Meadow Pavilion Located one-hour northeast of New York City on a large residential estate, the Meadow Pavilion is the concluding structure to a much larger master plan that features numerous out-buildings, gardens, and meadows linked by a series of paths and lawns back to a main house. Functioning as a garden, guesthouse and event/ dining space, the Pavilion is sited at the most southern end of the property’s meadows, capitalizing on views to the distant rolling hills of the Hudson Valley to the north. Given its site and function, the Pavilion seeks to become non-architecture, a participant rather than an object in its field, and tests a variety of scenarios that seek to breakdown the traditional boundaries between landscape and architecture. Similar to its natural surroundings, the “building acts performatively, using digital technology to interact with sound, and light over time, creating an expanded atmosphere of sensory effects, that blends natural and theatrical phenomena.

T(EA) HOUSE The T(EA) House is sited in Greenwich, CT, on a long, linear lot that reaches out toward views of the Long Island Sound. Three volumes (“primitives), similar in size, are linked together by a sculptural staircase, the middle volume pivoting 90 degrees at the intersection of landscape and building and producing the T shaped form. The site is conceived of as an active landscape, with the interior program spilling out into the surrounding gardens, creating pockets of programed exterior space of both hardscape and softscape that take advantage of the linearity of the site. A long, processional pathway defines the main axis from which the architecture pivots around, demarcating the formal entry of the house and terminating at the grand, three-story staircase. The staircase performs as a voided link between the three volumes lifting up and mimicking the character of a lantern to define a quite loft space with access to the roof garden.

44PL This project is conceived as a series of concrete retaining walls and escarpments that traverse and cascade down a steeply sloped site. The building strategy is to deploy a series of straight walls that act as “jetties” into the landscape and respond as a counter-force to the topography. Hovering above and anchored to these concrete site walls is the “House” proper, a “primitive” conceived and constructed as a series of smooth extruded volumes of differing lengths. Symbolically and strategically, the first of these “boxes” presents a gablefront facade to the street and helps conceal the scale of the overall house beyond. The second container-box rotates 90 degrees and runs parallel to the street and site walls. The perpendicular orientation between the two “boxes” produces a powerful contrast and juxtaposition between representation and abstraction within the project.

465PA The 465PA apartment project occupies a full-floor towards the top of the Ritz Tower. It is a primary residence for a couple that wanted to do more than simply display their significant contemporary art collection, one that is deeply personal for them. They sought an architecture that would engage with their pieces—including several by Damien Hirst, Sam Francis, and John McCracken— formally and experientially. With an awareness that many of those artists are interested in the specific ways in which art occupies space, the architect conceived the design of the home with each individual painting or sculpture in mind. With its limited materials, manipulation of light, two-tone color palette, and rigorous detailing, the apartment blurs the lines between art and architecture, while heightening an awareness of how both interact with space.
