OUR STORY A FA M I LY F O O T W E A R B R A N D S I N C E 1 9 4 8 … Our proud family company began in 1948, when new New Zealander Guglielmo Anselmi saw the opportunity to introduce his native Italian craftsmanship, quality and passion to a burgeoning young country, founding King Country Shoes. Today Guglielmo would be described as an entrepreneur, but back in 1948 he called himself simply a merchant. In the booming ‘80s, Guglielmo’s son Tony Anselmi launched Shoe Town into Auckland and Hamilton. A true innovator, the savvy new name was befitting of the times, when high volumes and low prices ruled. 04 Our Story
A decade later, in authentic merchant style, Guglielmo’s grandson Shane Anselmi took the reins of the family stores. Inspired by his travels abroad, Shane brought with him a more bespoke, personal approach, and Overland was born. 2014 heralds another exciting evolution, with the transition into Merchant 1948, a fresh, forwardthinking new name and look for our stores that stays true to our heritage and our values.
NEW NAME, NEW LOOK, NEW EXPERIENCE… 2014 IS GOING TO BE BIG! Over time each of our stores is getting a fresh, modern makeover. We’ve already rolled out six stylish MERCHANT 1948 stores across the country, and the others will evolve over time…

We go back to the future with an eagerly anticipated vintage trend that translates perfectly into footwear, drawing on inspiration from the mood and styles of 1950s but ensuring they’re made over for right now. We’ve also tapped into the edgiest trend of the season – grunge-luxe – which means plenty of cool rock-chic detailing, chunky power heels and a palette suitably heavy on matte black, moody burgundy, gritty greys and taupes and earthy urban hues.
