Semester 3 Nagaland, India
VERNACULAR DOCUMENTATION The Chakesang Nagas are one of the 17 major Naga tribe residing in the Phek district in South Eastern Nagaland. The word ‘Chakesang’ is the amalgamation of the names of three sub- tribes: “Cha” from “ Chakru”. “khe” from “Kheza” and “Sang” from “ Sangtam” . A typical Naga house has a N-E orientation. Most activities take place in a central integrated space with few partitions to enhance ventilation there are no such fenestrations apart from the main entry. A rear opening allows evacuation during earthquakes possible. Openings make for only 2-5% of the area of the walls.
