F
or the last few years Dong-Maria Le has been running Baby Donkie on the side of her full-time job, in risk management and internal auditing, while also raising kids. It has been a challenge wearing so many hats, and with the fourth addition to her clan only a few months old, she decided to embrace change. “This year I’ll be a SAHM/WAHM only working on Baby Donkie (as opposed to also undertaking full time work in addition to Baby Donkie, as was the case previously)” explains Dong-Maria. When we got to talking about how she manages it all, Dong-Maria laughs and admits “It’s a huge juggling act! We make it work like most other families do but you must remember to ask for, and accept help.” She then leans over and confides “you have to look after yourself – like a cup of tea and a good Netflix series when the
kids have gone to bed!” Dong-Maria has also made sure that some jobs get outsourced and to use technology to her advantage, “We have a cleaner who comes fortnightly and use online grocery shopping – so much easier than taking all the kids along!” she declares. With her fourth child, she has been lucky as her parents who live interstate have come up to help for a few months which she notes, “has been really amazing.” Help aside, with a seven-seatercar-sized family, it is essential to run a family calendar and keep to a routine, “I need to write down what everyone is doing and when, otherwise I’d forget!” she says smiling. We had a chat with Dong-Maria over a cuppa to hear about Baby Donkie. TELL US ABOUT BABY DONKIE – WHAT YOU DO, WHAT YOU SPECIALISE IN AND YOUR
BUSINESS ETHOS? “At Baby Donkie, you will find a gorgeous collection of children’s clothing, accessories, decor and toys carefully curated for the style-conscious shopper. Located in Sydney, we source our range both globally and in our own backyard, focussing on designers and brands that fit in with our style. We love pops of colour, playful prints, original design, timeless interiors, minimalist style and beautiful yet functional toys.” HOW DID BABY DONKIE COME TO BE? “I love shopping, looking for new labels (especially design-led pieces) while hunting down a good bargain. When I had my two boys, I found myself buying quite a bit online, both in Australia and overseas. I started selling a few things on eBay to see if others liked what I liked – and they did! My intention was to start a business that would eventually allow me to spend more time at home with my kids.”

I’d also like to develop a physical retail offer either through pop-up stores or perhaps a bricks and mortar store down the track sometime.”

WHERE DID YOUR PASSION FOR BABY DONKIE COME FROM? “Given my career background, Baby Donkie has been my creative outlet. I have been involved in every aspect from concept design for the brand and website, to sourcing products, packing orders and establishing a social media presence. I love every part of it! I still get a thrill each time an order is made and love interacting with my customers to see how they have styled a room or how their child wore an outfit on a special day.” HOW DO YOU CREATE THE IMAGERY WE SEE FEATURED? “It is important to know what defines your own style because that will determine the products you will be drawn to, and the imagery flows from there. GROW YOUR SOCIAL FOLLOWING Be authentic and genuine via your content, with how you communicate and throughout the relationships you form. Be consistent with the feel of the brands you choose, the look and frequency of your target market interactions and the content you present. Always remember that in the social media sphere you are what you post! Share and collaborate! Do not be afraid to support and share with like-minded people and businesses through things like tagging the image creator online or getting involved in giveaways and photo shoots. Most of all you need to believe in what you are selling!

GET THE BRANDS YOU DREAM OF Have a professional website and established social media channels. Suppliers review these to find information about potential distributors and how they fit with their brand. Be clear on how the new brand/supplier will fit in with your current range as suppliers are looking for long-term relationships not just the supply of one-off products (particularly for online only retailers). Try to meet the supplier or their agent in person by attending trade shows/markets/exhibitions as these types of forums provide a great opportunity for the supplier to learn about your store.Â

ecently established Social Enterprise, Kudu and Mimi, is the brain child of sisters Tahni and Sarah, who founded the organisation based on their passion for helping children with chronic health conditions in resource poor communities. These entrepreneurial sisters were driven by their appetite for business and creative projects from an early age. ‘It started from our younger days when we used to make jewellery to sell to our friends. Looking back on that time I laugh (also a little embarrassed) about the things we were making and how daggy they were’ says Tahni. But the passion never left them, leading them to their shared vision – Kudu and Mimi. Ethical practice is paramount for Kudu and Mimi, and care is taken to ensure that the business follows ethical practices every step of the way – from initial design to completed production.
Not only do we want to create unique, high quality products, but we also want to give back to charity. The real driving force behind Kudu and Mimi is the desire Sarah and Tahni share for helping others. ‘Not only do we want to create unique, high quality products, but we also want to give back to charity, so in purchasing from Kudu and Mimi, our chosen children’s charities will benefit. Together with her sister-in-law, style savvy Kate launched Kate & Kate with a small collection of cotton blankets in 2013. The brand now produces two seasonal collections per year, which also include linen throws, napkins and tea towels, along with cotton and linen cushions, luxurious bath sheets, hand towels and beach towels, all with the signature Kate & Kate clean lines and geometric shapes. As one would expect, the impeccable design nous synonymous with the Kate & Kate brand has transferred to Kate’s home, and her children’s rooms are no exception. Modern and eclectic, the bedrooms include lovely recycled pieces along with high quality multi-functional furniture that has easily transitioned from nursery to bedroom. “Both rooms have really developed organically,” says Kate. “I didn’t ever really have a clear ‘concept’ for either… it was more about collecting pieces and then building a look around them over time.” A key element to her design approach is using more mature artwork than those typically found in children’s spaces; “I’ve been able to anchor everything around them from day dot.” Kate says that investment pieces can create strong bones to any kids’ room, and bringing in texture will add warmth and depth. She is also quick to point out it is crucial to incorporate your child’s personality, “Include items they love and let them have some say in their space.” Having recently worked with Briar Stanley from Sunday Collector to upgrade the carpet in the kids’ rooms, Kate also introduced some new furniture pieces – key of which was clothes storage. “I generally just move a few bits and pieces around a couple of times a year,” she says. “The kids love their rooms and get a lot of joy out of displaying their treasures, so I try not to interfere too much. Of course, I am constantly changing
the linen and bedding situation though – I can’t help myself!”

ituated in Sydney’s leafy Eastern suburbs, the Pascoe Squires abode is home to Kate, husband Tony Squires, and their children, six-year old Harry and four-year old Helena.
The space that hosts the children’s bedrooms was originally one large, dark attic, and Kate admits dividing the space into two rooms was a challenge, especially as they wanted to include dormer windows to allow as much natural light as possible. Even after the DA was obtained for the renovation, the angles and long nature of the rooms proved tricky from a decorating viewpoint, dictating the size and type of furniture that could be used.
“As my kids grow, it’s important that they can retreat to their rooms with their friends – it’s their little piece of our home and I love that they feel some ownership over their spaces,” says Kate, who believes it is important to allow ‘space’ for play. “Their rooms are not huge, but just leaving a little bit of unfurnished, un-styled space means they can use their imaginations to play whatever they choose.” Playtime for Harry and Helena certainly became more fun after the renovation, with the inclusion of a ‘secret tunnel’ between the rooms. “This was a stroke of genius from our builders! The kids’ rooms are in the attic of our house, so when we cut off the roofline to insert dormer windows, it left a nice little cavity between the rooms. We put doors in each room so the kids can ‘secretly’ travel between the two spaces. Recently, they’ve been inviting our neighbours over to watch movies in there. It’s dark, quiet and away from adults – the perfect kids’ retreat.” And while the tunnel may be the children’s favourite aspect of the space, Kate loves the natural light that fills the rooms. “The light in the rooms is just gorgeous – it dances on the angles created by the roofline and makes them feel incredibly welcoming. The other thing is the tin roof - they are certainly the best rooms in the house for enjoying a rain storm!”

KATE’S FAVES The stripy artwork with wooden animal from Ici Et Lá – I purchased this before Harry was born and I love it now as much as I did when I found it. Oeuf Bunk Beds from Kido Store – the best purchase, super high quality and never seem to age. I can see Harry sleeping on the top bunk with a desk underneath when he gets older (and Helena moves back into her room – for now, they love sleeping in the same room!) Pin Board – Briar Stanley put me onto these and Harry loves pinning all of his bits and pieces from school on here. Mexican puppets – I bought the wolf and Mini Mouse back from Mexico years before I had children, so I love that they have found a home in Harry’s room. Postcard collection – Harry loves collecting these as much as I do and we continue to add to this wall as things catch our eye.

KATE’S FAVES Framed posters – I purchased these online around the time Helena was born and was looking for an excuse to frame and display them. They’re a bit left of field and I love that, although quite fun and colourful, they are not traditional children’s artwork. You’re A Good Egg Postcard – I couldn’t believe my luck when I found this. Helena has always been called Egg, so it was a match made in heaven. This one is a keeper. Shadow Box – I was obsessed with organising my miniatures when I was young and it gives me so much joy to see Helena doing the same thing. Lots of the things in there are from my childhood, so it’s extra cool. Mini Suitcases – Helena has a thing for mini suitcases and I find it totally adorable. Her favourite game is to pack them up and pretend to go on a holiday, a game she calls ‘trips’. I love them more for their functionality, as they hide all those tiny bits and pieces away so easily! Kate & Kate: Carnival Collection – They look so good in her room! I love a more mature look in kids’ rooms and this is just one example, where it doesn’t have to be all baby pink and white… you can mix up textures and colours to give it some ‘oomph’ while still keeping it mini friendly.

ounders of Bella Buttercup, Jaimee Masters and Chloe Blanchette, are best friends and business partners. Like many things, they, together, both relocated from New Zealand to Melbourne to pursue their dream of opening their business together. The launch of Bella Buttercup was serendipitous – in tandem, Jaimee was discussing an initial idea she had to develop a product, and Chloe was developing a business plan for a very different venture. rowing up I always dreamed of having a Playhouse. Back in the day, not many children had one. One summer my dream came true. I built one myself along with some friends. Although it was far from perfect architecturally, it was perfect for play. A playhouse does not need to be big, nor picture perfect. The idea is having a place for your little ones to call Home where they can act out what they see and learn in their everyday life. A common misconception is that a playhouse is just another toy. In many ways it is, but truly it is a childhood journey of beautiful memories, development and achievements. A playhouse is the ultimate idea of what imaginative play should be. Imaginative Play is essential for every child’s enjoyment of childhood and the development of social, emotional, intellectual and physical skills. When I design a playhouse, the goal is to create a world that encourages open-ended play and that fosters a well-rounded development by putting active engagement in front of the passive entertainment we see too much in today’s children. The way of doing this is to create different zones of activities, just like your own house. If you can achieve three zones in your playhouse, play can go on for hours and hours; ENTRY An entry where the children learn about the activities and gestures that comes along with an arrival and departure. Install some hooks where
they can hang their little jackets, knits or bags, a little shelf for hats, sun glasses, play phones and keys, maybe a shoe rack for their boots or sandals, and a little mirror (depending on the age of kids using the space) where they can make sure their face is clean after a meal;). KITCHEN The kitchen is in my eyes the most important zone. A stove and a sink is a great investment as a lot of focus in their everyday life is around making food, eating and cleaning up. The kitchen teaches the kids so many practical skills like cooperation, communication and organisation. Arrange food toys in different containers, cabinets, drawers, and on shelves to promote discovery, sorting and organization. Try to keep them at arm’s reach, to avoid climbing accidents. DINING ROOM/LIVING ROOM The dining room/living room is where the idea of activities comes to play. Invest in a dining/play table where they can comfortably sit an eat the meals and treats they have cooked and baked, have a real lunch or simply enjoy a game or draw something beautiful. Storage is key in here. Make sure you plan for a little cabinet, toy chest or a built-in bench where activity toys not part of the kitchen setup can be stored. If you like to use your playhouse year long, installing a light fixture above the table is worth the extra money.

t times, it seems the ‘tweens’ are the forgotten members of the style and design world… buying clothes can be impossible, their identity can be lost somewhere between child and adult, and their rooms are often stuck in no man’s land. As three of Moran and Gill’s girls approached this age of transition, they enlisted Nicole Rosenberg of Little Liberty to transform their rooms – ‘take their kid room to a teen room – sophisticated, grown up, a little edgy and totally put together’ explains Moran. SO WHERE DOES THE INTERIOR DESIGNER START? “Because all three rooms are in the same house and we were working with three girls, I wanted them to have a common thread. For all rooms we used greys, pink and metallics but still managed to make each room have its own unique personality” explains Nicole. To achieve this, Nicole sent each sister artwork to choose from. Once they made their choices, Nicole was able to put together a complementary colour palette to run through all three rooms. Drawing this inspiration from the art chosen by
the girls ensured each of their personalities was reflected in their rooms. When presented with the proposed rooms, Moran responded “The colour palette looked amazing! I loved the gold, metallic elements plus the greenery and planters to really mix it up. Nicole asked if I’d be happy to paint Yasmin’s room dark and I was more than happy to take the risk”. With this as a base, Nicole was able to create these three tween retreats – all beautifully comfortable and cosy, practical and useable, and absolutely stunning to boot! When asked about the best parts of the transformation, Moran replied “The way it is totally and utterly put together, finished and done. Everything works so beautifully and the girls keep it so clean and tidy as it looks incredible! They are super easy to maintain – every time I go into their rooms I feel like I’ve stepped into a magazine!”

eeping, Willow is certainly not! This beautiful bedroom belongs to the gorgeous Willow. A bright-eyed two year old full of personality and a love of animals. At the heart of her room is the show stopping ‘Peonies’ decal by Urban Walls. The peonies, placed above Willow’s bed, are sure to inspire the most magical of dreams. Its soothing soft greys, blush pinks and soft purples form the inspiration for the room’s colour palette and create a loving and soothing mood, perfect for settling even the most cheeky of toddlers. It’s hard to believe that this cohesive room was all designed from the other side of the world, after only having viewed the room once. But when your speciality is edesign services for children specialising in interior design, wardrobe design, birth announcements and milestones, and special event styling, it’s hard not to be surprised. Trista, Willow’s mum is the Owner and Designer of Willow Lee and Me. While it’s unusual to design your daughter’s room from the other side of the world, Trista embraced the challenge when faced with a move to the UK. She says “I knew when planning Willow’s room that the climate in the UK would be very different to Australia, so I needed Willow’s room to be light and fresh… but relaxing, calm and pretty.” Willow is lucky enough to have an entire wall made from glass in her room, which allows lots of natural light to flow in and is the perfect place for this princess to keep a keen watch on the city she overlooks. Everything was sourced and shipped to their new home in the UK over a period of months, and once it all came together it was “exactly how I imagined it to be”. The brief for Willow’s room was a relaxing, calm and pretty space. A room that she could not
just sleep in but also play, read and colour-in. Dividing the room into clear zones – a reading corner, a creative space and a sleeping space – makes clever use of a small room whilst fulfilling all elements of the brief. The most important element of course, was, delivering a space that Willow adores spending time in. The creative zone is Trista (and Willow’s) favourite part of the room. A round marble table, blush bow chairs and hints of gold add a touch of lux and sophistication to this room. Willow’s creativity blooms under the watchful eye of the Carousel Unicorn and Swan featured in the Little Rae Prints. The prints are reminiscent of dreamy circus days and add to the magical old world charm of this room and appeal to Willow’s love of animals. Trista loves watching Willow play in the space especially created for her. The Mini Mod by Home Day is the perfect place to snuggle into with the super soft Mongolian sheepskin throw for a story with mum and dad. Other favourites in the room are the gorgeous Swans by Miann and Co and Ilka, the whimsical star cushions, and the gorgeous storage boxes by Gold Frankincense and Myrrh. Whilst one could be distracted by all the beautiful things lovingly and carefully selected for the room, it’s hard to forget that this room is all about Willow. Willow’s name is gorgeously adorned over her cot on the floating sign by Louie Luxe. It’s a space that has been designed to grow with Willow, from the cot that coverts to a bed, to the removable decals and accessories selected to complement the purpose of the room. A
re-designed bedroom as a birthday surprise has produced a super stylish retreat for 13-year old Ella.
When it came time to update Ella Sisley’s childhood bedroom, her mother Narelle turned to the design nous of Tarina Lyell from oheightohnine. “I was super excited to start this project because I created older sister Kate’s teenage bedroom last year,” explains Tarina. “We have loosely replicated the furniture layout to match Kate’s, however the two rooms look so different. Cohesive, yet different!” Ella searched Pinterest to pull together inspiration for the room, and settled on an urban boho theme with a string light photo wall, sourced from ScandiKids. “As Ella is in high school now, a desk was a must as well as a slightly larger bed and somewhere to store her large shoe collection. We wanted her room to be a place where she could escape and feel happy and relaxed,” says Narelle. Budget-friendly choices were paramount, to ensure Ella wasn’t locked into a particular theme and the space could evolve as she does, “By keeping the furniture simple and fairly modern, the room has versatility and can easily be redecorated if Ella grows out of the urban style. This is also a good option if you like to follow seasonal trends,” says Tarina. “We wanted to keep the budget down so we were keen to source pieces that were quality but not individually too expensive,” adds Narelle. As a 13-year old who loves to dance and has a penchant for Doc Marten and Converse shoes, Ella’s personality is strongly reflected throughout the room – from the colour palette of grey, rose gold and a touch of pink, through to the ‘You Rock’ poster from Seek and Style. In fact, when Tarina initially suggested the poster, Narelle commented the photo could be of Ella – it fit her
style so perfectly! The skirting boards, wall trim, doors and top half of the room are painted in Dulux Lexicon Quarter and the bottom half of the room is painted in Dulux Tranquil Retreat Quarter, providing a beautiful, neutral base. Plenty of texture has been introduced with the ‘Mumbai’ handcrafted jute and hemp rug from The Dusty Poppy, the luxe camel Mongolian sheepskin from Hides of Excellence, and the ontrend ‘Tahoma’ wall hanging tapestry from Pillow Talk. The biggest challenge to the room installation is also one of its biggest statements – the ‘Soho’ hammock chair from Ivory and Deene. A regular occasional chair would have made the bedroom crowded, whereas the hanging chair frees up floor space and Ella can also slide the leather Moroccan ottoman underneath the hammock so it is out of the way when not in use. However, as relaxing a spot as this may be, the installation was anything but, with additional support beams added in the roof for extra safety. “Climbing in the roof and installing the fixings for the hanging chair was the main challenge. But once this was completed, the rest was easy,” says Narelle, who does admit to changing up the styling at the last minute before the room was ‘revealed’ to Ella. “We made a dash to Adairs in the middle of styling to purchase the Home Republic ‘Hanoi’ shelf above the desk, which was a wonderful inclusion. hen it comes to children’s bedrooms, Bek Halliday is no stranger to great design and style. Mother of two, and founder of Bek Halliday Art, her days are spent in the world of abstract art creating affordable prints and original art for the home, and whimsical children’s prints and deco. Bek was inspired by Instagram and Pinterest to create a room for her girls to share within the whimsical, woodland, fairy realm. “My two little girls adore each other, so I wantd to create a shared space with enough room to grow, play and dream. They are both little daydreamers and I often find them quietly singing to themselves whilst playing their little games” says Bek “I love the whimsical feeling you get as you enter. It’s exactly what I was hoping to create.” Working in a room that throws a different light to the rest of the house was a point of consideration for Bek. A white base and white
panelling feature combined with the earthy pink, created the balance of light and warmth required. “The panelled walls anchor the space perfectly” explains Bek. When asked her favourite feature in the room, it was hard to pin it down to just one. Says Bek “Oh my! Can I have two? Definitely the amazing Dusty Pink Bed Drape by Numero74. It is what dreams are made of. And also the Hanging Chair from Byron Bay Hanging Chairs. aving previously worked with interior designer Belinda Nihill, of Nest Design Studio, to create elder son Hugo’s bedroom, Meagan and husband Jamie were keen to employ her expertise again with baby Felix’s nursery. Nest Design Studio works with clients around the globe, from Saudi Arabia to France, UK and the USA, creating beautiful rooms for little people. “I’m a qualified Interior Designer and have been working in the industry for 17 years, so as much as I know ‘pretty’, I also know function,” says Belinda. “My designs are classic and sophisticated and while they are on trend, they aren’t trend driven, which means they stand the test of time.” Meagan’s design aesthetic leans towards Hamptons with a touch of industrial, and both she and Jamie love the water. With that in mind, they asked Belinda to design a nursery that incorporated a nautical theme. “It’s a big room, so we were able to go quite bold with the colour,” explains Belinda, whose only stipulation was to use navy as a base colour. “Once I found the navy grass cloth wallpaper, everything else just fell into place,” she says. “Initially it was hard to track down a navy (Ralph Lauren had a beautiful one but at $900 it was a bit out of the budget!), but I love that this one has a really slight shimmer to it in the right light.” Belinda says the colour palette was less important than the addition of texture to the space. In addition to the beautiful, tactile grass cloth wallpaper, she included leather in the ottoman and a cushion on the day bed, along with velvet cushions. “I really love the selection of cushions that are grouped on the day bed – they are really beautiful pieces.” Keeping the nautical design brief luxe and classic, Belinda used designer Greg Natale as inspiration, and was able to bring in the
cot, change table and chair from brother Hugo’s room. With those pieces as her starting point, she added Pottery Barn ‘Rugby’ curtains with wide stripes that add an element of fun and contrast nicely with the whimsy of the Scandi Kids sailing ship mobile and Designer Boys ‘Blue Whale’ framed print. The use of woodwork beading – a decorative moulding – to enhance the walls gives the room interest and depth. Belinda advises working with a trusted professional to achieve this result, claiming the smooth installation of the room was the result of working with a great carpenter. The key to ensuring such a large space doesn’t lose a bedroom’s inherent quality of cosy comfort is to build layers of interest and texture. While the grass cloth wallpaper and beading go a long way towards ensuring this, it is also the textiles and small details that make this nursery the luxe, yet liveable, room it is. An Armadillo & Co braid weave rug in chalk, Growing Footprints ‘Liewood Dumbo Grey’ blanket and Red Plum ‘Anchors’ linen bring necessary warmth to the room, together with a multitude of carefully chosen cushions. Added into the mix is a curated collection of objects that pack a punch of personality, including personalised oars gracing the walls, a boat-themed mirror (functional and fun!), and various wooden toys. “Working with a client once is a privilege, but working with the same client three times over three years… well that’s just a whole other level! A big thank you to Meagan and her beautiful family for hiring Nest to create such special rooms in their home,” says Belinda with gratitude.

ackling three kids’ rooms simultaneously is not for the faint hearted, but once Sally and Toby finished renovating their lounge and kitchen, they felt that it needed to be done. “I had seen Facebook photos from a friend who had enlisted the help of Jacinda of Hide & Sleep for her daughter’s room and I was keen to secure her services,” says Sally.

Sally and Jacinda sat with Emma (10), Jessica (8) and Harry (5) to chat about which colours they liked and what was important to them, to help set a personalised brief for each room.
After locking in the wallpapers, design boards were completed and shown to the three children for approval.
Emma, as the eldest, was imagining a grownup room with gold metallic wallpaper and pink features. She also wanted a desk for drawing and craft making as well as a comfortable chair to sit and quietly read, hidden away from the busy shared spaces in the house. Jessica wanted colour and fun expressed throughout her room. Other items on her wish list included wallpaper, a chair, a chest of drawers and hanging hooks for her necklaces and bags. When consulted, Harry wanted his love of Star Wars and super heroes to feature heavily in his room. Sally wanted to honour his request as much possible while making sure it was “something he could grow with and didn’t date quickly,” she remarks. Using the personalised briefs, Jacinda ordered in wallpaper samples for all three rooms. It was love at first sight for Emma when she saw the metallic dot Juju Papers wallpaper, while Jessica took a little longer – starting with ten options which were then narrowed down
In the end, Jessica decided on blue triangle removable wallpaper which Sally was very happy with. Harry liked his Mum’s choice of a Milton and King grid wallpaper which she felt was both minimal and modern.
EMMA’S ROOM As soon as she saw it, Emma was adamant the striking pink knot cushion should be a feature – and it has - claiming pride of place on the blush MRD Home chair. Nestled comfortably nearby, Amigoes de Hoy baskets and a textured rug enhance the corner ensemble and invite you to stay and put your feet up. For the bed, a white linen quilt cover was selected and adorned with beautiful coloured cushions from Langdon Ltd and a grey Kip & Co throw to finish it off. A Plyroom side table sits to one side chosen for its beautiful simplicity and space saving utility. Giving thought to the impending teenage years, a Design Stuff mirror was included along with a hanging light for illumination to help achieve lip gloss perfection. The desk was from Ikea and the grey swivel chair from Globe West. A cute yet practical multi-pouch belt to stash bits and bobs was placed above the desk, as well as a Plyroom pegboard to display Emma’s treasured keepsakes. The clock from Clocksicle will remind Emma when it is time to go to bed (or get up) and the Norsu interiors print with fairy lights brings a whimsical softness to the room. JESSICA’S ROOM Jacinda decided to accentuate Jessica’s blue triangle Betapet wallpaper by adding a pale blue MRD Home chair and soft blue quilt cover. The upholstered Mesxii linen bed head is white to keep a classic element which doesn’t date. An assortment of cushions cluster on the bed adding shape, pattern and colour while a felt garland hangs above injecting further playfulness. Jacinda couldn’t find a chest of drawers that she liked for Jessica so she visited Ikea and painted each draw on the chosen unit a different colour to match other elements in the room. Without a doubt, these drawers have now become one of the highlights of the room. Staying true to her call for colour, Jessica picked a Pete Cromer parrot print for above her chair and pinched a Rachel Castle print from her Mum’s study (luckily Sally obliged). Jacinda added the It’s Beautiful Here coat rack from Leo and Bella and hung some of Jessica’s odds and ends up, creating instant visual appeal and stamping Jessica’s personality into the design. The vibrant Electric Confetti ice cream light is a bold yet funky addition.

HARRY’S ROOM Harry also scored a fabulous Mexsii linen bedhead, though in a tranquil pale blue colour with tan piping detail. In Bed Store striped linen was the perfect choice as it was easy to mix and match with different cushions. Jacinda introduced ‘touch and feel’ elements such as denim, felt, leather and wool through the cushions and these add wonderful natural overtones. As Harry’s room is the smallest out of the three, storage has always been an issue. Jacinda addressed this in a spectacular fashion with a Lilly and Lolly storage unit which houses most of Harry’s books and toys. Being very active, careful consideration was given to how Harry would use the room and different play spots were carved out – he can read on his chair, use his Plyroom bench for cars or set-up a super hero secret hideout on his Harper rug. Harry was shown the Dino Raws prints and he thought they were very cool so a selection was hung around his room and joined his much loved Star Wars print. ike the comfort of a heartfelt embrace, the warm tones of Alexa Gigi’s nursery calm the senses and evoke a feeling of gentle love – perfect for a little one. Distractions have intentionally been kept to a minimum to allow a very cheeky and curious mind a place for downtime and solace for sleep. “I don’t know if it was hormone induced but the colour pink was my main inspiration – at the time I was pregnant it was popping up on my radar on my mood boards and trend pages for work,” muses her mother Magdalene. Whatever the inspiration, the pink hue of the room muted by some soft greys like the Pottery Barn Kids Reese cot and Nana Huchy star cushion, creates a haven for her little daughter. Magdalene has successfully translated pink in a manner which encourages others to be brave and think pink. Magdalene worked with the bones of the room to keep costs down. Painting the walls in Dulux Antique White with a donkey grey coloured carpet provided a great foundation to build the palette. “I started with selecting a shade of pink that would flatter the carpet and went from there,” says Magdalene. A standout in the space is the half wall with Dulux Feather Boa. Magdalene notes “It was a simple DIY home project (a matter of measuring, taping and a few licks of paint) yet it really lifts the room and makes it a little extra special.” The Animal Print Shop prints sit harmoniously over the half wall enhancing the transition of colour and adding playful interest for the eye. Magdalene has been a magazine and product stylist for the last twelve years and launched The Bebe Style Co., a nursery and children’s room interior styling service. Based on her philosophy of creating pretty, practical and liveable spaces that grow with a family, Magdalene wanted to 124 WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU
give Alexa a room that was baby appropriate but with a little rearranging could easily transition to a toddler’s room in a few years. Magdalene explains “that’s why I opted for a non-traditional nursing chair that could live in our bedroom or living area once I was finished feeding.” Magdalene has achieved longevity with the interior as “nearly two years later it’s still going strong” and the chosen pieces are growing with Alexa who is now on the move and keen to explore her nursery from different angles. As a Sydney dweller, the challenge of maximising space became an opportunity for Magdalene to add well-considered design elements to the mix. Enter the H&G Designs suede leather ladder which provides a ‘shelfie’ with a small footprint – a perfect house guest. Most importantly the floor space has been retained for the priorities of play and discovery – a must for any child. The textures captured in Alexa’s nursery help enhance the visual appeal and set the scene for the calming and sensory experience of the space. Magdalene’s attention to textual details using elements such as a HK Living rattan chair from Luumo Design, Langdon LTD shag cushions, a Pottery Barn Kids delaney rug and a Kate & Kate alpaca thwwrow further soften this beautiful and feminine space. As Magdalene confirms “It’s funny being a stylist and a lover of all pretty things – my overall favourite thing about the space is how it makes me feel. I spend a lot of time within those four walls, sometimes with a screaming baby, and for the most part I feel very comfortable and relaxed.”

Creative and energetic, two year old Phoenix is King of all the wild things in his own ‘wild one’ world. But unlike Max of favorite children’s book Where the Wild Things Are - who is surrounded by a forest and a tumbling ocean and terrible wild ones with sharp teeth - Little Phoenix is surrounded by vast icy plains that extend for eons off into the distance, and wild furred creatures, and strange boab trees, and his very own throne, and a magical tent where he can escape and be safe and dream. This ‘Wild One’ world is the creation of Anna from Design Après. They specialise in bespoke interior design, styling curation and decoration services seamlessly tailored to clients’ needs. And Phoenix is one client whose needs Anna truly understands. She’s Phoenix’s mum. In designing the room, Anna set out to construct a wildly creative space in which to relax, sleep and play. But Anna understands all too well that Phoenix is just at the start of his journey through the world, and that as he navigates it, he will grow and develop and change and love and need new things. Anna says “In creating this space it was important to think of how Phoenix would use the room at aged two and going forward.” The room is refined and sophisticated. Anna was careful to pare back some of the younger decorative and playtime pieces. So for now, for Phoenix, who loves the zoo, animals and the wilderness, his world has been inspired by the wild. But Anna has laid the foundations for his room to grow as he grows by incorporating timeless, but functional pieces. A pull out trundle bed by House of Orange is currently used for storage, which will be handy for sleep overs in the future, while classic shaker style cabinetry has been incorporated to maximise storage for toys and books. The main decorative starting point for the room was taken from the geometric raccoon print from
Silke Bonde and the dominating wolf duvet cover sourced from By Nord. The artworks inspired the timeless colour palette, creating a foundation that can evolve with his growing interests. The refined and pared back monochromatic scheme creates a haven for relaxation and play, important for a boy with lots of energy. Not only does it create calm, but also a blank canvas on which Phoenix can plan and imagine his wild adventures. Warmth is added to the room through the addition of the tan High-Back Leather Chair by Jardan -the perfect throne for a tiny king. The Aboriginal artwork and tan cushion also add an extra layer of softness. The Bespoke Tent by Billy Button Australia - “the standout showpiece” - draws you into the room. Its painted crosses were colour matched to complement the room’s colour palette. And what little man does not need his own hideaway? By all accounts Phoenix thinks it is as good as it looks, as he “thoroughly enjoys playtime in and around his tent fostering all sorts of creative play ideas. Recently he found that positioning a sensory light toy within the top of the tent created a magical light display to enjoy.” The room is named after the Wild One print by The Jaded Kids. The print forms part of the art wall which sets the mood for the room and is one of the key elements that can be updated and easily enhanced with an injection of a new colour palette and theme as Phoenix grows. The lines on the Black + White Rug by Papaya create the perfect tracks for Phoenix to play and ‘brooooom’ all manner of things. Which is handy, because true to her word about having the room grow with Phoenix, Anna is already planning on tweaking the room to incorporate his new obsession with trains! ithout doubt one of the most popular rooms in our Minty Magazine 2017 Collector’s Edition was the stunning Scandinavian style room Tarina Lyell of oh. eight. oh. nine created for Thomas. When we saw that his baby brother, Christian, was next in line for a new room we were dying to share it with you all! Christian’s nursey continues with the Scandinavian theme his parents, Jemma and Ben Van Ryt, love. Once again enlisting Tarina, the brief was to carry the same throughout both rooms. Says Jemma ‘Thomas’ bedroom turned out better than we could have ever expected! I wanted to run the same style, have the rooms tie in together’. Tarina went with a neutral colour palette and used complementary furniture to keep the room flexible into the future ‘When designing this nursery, the idea was to create a soft, cosy space that was versatile enough to become a toddler bedroom in a couple of years’ time. We also wanted to keep the look of both boys’ bedrooms consistent so we chose Oeuf NYC furniture again. This ensured that the furniture style and colours were the same in both rooms, however the individual pieces were different’ explains Tarina. 140 WWW.MINTYMAGAZINE.COM.AU
Tarina worked with Jemma’s choice of wall paper (Molin Cloud Wallpaper) and desire for a rocking chair as a base of the room. ‘One thing Jemma really wanted to incorporate into the room was a rocking chair. You can’t go past the quality and versatility of a Hobbe rocking chair, so we locked this firmly in as one of our first purchases. The grey upholstery works perfectly backed by the wallpaper, where the white legs suit the timber finish of the cot, framed artwork and dresser. If you’re looking for a comfortable and well-crafted nursing chair, this rocker is definitely worth looking at’ explains Tarina. I think it’s fair to say this room is a resounding success – hitting the brief at every turn. A cosy and welcoming, Scandinavian bedroom that complements his brother’s room and which will grow with Christian. ‘I love that’s Christian’s room is so warm and inviting. This room is a crazy mix of ahhhh zen and inyour-face awesomeness, ever so delicately and perfectly balanced to meet the needs of any 16 year old… girl. And who better to deliver such an eclectic mix of cool, calm and collected raggghhh than the creative team at Live Loud Girl. Their mantra is to “inspire, create and differentiate, because life is short, so live loud – why not?” The brief was to deliver an organized, clean room with very little clutter where our girl could read, work and chill with friends. High up on the must have list was a wall of statement art. This was achieved by framing loud colorful posters from The Poster Club and Wonder & Rah in gorgeous large frames. The bold but cohesive colour palette, contrasting patterns and pop art inspired designs all inject energy and vibrancy into this domain, helping to rouse any late rising teen from their slumber. The palm wallpaper by Cole & Son is certainly not at risk of being mistaken for a wallflower, and was inspired by the Live Loud Girls team’s love of travel. It evokes the feeling of tropical holidays, helping to create a teen retreat. It formed the base of the room design and its freshness, lushness and timelessness are all important elements in designing kids’ rooms and for creating spaces that they can grow in to, rather than out of. The wall paper also helps to ground the room and balance the colour palette from becoming too … girly. The lush green theme is further extended by the wall branches from Vitra which add dimension and another layer of texture to the room.

Hot pink accents have been injected into the space through the addition of the funky dot bed linen by Feliz and the Bowery Company ‘Girls’ neon sign above the bed that commands attention, cannot be missed and provides a level of uber cool. Contrasting with the loud neon hues is the custom made plush Rozenkelim rug, which balances the bolder elements of the room by adding a level of softness, and is a perfect choice for a bedroom. Meanwhile, the exquisite pink ‘look at me’ inlay side table fits perfectly with the loud, but calm, tropical vibe. Order has been created in the room by providing different storage solutions. The floating Besta storage cabinet from IKEA provides cool clean lines, and more importantly, loads of storage space to store away clutter. The wall mounted leather magazine strap from the Bowery company provides the perfect place to stow away the latest book or magazine after chilling out on the bed. The hanging Pendant is Papillon van Forestier, designer Elise Fouin and its breezy design, reminiscent of cane furniture, is the perfect fit for this relaxed scene. Its location over the bed has the effect of drawing your eye up past the hot pink bed linen and neon sign, up to the canopy of the bed and to the high ceilings, which just add to the laid back air of this room. It also ties in perfectly with the green cane peacock chair, which creates a perfect reading nook. All in all, this room, with its combination of materials, patterns and colors, together with the sleek furniture creates a very cosmopolitan vibe, just as intended. This is the perfect place for a teen girl to live. Just like other rooms created by Live Loud Girl, this signature style is hard to define and is best experienced!
