A
sk just about any mamma with a little boy about clothes shopping and she’ll probably lament about the limited range of boys’ clothes available. There’s generally pink as far as the eye can see, racks and racks of tulle and glitter and pretty frills and great prints. And then shoved into the corner of the department store or children’s boutique is a couple of boys’ t-shirts adorned with cars, trains or dinosaurs. The options are hardly inspiring, edgy or current. This was the experiences of Susan Vaz, mum of two boys, who just couldn’t find cool, comfortable and quality gear for her little men that reflected them in all their glory and was trendy enough for her to love. Let’s face it, who’s not guilty of using their offspring as their own personal canvas? We pick clothes for our children that we love, that reflect our tastes and our styles. Well at least until
they’re old enough to develop their own ideas about fashion (and what an interesting stage that can be). So, Susan took the plunge and started Band of Boys, a New Zealand clothing brand, just for boys. Since 2013 Susan has been designing and creating a range of fabulous boys’ threads and accessories. Her range features free and simple shapes, along with bold colour and fabrics to create fun and modern clothes. Having two boys of her own, Susan gets boys. She knows they are “rad, curious and funny as heck and never afraid to be loud and crazy. They live in the moment, are free spirited and totally awesome”. Susan designs according to her own signature clothing style which is simple and clean. Susan tells us that she “prefers block colours over MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU 17
prints and can’t do fussy statement clothing”. She is obsessed with clothing, and loves trawling through fashion websites, watching documentaries, flipping through magazines and most of all people-watching. Susan “always notices what people are wearing and this is probably where I get most of my inspiration from – especially from people-watching on my travels”.
out until a few months later when samples arrive”. Launching and running your own clothing label is no easy feat, so by now you may get the sense that Susan is driven and likes to push herself. Having mastered the boys’ clothing domain, Susan is now launching an organic baby range and an organic kids’ range in February 2018 to continue to grow the business. She’s also looking at plugging the massive gap in the clothing range for ten – fourteen year old boys (amen!).
You have to have a lot of faith in your imagination and vision as you never really know how something is going to turn out until a few months later when samples arrive.
But it’s not only Susan’s style that features in the Band of Boys collection. What makes it so successful is that she captures the spirit of boys. One of the things Susan loves about designing for little people is that they inspire her to be more creative and to be a fun big person.
Once Susan has gathered her inspiration, the design process officially starts when she briefs her illustrators. To design her range, Susan collaborates with top illustrators and photographers across the globe to bring her ideas for each collection to life. “Sometimes the brief is quite specific when I want a really strong theme coming through all prints, and other times it is a bit looser”. Once Susan sees the finished prints from her illustrators she starts to put all of the design elements together to brief her manufacturer. One of the coolest parts of Susan’s job is consulting with her sons to pick patterns and prints for a collection each season. Usually by this stage her head is overflowing with ideas from noticing all kinds of details around her. Whilst it’s a fun process, it can also be quite mentally draining and can also be stressful “you have to have a lot of faith in your imagination and vision as you never really know how something is going to turn
Whilst running her own business can be stressful, consuming and hard work, for Susan, it is also incredibly rewarding. “The most rewarding thing is looking back and seeing what I have achieved. I then look forward and see how far I’ve got to go to get the brand to where I want it to be and it is still a long road ahead! But that is pretty exciting too!”. But beyond her own success, Susan is proud to be setting a pretty fine example for her sons, giving them the belief that they can achieve whatever they want. She also relishes the fact that she is able to involve the boys in the business to give them a full life experience that they wouldn’t get otherwise. Her oldest son Tyler accompanied her on a selling road trip throughout New Zealand’s North Island and Susan plans to take him to India next year to visit supply partners. Her youngest, Lenny, accompanies Susan to work on days where she is in the warehouse and helps to pick orders and move boxes. But perhaps the boys’ favourite part of being involved in the business is when a new season launches and Susan comes home with a huge box full of clothes!

orn from the inspiration of her two children and her love of interiors and design, Catherine Melo established Burrow & Be in 2013 with the idea of designing and screen printing for kids. Catherine confirms embarking on her new direction “was an exciting prospect, I have a Bachelor of Design and over the years I have developed a passion for creating a range of unique and stylish products that will last”. Catherine admits “having my own business is great, but it takes a lot of energy to keep it moving forward”. To help keep the brand fresh, she says, “I am happy working in collaboration with other designers”. A recent move to new premises has opened up opportunities and the future looks bright. When we met with Catherine her excitement was palpable:
WHEN DID YOUR PASSION FOR DESIGN BEGIN? “I grew up in a community where creativity was encouraged and it featured in much of what I did growing up. When I was five, I would go to the local market and sell earrings I had created from polymer clay, as a teenager I helped my family renovate a garage space that became my bedroom and studio, when my husband and I bought our own house I modernised it and more recently I have created a delightful work space and showroom in the new Burrow & Be premises”. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE? “Burrow & Be is all about stylish, contemporary kids’ bed linen, baby blankets, and soft furnishings inspired by children that have an air of sophistication with hints of tradition”.
FEATURE WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM AND HOW DO YOU STAY UP-TO-DATE ON TRENDS? “Initially, my inspiration comes from my children and the books and stories we share. I also like to keep up with colour forecasts through PANTONE® and fashion and interior sites. When you are planning so far ahead it’s important to have strong personal preferences for colour and style to provide the direction needed and embed the feel of the brand long-term”. FAVOURITE STYLE? “I love checking out many different styles but my favourites are clean, simple, modern Scandinavian styles where there is an eclectic, rich element that adds character. Without this, the style can become bland”. WHAT IS MOST REWARDING ABOUT OWNING BURROW & BE? “Running my own business means that I am able to do things my way. I am in control and doing what I love. After years of working for others and helping their businesses to grow, it is satisfying to create my own products, and see my business grow. I work hard but I have flexibility in my day to get away for school events and pick-ups”. WHAT DISTINGUISHES BURROW & BE IN THE MARKETPLACE? “We focus on style, quality and sustainability in our products, presentation and service. With people increasingly aware of the need to buy carefully, our range has been designed to meet the expectations of those who care about the environment that their children are growing up in. The fabric designs stimulate the imagination and the online styling shows how they can transform a room”. HOW LOCAL ARE YOU? “When I first started out I hand-printed everything, but as my range of
products expanded I had to outsource the larger printed items. While a lot of my product range is still made in New Zealand, with the move to using organic fabrics it has become necessary to work with some overseas companies. I ensure my overseas affiliations are all certified organic, ethical and fair trade”. WHAT’S NEXT FOR BURROW & BE? “We have just launched a new collection called Wilder Garden which is made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton muslin and this will be extended next year with some new products in our gorgeous stretchy cotton jersey and our first range of non-black and white bedding. In fact, there are lots of changes happening this year. Having moved into bigger premises (thanks to our loyal followers) it has allowed me to expand into children’s clothing while continuing to develop my classic bed linen and baby range”. WE LOVE YOUR COLLABORATION PRODUCTS! HOW DO YOU COLLABORATE ON DESIGNS? “I enjoy collaborations with other artists and designers as it can work well for both parties. A collaboration starts with an idea for a design. I give the artist a brief for the sort of illustration I want and see how their artwork can be transformed for textile use. Sometimes artists who have not done textile work bring a refreshing uniqueness to the design. I am happy to work with a range of collaborators – especially if they bring their fans and followers with them!”

ephyr and Stone is an interior design studio run by sister duo Kasia Clarke and Ania Forster. Based on the Gold Coast, Kasia and Ania divide their time between styling and design. Kasia gives us some insights into her style and flags some trends for us to look out for. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? “My style takes its cues from the pared back Nordic aesthetic, minimalism and the relaxed feel of coastal luxe. I love neutrals, monochrome and muted pastels. I always try to incorporate natural materials in my design and then add layers of texture. I go for quality over quantity and invest in well-designed pieces that will last decades rather than months or years.”
GO-TO SHOPS FOR INTERIOR AND FASHION FOR YOUR KIDS? “Country Road and Seed are my regular go-to stores though I love to support small local businesses as much as I can. Many of the items in my home are handmade in Australia. I particularly like to support talented Australian mums who are offering something a little different or something lovingly crafted.”

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION? ”I often find inspiration while scrolling through Instagram and love to follow accounts run by other creative mums. If I’m looking for something specific I head over to Pinterest. I often create Pinterest boards when designing a room.” WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’RE NOSTALGIC ABOUT THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE COME BACK IN FASHION? “Having renovated an Art Deco house in my 20’s, I now have place in my heart (and my home) for a touch of Deco. Fortunately, Art Deco never really goes out of fashion and I believe geometric patterns are set to have their moment in the spotlight.” MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU 31

ARTISAN An increase in bespoke and custom design will see consumers shy away from mass-produced items and crave personalised details such as monogramming. WABI SABI The ancient Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection is set to gain popularity. Think rusted metals, rough textures, weathered and charred timbers and fabrics with frayed edges. ESCAPISM As a direct reaction to our increasingly technological lives, homes will increasingly feature cosy nooks and private havens.

TOP COLOUR TRENDS FOR 2018
AU NATUREL Natural, earthy tones and raw textures are set to soar in popularity in the coming year as these rich hues exude warmth and are calming, especially when paired with organic materials and textures. SUBTLE TOUCHES 2018 will see muted hues such as blush, taupe, apricot and duck egg blue used on a wide scale. Combined with neutrals, these hues result in an understated and stylish aesthetic. MONOTONE A colour scheme of black, white and the full spectrum of greys will also be popular, especially when used with a pop of vibrant colour in accessories.

KASIA’S STYLE When Kasia was designing Dusty Rose’s nursery she wanted to create a space that was dreamy and feminine yet understated. The custom wall decal ‘time to bloom’ by Louie Luxe sums up Kasia’s intention to create a beautiful, nurturing space that nourishes and inspires. The Numero 74 bed drapes bring a sense of snugness which is perfect for cocooning little Dusty Rose as she sleeps peacefully in her Leander cot. “I had never seen the bed drapes used above a cot so I took a chance and I love the result as it creates a magical, whimsical feeling in the room,” she explains. “I painted a feature wall using Bauwerk Colour Lime Paint – a natural, non-toxic paint made from clays, minerals and natural pigments. Lime paint is an ideal choice for painting a child’s room and the paint is so easy to apply, even a novice can do it,” she says. The Mark Tuckey eggcup stool provides a natural timber element and completes the nursing nook with the Adairs Carter rocking chair and foot stool. At the same time Kasia was fashioning the nursery, she tackled the playroom Dusty Rose shares with her big sister Mosey. The result is stunning and, it is fair to say, the IKEA® play kitchen hack is a show-stopper. Kasia confirms, “I spent quite some time looking for the perfect kitchen for my girls’ playroom but could not find exactly what I was looking for. I really loved the IKEA® kitchen, especially the hanging utensils and the realistic stovetop with its working red lights. I kept coming back to it, and it was so affordable compared to the other kitchens I was looking at. As it did not match my playroom colour scheme, I decided to get a little creative with it, and am thrilled with the result!” The Bella Buttercup Little Place Doll Bed wonderfully mimics the House Bed, much like play mimics life, while the NoFred Mouse and Bambi and Sheep chairs bring a cute animal vibe to the room. Kasia confirms, “As a designer, I see so many amazing products every day, and I love to use them to create spaces which spark imagination and creativity. Though there is a downside to being in the know…I usually change the rooms at least weekly, partly to keep things interesting for my girls and partly because I keep buying new items and have to reshuffle their rooms just to fit the new items in!”

Create Zones

To make the space as functional as possible it helps to divide it into different zones. A quiet zone, somewhere for your child to relax and read some books or sit in comfort while others play. You can get someone handy to knock you up a simple pine daybed like this or even just add a beanbag, which allows for the space to be free if needed. This also makes the perfect spot for mum or dad when their little one insists on some adult company. The other zones are all about imaginative play. Think about what your child loves to do. We decided on a play kitchen for hours of imaginative cooking and baking as well as a dining area that often doubles as a play area. However you could do a block corner or even set up a little shop, just get creative.
Art & Personality
It could be some favourite prints or even a piece of art your child has created themselves. Scatter your chosen pieces throughout the zones and layer with cute buntings, mobiles, fairy lights and of course photos of your little cuties.
Make It Cosy
Take inspiration from your art to choose your beanbag or some cushions, even a small throw. Whatever floats your boat as long as it’s not too precious as it is a cubby after all. Add comfort under feet and define the space with a rug. I find round rugs work best in small spaces and the splashmats from Amigos de Hoy are my pick, they are a great size, hard wearing and machine washable. What more could you want!!
Add Life
Let your little one go mad foraging through the garden for flowers, herbs and feathers to add to little vases and jars. Add that essential pop of green with some plants and of course make sure you leave a little watering can so the kids can care for them. Now sit back and watch as your little one plays and creates magic

“We wanted to design a space that reflected Pia’s personal style and could be a chill-out zone to hang out with friends,” explains Magdalene, who works closely with her clients to discover their style and help create a special and practical space in their home – whether it’s a nursery, toddler or tween room update. “Pia has a strong interest in home wares and interior decoration, and her room needed to reflect that developing style,” she says. Beginning with a neutral base of walls in Dulux Whisper White, the pair first added a print by Anna Bulow from Norsu Interiors in order to set the tone and palette for the rest of the room. The tones of blush and silver in the print were a beautiful starting point, and from here Magdalene worked in a statement velvet chair, and Kip and Co. bedding in coral and pink tones. “The Mid-Century upholstered dusty pink velvet dining chair by West Elm is the perfect shade of pink and is so comfortable and inviting that it almost makes me want to sit high school again!” laughs Magdalene. Because Pia loves texture and gravitates towards a natural look, the bedhead was re-upholstered in ‘Husk in Ice’ – a linen blend by Warwick Fabrics, and the pair chose a floor lamp from Adairs that has a lovely linen weave in the shade. Bringing additional comfort and warmth to the room is The Langdon Ltd. spot leopard wool shag rug accompanied by Adairs ottomans, which sit at the foot of Pia’s bed and can be moved around for when friends are over. Taking into consideration that Pia starts high school next year, a key element to the bedroom makeover was to incorporate a functional study

hen your client is your design savvy and strong-willed 11-year-old niece, the brief can be somewhat challenging. Which is why the serene, Scandinavian-inspired sanctuary that Magdalene Liacopoulos of The Bebe Style Co. created for Pia Katsabaris is a feat of stylish co-operation.
area that will see her through the rest of her schooling. “I wanted her desk area to also be a source of inspiration, where she can be pinning inspiration images on the AL + EM pinboard, and use the H&G Designs shelf with the suede strap detail to house all her collectables.” Not to mention the covetable, sophisticated leather desk accessories from The Daily Edited. Another requirement of the bedroom makeover was to find a home for the replaced furniture. As Pia’s mother Vicky is a passionate supporter of Global Sisters, she contacted them and they helped to find a good home for the furniture. Global Sisters support women producers to start their own business creating beautiful, marketable products with a heart and a story. Their product offering is focused on three values – handmade, ethical and luxe, and the makers may have backgrounds as refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, Indigenous women, single mothers and women who have experienced domestic violence. (It is worth noting that Global Sisters don’t usually accept furniture donations – the best way to support the cause is through the retail store, The Market by Global Sisters). With Magdalene’s design experience and Pia’s evidently inherited good taste (!) the pair have transformed Pia’s childhood bedroom into a stylish room that will no doubt become her refuge as she faces down her teenage years. “Pia is not your average 11-year old,” admits Magdalene. “She has a strong vision and knows what she likes and doesn’t like, and I was definitely put to task for this room update!” And it was obviously a task she was well equipped for. t is never a surprise to hear how far some parents go to create the perfect room for their little one. Emma Bishop is no exception, going to extraordinary lengths to achieve the look she wanted for Baylie’s nursery. “My husband, James, is forever telling me not to put holes in the walls by moving pictures around or re-painting. To a mum who loves re-decorating this is hard to work with. So I thought outside the box. Baylie’s feature wall is painted in a soft grey and to create the beautiful herringbone wall pattern I used white washi tape which is removable. At 30 something weeks pregnant I painstakingly climbed up and down a ladder hand placing every line in order to create this. The best thing about using this tape is when I want to change up the room all I have to do is pull the tape away and my walls are not damaged” explains Emma. The effort has certainly paid off. Baylie’s feature wall is a triumph. The Silver Shadow paint by Wattyl is the perfect backdrop to Emma’s handiwork, and the herringbone bang on trend. The addition of the Bunny Print from Synplus _ Etsy a fitting choice. The feature sets the tone for the entire room right from the start – a calming environment for their little boy, Baylie. Emma describes Baylie as a “beautiful brown eyed bubby who is coming into his own personality. His cheeky little grin lets him get away with most things. He adores his two older brothers Luca and Noah and together they create mischief.” Inspired by Pinterest, Emma knew she wanted something “light, bright, fresh and airy”. A style that can grow with Baylie over the years. The floor to ceiling linen curtains an inspired choice
as they are stylish and let the light flood in. The addition of natural timber toys, the spash of blue and the Willow Soy mobile bring a Scandi vibe that hits the brief perfectly. Personal touches are scattered throughout the room. The Zero Print Petite print is a beautiful reminder of Baylie’s early days and the Mini Mana Co. name banner a sweet touch. The shelf of toys above the change mat are both beautifully selected and styled, and very practical for nappy change distractions. The greenery brings life and further brightens the room. Emma’s design philosophy is simple. “Just have fun when designing and creating your room, and enjoy every moment. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and just give it a go, if it doesn’t work that’s ok. Try something else until you fall in love with the space.” When asked her favourite feature of the room, Emma doesn’t hesitate. “My favourite feature of Baylie’s nursery is all the natural light that filters in. When I am feeding him sitting in his little rocking chair together, the amount of light that streams through makes me happy. Baylie’s room is a place where he is making memories. A place that I created for him.”

ittle Abigail joined the world in September and shares her birthday (give or take a few years) with the stylist of her room, Kristy Young from Minnie and Me Interiors. Kristy confirms the brief she received from Abigail’s parents, Emma and Andrew, was for their “little darling to have the cutest possible room to come home to.” Emma and Andrew concurred on the desired furnishings, including “an attractive yet practical nursing chair, beautiful artwork, book shelves, a gorgeous rug and decals or wallpaper for the feature wall”. However, Kristy says “there was slight divergence when it came to the overall theme with Emma calling for pretty, floral and girly and Andrew wanting Collingwood FC to feature.” Kristy laughingly admits it was a short and sharp “sorry Andrew, but no way José!” With Emma’s theme winning the draw, she gave Kristy images of nurseries that she loved. Kristy says Emma particularly liked “Lillya Grace’s nursery, daughter of Monika’s Hibbs’ (@ monikahibbs), which featured a gorgeous pink, green and white floral wallpaper.” Emma also wanted to incorporate paper flowers into the space. Emma explains, “the rest of the house had recently been painted in grey with white trims and I wanted the colour palette for Abigail’s room to feature pastels and grey with touches of gold.” Emma and Andrew loved Kristy’s very first design board, only making slight changes. Emma sighs, “we knew it was perfect for our little girl.” The central feature of the room is a custom watercolour floral removable wallpaper by Minnie and Me Interiors. Emma confirms “as soon as we laid eyes on this feminine, timeless and elegant print, we just had to have it and, bonus, it matched my colour palette request perfectly.” The large-scale blooms on the wallpaper firmly
establish the comforting yet stylish cuteness of the room. The floral continues to bloom on the opposite wall with the Jumbo crepe pink paper flowers from Pottery barn kids and the flower features in the whimsical Flutterby print from One Sonny Day. The beautiful Victorian Dollhouse by Whimsy Woods, with a little replica of Abigail’s room inside, Kristy says “is simply amazing and every little girl’s dream.” The Georgia cot by Incy Interiors offers a hint of nostalgia with its handsomely wrought detail and curved edges. The Numero 74 cotton Canopy from Leo and Bella softly wraps the Titttei Origame mobile creating a focal point for Abigail. The Maddison rocking chair from Life of Style Australia Emma declares, “not only looks fabulous but is really comfy to nurse Abigail in.” The Allure Rose rug by Unitex International brings some rose hued warmth and defines the functional zone in the room. As the room is tiny, Emma acknowledges, “we had to compromise on using my French provincial dresser as we couldn’t get it to fit so we settled on a white change table with two open shelves instead.” With the room real estate in high demand, the Bow book shelf by Mitahli Designs is a clever addition, allowing some storage without stealing too much room space. reating a beautiful room for a tween is a hard task on its own. Creating one that your tween loves and embraces is even harder. Linda Vlahek, Nest for Kids Interiors, tackled this head-on from the start: “I made sure Aiden was involved in the design process of his room right from the start of our house renovation, after all it’s his room and he has to love spending time there” explains Linda. Nest For Kids Interiors offers affordable interior design for children’s spaces. After a varied career in the travel industry followed by children’s retail and visual merchandising, Linda took the plunge and started Nest For Kids Interiors. “I love designing a room that makes a child or teen’s face light up. Putting those little extra touches in a room that reflect who they are is so important so I always take the time to find out as much as I can about each person I design a room for.” Aiden’s room was no exception. Eleven-year-old basketball lover, Aiden, is a confident and cheeky boy with a sharp sense of humour and a quick wit. Linda’s aim was to create a room with a calming feel for her very active son. “Aiden chose the grey and navy colour scheme and I added the touches of tan leather and light timber to add warmth to the room. His main request: not too many cushions on his bed!” says Linda. The Adairs Princeton Coverlet in navy with grey stitching was the first purchase that cemented the look and feel for the room. Having just renovated the entire house, it was important to Linda that Aiden’s room had continuity with the rest of the home, but that it would still feel like a kid’s room. This was achieved by carrying through the greys, white
and timber that feature throughout the home. The Jessie bedside table by Mocka adorned with the Honey Honey Creations Timber and Leather Board effortlessly tie the home together. The addition of navy adds a touch of sophistication for Aiden as he enters his teen years. Earthy tones and textures such as the Amigos de Hoy tan leather floor pad, the Muskhane Lumbini rug and the Hip Kids Frankie bed, work together to warm up the space. The biggest challenge Linda faced was balancing the style – not too young and not too mature for her tween. “A space that Aiden could grow into and one that is easily adaptable by changing the soft furnishings as his tastes change.” This was achieved with the neutral base – Dulux Lexicon quarter strength for the painted walls and the Geo removable wallpaper from BC Magic Wallpaper for the feature wall. . The neutral base is a perfect backdrop for updating cushions, quilt covers and prints as Aiden moves from tween to teen. The desk nook featuring the Freedom Furniture Brock Desk and the Hunting for George Soda Pop print is another example of clever planning to last the years. The luxury of built-in wardrobes allowed Linda to keep the room beautifully clean with just a few Country Road storage baskets on display. Practical, in harmony with the rest of the home, and a space that can grow and change with Aiden, Linda has certainly ticked all of the boxes for a room that will stand the test of time. ometimes the design trajectory of a room follows an unexpected route. In this case, the design was inspired by prints that were originally purchased for the children’s bedroom, but through changes made later on, the prints were moved to another space. Nevertheless, the influence of the prints remains abundantly clear. This is a great example of how good design is all about inspiration, growth, evolution, themes and colour. Cat Matthews, who works in paediatrics during the day is mum of Alice and little brother Ted, and designer of their shared bedroom. Cat has always had a great eye for photography, and after renovating their home, found the confidence to expand her own repertoire of skills to include interior and product styling, which she now does on the side. Drawing on her background in paediatrics, she works a lot with children’s interiors and clothing brands, but also loves styling homes too. When Cat found out that Alice was going to be a big sister, she started to think about designing a bedroom that Alice could share comfortably with her new brother, that they’d both love. The biggest challenge of the room was styling it to suit both a 6-year-old girl and an 18-month-old boy. This posed challenges in terms of colour palette and themes, and the age gap meant that they both have different needs in terms of toys, play space, and practicalities. Cat explains “I really wanted the room to suit them both, without being so neutral that it was boring”. Initial inspiration for the room was drawn from the beautiful and whimsical Mrs Mighetto prints from the ‘Among the Clouds’ range. Cat bought two of the prints for the room as they “work so well across genders and ages that I knew they would be perfect for my big girl and baby boy”. The beloved prints have now found their way into the playroom, but their lovely whimsy and Scandi feel
is still strongly present in the room. To overcome design challenges, Cat went with fairly neutral bones. From Cat’s point of view, a neutral base was considered essential, so she could regularly change things up (hence the decision to replace the original inspirational prints). Cat also wanted continuity with the modern Scandi style through their home. Grey was the logical choice. The wall colour is Dulux Favoured in half strength. Cat says “it’s such a beautiful grey, and I love how it throws a lilac colour in some lights. I get lots of questions on Instagram about the wall colour!” Warmth was brought into the room with the timber of the drawers and Ted’s cot, and also with all the different textures, from beautiful merino blankets and chunky knits to delicate feather garlands, soft floor rugs and inviting Little Connoisseur floor cushions. The space needed to be practical with plenty of storage and all the essentials like a cot and a change table for Ted, but also needed to be pretty and dreamy enough for Alice with a place to snuggle up and read stories. Besides the room’s essentials, Cat faced the added challenge of making sure that the room was “Ted-friendly”, so she incorporated out of reach shelving where Alice could safely display her treasures. Cat’s favourite feature of the room is the white canopy by Alice’s bed where she loves to sit and read and hide away, when some quiet time is in order. Ted also loves to play peekaboo with his big sis, while she is hiding in there. Cat loves the beautiful prints that currently feature in the room “they have the scandi style that I love, but with an Australian twist, featuring a Koala and Joey character”. The custom-made garland is also a favourite, it has now been added to Harlow & Hunters range, and has been named Alice in Wonderland, after little Alice. n unconventional, but very logical approach was taken to the design of this room. The theme was set after a briefing session between the designer and the bedroom’s lucky inhabitant, toddler Landon. Whilst making complete sense, it’s an approach that is usually not taken for fear, on behalf of mum and dad, that the end result will be a tacky, mismatched, licensed mess! But consummate professional and owner, and founder of L’adorabelle, specialises in ‘sophisticated children’s interiors’, so under her watchful eye a stylish space that is loved by both mum, dad and toddler is delivered. Landon, together with mum and dad, Ruth and Bevan, make a vibrant and busy family. Their days are filled with sporting activities and socialising. In the words of Chaz “they are a family that never sits down”. Being time poor, the family decided to engage a designer to take control of the room and execute it for them. When you put a toddler in charge of room design, there is always the risk that the end result could scream Disney or Pixar, and for designer Chaz, this was certainly the biggest challenge. Whilst mum and dad mostly left the creative direction up to Landon, they did insist on a vibrant baby boy’s room that will transform into a toddler room, with the simple update of a bed. And it was at their direction that Chaz was to sit with Landon to devise the theme for the room. After getting acquainted, Chaz soon recognised Landon’s passion for aeroplanes, and that blue was a favourite colour. So, with the theme “all things flight’ and the boss colour set, Chaz got to work.
The starting point for the room was the aspiring walls Disney aeroplanes wallpaper, subtle enough for the most discerning designer, but Disney enough for the most wobbly of toddlers. A signature style of L’adorabelle design is the inclusion of high quality custom pieces. It’s no surprise then, that Chaz’s favourite piece of the room is the custom-made aeroplane shelf that was designed specifically for this room and complements the wallpaper perfectly. The soft blues in the wallpaper, paired with the inviting soft grey lounge by Freedom Furniture, soft grey curtains and all white cot along with custom made throw pillows create a light, friendly and welcoming feeling in the room, which Chaz says is a “direct reflection of this family’s’ personality”. Her philosophy is that the personality of your clients should shine through your design. Vibrancy was added to the room through the pops of red in the wallpaper and the inclusion of beautiful but useful toys that can be ‘broomed’ and ‘zoomed’ all over the room. A lovely whimsical quality that fits with the flight theme was introduced through the hot air balloons hanging over Landon’s bed and Bashful Bunny by Seed Heritage. The end result is a vibrant, but peaceful space, where weary Landon can unwind, play, love and sleep after his busy and social family days.

ome wise soul once said that “being different is one of the most beautiful things on earth”.
And in this room, that regally awaits the arrival of a precious new bubba, being different certainly makes it beautiful. From the outset, almost new mum Laura, has had a very strong sense of what she wants. And for Laura, her resolute views on her style reflect the quirks and complexities of her personality - successful businesswoman/ owner, secret hippy and risk-taking race car driver. Her selfproclaimed style is “classic, yet unique”. And it is certainly energising to see such unique ideas being incorporated into a nursery. With a baby looming and therefore a momentous deadline to finalise the very important nursery, Laura turned to Nest Design Studio. She’d been following Belinda, the owner of Nest Design Studio, for a long time before falling pregnant. Once pregnant, Laura realised that she had limited time to put her ideas into action, and that she needed help with the practicalities. Nest Design Studio was chosen because of their “tiny special details, unique looks and lux feel”. Essential requirements for the room was for it to be functional, unique, gender neutral, with a grown-up look that was also suitable for a baby, but not kid-like. Laura herself admits that she was “very specific about some items and colours I wanted in the room”. From details such as no traditional baby colours and the inclusion of tan leather, gold and emerald green down to the requirements for the room to be timeless and beautiful, with a bit of an edge. The brief was certainly specific. But rather than run a mile, Belinda took Laura’s ideas and together they created a beautiful, unique, lux nursery. Before Belinda was introduced to the project, Laura had already decided on a few must-have
inclusions. Laura had been eyeing off the Incy Interiors gold cot for a while prior to starting the room. Laura is also a wallpaper lover, so the beautiful and dramatic wallpaper mural from Rebel Walls was a must-have to create a stunning focal point for the room. Laura loves how it “brings the space to life and frames the theme”. Tan leather was introduced into the room to add to the lux sophisticated feel, whilst softening the gold. The Olli Ella change basket was selected as opposed to the traditional cushion types to bring texture and build upon the unconventional approach. With all these elements that Laura had her heart set on it made sense that a jungle type theme would be the best option. The favourite part of the room for Laura is the custom made Hobbe rocking chair “it’s such a statement piece and I love that we have a one of a kind in our home”. But there are also two treasured pictures hanging in the room. One is a painting of poppy flowers in memory of baby Poppy who Laura and Brett lost in miscarriage earlier in the year. The second is a frame with the words “you don’t understand (how much we love you)” which has the double meaning of being an expression of love for their new baby as well as being a memory of Brett trying to woo Laura back after their ill-fated teenage dating experience. But what Laura loves most is that the room is unique and will serve all of her babies over the next few years. Whilst it was hard for Laura to let go, and trust Belinda, the room turned out exactly how she dreamt it would. And unconventionally, Laura says “I knew I was on the right track with the room when my girlfriends laughed at me when I told them what colours I wanted… so I figured I was on the right track as it confirmed it would be unique”.
