ach winter, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) hosts the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show, which annually brings together manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and press for a four-day exhibition extravaganza. In what seems to have become an annual occurrence, the 2017 show broke previous attendance records, and this year’s show, scheduled from January 22-25, is anticipated to as well. An estimated 65,000 enthusiasts will converge on the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas to see and sample the latest and greatest from the world’s top manufacturers. The show began in 1978. As you may know, before that time, shooting and hunting equipment was categorized alongside tennis rackets and surfboards at sporting goods shows, and industry executives felt the need to have a showcase of their own. There were less than 100 exhibitors at the first iteration of SHOT. Today, there are more than 1,600 booths, making it one of the largest trade shows in all of North America. The SHOT Show is not open to the general public, but more than 2,500 members of the mainstream media and outdoor press from around the world attend and report on their behalf. This includes writers and editors from the

hile combing countless gun shops and online retailers for holsters back in 2014, Kevin Mason was dissatisfied with what he found. So, he decided to take matters into his own hands. CAT SLAM FEVER Bagging North America’s major wild felids – cougars, lynx and bobcats – is no easy task, but three approaches can help when the ‘obsession’ begins. STORY AND PHOTOS BY SCOTT HAUGEN

aving spent several hours in the rugged valleys of Alaska’s Brooks Range, the 40-below-zero winter temperatures numbed my face. Driven by desire, my Inupiaq Eskimo hunting partner and I continued our predator quest. Searching for wolves, wolverine and lynx, it was the latter of the trio on which my heart was set. Edging into a narrow gully, vertical cliffs ascended skyward, laden in ice and packed snow. The frozen creek on which our snowmobiles treaded was solid, and a nearby willow grove appeared to be the prime place to pitch camp. Starting to clear a spot for the tent, a pair of tracks caught my eye. Closer inspection revealed the tracks were those of two lynx, and they continued upstream. Less than 200 yards into the tracking job, the felines snuck into a grove of naked willows. The still, quiet air and ivory snow made for silent stalking, and peering into the willows, I held steady, scanning for any sign of the cats. Ominously, two sets of golden eyes materialized in the tangled willows, 30 yards from me. A shooting lane was soon revealed, and before I knew it I

was back at camp, reliving the hunt for my partner. Not only was this a special experience for the game it yielded and the setting in which it took place, but also because it was the last of the trio of cats I needed to complete the coveted North American cat slam. The mystique surrounding the hunting of the continent’s great cats not only piques a hunter’s senses but carries much mystery and intrigue. Ironically, bobcat, lynx and cougar are

seldom seen by hunters in the field, despite the healthy populations within each of the cats’ respective ranges. Knowing cats are out there is all it takes to motivate many hunters, and once you’ve decided to undertake a cat quest, there are three approaches that can help close the deal. TRACKING CATS Tracking down a cat on foot may sound impossible, but if the conditions are americanshootingjournal.com 77

ROAD HUNTER more prepared a hunter must be to spend some serious time in the woods. Unfortunately, until you’re on the trail of a cat, you don’t know how far it will go or where it may lead. Hunters have cut tracks and filled their tag minutes after starting the stalk; others have covered 20-plus miles a day and never caught up with their prize. Once on a fresh track, stealth is key. Know that a cat can appear in a trail at any moment, or be found bedded nearby. Avoid getting caught up in the urge to cover ground quickly rather than efficiently. Let your eyes do the work, as the goal is to spot a cat before it sees you. Search beneath every tree that lies ahead, paying particular attention to conifers with low-growing branches that offer cats protection from falling snow. On mornings that turn sunny, scour open hillsides where cats often bask. Rocky outcroppings hold heat and are excellent places to spot cats on sunny days. Bobcat and lynx also spend time in brush thickets, rooting out small game and rodents. When tracks are found leading into such brush piles, distance yourself from the area, then glass. Calling can also be productive at this point.

The pinnacle of the predator hunting world is calling in a wary cougar, something that can take many days, even seasons, to accomplish. Cougar meat is excellent eating, too.

right, success rates on these types of hunts can run surprisingly high. I know of two Washington hunters who set out on foot one winter, cut two sets of tracks and had two nice cougars on the ground by noon. My Alaskan lynx was further proof this ploy can be pulled off, and bobcats can also be trailed in the right conditions. The key to successful tracking is weather. Snow is a must, and the 78

fresher it is, the better. Many devoted cat trackers wait for a fresh skiff of snow to fall during the night, taking to the hills at first light in search of new tracks. As all three cat species have a tendency to follow logging roads, game trails, skirt open terrain and move through natural funnels, knowing where to look for tracks is typically not the problem. The more ground a cat covers, the

HOUND HUNTS Because hunting conditions can vary widely in cat country, turning to hounds, where legal, is another option. Considered the most effective means of taking a cat, hunting behind a pack of hounds is also the best method of selective harvest. Once a cat is treed or bayed, hunters can assess the age, sex and quality of the cat prior to pulling the trigger. However, don’t misconstrue hound hunting with a slam-dunk proposition, or worse yet, one that’s easy. Some of my most grueling hunts have come while chasing a pack of hounds through rugged country around the West. For bobcat hunters, some states that are closed to running cougars with hounds remain open to the running of bobcats. With a little homework, a

double can be taken in states still open to the running of both cougars and bobcats with hounds. If desiring a unique hound hunting experience, one where hunters follow the pack on horseback rather than on foot, head to the high desert regions of the West. Here, dry, open terrain finds cats able to quickly cover ground. Keeping up with them on foot in this rugged, rocky terrain is all but impossible, which is where horses come in. The thrill of hound hunting is that you never know what you’re in for. The hunt may end in success after only a few minutes, or it may drag on for days, 80

through some of the roughest terrain out there. As with any form of hunting, trailing dogs is never a guarantee. CALLING CATS For the ultimate cat hunting experience, try predator calls. Save for bears, the excitement of attracting a predator by way of game calls, where the target animal comes in for the kill rather than to check out a member of the opposite sex, can only be found in cats and canines. Though cougars are the ones to most likely pose a threat when called in, lynx and bobcat are no less thrilling to coax within range. Approaching on

silent feet, moving in for the kill is a cat’s primary goal when responding to predator calls. Often, not until the cat is within mere feet of the hunter is their presence detected, meaning hunters need to be on guard throughout the entire calling sequence. Cougar hunters find the most success with deer distress sounds, be they fawn, doe or buck sounds. Including a doe or fawn decoy into the set-up can help capture the attention of an approaching, wary cougar. January and February are prime months to call cougars, as it’s their breeding season, so utilizing such sounds on an electronic call is a good approach.

ROAD HUNTER For bobcat and lynx, a high-pitched crippled jackrabbit or cottontail is tough to beat. The use of fawn and rabbit decoys, even moving birds, can help bring in lynx and bobcats. Crippled bird sounds also work on these smaller cats. Woodpecker distress sounds and sounds emulating

a bird under attack can quickly catch the attention of a nearby bobcat or lynx. Hawks often respond very quickly to bird distress sounds, so if you fool one of these predators of the sky, keep at it, as it confirms you’re doing something right. When calling cats, camouflage all

At times they seem to just magically appear before your eyes. Cat hunting can take you into breathtaking country that you may otherwise never see. hen the situation is down to the proverbial wire and it is time to press the trigger, a hunter wants the best equipment he or she can rely upon, and perhaps nowhere is that more important than in the choice of optics. That’s where Swarovski Optik comes in. This outfit has been helping hunters notch tags and fill freezers for decades, and for 2019, there are a couple of more reasons for precision shooters and hunters to pay attention. For openers, Swarovski is introducing the newest Z5 riflescope model in 2.4-12x50mm, a scope that can address virtually any hunting situation, from big timber to the wide-open prairie. Swarovski considers this model the ideal whitetail hunting scope, but it is quite a bit more than that. With a large objective capable of pulling in all available light, and a magnification range that will work for any challenge, from shooting prairie dogs to hunting deer, elk, sheep, Alaska moose and/or grizzlies, the new Z5 is capable of a great deal. Built on a 1-inch main tube, the newest Z5 has a 5X zoom range, a four-point coil spring system, and an optional ballistic turret. It measures 13.1 inches and weighs 16.2 ounces. The Z5 series has been around since its debut in 2009, so this new model marks the 10-year anniversary with flair. And

that’s not the only thing Swarovski will brag about in 2019. Enter the new dS, which Swarovski calls “a completely new generation of riflescope.” It offers the optical features of a conventional riflescope, plus the technology of digital targeting in a 5-25x52mm package. Press a button on this scope and it measures the exact distance to the target, then a reticle drops down letting the hunter know exactly where to hold. It also measures air pressure, the temperature and angle of the shot a hunter plans to take. Information is displayed right before a user’s eye, and that includes range to the target and bullet energy. Swarovski says this scope requires networking with a smart phone, and information is exchanged via a Bluetooth interface. It measures 15.87 inches in length and weighs 38.4 ounces. It is treated with Swarotop, Swarodour and Swaroclean optical coatings and is powered by a CR123 battery. When they call this a “smart” riflescope, they’re not kidding nor are they overhyping. The dS does what it promises, and that puts a hunter ahead of the curve, and maybe a few critical steps ahead of the game, which is exactly where someone needs to be in order to end a hunt successfully. It’s exactly what one expects from a riflescope wearing the Swarovski brand.

y trusty old Ruger 77 MKII .308 Winchester – a wellworn, and well-proven rifle – had come along for this afternoon’s hunt. I was sitting with a buddy in a small patch of woods, trying to test some new ammunition; he had a tag for a buck, and I had a doe tag in my pocket, so whatever we saw first would dictate who shot. With the exception of the

camaraderie, it was an uneventful afternoon; the squirrels kept us mildly entertained, but the deer activity was lackluster, to say the least. It was 10 minutes before legal time was up when a single deer crossed about 60 yards out in front of us. My buddy grabbed the rifle, settled the crosshairs for the only shot he had available – a straighton shot – and broke the Ruger’s trigger. The small buck folded to the shot, not even twitching. The ammunition we were testing

was Norma’s new BondStrike, the third in the Strike series, and I’m happy to report that it’s very good stuff. In the preparation for deer season, while going through the normal sighting-in process, I had the opportunity to test the new Norma stuff. Now, that rifle I mentioned – my early ’90s Ruger 77 MKII – is one I know very well. It has a trigger that is, well, less than desirable – why I haven’t replaced it with a Timney yet, I do not know – but I know how it shoots in spite of the factory. Nonetheless, the new Norma ammunition shot very well from my rifle. You see, this gun will rarely break 1 minute-of-angle (mostly due to the 6-pound trigger), but the Norma BondStrike printed a three-shot group measuring 0.8 inches, which is more than accurate enough for almost any hunting scenario. Velocities came very close to matching the advertised figures; the box indicated that the 180-grain bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2,625 feet per second, and my 22-inch barrel gave a muzzle velocity of 2,608 fps on my Oehler 35P chronograph. BONDSTRIKE COMES ON THE heels of TipStrike, the cup-and-core, flat base, polymer tip bullet, and then EcoStrike, Norma’s chrome-plated, monometal polymer tipped bullet. As the name indicates, this is Norma’s bonded core bullet, and as of this writing, it is only available in .308 130

Winchester, in the 180-grain weight, though I am assured many other common calibers will be available in 2019, with popular bullet weights. Bonding a bullet’s core helps to maintain the structural integrity during the terminal phase of its flight, especially when the bullet has a boattail. The standard cup-and-core bullets have a propensity to demonstrate jacket and core separation upon impact, especially when bones are struck. This phenomenon occurs more often with boattail bullets, so the cure was to chemically bond the copper jacket to the lead core. The process isn’t new, and certainly not new to Norma; their Oryx bullet has the rear portion of the jacket chemically bonded to the core, allowing for reliable expansion

at the front of the bullet, and deep penetration because the rear of the bullet can’t come apart. Our particular buck took the BondStrike bullet on a downhill angle, to the base of the neck, and as I reported, he dropped to the shot as if the “off switch” had been pulled. The bullet hit the spine and (uncannily) traveled down the bone for over 7 inches, with the hydraulic shock of the impact ruining that length of the delicious tenderloins. Quite obviously, any standard bullet would’ve broken into pieces under that type of strain (I probably couldn’t replicate that shot with a thousand opportunities), but the BondStrike held together rather well. We recovered the bullet within the left backstrap, smashed and flattened.

Upon weighing the recovered bullet, I recorded its weight at 73.2 grains out of the original 180; however, having recovered dozens of projectiles from a large number of species globally, I can attest that this retained weight figure is not indicative of the potential of the BondStrike bullet. obviously one of the toughest bones in a deer’s body – will take its toll on any expanding projectile. Did the BondStrike do its job? In my opinion, absolutely. That buck, simply put, died without ever having known what hit it, and for a bullet to demonstrate straight-line penetration within the spine of a deer is a testament to its integrity. I regret that I didn’t have the opportunity to test it on another deer – the season was marked with inclement weather and the duties of a traveling hunter – but I feel confident saying that this design would invariably exit on any broadside shot on deer. I’ve used all three of Norma’s Strike bullets on a variety of game, and have been pleased with the performance. They have all proven to be accurate, as well as lethal, and I deem them a worthy investment. I wouldn’t hesitate to use the BondStrike load in my .308 on bears, elk, or even moose. 
