Kurhaus Hotel Bad Homburg, Germany

Schneider + Schumacher | Carla Lo Landschaftsarchitektur COMPETITION 2021 Kur- und Kongreß-GmbH Bad Homburg

The Kurhaus of the city of Bad Homburg in connection with the Kurhausgarten and the Kurpark, has always represented the center of the city not only spatially, but also emotionally and socially. The building complex is to accommodate the following uses: congress and conference center, theater, hotel, administration, supplementary public as well as animated, commercial uses and underground parking. In a smaller group than usual and more adjusted time to develop the project the team worked in two design proposals. One of which was developing a completely new building and the other was developing a concept that included the old facade of the original building. Both designs must be materialized in two different documents that included site plan, floorplans, sections and elevations, as well as renderings, detail of the facade and the calculation of the different areas for each design concept. In addition to this, during the process we worked with a 3D model and the physical model.

Ortenau Klinikum Hospital Offenburg, Germany

Schneider + Schumacher | Gina Barcelona Architects COMPETITION 2021 Ortenau Klinikum Offenburg

The project consists in an overall urban planning concept for the development of the clinic quarter and its integration into the existing landcape and urban structure of the industrial area. At the same time is planned a new system of mobility and a new hospital with approx. 720-730 beds. The collaboration between the two offices mentioned was mainly carried out through online discussions. Our office was responsible of the overall concept incluiding the urban planning concept, the hospital concept and the new system of mobility. The final result was reflected in 10 DIN A0 landscape format, which was also our task. During this process we worked on mobilty diagrams, site plan, 3D model of the surrounding buildings and the proposal itself and the calculation of areas in order to check the requirements stated on the competition brief.

Millennium Tower Skyscraper Frankfurt, Germany

Schneider + Schumacher | Bollinger + Grohman | ARUP COMPETITION 2020 CA Inmo Deutschland GmbH

The organizer of the competition is planning a mixed-use ensemble of two high-rise buildings (Tower A and Tower B) and a low-rise development on the so-called »Millennium Areal« between Osloer Strasse and Hohenstaufenstrasse in Frankfurt am Main Office space, hotel use and free and subsidized housing. In addition, attractive, invigorating urban uses that radiate into the surrounding urban spaces are to be arranged on the lower floors of all buildings. This includes gastronomy and retail uses, suitable service and leisure offers as well as cultural uses. With this in mind, the lower levels of the building should be designed to be inviting, open and lively. As there was an intermediate colloquium before the final submission we had a very intense working atmosphere, planning reviews each two or three days, making it more often in the last month prior the final submission. On one side the reviews were with the architects Michael and Till to review the architectural concept and on the other hand with the structural and facade engineers reviewing these concepts that were key for the organizers of the competition. In these meetings the main work was related to concept diagrams, site plan and floorplans, which documentation was improved for the final submission and materialized in 12 DIN A1. The other main task at the beggining of the design process was the physical model of the surrounding buildings and the development of different design concepts of the two towers, which helped us to find the final design.

S⋅M⋅L PAVILION

COMPETITION 2021 Concéntrico 07

“SML Pavilion” was born as a reflection of the urban environment and the city. To highlight the place, it appropriates the immediate environment and encourages “living” it. Two pre-existing elements, one as a guideline from which to start the project (the tree) and the other as a generator (the sculpture) from which to promote experiences and perspectives around the first, promote the preamble to the concept of the pavilion. Guarantee of accessibility and catalyst of the next architectural environment. The pavilion has total flexibility and integration to adapt to different situations within the festival (installations, exhibitions, meetings, activities and performances), since its attribute as a milestone is reflected in its parts and in the whole.

Lighting in Architecture Installation inside FAUP’s building Porto, Portugal TEAM Miquel Lloret | Carlos Gavilán | Jorge Arribas COMPETITION 2018 School of Architecture. University of Porto

The proposed installation is organized into sequences of elements following the radial lines of the semicircle at the room designed by Siza, highlighting the direction between the two entrances. The main element is the cardboard tube, in immediate formal and dimensional reference to the lighting that is presented. At any time, a sensory reverberation between the room and this piece is sought in the search for an intuitive and immediate association of the elements of the set and the light source. The diameter of the lamp (33 cm) has been taken as the module, forming a series of elements that invite informal sitting and place the viewer’s view on the plane of the luminaire. The rips on the tubes with interior light links the seating plane and the plane of the main light source by a succession of lights that gradually increase in intensity towards the center of the semi-circular arc of the room, creating a counterpoint to the daylight focus with a dynamic visual sensation that accentuates it.

The structure that can be used by children as well as by adults. With its numerous configurations, standarisation, lightweight and the ease to build it allow the children develop a spatial sensitivity, the builder instinct and the contact with materials and nature. The available configurations allow children and adults to share, enjoy and collaborate together in its configuration, that due to its vast number of types permit to begin the construction without having a certain end in advance. For that reason the most important is the process of construction instead of the final shape, allowing that everyone that takes part can suggest a new cardboard tube structure configuration, a variation in the openings or a new disposition of the cardboard boxes.

The generated space provide a shelter, as it is a house, a tent or a room. As in it we can play with different elements that are friendly with different types of users, allowing them to design their own spaces (with objects, books or hanging things on the structure) and share them. Each of the elements that configure the space (structure, enclosure and furniture, similarly to skin, skeleton and interior) contribute to the discovery by children, as well as allowing adults to rediscover their child view.

MASTER THESIS SS2020 Dept. Architectural Projects UPV

In order to connect the different buildings between the two new squares with the surrounding streets appears a minimum built space on the ground floor level creating new routes. The project reflects the character of the place in which it is located, favoring the interrelation between people and the protection of heritage. Hence, it takes as a reference singularities of the neighborhood such as: the variation in heights, the irregular geometry and the relationship with the preexistence. At the same time the school itself becomes an educational element that can be incorporated into teaching, favoring open spaces for different uses, opening the school to the neighborhood and the relationship of the proposal with the heritage. The project proposes different functions and buildings, with rehabilitation of existing buildings and new buildings that include the following: - Offices building - Classrooms building - Auditorium - Library - Exhibitions - Administration - Bookstore - Student house - Residence for researchers - Museum of the Water-powered mill Exposiciones

STUDIO PROJECT SS2017 Dept. Architectural Projects UPV

Inegrated into the landscape, the view of the whole highlights the particularity of the place, the encounter between a more anthropized landscape –the agricultural terraces– with a more natural landscape –the pine forest. Both are the starting point of the project and determine every decision of the project. In addition to adapt to the existing topography, the project introduce two types of environment. On one hand, the flat terrain of the terraces have the possibility of being used as recreational spaces or horizontal circulation areas, while the land that appears in the form of embankments in the terraces themselves helps to bring the natural environment into the room. The concrete retaining walls serve both as element to retain the soil and as the support of the structure, as well as a way to keep the rhythm and the appearance of the concrete block walls of the existing terraces. Both the color and the linearity defined by the formwork, the walls provide continuity with the order established in the existing walls. Respect for the existing and the willingness to be a project with little presence in the landscape means that the terrace and the walls that define it are the minimum unit –the room.

Experimental Structures Pavilion for the Structural Membranes Conference 2017 Muncih, Germany

STUDIO PROJECT SS2016 Chair of Structural Design TUM

This project highlights the benefits and advantages of a strained gridshell. As the pavilion is for an event related with gridshells it has been considered on one side as a construction that can be build by the participants in this event. For that reason it is conceived as a simple structure and construction process where unskilled people is able to do. On the other side, as it is located in a public space it provides an interesting covered space for the public. In addition to this, the construction method and the generated spaces use the existing urban furniture either as a part of the construction itself (benches as supports) or the benches in between that are useful for the pavilion itself for sitting. Finally, the shape is designed as a boundary between people that require more silence and intimidty and people that walk through the street. It is at the same time a physical boundary from the traffic, as well as a transparent boundary between people that go out from the building and people that just is attracted by the pavilion while they walk. The structure generates two different spaces, one protected from the sun and the noise and other more opened to the public square allowing people to interact with it. The organic shape is thought as an attraction for the people that walks through the street. The symmetrical shape in the longitudinal direction tries not to look symmetrical applying a simple process to create the shape (twist). As it is a structure able to be build by unskilled people, everything on the ground and getting the shape at the same time the structure is being raised.

The pavilion is conceived as an integrated structure among the other existing furniture that can provide a shelter in the big square. The pavilion is located in the direction of the facade of the building with the idea to be easy to go through the square and also to be easy to use the proposed space. The pavilion consists of a strained gridshell made from initially straight members and curved in site. For that reason, the method used for the form finding was the technique of dynamic relaxation. The gridshell uses long, slender, continuous wood laths arranged in a grid. These laths, or structural splines, are both flexible and strong.

Membrane Structures Pavilion for the Structural Membranes Conference 2017 Munich, Germany TEAM Miquel Lloret | Johannes Wawrzinek COURSE SS2016 Chair of Structural Design | Chair of Structural Analysis TUM This project is conceived as a temporary pavilion, as it is for a temporary event. For that reason the structure is designed in order to be lightweight as well as modular. As it can be either used in further events or be extended according to need. As the requeriment for the structure is to be of about 300 -500 m2 the dimension of each of the seven modules is 6,5 x 6,5 m in order to reach this requeriment. As the pavilion must be located in the courtyard of the main campus of TUM, the chosen location tries to be a space where the feeling of integration is essential. For that reason, and due to the current use of the stairs the pavilion covers in its totallity this zone, providing shade on it, as its use will be in the summer period. The pavilion serve as a boundary between the upper square and the eventual traffic that occurs on the inner street. It is designed to be a linear pavilion that helps to order the movement of people from one side to the other of the main campus, acting as a loggia.

STUDIO PROJECT WS2015 Associate Professorship of Architectural Design & Building Envelope TUM The entire project is based on three main concepts. The proposed design tries to show an adaptive response in three scales. In addition to the three scales, the principles of natural ventilation and use of daylight remains unalterable. AAA Firstly, the plot is treated as a public space that is able to change and where, due to the absence of other buildings or obstacles, the square generated can be used for different kind of events. Concerning the building and taking the refurbishment of the offices as the starting point for the design the office as well as the facade are related.

AAA The facade is conceived as a double skin facade with a shading device in the inner space between the two skins in the entire perimeter of the building envelope. Its design is based on an element that is responsive to the weather conditions. The main elements are vertical lamellas that bend depending on weather conditions but also on its respective side of the building making it an iconic landmark, that looks the same from all the sides. This is an important condition due to its location on a main entrance to the city of Munich.

AAA On one side the office is conceived as a contemporary office where the variety of spaces allow different configurations. The minimum office comprise the distance between three columns, that means that each side of the floor plan contains three small offices, but also a terrace linked to a lounge bar for informal meetings in the NE side or a terrace for informal working looking in front of the park in the SE side. Related to this typical floor the upper floor next to this and above the lounge bar has a meeting room for formal meetings. This configuration of offices, where rooms are separated by movable walls allow to grow horizontally or vertically depending on the company size. In case the office starts to grow the terraces are used for comunicating between floors of the same office, meanwhile it doesn’t grow this spaces (terraces, lounge bar and meeting room) are shared for workers of different floors.

Must a monument be made of stone and steel, or can it not be just as human, or even invisible? Momentalism stands for the monumental in the moment as well as for the momentary in the monument. Momentalism is more work than style. Momentalism o.D. also momentalized the first o.D. Podcast dedicated to the artist Iassen Markov. o.D. stands for “On Demand” and is a new architecture magazine that will be published in podcast format from January 2016. o.D. extends the range of architectural journalism. It’s about testing how you look at architecture when you can’t see it, figuring out what you can tell about architecture without addressing it purely on architectural issues.

The INSIDE\OUT pavilion is the first architectural gridshell, that utilizes so called “asymptotic curves” on a minimal surface design. This new construction technique enables a simple fabrication and construction process: All lamellas can be fabricated as flat and straight elements. They are elastically bent during the construction process. All joints are identical and meet at 90 degrees.
