S E A T T L E

Seattle is a West Coast seaport city and the seat of King County. With an estimated 662,400 residents as of 2015, Seattle is the largest city in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America. As of July 2013 it was the fastest-growing major city in the United States, and remained in the top five in May 2015 with an annual growth rate of 2.1%. The Seattle metropolitan area of around 3.6 million inhabitants is the 15th largest metropolitan area in the United States. The city is situated on a narrow isthmus between Puget Sound (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canada–United States border. A major gateway for trade with Asia, Seattle is the 8th largest port in the United States and 9th largest in North America in terms of container handling.

D E V E LO P M E N T In the beginning stages, my inspiration came from Seattle’s rich culture of technology. Without much luck, I started to try some more sophisticated approaches that came from the fact that Seattle is the most literate city in the United States. My final mark was drawn from Seattle’s iconic skyline, with the top curve of the ‘S’ and the sideways ‘E’ taking the shape of the space needle in an abstract way, and the larger, towering ‘A’ representing Mount Rainier towering in the distance.

LETTERMARK

This design was based off of Seattle’s iconic skyline. The top curve of the ‘S’ combined with the upper arm of the ‘E’ take the form of a more abstract space needle, while the apex of the A breakin through the boundaries of the mark is representative of Mount Rainier.

T Y P E FAC E Seattle currently holds the title for the most literate city in the United States; 53.8% of Seattleites have a Bachelors degree or higher. I chose Archer as my companion font because it has a scholarly feel due to its similarity to the font on a typewriter or that of vintage newsprint.
