” says Nichola. “In fact, having wallpaper that most people would consider too dark for a baby’s room makes it feel cosy and warm,” she explains. With the key element a resounding yes, Nicole went ahead and designed the rest of the room around the vibe of the wallpaper.

a stealth aircraft next to the Hobbe London Rocker providing a strategic surface for placing items when baby tending yet it does so in sleek style. It is easy to see that Nicole’s furniture selection has been a careful consideration of continued relevance as Kobe gets older. Opposite the rocker is an oak-framed custom birth poster of Kobe from The Birth Poster, a minimalist take on baby memorabilia which avoids the outdating issue many items in this category face. Nichola says, “I wanted something cool and unexpected for a nursery and that is what I got”. Kobe’s nursery is a perfect balance of mature meets innocence. A timeless result. With the commanding presence of the Juju Papers Sisters of the Sun – Gunmetal on Charcoal wallpaper, the use of clear Ubabub Booksee bookshelves masterfully allow Kobe’s books to float as two lines of graphic art on the wall below the prowling panther from Lake Furniture. Nicole’s standout decision was to commission a custom made freestanding house structure to stand guard around the Danish by Design Leander cot. The result is a stylish expression of protective love. Nichola admits, “When Nicole first proposed the idea of the house structure I was unsure, but I trusted her opinion, so I let her go ahead with it. It has ended up being my favourite feature because it is unique and helps fill the space in what is a large room.” Potted Travellers Tree from Adairs is a pop of green in a sea of grey which reaches up to the beginning of the roof of the house structure. Its height is important as it juxtaposes the house structure while not being overwhelmed. The black Aperto Ali side table from GlobeWest hovers like MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU

reviously, Nichola and Adem Karafili’s children, Luca (almost eight) and Gisele (six), were lucky enough to have their own rooms. However, a new addition to the family (Kobe) meant that one of them had to give up their space for a nursery. Nichola admits, “I was concerned about putting the children together as Luca was reluctant to lose his room and move into what was Gisele’s room as he likes own space and doesn’t always want to be with his younger sister.” The boy/girl combination added another dimension to the brief with Nichola confirming, “I didn’t know how I could put them into one room while still making them both feel like it was their own space.” Nichola and Adem didn’t know where to start. Nichola says, “When it comes to my house I know exactly what I want in terms of design and I have a vision for my home. When it came to my childrens’ room I had no idea.” Recognising that some guidance would be invaluable, Nichola and Adem engaged Nicole Rosenberg from Little Liberty. Nicole was chosen because she ticked all the boxes. Nichola states, “I wanted an interior designer who had experience in children’s rooms, someone who could source interesting items, someone with creative flare to design a space that my children would love and someone who could make the room functional yet neat and tidy.”

bunk beds for Luca and Gisele’s personal spaces to a shared use Oeuf mini library space and the built-in study nook. Nicole confirms, “The bunk bed is my favourite feature as it allows Luca to have a double bed up the top giving him his own private space away from his sister. He even spends time just sitting up there during the day reading when he wants to escape.” The Vintage Illuminated G and L Marquee Letters from Restoration Hardware proudly state who is in residence and claims the room as a joint venture from now and henceforth. Adem sums it up perfectly, “It’s the feeling you get when you walk in the room with the woodland wallpaper and animals on the walls. While the list for interior design skills was long, the brief Nichola and Adem gave Nicole was short and sweet: gender neutral. “Nicole came up with the magical woodlands theme and I was sold!” Nichola exclaims. In fact, Nicole had always loved the Cole and Son Woods wallpaper and was excited to have the right room to use it in. “I also added in other textures such as wood and neutral tones of browns, cream and grey to complete the woodland theme,” Nicole explains. One such item is the ivory Natural Sheepskin Rug from Restoration Hardware which sits at the exit point from the bunk and invites one to stop and rest awhile. The deer, giraffe and zebra animal busts from Nickey Kehoe, which look down from above the window seat, enhance the feel of nature along with the faux Potted Bird of Paradise from Adairs which peeps out from Gisele’s alcove. ith Ethan being eight years old and having reached a point where his youthful hobbies and passions are clearly formulated, his mother, Kathryn Hawkes, felt it was an opportune time to start considering how to evolve the room to reflect who Ethan is now.

there is really only one wall that could accommodate a bed, so we had to plan the rest of the room around that.” With limited size and layout options, the decision to use the Perch bunk bed by Oeuf solved both dilemmas simultaneously. Kathryn acknowledges it as her favourite piece. “It has such an amazing design aesthetic and it’s really sturdy,” she says.

Kathryn explains, “Ethan loves the great outdoors and is particularly passionate about the beach, surfing, life-saving and wildlife”. “We started with the blue-grey feature wall. I first saw the colour, Arctic Grey, when Jotun Paints launched it and couldn’t wait to use it. When I showed it to Ethan, he loved it too. No regrets on the wall colour!” she confirms. The coolness of the Artic Grey feature wall partnered with three white walls and white furnishings create a sublime chillout zone for Ethan. By developing a monochromatic foundation, Kathryn has ensured any future evolutions in Ethan’s personal tastes are able to be easily incorporated and celebrated.

Kathryn Hawkes is the style maven who heads up House of Hawkes, an interior design studio and interiors/lifestyle blog, which started four years ago. Kathryn laughs and admits “I remember explaining to my first few clients that this was just a hobby, but they were undeterred and would not take no for an answer.” Luckily for Kathryn (and us) technology changed the rules on how the industry communicated with potential clients. Kathryn clarifies “Social media changed the dynamics of business – people are watching your portfolio come to life and have a clear sense of your style by the time they reach out to you.”

Real and motif cacti such as the Cactus Cushion from Mono Shop feature throughout the room, providing wonderful pops of green, daring you to play spot-the-cactus as you move around. The choice of cacti was a strategic yet thematic move as they are a durable low maintenance plant and they inspire a sense of the frontier. In developing the wildlife element Kathryn included items like the black & white cow hide rug from IKEA® and the wooden Nguni head from Vogel Design. These tie in beautifully with the intrepid explorer feel of the wall art and, of course, the cacti.

Being an optimistic mother, Kathryn has incorporated subtle yet stylish reminders for Ethan to keep things tidy, like the House Doctor Striped storage bag and the three hanging shelves. The white metal PS IKEA® cabinets continue the hint with a tough, utilitarian stance along one whole wall. The grey stripes on the bed linen from H&M Home echo the feature wall and, like little tracks, draw your eyes into the space. The Blue Jean cushion by Natti Natti with its cheeky cartoon eyes provides comedic relief by giving a playful nod to any mischief which might occur. othing quite impresses like an impeccably styled room on a modest budget, in a small space, for not just one, but two occupants. In this shining example, mum of three, Elise Grossman of @raisingyoungloves, has transformed this bedroom to meet the needs of four-year-old Peyton, as well as her latest beloved, three-month-old Willa. Avid readers of Minty may remember the gorgeous stylings of Peyton’s bedroom in the 2017 Collector’s Edition when Peyton was three-years-old. The anticipated arrival of baby Willa threw new space challenges at Elise to find a way for the family of five to fit comfortably into three bedrooms. It was a no-brainer that Peyton and Willa would be compatible roommates, a move that Elise hopes will bring them even closer together as they grow up. Now, at four, Peyton is confident and outgoing, has a kind and loving heart, and occasionally dabbles in sass – don’t we all! Her regular play involves dolls and related equipment, dressing up, Barbies and Shopkins. At three-months-old, Willa has begun to grasp and is interested in playing with toys. The wide-ranging needs and interests of Peyton and Willa added to the space challenges. Further to this, Elise was keeping to a modest budget and aimed to incorporate existing furniture into the design. So where does one start with a brief that has several challenges? For Elise, it was simply a matter of colour “I was scrolling through Instagram one night when a photo by @hel_bow popped up in my feed and I instantly fell in love with the paint colour! Her nursery was the main inspiration behind the colour pallet of the girls’ room!” Despite having a sense of the colour, it took six different paint samples and a lot of shifting around furniture and various décor to arrive at the final colour Foreshadow by Taubmans. As Elise attests “the rose gold Incy Interiors cot was the hardest to work with, as anything too vibrant or pink gave it a very girly feel, something I was trying to avoid.”

with a softer grey Numero 74 canopy that tied in with the colour scheme more subtly. The Camomile London Hanako quilt cover and pillow from Scandi Mini add a complementary colourway. Even though Elise transformed the look of this room, the beautiful vintage feel has remained with classic pieces such as the Early Settler Brittany bed and the gold rimmed oval mirror. The richness of the wall colour and other strong colour pieces are relieved with pops of vintage white in the bed head, Konges Slojd cloud mobile and Titt-tei origami hanging balls. When reflecting on her favourite feature of this room, Elise still returns to the wall colour as her most loved aspect “Every time I walk into their room I fall in love with the colour all over again, it’s exactly what I had envisioned!” This is testament to her methodical process of selecting a paint colour based on initial inspiration, followed by a thorough testing process that took into consideration existing furniture and décor. The lessons from this room are many but one that stands out is that with some careful planning, small spaces can be both beautiful and functional. Undoubtedly Peyton and Willa will thrive together in this shared bedroom now and into the future.

Part of the process of designing this shared room was parting with pieces from Peyton’s previous bedroom that no longer connected in the space. This can sometimes be counter-intuitive when pieces hold such aesthetic power in other designs. Elise found with the new paint colour that some of the brighter pieces, like the striking gold canopy that previously crowned Peyton’s bed, were too overpowering. Instead, Elise introduced “more neutral tones like, grey and white to let the wall colour stay the main feature of the room”. Ever impressive Elise Grossman has created yet another beautiful space for her middle child, two year old Xander. The recent arrival of Xander’s baby sister prompted a room reshuffle and an opportunity for Elise to put her design skills to work once more. Xander’s new bedroom is a delightful fusion of vintage and modern scandi, which gives the room a light-hearted, playful feel, a core goal of Elise’s design “I wanted the room to be very inviting and cosy, a space that was practical and had a good balance of vintage and modern.” Elise worked with existing wall colour, Grainger by Dulux, to bring existing furniture together with new décor. With neutral tones as a backdrop, Elise added a new olive green bedspread from I Love Linen and pops of red in prints and toys, such as the Wombat with Kite print by Violet Eyes, to 86

lift the room into the playful zone. These colour highlights work effortlessly with the wooden furniture, particularly the stunning vintage bed that Elise found on Gumtree! For Xander’s play interests, Elise ensured the floor space was aplenty so that train and car tracks could be easily assembled. To help Xander feel comfortable in his new room, Elise cleverly included a wooden mini name plaque and a mini initial banner, from Zilvi, along with a custom print from The Birth Poster. These special touches no doubt give Xander a strong sense of belonging. The sophisticated yet playful colour palette chosen for Xander provides plenty of room to grow, as Elise predicts “I can see him being an older child and still loving it all just as much as he does now!” ELISE GROSSMAN @raisingyoungloves

ight and shade, cool and warm, harmonious and impeccably detailed - little Harvey’s room is a monochrome masterpiece.

This nursery is the sort of room you enter and feel immediately at ease. The space is bright and airy. The monochrome colour palette with washed out whites, greys and just a hint of soft blues, combined with light timber tones and clean modern furniture, gives a beautiful Scandinavian feel to the room. But cold this nursery is not. It’s a wonderfully warm and inviting space that beckons you into its fold. In fact, the more you look around the room, the more you realise just how genius and harmonious the room feels. It’s obvious that this space is the work of a designer with a very keen eye and a great vision, a designer like Petite Interior Co. Founded in 2013 by Bel Kurtz, Petite Interior Co. has evolved into a one-stop shop for everything related to children’s design. Their team incorporates decorators, stylists, graphic designers and trades. They’ve even produced their own range of linens, beds and a children’s interior design e-course. It’s no wonder that while producing rooms like Harvey’s, with such attention to detail, that they have grown into one of the largest children’s interior design studios in the world.

It’s the details like the matching timbers of the cot, change table and picture frames blending with the rug, to the carefully selected shades of grey and soft blues in the linens, soft furnishings and plush toys coordinating seamlessly with the wall prints and wall decals, that gives the space so much class and accord. With a room like this, Harvey is sure to grow up with a great sense of style. And until then, we’re sure he’ll love cruising the streets with mum in his Budu baby carrier that even matches his room! Super stylish mum of three, Danielle, entrusted Petite Interior Co. with Harvey’s room. Danielle’s brief sought sophistication in nursery appropriate pieces that would also last into the future. It’s hardly surprising that sophistication was the order of the day. Danielle is the founder of the brand Budu. Whilst pregnant with her first son, she found a gap in the market for stylish baby products. With her background in fashion and modelling, she has brought baby products to the market that combine high end fashion aesthetic with practical design. The boat decals were the inspiration and starting point from which the design of the room grew. The pieces of the room were carefully selected to all work together. The incredible rug not only adds beautiful texture and warmth to the room, but pulls together all the colours from the deep charcoal in the carpet, to the soft blue greys and creamy loveliness of the timbers. his charming nursery was the result of powerhouse collaboration between designers Krystal Dahaby, of House of Harvee, and Ebony Pezzuto from Keeks and Chuck. In fact, it was Ebony, pregnant with her third child, who decided to expand the brains trust and enlist friend and colleague, Krystal, to help her “create a functional, gorgeous, eye catching room” for the newest addition to her family, baby Harlow. The brief was to find a style that stood apart “I really wanted to create a look that was different from things that we see every day on social media” says Ebony. With this as their motivation, Krystal and Ebony have achieved a unique look in this room, using a combination of modern Scandinavian and boho detailing. The starting point was an Amigos De Hoy rug that Ebony fell in love with and purchased prior to the collaboration. Krystal was easily convinced, recalling “We just HAD to use it as the focal point of the room and all the colours we chose were based off that.” The rug is perhaps the reason this room straddles two design styles, with the rug pattern nodding to boho while the colours emanate a more modern feel – salmon, mustard, rose and teal, backed up by several shades of grey. The scandi style is carried through in the Marius chest of drawers from Click On Furniture. The soft pink of the façade fits seamlessly with the colour scheme and the detailing in the panels ensures this standard piece of bedroom furniture actually contributes to the beautiful aesthetic. Other modern elements include the County Road ladder shelf and the Noah lounge chair from Click On Furniture.

Ebony opted for British Paints Baby Cheek on the doors. Krystal recalls that the biggest challenge designing this room was fitting all the décor together into the space to ensure each piece was able to “shine on their own” while also working together “for functionality and design.” To give this sense of balance, Krystal identified all the ‘wow’ pieces and then positioned them to avoid clumping. She then also took note of the minor design pieces to add a second layer of balance, for example, the beading elements are positioned on opposite walls and the strong mustard tones pop evenly around the room. This room’s distinctive style really shines and has certainly met Ebony’s goal. And for Krystal, the result is what every designer can only hope for - “better than we imagined!” We just know that baby Harlow will enjoy this room for many years to come. The boho details are equally strong, and a stand out piece is the oval cane bassinet accompanied by the counting sheep rocker, both from Sacred Bundle. Other more subtle boho touches are the wooden bead garland by Luxe Baby Love, and the beaded shelf by Winter and Vine. The colourful mobile from Pol and Pom incredibly hits all the colour accents perfectly. The Winnie Dot name wall mount personalises the room beautifully and carries through the light wooden tones in the basketry, cane furniture and ladder. The backdrop to this splendid nursery is Pax and Hart Bunnies wallpaper by Jimmy Cricket on the feature wall which effortlessly speaks to both scandi and boho styles. s an interior stylist and owner of Nest For Kids Interiors, Melbourne-based Linda Vlahek had an inside edge when it came to designing her daughter’s bedroom. Linda started the business two years ago, after a varied career in the travel industry and then children’s retail and visual merchandising; “I had reached a moment where I decided it was now or never and I’m so glad I took that chance,” she says, adding that she adores including the little touches that truly reflect her client’s character. However, even with her go-to standards of innovation, functionality and fun, Linda still had to please her client – nine-year-old Matilda (Tilly). “She’s such a happy little person who is so strong and independent and wise beyond her years,” explains Linda. “She’s knows her own mind and knows what she likes, and doesn’t like!” Tilly was involved in all aspects of the design, and was adamant from the beginning that she wanted to steer away from anything too “girly”. While Linda’s main requirement was for the space to have a clean, and uncluttered feel, the brief needed to also reflect Tilly’s sparky personality, and Linda started with inspiration from the ocean. “She is particularly crazy about sharks and whales and is constantly telling me facts from her shark books!” laughs Linda. A Kara Rosenlund photographic print titled The Sea was originally purchased for Linda’s own room, until Tilly fell in love with it. The colour palette stemmed from here with Linda choosing a soft grey. “I love a base palette of soft grey and white as it means you can change up the room as your child grows and their likes and dislikes change without having to change the whole room,” she says. “Changing cushions and prints and rugs can be relatively inexpensive and allows different looks and styles.”

One challenge was finding products that were feminine, without being pink. Tilly is fond of reminding her mother that she doesn’t like all the same things her mother does (“I’m always showing her décor items I find researching for other children’s room designs, and not all appeal to her even though I love them!”), and this was something Linda was very conscious of. Tilly’s favourite element of her room is the hanging chair by House of Orange, which is something she had her heart set on. It has become her special space to read and listen to music, and is made comfortable with a mix of cushions that add an element of fun. In addition to the Tortuga floor rug from Zanui, warmth and texture are introduced with the style-savvy collection of textiles, headlined by linen and velvet cushions and pillowcases, a delicious throw from Adairs Kids and several gorgeous Nana Huchy dolls. As a whole, these elements come together to create a little girl’s room that is calming, soft, and feminine without being girly. “I find myself just coming into the room to enjoy the finished result,” smiles Linda.

With the photographic print and wall colour decided on, Linda and Tilly had some fun with the statement removable wallpaper from BC Magic Wallpaper, which Linda had been “dying to use for the longest time!” Throw in the stunning Origami pendant light from Snowpuppe and the room suddenly had some magic happening. Because the space isn’t overly large, the colour scheme works to keep the look simple and streamlined, with Linda then relying on different textures for warmth. She was keen to keep the space mindful of the minimalist feel of the rest of the house, while still reflecting Tilly’s style and interests. MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU

aby Cleo’s nursery is a deliciously inviting space, with a decidedly feminine edge that her mother, Claire Aristides, adores. Parenting nine-month old Cleo and six-year old Enzo, along with running two successful jewellery businesses, Aristides Fine Jewels and Bambino Diamonds, Claire is nothing if not organised. However, she deferred to Magdalene Liacopoulos of The Bebe Style Co. to complete Cleo’s room.

As a stylist, Magdalene specialises in working with first time mothers and time-poor mothers to create a special and practical space in their home. “I have lots of clients who start a nursery and have ‘the essentials’ with the intent of getting around to finishing it. However life tends to get in the way, and The Bebe Style Co. is on-hand to help with the creative vision, sourcing, buying and installation,” she says.

“I love the Emily & Meritt clothes rack from Pottery Barn Kids,” says Magdalene. “It’s every girl’s dream to have a dedicated fashion corner in their room. With all those beautiful clothes on display, and the Ruffles Cape from Jill and Jack hanging up, it’s like her very own dress-up corner. The Belle & Co. Living white and gold suitcases that offer some extra storage finish it off perfectly!”

Named after history’s most famous Cleopatra, nine-month old Cleo is just as brave as her namesake, having recently undergone heart surgery. The happy little bub is recovering well, and settling into her brand new nursery.

Magdalene loves that everything in Cleo’s room has a purpose - to be enjoyed and to celebrate Cleo.

“Claire had put together a lovely room for Cleo but there were still some finishing touches needed for the room to feel complete,” explains Magdalene. After meeting with Claire and Cleo, it was evident to Magdalene that Claire was sentimental and thoughtful, and it was important she source items that had a connection to Cleo, her Greek heritage and the life experiences she’s had to deal with at such a young age.

A budding fashionista, Cleo already has an enviable wardrobe collection, encompassing stylish brands such as Jill & Jack, Marie Chantal, Tutu du Monde and LM Bambini. To adequately pay homage to these, Magdalene introduced an Emily & Meritt clothes rack from Pottery Barn Kids.

The calm and inviting space includes a reading area, based around Ubabub wall shelves filled with beautiful books and a statement Incy Interiors Sybilla settee and finished with a dreamy Numero 74 canopy and gold star decals for the walls. The soft furnishings add to the cosy quality of the space, with a large floor rug helping to make the room cohesive. Magdalene opted for cot bedding from Pottery Barn and strategically placed Numero 74 cushions – all in divine shades of pink, and plenty of friendly stuffed toys. The colour palette of the room is predominantly white with hints of pink and gold; “Claire, being a jeweller, isn’t afraid of mixing metals and so I was able to introduce gold and copper pieces in different areas of the room while continuing to carry through the pink and gold theme,” she says. ver feel like you’ve got your hands full? With three boys, the eldest just two, and two of them days old twins, Lucy and Jordan Lewis certainly know the feeling (quite literally). When your life is chaos, we often find calm in our surroundings. And creating ordered and cohesive spaces in their gorgeous boys’ rooms was high on the list for Jordan and Lucy. On top of their three tiny delights, the couple also juggle Jordan’s busy career as a professional Australian Rules Football player for the Melbourne Football Club. With the prospect of twins looming large Lucy decided to enlist professional help and turned to interior decorator Nicole of Little Liberty. Lucy says she has “always been in love with the rooms Nicole designs … the bold patterns, objects and colours, with a knack of making it visually pleasing, fun and relaxing”. Whilst little persuasion was required to enlist the help of a professional, Lucy was further reassured in her decision when a friend confirmed that Nicole would make the whole design process stress free, complete it within budget and, most importantly, design breathtaking rooms. Lucy knew she would be spending a lot of time in the room, and with two babies to settle she wanted the room to be peaceful and calming. So the brief was neutral, with a hint of colour. Lucy also instructed the design must include wallpaper, two cots, a change table and a comfy chair to rest her weary feet and soothe restless bubbas.

The biggest challenge of the room was fitting in the cots, change table and feeding chair to maintain practicality without foregoing design. The clever use of a change table, doubling as storage helps to achieve both a practical and beautiful space. The stunning and classic Jardan Wilfred chair is perfect for feeding the bubbas and the sculptural but functional wooden side table provides a handy space to keep essential items within reach. The use of all white furniture creates cohesion and the illusion of more space along the wall with the cots. Even with the cool colour palette, a sense of warmth and calm has been created in the room through the introduction of soft and sumptuous textures. From the custom bedheads, to the oversize but oh so inviting feeding chair and everything in between including the sheepskin, pom pom blankets, pillows and floor rug, this room oozes tranquility and *yawn* sleep…. The inspiration for this room was derived from the wallpaper suggested by Nicole. Both Jordan and Lucy loved the interest and the detail in the print and its timelessness. They say now that it is up, on all four walls, that the feeling you get when you walk in the room is magical and a much bigger impact than just one feature wall. Selecting an accent colour to accompany the soft grey of the wallpaper took more consideration. For a while the couple tossed up between a beautiful sage green colour, but finally settled on the soft blue as they loved how it popped against the wallpaper. Lucy’s favourite feature of this room is hands down the custom designed bed heads. The bed heads add a hint of colour and a beautiful protective softness to the twins’ MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU

hen Freddie (two) was a baby, Lucy tried her hand at interior design when creating his nursery. However, she quickly learnt that purchasing beautiful things doesn’t necessarily lead to beautiful spaces. Whilst Lucy purchased things she loved for Freddie’s room, it led to a mismatch of décor and she was “constantly rearranging and trying to get it right”. And to make her design choices even tricker, Lucy has since become obsessed with wallpaper. But with the overwhelming abundance of prints to choose from, Lucy didn’t back herself in being able to narrow down the range to just one. To get things right second time around, Lucy turned to interior decorator, Nicole of Little Liberty. Little Liberty specialises in producing calm, happy and fun spaces for children. Her mantra is to not be ‘afraid of colour’. And that certainly shows in this mighty cool room. To make way for new twins, big brother Freddie was treated to a new room. Lucy didn’t want to stifle Nicole’s creativity, so the brief for the room was, well, brief and practical. It needed a big boy bed, an arts/building table, and also lots of books. As a cheeky two-year-old, his room has been designed around his favourite things - trains, blocks, animals and most of all, reading!

all his own things. The table and bench seat provide a practical space for Freddie to play, read and draw and the book shelves mounted low allow easy access to all his favourite books. The mixed textures of the soft grey upholstered bedhead, leather and denim cushions and jersey bed linen in shades of grey, navy and tan all add a level of sophistication to this room that will take it from toddlerhood into the tween realm. Clean and classic timber pieces such as the bedside table and shelves help moderate the blue, and ensure the room is relevant in future years. When pushed to choose her favourite feature, Lucy cannot! “I find it really hard to choose …the wallpaper is mindblowing, the craftsmanship in the king single bed is to die for, the animal head and monkey light make the room so playful!” And Lucy is not the only massive fan. Freddie loves it. He still enters his room and says “Wow!” and says good morning and good night to the animals every day. He often goes missing and can be found sitting at his table building or on his cushion reading books. LITTLE LIBERTY www.littleliberty.com @littlelibertyrooms

In terms of aesthetics, Lucy and Jordan both knew they wanted something fun with impact. And that’s precisely what was delivered. The room was designed around the removable blue cactus watercolour wallpaper. Lucy says that when “Nicole presented the wallpaper we fell in love!”. Immediately the blue struck a chord with both Lucy and Freddie – “I really love all tones of blue – and Freddie is a real boys’ boy so we wanted to incorporate lots of blue detail and something that he wouldn’t grow out of quickly”. Nicole used greys and lots of wood detail to pare back the blue and soften the colour. But in addition to the bold impact of the playful wallpaper, it is really the details that make this room. From the cheeky monkey lamp hanging precociously beside the bed to the animal heads keeping watch over Freddie in his new big boy bed, the room is a feast for the eyes, and a delight for little Freddie. But this room is more than just gorgeous. It’s also practical for an independent boy who loves to read, play and access MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU
