SURVEYING / SITE VISIT

“I don’t need ver y much now,” said the boy. “Just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am ver y tired.” “Well,” said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, “Well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting Come, Body, sit down, Sit down and rest.” And the boy did. And the tree was happy. Excerpt from The Giving Tree Shel Silverstein HarperCollins Publishers ©1964, New York

TAILORING SPACE THROUGH RITUAL

Can a habitational ritual consciously tailor an empathetic layer to allow for re-engagement of a user with the disassociated built environment?

CHELSEA MARKET

WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART HIGH LINE

SOHO HOUSE NEW YORK

Site Analysis on Sanborn 2016 Map

This thesis project suggests how human ritual performance engages in creating an empathetic interior space, a layer between the built environment and inhabitants. The project focuses on the habitational ritual that catalyzes inhabitants’ adaptation in the residential environment. As a remedy for disconnection, the empathetic layer is tailored to homeless people, one of the most marginalized population in New York City, as an urban scale ritual.

THE POPS WEARS PRADA

Public interior spaces in NYC should be protected from intrusions from commercial spaces. The ways my project addresses this is by tailoring the luxur y, comfor t, intimacy and privacy of the PRADA to the public space, rather than commercial program taking over the public program.

PRADA has been in pursuit of defining their company’s luxur y through various strategies. In my project, PRADA pursues its luxur y by not containing any direct adver tisement, even disassociating itself from the existing public space; the POPS wears the philanthropic luxuries of PRADA , accommodating people with an increase in comfor t and intimacy.

MENDING THE URBAN DWELLING

Home is a refuge from urban cacophony. In today’s urban environment, the boundar y between home and outside world has been regarded more important than ever due to the over whelming number of interactions within society. But, with the intrusion of extended work at home and not enough privacy and comfort, the line gets blurred. The warmth also greets those who come back home from work. The passage from the entry unveils their messy clothes and welcome them into large family space. What makes a house a home? Can any interior space be home? A home is the only and the most intimate space for the entire family. For those who mainly stay at home, the grandmother and child, home is where they spend most of their time. They must feel warm not only physically, but emotionally.

Interior Privately Owned Public Spaces(POPS) is to be redefined as a space that reflects users, and through the experience within, users acknowledges themselves a typical pixel of the public, regardless difference of gender, race and ethnicity.

REMAPPING THE PUBLIC THE PUBLIC REMAPPING

Public is where the “sharing” happens. By one’s own experience, the experience stays private, even in a public space. Shared emotion, moment, and experience, with one’s company or any stranger create the public space. A shared experience, “I see you in my surrounding,” delineates the relationship of seeing other people, inhabiting and strolling in the space, as reflection, and awknowledging oneself as a possible participant of the public sphere.

Interior Privately Owned Public Spaces(POPS) have been critical advantages for private building owners and developers. Yet, for public, these spaces have benn ser ved for mere circulation. There is lack of fruitful public life within. Public life is tricky to accommodate. Doyles Hayden, in “Histor y of Urban landscape, expresses an idea that the perception of the public spaces varies by race, gender, and ethnicity in regard to the social and political histor y. The accumulation of the histor y has shaped the contemporar y public life, including layers of segregation, persecution and unjust. In this sense, public space must be ignorant to the past, but malleable to the present, unlimiting segregation of any kind.

S Y M P H O N Y SPACE AS A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

Art and music are ver y sensitive performances. Design for combining two fragile acts should focus on not inter vening appreciation for each performance. Audience should not be distracted from artwork by musical performance visually. The sound of musical space should be kept in narrower but taller space for richer sounds. Thus, the spaces are united carefully through three primitive senses. Entering the space, music flows out, but it is only meant to be listened. A solid concrete wall blocks visual attraction to musical performance. Some portion of wall expose inner layers of the concert hall, and audience can hear and touch the music. Also, balcony allows audience to interact with music before entering the concert hall.

Concert hall is constructed with thinner layer of wood wall, which will bounce the sound charmingly and will vibrate as an instrument. Most of wall is double layered with thick concrete wall to keep sound in the musical space. Smaller but taller space will make the music the most pleasing way. Some portions of the concrete wall toward exterior of the building are also peeled and opened with windows for the public enjoyment.

If a space for musical performance vibrates the space itself, it is possible for the space to be a public jukebox.
