PALAFOLLS PUBLIC LIBRARY Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Palafolls, Barcelona, Spain Palafolls Town Hall 2002 - 2007 Direct Commisions, New Building Architectural and landscape design Initial and Detailed Design, Site supervision 700sqm building, 850sqm landscape 9.000.000â‚Ź

The area where the library is built is Esplanes Park on the outskirts of Palafolls, a place with great natural value, to the south, the presence of agricultural land and the river delta Tordela; and to the west, a river park. The project idea was to blend the new intervention with the existing landscape and at the same time make this space unique with a close relationship to the nature that surrounds it. The library comprises about 700 square meters, divided into areas for adults, children, newspaper conference room, relaxation areas, storage spaces and services, in a labyrinthine manner. Through a non-linear succession of gardens and dividing walls, and the exterior park seeps inside different internal areas. The library is thus presented as one big classroom, in which natural light enters from many different directions, in close contact with the patios, with their low walls, while protecting the visitor, not impede the view of the environment.

SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT BUILDING Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Edinburgh, Scotland The Scottish Executive Government 1998 - 2004 First Prize in Competition, New Building Architectural and landscape design Initial and Detailed Design, Site supervision 30000sqm 320.450.000€

In 1998 EMBT won the bid to design the new Edinburgh Parliament building. The proposal generated great enthusiasm due to its organic capacity to combine existing elements with new technologies through the contemporary and unique language of the Barcelona studio. The project’s development centered on reflecting the characteristics of the country and its inhabitants via a new way of building that was directly linked to the land itself. This close tie to the site and its setting would, when the adjacent distillery is demolished, enable the generation of multiple perspective lines on the city. Intentionally, a contrast is sought, a conceptual distance, between the new construction and Holyrood Palace, the twelfth-century royal residence that has been renovated many times. Unlike the palace, which dominates the landscape, the new Scottish Parliament drops literally into the hillside terrain, the lowest part of Arthur’s Seat, and appears to sprout from the living stone.

Barcelona, Spain Foment de Ciutat Vella S.A. 1998 - 2004 First Prize in Competition, Rehabilitation Architectural and Urban plan design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 4000sqm Housing, 1600sqm Market 14.435.000â‚Ź

A competition was opened to restore the Santa Caterina city market located in the old quarter of Barcelona in 1997. EMBT won the bid with a proposal that aimed at incorporating the extreme complexity of the setting itself by creating a commercial market complemented by a residential zone and public spaces that integrated all the activities of the neighborhood. The project maintains parts of the existing structure and the architects proposed a new and creative render of the area which respected the history and context of the site. The proposal superimposes new architecture on old, mixes them, and comes up with a conglomerate, a hybrid that accentuates usefulness and is contemporary. The interior distribution of the market was reorganized; there are fewer stands but the access and service systems are rationalized; the surface area of public spaces gains ground and communicates with the Avinguda Francesc CambĂł, an important transitional vein in the neighborhood also surrounded by a dense network of narrow streets.

GAS NATURAL OFFICE BUILDING Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Barcelona, Spain Gas Natural SDG. SP Torre Marenostrum S.L. 1999 - 2007 First Prize in Competition, New Building Architectural and landscape design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 51000sqm 60.000.000â‚Ź

The new headquarters of Gas Natural is a tower of 22 stories, 86 meters high. EMBT created this project for the company in the Barceloneta neighborhood, very close to the seafront. The project called to design a unique tower capable of enriching the city skyline and also respecting the small dimensions of the buildings that make up the district of Barceloneta, an area where fishermens families’ houses coexist with fivestory apartment blocks. From the outset, the project was designed to be compatible with these two main constraints. This meant planning for different volumes with different sizes and characteristics that would still make up a definite unit. The work thus responds to different scales and enables the establishment of a physical dialogue with the nearby buildings. But it also rises up as a new city landmark. Finally, special attention was given to the new exterior spaces.

VIGO UNIVERSITY CAMPUS Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Vigo, Spain Universidade Vigo 1999 - 2003 Direct Commisions, New Building Architectural and Landscape design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 60000sqm 16.000.000€

The project analyzed the configuration of the entrance to the campus of the University of Vigo, the transformation of the sports area, urbanization of the new commercial zone, and the introduction of a parking complex. The campus transformed the place into a unified constructed landscape. One of the access ways to this landscape is by way of the sports area, and this includes a wide sweeping reforestation of the terrain as well as the installation of a series of ponds. Thus, the visitor penetrates the complex by way of lush woodland, and the students can exercise among the trees. The commercial area gives the place a mall and residence halls in buildings that conflate with the topography: this is partially accomplished by penetrating the open plaza with a metallic mesh canopy held up by columns and roofed in tropical wood. The opaque facades of the different buildings are covered in concrete faced in granite. The roofs, also of concrete serve as home to the restaurant, accessed by the central staircase of the assembly.

RECTOR OFFICE AT VIGO UNIVERSITY CAMPUS Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Vigo, Spain Universidade Vigo 2002 - 2006 Direct Commisions, New Building Architectural design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 36000sqm 9.000.000€

This building is a piece of the University Campus of Vigo, a rectangle that bows on the back part to adapt itself to the form of the area, following the guidelines of the classroom buildings. The façades are composed of concrete whose texture echoes the decomposition of the Mondariz granite hung from the metal profile and oak carpentries in a T form, with the uppermost part of the granite rising over the profile of the roof. The play of concrete and oak continue into the interior, where the geometry of the stairs connect the levels and spaces which are flooded with the light from above. The building’s program includes the chancellor’s and vice-chancellor’s offices, the press office, the general secretary and other administrative personnel, and meeting rooms arranged in a radial form. Some spaces open to others and all spectacularly frame views through the structure. Natural light penetrates everything. The main hall is a ramped auditorium that is projected over the larger spaces between the tripartite structure in a T form, whose top wall is in the opposite direction of the stairs and creates an impressive form on the lateral façade.

HAFENCITY PUBLIC SPACES Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Hafencity, Hamburg, Germany Hafencity Hamburg GmbH 2002 - In Progress First Prize in Competition, new project Architectural and Landscape design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 150000sqm 8.600.000€

The community overseeing the development of the Port of Hamburg set up a competition to regenerate and urbanize the shores of the River Elbe in the town center. The proposal launched by the EMBT won with a project that stood out by its offer of a great diversity of spaces that would allow Hamburg’s inhabitants and visitors to take advantage of the nearby waterway. The intervention is organized on three levels: at 0 meters, at sea level there are gigantic platforms with access for small ships and recreational boats. On the line of docks, at 4.5 meters above sea level, two rest areas were designed, and on the 7.5 meter (street) level, avenues were laid out, and planted spaces with pergolas that could accompany city visitors on their tours. A system of ramps, stairways, and catwalks connect the different levels. One of the project’s most welcome features is the vegetation: there are many different types and the addition will change the look of the port throughout the seasons of the year, a note of color and contrasts for the city.

SPANISH PAVILION FOR EXPO SHANGHAI 2010 Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Shanghai, China SEEI (State Society for International Exhibitions) 2010 First Prize in Competition, New Building Architectural design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 5190sqm 18.000.000€

The Spanish Pavilion for the 2010 World Expo of Shanghai sought to reflect upon the Spanish climate, as well as to recover the extraordinary craft of wickerwork in order to bring it back to life and to reinvent it as a new construction technique. This building sought to play with the incredible potential of wickerwork. Furthermore, it sought to introduce wicker as a sustainable and viable material concept that would remain present throughout the building. Basketry techniques, handcrafts with natural fibers, are a global tradition shared by cultures of all ages. Even though they vary from region to region, they occur in similar ways East and West. In this sense, the material choice for the pavilion attempted to bridge between two cultures, the Spanish (visiting) and the Chinese (the host). The Spanish Pavilion has a usable area of 7,500m2. Aside from the spaces destined to hold the main exhibits, the pavilion is fitted out to host official receptions with an auditorium, a conference room, a press room, and support area.

DIAGONAL MAR PARK Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Barcelona, Spain Diagonal Mar / Hines 1997 - 2002 Direct Commissions, new project Architectural and Landscape design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 14000sqm 18.000.000€

For the construction of the installations of the 2004 Forum of Cultures, Barcelona City Council recovered a series of partially abandoned industrial lots near the sea. The urban renovation carried out on these lots was to create a new neighborhood on the shores of the Mediterranean where a variety of activities are available. To connect Avinguda Diagonal, which crosses the whole city, with the beach, a large park was created. EMBT organized the site via a road system that extends in different directions on a tree-like pattern. The main avenue directly connects the Avinguda Diagonal with the sea and assigned a pedestrian bridge that passes over the Ronda Litoral, a ring–road around the city. A series of spaces come off the intersection of the roads at the points where they join the park. Here skating rinks were installed as well as sport fields flanked by bicycle lanes. Water is present in almost every part of the park whether in the guise of small ponds or as a large lake that accompanies the main avenue along its length.

UTRECHT TOWN HALL Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Utrecht, Netherlands Utrecht Town Council 1997 - 2000 First Prize In Competition, Rehabilitation Architectural design Initial and Detailed Design Site Supervision 6120sqm 9.030.000â‚Ź

EMBT was commissioned to enlarge the Town Hall of Utrecht, which previously did not meet the needs of a larger operation and which would benefit from the technical advances necessary for an official entity. The aim of the project involved a rediscovery of the value of interior spaces in the neoclassical building that was already standing. This was perhaps especially true of the medieval room, which had already been previously rehabilitated throughout its history. Additionally, the idea was to return to the idea of a municipal office as a conglomerate of different city structures, which blended different styles and materials as a reflection of the diversity of building arts in the Dutch town. To bring this into being, materials like bricks and jambs and lintels of stone that came from the demolition of parts of the existing building were preserved and reassembled. Due to the functional complexity involved, a redistribution of the activities was decided on and the ground floor became a weave of public spaces, like a covered urban network, while the first floor housed the political offices.

BARAJAS SOCIAL HOUSING BLOCK Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Madrid, Spain Empresa Municipal de Vivienda y Suelo de Madrid S.A 2007 - 2013 Direct Commissions, New Building Architectural and Landscape design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 15560sqm 9.600.000€

The apartment building, located in Barajas in the group of blocks under the management of the new extension of Barajas, was initially conceived to catch the light, wind and outdoor life. Based on the urban zoning for this block, the building was conceptualized as a game where the apartments would act as blocks on top of five floor slabs creating interspersed terraces and open spaces. The building is organized around open corridors of the old “corralas”. This condition creates a relationship between the neighbors and new living spaces. The apartments have a human character that comes from its architectonic qualities and new common spaces: the hallways, terraces and central courtyard. Thermal comfort and lighting are gained through the naturally favorable orientation of the façade to the south and east, and the openings opposite the main side of the housing, providing cross ventilation. These solutions save on the costs of artificial air conditioning throughout much of the year.

FIGUERES SOCIAL HOUSING BLOCK Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Figueres, Spain Institut Català del Sòl 2001 - 2007 Direct Commissions, New Building Architectural design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 6200sqm 4.500.000 €

The project was located in a restricted space between the city and countryside, in the area of l’Horta de l’Hospital, where there were still roads without tarmac in between stone walls. It was a place that was apparently losing its identity; the new urban intervention had to preserve the area’s memory. We proposed a building with 48 apartments, of sizes between 40 and 70m, to be available for rental. With a varying height that creates topography through the roof, and porticos on the ground floor which allow connection to the street, green spaces and the circular plaza. Given the length and narrowness of the site, the block extends out rather like a line which wraps around itself, closing off a more private space where the service areas of the dwellings are positioned. Each dwelling arises from the idea of a long and narrow habitable cell (8m wide and 5m deep) that allows a great facade that looks onto the street, opposite the interior circulation corridor.

CAMPER STORE BARCELONA Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area: Cost:

Barcelona, Spain Camper store 2010 - 2011 Direct Commissions, New Building Architectural design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 100sqm 240.000 €

Camper has much to do with “el campo”, that is the countryside, the fields, to walk in the fields, and so we imagined shoes stepping on irregular surfaces, like when we walk on earth. Camper has gotten us used to play, smile, see fashion with children’s eyes… we imagined trying on shoes in front of the twisted mirrors of an amusement park, here I am tall tall, here short short, and that’s how wobbly reflecting surfaces appeared in the project. Later, we visited Camper´s factory to see how shoes are made. There we understood we wanted to build our new store the same way Camper shoes are built in Mallorca: flat leather sheets are cut and, like magic, with a couple of stitches and a mould, they become beautiful tridimensional wrappings! We cut different shoe forms, with hills, without hills, tall, short, for men, for women, we put those flat profiles one next to the other, and that is how our the volume of our new Camper store appeared. Its construction was unusual, but very simple MDF sheets cut like shoes, fixed one next to each other transform into benches, tables, surfaces and lots of crazy mirrors.

Barcelona, Spain L’Oréal España S.A. 2011 - 2013 First Prize In Competition, Rehabilitation Architectural design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 1100sqm 1.800.000€

The new L’Oréal Academy is located in a very important area of the city of Barcelona, on Corsega Street, 302, between Paseo de Gracia and Avenida Diagonal. The basic objective of the project was to positively impact the user, through a spectacular site that would provide good feelings, and respect the functional needs and practices of an academy of L’Oréal. Its concept is based on overall beauty. Hair in particular, was the inspiring element to create a unique space of 1.100m2 spread over the ground floor and first floor. The ground floor houses a public program with the training rooms and the first floor contains a program that includes the offices and skincare. The starting point was developing various collages to illustrate L’Oréal’s history along its hundred years of existence. The collages were composed of images and fragments of hair, scissors, women, trying to reveal the aspirations of the salon.

The new auditorium with its main entrance foyer completes the program of the youth music school, which was finished in 2000. The extension, designed 10 years after the original project, is located in the narrow space between the old school and the new youth music school and creates a new passage between them. A folded entrance roof covers the foyer and connects with the ramp of the existing music school in the upper floor. The auditorium is elevated to the first floor, allowing for an open space on the ground floor that contains the main foyer and a large multipurpose space. This space is visible as an irregular round shape with a gallery level. The brick facade refers in material and shape to the existing buildings built 10 years ago. A visible ornamentation in the bricks refers to the graphic of sound waves and indicates the content of the building in its exterior image.

Esch Sur Azlette, Luxemburg Arcelor 2005 - 2006 Direct Commissions, New Building Architectural design Initial and Detailed Design, Site Supervision 500 sqm 2.200.000â‚Ź

This project was developed as a exhibition space for the centenary of the city of EschSur-Azlette in Luxembourg. The pavilion was to be used as an art gallery after the exhibition. Arcelor is known as one of the most important steel companies in the world, and it was founded in this small city located in south of Luxembourg. The growth and development of the city has been strongly linked to the company. The project started from catching images of the growth and geometry of the site. The pavilion is situated between a path of the park and wild part (recapturing nature) of the new centenary park. At the same time, the pavilion is situated on an important axis of the city, that the pavilion itself extends. Our first image of the space was to rise up from the earth and take form as an extended path of the park. This image helped us to forge connections between some points of the park and offering small public space under the main space of the pavilion.

Fudan is part of a network of universities and their respective buildings located in Shanghai, it is also a very special university with an extensive history and a very unique character. Aside from the main campus, there are two new campuses. These campuses are not closely located, they are separate pieces, and so in order to establish a connection the buildings must convey the identity of Fudan and contemporary life. The master plan for this new zone defines the density and heights. The new buildings must have a relationship to the surrounding buildings, the volumes must relate to the urban context, and be adjustable to the different functions. We modified the volumes of the master plan within the given specification to create that mixture. The buildings become part of a network of connections, instead of forming borders. The public life within the new campus buildings is generated under the roof structure within the block.

The new Turin-Lyon railway line constitutes one of the most interesting and discussed infrastructural projects of the last decades at an Italian and European level. It is without doubt an extremely delicate intervention, at the centre of strong criticism and each aspect of it is touching on important balances. The International Train Station of SUSA is one of the most recent endeavors of the project, and is the symbol of a positive attitude of the requalification and promotion of the territory of the Susa valley. This spirit, together with the necessity of a careful design, is attentive to the point of view of the local population.

The city of Naples embarking on the regeneration of city life on an existing urban megastructure. The Centro Direzionale area, where the new metro station will be located, is a complex of towers and platforms designed in the 70s. This new station would be an improvement in the connectivity between this area and Naples’ town centre. The new public spaces would allow different, fresher uses. Our aim is to improve the access and appearance of public transport in order to make it more attractive to use. The station’s great roof creates shaded resting areas at the level of the square, a square that is currently hardly usable during the hot spring and summer weather as it is completely exposed to the sun. The new surrounding green areas will help to control the temperature. The roof lets natural light in, giving the station a hybrid character of interior and exterior, whilst also reducing the cost of artificial lighting during the day.

ITALIAN PAVILION FOR EXPO MILAN 2015 Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area:

Milan, Italy Expo Milano 2015 2013 Second Prize in Competition, New Building Architectural design Initial Design 55000sqm

The general formal principle of the building concentrates itself in an expression of a great elegance and beauty through concepts that are close to classical principles: excellence, serenity and strength. These intentions are refreshingly converse to the exhibition schemes that had such “free forms of the recent past, that have lead architecture to forget its fundamental principles in favor of seeking a digital expression of short range and duration. Due to these concerns the symbol with which the building is merging is the Greek Doric column, with its conforming drums, its intense streaks and its impressive expressiveness and intensity, almost metaphysical. The intention was to develop an iconic architecture of great beauty and personality, not incompatible with the search of the image of beautiful severity, strength and contemporary identity, without waste or provocative winks to trends that could rapidly fade.

Kuwait is a country of vast deserts and seas, from which are harvested its vital energy resources. The ideas of protection and symbolism the shemagh represent, have inspired an organic form which has since evolved into the undulating shape of the pavilion. The strength and beauty of the desert flower Iris has inspired the elegant yet strong structure of the Kuwait Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015. As desert shelters naturally provide protection from severe climate, the elegant fabrics covering the pavilion create a comfortable and vibrant atmosphere. This is manifested in the facinating spaces created inside; spaces are revealed to the user much like how a life-giving oasis is unveiled from behind desert sand dunes. The facade of the pavilion consists of stripes inspired by the traditional weaving methods of Kuwaitis but utlize the latest technological material. The envelope is constructed of a flexible thermoplastic polymer covering an organic fiber.

The painter Zhang Da Qian was born in Neijiang. On April 2010, Excellence group invited EMBT to design Zhang Da Qian’s museum in Neijiang city, the painter’s hometown. The design philosophy behind the museum was to integrate the cultural essence of East and West and build expressing the past and the future. The site is located peak of Dong Tong Lu, Yuan mountain, west of Xi Lin monastery, south of the Tuo River. The museum is to be the landmark of the city. The museum should grow from the existing tea house and extend its pavilions over and around a garden that moves topographically on different levels, enclosing some of the old trees within its scheme. The motives and gestures extracted from Zhang Da Qian’s paintings will shape the forms of the laminated bamboo ribs that form the vertical structure, while the painter’s interpretation of Picasso’s face informs the geometries of the plan.

TIANJIN NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area:

Tianjin, China Tianjin Town Hall 2013 Second Prize in Competition, New Building Architectural design Initial Design 105000sqm

“Life begins with water.” Since ancient times, human life has had a bond with water. In Chinese mythology, there are many mythological figures related to the sea. Simultaneously, the exploration, utilization and protection of marine resources is a very important agenda in establishing the strong image of a country. In Tianjin, the city that since ancient times has existed as the port to enter China, there is an opportunity to create another milestone building of China’s maritime history, the National Maritime Museum. The concept came from the study of the shape of the wave, the uninterrupted movement of the ocean that solely gives birth to life on Earth. Therefore, we thought about how to let people’s experience when they are in the building, both inside and outside, feel like exposure to the world of the ocean. At the same time, people can explore the craving to understand the ocean’s mystery and vastness. The form of the building is completed with the movement of people circulation through the building and creating the random motion within this oceanic world.

DESIGN EXCELLENCE - ONE ALFRED STREET Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area:

Sidney, Australia Private 2010 Second Prize in Competition, New Building Architectural design Initial Design 55000sqm

The built form has to do with light, air and the comprehension that the possible views from this site to residential apartments adds to the amenability. It is in the public interest to enable residential comfort by virtue of a view; a position; a certain calmness and repose. The site already makes that offering and thereafter it is in the understanding of the shapes of plans that the ability to capture the potential of the form exists. Flowers reach out to seek the sunlight and provide an elegant form in light, of soft radial forms. Each plan begins with the core, the stem of the building that moves forward to be a living room. The diagonal view, as Louis Kahn told, creates the sense of depth and intimacy to the plan; the softness of a curve gives rise to gradual light against the important yielding living room wall, which separates the sleeping quarters in a leaf-like manner.

The House of the Music is a house for the musicians of Gandia, a city with a strong musical tradition. Gandia has many musical bands and in almost every family there is a relative who either plays in a band or studies in the conservatory. This culture requires a building which meets all the needs of the citizens so the program includes a music school, a conservatory and an auditorium. The building is built in concrete with inspiration from musical imagery and its setting on the Beniopa Passeig de Gandia, gazing at the Serra Falconera. Therefore, the facade is designed with fragments of metal inspired by wind instruments. The lecture rooms breath the sea breeze and are located in both the east and the north facades while the auditorium, in the west, can be used as an open or closed concert hall facing the mountain range or as an outdoors auditorium.

The basic idea was the preservation and revitalization of the maximum of the industrial complex, a valuable architectonic heritage, by introducing a new intervention in the same way industrial architecture has always done. This intervention would take place in a space that has already been inhabited, which has been used as a working space for more than 150 years and which has a memory that we would like to transfer. The aim of the project is to enhance the quality of the public spaces that the industrial complex already has. These public spaces have to be strengthened so that public space becomes the anteroom of the public building. Every single architectural renovation entails a renovation of its surrounding area. The quality of the public space is therefore considered the starting point. The exhibition spaces take up the majority of the old space of the first industrial warehouses and the multifunctional halls related to the exhibitions are located on an upper level.

We chose an architecture that links the building with the environment for inspiration and design motifs between images that are taken from the surroundings. A study led to search for images of geology and vegetation, as well as related literature to surfing in Biarritz, we have studied the character of the Baron de l’Espee and Chateau d’Ilbarritz, etc. Found texts, images, multiple interventions were performed on the setting of this place. But finally, it was the determination to create topography that prevailed in the work. There was an overriding desire to see the building immersed in a respectful environment with the surrounding nature. That desire has been preserved from the first sketches to the choice of materials without losing the opportunity to make an attractive architecture that favors the development of sport and surf culture.

When it arrives in the Expo area it becomes a circle and turns into the great roof of Future Energy. We choose not to have an object as the symbol for Astana’s Expo, but a wonderful new roof, a great glazed pergola, which brings people together and where activities can take place during the whole year. This round wonderful space is the best symbol for the Third Industrial Revolution, which is about circular enconomy, in a closed circle in which energy is created, bought and sold by consumers. Circles are thus the main symbols of our proposal.

The Parish complex of San Giacomo is proposed as a catalyst for the area in which it is introduced, creating a new fulcrum that is capable of creating identity within the local community by promo-ting socialization, education and interaction. The building is de-signed to have a welcoming presence that is open to the people, doing so through the use of lightweight organic architecture that contrasts with the robust and compact materiality of the historiÂŹcally important preexisting Ferrara. The slim profiles of subtle trees encloses the area, creating an intimate and familiar environment where the building controls the scene with sculptural forms while maintaining a dialogue with the surrounding nature by using a formal language inspired by it. The building is positioned in both a visual and spiritual axis with the new bridge and the city beyond the river, but access is achieved via two lateral axes that join the design of the square to the church, acting as two arms open to the community.

Shenzhen, China Shen Zhen Excellence Kang He Investment and Development Pty. Ltd 2010 First Prize in Competition, New Building Architecture design Initial Design 90000sqm 49.000.000 €

The client, Excellence Group, the largest property developer in the Chinese city of Shenzhen’s Central Business District, requested a tower of 90,000 m2 and 220 m high with a commercial and office program. The floor plan of the “Bamboo tower” is like a “soft square”. Each floor is slightly different in shape from the next, but has approximately the same surface area. The tower gives the impression of “rotating”. Structural Pillars are perimetral, touching the interior and exterior façade. In section they are slightly arched. This is obtained by a polygonal module system: (segments of straight pillars every floor). External vertical glass supports are cladded in steel and they look like “bamboo” from a distance. In Benedetta Tagliabue´s words: “This project has a strong iconic component and responds to a peculiar geometry, which reflects an effect of torsion and is distantly inspired by the apparent movement of the wicker panels of the Spanish Pavilion in Shanghai.” EMBT proposed materials like bamboo or ceramic, however the developer is more inclined towards a Steel and glass combination. Therefore, EMBT have experimented with designs which take inspiration from the bamboo and represent it through the clients preferred materials.

TAICHUNG TOWER Location: Client: Date: Category: Services: Scope: Area:

Taichung, Taiwan Private 2012 - In progress Direct Commisions, New Building Architecture design Initial and Detailed Design 29700m2

In surroundings composed mainly of vertical buildings our tower will appear, growing upwards like the Spanish “castellars”. The building opens itself to the urban landscape through its form, an opening curved form. This allows it to dialogue and establish a connection with the surrounding vertical buildings. Our intervention should be a dynamic and flexible part of the city. Since the beginning of the project, the main idea was the symbiosis between the fragmentation and re-composition of the nature and buildings as pine trees. Starting from the image of a pine tree forest, the building transforms itself with the idea of vertical density and gently starts to disappear into the sky through its reflectivity. The collages show the idea that from the ground floor, a forest seems to appear and the tree trunks that grow upwards to construct the tower. The photomontages and drawing fragments have great importance in the representation of the Taichung Tower, in an early phase these collages help to understand the figure of the tower and its relation to the context of the project. In a second phase, we started studying how the facade concept could be connected with the main concept, through more conventional collages. So we started to interplay between the tree drawings and the holes, which resulted in the proposal that we have today. As Miralles once described... “the beginning of the dialogue between thought and construction.”
