MAKE A DIFFERENCE: VOLUNTEER! Do you have a little time to help out? Volunteering as little as an hour or two a week can make a big difference to the City of Sunnyvale’s Community Services division. You can help us serve more children, families, seniors and teens, provide a wider variety of arts, sports and special interest programming, let more people in the community know about our programs and work more efficiently with limited resources. You’ll benefit, too. You’ll be doing something meaningful. Share your talents. Keep your skills sharp. Learn something new. Add valuable experience to your resume. Meet new people. Earn community service credits for your work. And have fun! We have opportunities for volunteers 13 and older. aquatics Welcome to Sunnyvale Splash ... the City of Sunnyvale’s Aquatics Program. We offer activities for the whole family—youth and adult swim lessons, and recreational swim.

Questions & Answers Q: Where do I register for swim lessons? Register at the Community Center through June 12. Refunds and transfers during this time may be requested at the Community Center. Beginning June 16, all registration will be handled at the individual pool sites during swim lesson times. Please call the pool to find out registration times at each of the facilities (See page 5 for contact information). No class registration, transfers or refunds will be processed at the Community Center after June 12. Q: What level do I register my child for? Read the descriptions provided in the Skill Levels column at the right, and register your child for the class that sounds most like his or her level. If your child is an otter, seal or dolphin, you just need to register for Beginners. On the first day of the class, staff will test each child and split them up according to their level (otter, seals and dolphins). We do not test the more advanced swimmers. If you feel that your child is in the wrong class, please let the Pool Manager know so he or she can test your child for the proper level. Q: What is the child to instructor ratio? Tiny Tots Swim 4:1 Beginning (Otters, Seals and Dolphins) approx 5 : 1 Level 3 and higher 6:1 Q: Why does the second week of each swim lesson session end

on a Thursday? Every other Friday will allow for an extended Recreation Swim day. Extended Recreation Swim is offered at Columbia and Sunnyvale pools from 1:30-4p.m. and at Washington pool from 1:30-5p.m. on 6/27, 7/11, 7/25 & 8/8. Swim participants receive a voucher to allow them to enter recreation swim on the above dates at no cost.

Q: Can I request a specific instructor for my child’s lesson? We cannot accommodate requests for specific instructors. The instructors rotate between levels and times. The Pool Manager does not know who will be teaching the class until the first day of the class. Q:What if I am not happy with the program? Please let the Pool Manager know right away. The Manager will try to resolve the problem. The City of Sunnyvale has a refund policy which is explained on the registration page at the back of this guide. Q: Can my child wear a t-shirt in the pool? For the safety of your child and the maintenance of our pool, t-shirts and other street clothes are not allowed in the pool. Q:What if I registered my child for the wrong level? We will try to find an open class in the right level for your child. However, this may require that you switch times or pools. We will work with you to try and find the best solution for you and your child. Q: Why does my child have to listen to safety skills each session? Water safety instruction is an important facet of our Learnto-Swim program. Our program is based on the Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program which requires instruction in water safety for each level of class. Although some students will hear the same information each time they take the same level class, we strongly believe that you can never have too much safety information. Q: What if my child passes Level 3 and I have registered him or her for the whole summer in that level? Please let the Pool Manager know before you leave the pool that day. The Manager will work with you to find a class to transfer your child into. However, transfers are not automatic. You must initiate it with the Pool Manager. In the event that we cannot find a suitable class for your child, he or she can either take the class that she is registered for again, or you may request a refund.

Q: Does the pool close if it starts raining? Generally, no. We will continue to hold swim lessons. We will close the facility if there is lightning. Q: If my child misses a swim lesson because he is sick or she is

out of town, can they have a make-up class? Unfortunately, we are not able to offer make-up lessons within our class structure.

Q: How warm is the pool? All facilities in Sunnyvale are outdoor pools. They are heated to approximately 80-82° F. Although the outside air temperature may make it seem cooler, the pool temperature is consistently maintained regardless of the weather.

Q: Are lockers and showers available? Yes, there are locker room facilities at each pool. Patrons must supply their own locks and towels. Showers are available for your use. Q: Are there any health restrictions? Persons suffering from infections or contagious disease and illnesses are not permitted in the pool or locker room areas. Q: Can we bring a picnic to the pool? Food and drinks are not permitted in the pool area. However, all of the pools are located in parks that are ideal for a picnic. We ask that you do not bring food, drinks, glass, sharp objects or tobacco products into the pool area. Q: Will the class get to go on the Diving Board? For the pools with diving boards, the last day of each session is Diving Board Day. Each class will have the opportunity to jump off the board on that day. However, children who are not comfortable with this skill will not be required to jump if they don’t want to. Note: Columbia Pool does not have a diving board Q: What can I do to make swimming a safer experience for my child? We strongly recommend that all parents and caregivers be certified in Community First Aid and CPR. This course is offered by the American Red Cross and teaches you what to do in an emergency. Additionally, The California Sports Center offers a wide range of aquatics programs to suit the needs of swimmers of all ages and abilities. California Sports Center’s program is located at: Sunnyvale Swim Complex at Fremont High School 1238 Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road (408) 732-2257. For more information, see page 54. RECREATION SWIM Public recreation swim allows swimmers of all ages the opportunity for casual swimming and water play. Lifeguards are on duty during recreation swim hours. Participants must adhere to all pool rules. Participants must pass our lifeguard-issued swim test, in order to swim in the deep end of the pool. SWIM TEST Participants who wish to swim in the deep end of the pool must pass our lifeguard-issued swim test. Swim test will consist of the following 3 skills: • Jump into water above head and recover • Swim 25 yards • Tread water for 1 minute

POOL RULES Children age 6 and younger must be directly supervised by a parent/guardian while in the pool. The parent/guardian must accompany the child in the water and remain within arm’s length of the child. • We strongly advise that all parents closely monitor their child’s activities in the pool, regardless of the age. This is especially true for beginner swimmers. • Children who are not toilet trained or who are under the age of 3 must wear approved swim diapers and plastic swim cover beneath their swimsuit. • Please do not enter the pool if you have an infectious disease, bandage, open blisters or sores. • Flotation devices including water wings, padded swimsuits and inner-tubes are not permitted with the exception of US Coast guard-approved lifejackets. • With the exception of service animals, animals are not allowed in the facility. • Food, drinks, glass, sharp objects or tobacco products are not permitted in the pool area. DIVING BOARD RULES • Diving is only allowed in the deep end of the pool. • One person is allowed on the diving board at a time. • One bounce on the board is permitted. • Jump or dive straight off and swim to the nearest side. FOR YOUR SAFETY • Please walk at all times on the pool deck. • Fighting, roughhousing, chicken fighting, screaming, profanity and pretending to drown is NOT permitted in the facility. • Appropriate swim attire is required when entering the pool. • T-shirts worn over swimsuits and other street clothes are not allowed. The lifeguard on duty is in full charge. Failure to comply with the lifeguard’s requests may result in the participant being asked to leave the pool area without a refund. Lifeguards on deck are there to watch the pool. Please direct questions to the Pool Manager located in the pool office.

aquatics Skill Levels

Parent & Tot • Ages 6 mo. to 4 years Parent & Tot is the first level in our Learn-to-Swim program. These classes give parents and children an opportunity to explore and become comfortable in a pool. The instructor presents skills and techniques for parents to use with their children. Participants are also given an opportunity to work on beginning swimming skills in preparation for a Tiny Tots or Beginner level swim class. Parents must stay in the water with their children, at a ratio of one parent per child. Tiny Tots Swim • Age 3 This class is designed for 3-year olds who are ready to transition from Parent & Tot swim classes. Skills covered include assisted front and back floats, submerging to retrieve objects and an introduction to arm and leg actions for front and back crawl. Participants must be comfortable being in the water without a parent. Beginner • Ages 4-15 (Levels 1-2) • Otters: No swimming experience is necessary. Otters work on assisted front floats, back floats and submerging for objects. Arm and leg actions for front crawl will be introduced, and water safety and pool rules will be discussed. • Seals: These swimmers will work on unassisted front and back floats. Explorations of deep water, gliding, flutter kicking and rhythmic breathing will also be the emphasis in Seals. • Dolphins: These swimmers will begin to combine rhythmic breathing, arm motion and kicking. Treading water, survival floating and independent entry to the water will also be practiced in Dolphins.

Level 3 - Stroke Development • Ages 4-15 This level is designed to develop and improve coordination and stamina in the front crawl and back crawl. The body motion and kick associated with butterfly will also be introduced in this level. Students should have passed Dolphins (Level 2) to enroll. Level 4 - Stroke Improvement • Ages 4-15 An advanced course designed to improve front crawl, back crawl and butterfly. Elementary backstroke, breaststroke and open turns will be introduced and practiced. Students should have passed Level 3 to enroll. Level 5 - Stroke Refinement • Ages 4-15 Endurance and stroke refinement is the emphasis in Level 5. Sidestroke, flips turns and shallow diving will be introduced to familiarize students with survival swimming and competitive swimming. Students should have passed Level 4 to enroll. Level 6 - Fitness Swimmer • Ages 4-15 To refine strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances. Training techniques, principles and equipment will be introduced to students in order to gain a better understanding of swimming for fitness. Students should have passed Level 5 to enroll.

Adult: Water Exercise (16 & older)

Splash into an exciting workout and enjoy the benefits of water exercise! This class is a great way to increase cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, endurance and flexibility. Relieve stress and have fun while making new friends. Open to all fitness levels. No swimming skills are necessary. Water walkers/joggers welcome. Teens 13-15 may register with a parent or guardian. Lifeguard Review (15 & older)

This class is the American Red Cross course designed to recertify participants who are currently certified in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid, and approaching the expiration date for their certification. This 16-hour course will require participants to pass a physical skills examination in lifeguarding rescue skills and first aid, as well as pass the written lifeguarding and first aid portions of the ARC Lifeguard Training exam with an 80 percent or higher. Today’s animators use sophisticated computer programs to create cartoon worlds. But first they have to teach themselves and their computers how to give form to the worlds they envision. Learn digital animation skills that will help with computer drawing, character movement, frame layering, and dialogue matching. Follow Me Robot How would you like to build a robot that has four built-in microphones? It will detect the sound source and in turn it will move and turn accordingly. It is your own robot to build and take home. It starts flashing and plays Do-Re-Me. Make it move the way you want it to move. It is so smart. CSI - Crime Scene Investigation (AM) You will be the super science sleuths. Have fun learning about forensics, crime scene investigations, and crime lab chemistry as you perform as many as 15 different experiments designed to show you just how those tricky cases are solved. Search for the evidence, gather clues, and discover how science can help solve a mystery. Participants will: Dust for fingerprints, analyze handwriting, test for blood type using simulated blood, examine hair and clothing fibers, practice chemistry to identify mystery substances and much more. Participants will then use their skills to solve crimes of the century.

Magnetic Levitation for Future Transportation Build your own “futuristic Maglev” car to race and take home. In 1999 a Japanese five-car maglev train set a record of 345 miles/hour. Yours won’t go that fast, but we will have fun building it and learning how it operates. Learn about the relationship between magnetism and electricity. You will also get to build a simple maglev track as well as a cool electromagnet. Learn how motors work, as well as generators. Build and take home the world’s simplest motor. Make your own compass and take part in many other magnificent magnetic activities!

Taekwondo is a traditional martial art and a modern Olympic sport, characterized by its fast spinning kicks and strong punching techniques. Students will be introduced to the basic fundamentals of Taekwondo techniques and participate in fun, educational drills designed to build self-confidence, develop coordination, physical endurance, strength, and discipline. Camps

Martial Arts Sport Fencing is a safe form of fencing (foam padded equipment) that is based on traditional techniques similar to Japanese and European Olympic Fencing. Students gain basic proficiency in this lightning quick sport and are introduced to the etiquette, codes of conduct and terminology. Foundations of footwork, stances, timing, offensive and defensive parrying will be covered. Students will participate in games and bouts with classmates. Rigorous training develops mental discipline, coordination and endurance. Tiger uniform ($50), equipment, and testing are an additional fee. Tiger uniform and safety equipment required after first class and can be purchased from the instructor.

Half Day camps: Participants will learn the basic and advanced techniques of soccer and compete in an age-appropriate “World Cup” tournament. Players 8 and younger work on dribbling, passing, receiving and shooting. Players 9 years and above learn advanced dribbling moves, tactical team aspects (i.e. possession, combination play) and attacking the goal as a unit. Half day campers should bring a full water bottle and a snack. All Day Camps: Participants play soccer in the morning, and enjoy a variety of soccer-related afternoon activities that may include soccer earth ball (48” high), soccer videos and tabletop soccer. Children will learn about other children around the world through the game of soccer. A full soccer match ends each day. At the Beginning

Super Safari Preschool Super Safari is a play-based recreation program designed to provide children their first experience in a structured environment. The program runs September through early June and follows the Sunnyvale School District holiday schedule. Our goal is to encourage your child’s imagination and creativity through a play-based learning environment. Our experienced stall will lead a variety of hands on activities such as art, language, storytelling, math readiness, circle time and music movement. Lion Cubs (3years)

Your child’s social development is encouraged through group activities such as circle time, art projects, stories, music and indoor/outdoor play. Meets 9:30 a.m. to Noon on TuTh at Serra Park.

Giraffes (3-4years)

Your child is enriched with activities such as pre-writing skills, counting and language arts all through creative play, craft projects and story telling. Meets 9:30 a.m.-Noon on MWF at Las Palmas Park.

Cheetahs (3-4years)

Your child’s social development is encouraged through group activities such as circle time, art projects, music and indoor/ outdoor play. Pre-writing skills, counting and number recognition, language arts and science are also covered. Meets 9 a.m.-Noon on TuTh at Las Palmas Park.

Tigers (4-5years)

Your child will have fun and learn through activities including music, dramatic play, language arts, letter and number recognition, number groups, writing, art and science. Meets 9 a.m.-Noon on MWF at both Serra and Ortega Parks.

Kindergarten Prep (5-6 years)

Your child prepares for a successful kindergarten experience with class activities including beginning reading and writing skills, math and science concepts, and activities that build large and small muscle skills and social and emotional development. Meets 9 a.m.-Noon, Monday-Friday at Murphy Park.

Gymnastics We ask family & friends to remain outside the gym during class time to avoid distractions for our students, except for the following: 1) At least one parent is required to remain present near and possibly observe in any class where only one staff member is coaching, 2) the parents of new students may stay during the first class of each session, 3) when a coach allows or invites a parent to stay. All are invited to observe the last class of each session. Non-participating siblings must be held at all times during observation. Thank you for your cooperation. A structured basic movement class for the young child, built around imaginative themes and gymnastics activities. A parent is required to participate in assisting the enrolled child, under the direction of the teacher. Only one participating child per parent. Important information about our dance classes. Girls’ Attire • Leotard and tights are required for any class that includes ballet or tap. • T-shirt and shorts, jazz pants and leggings are acceptable for all other classes. Boys’ Attire • T-shirt and shorts or sweatpants are acceptable for all classes. Shoes • For safety reasons, all students are required to wear shoes appropriate for each class. Students will not be allowed to participate without proper shoes. • Ballet shoes with leather soles are required for any class that includes ballet. Ballet-style bedroom slippers are not acceptable. • Tap shoes are required for any class that includes tap. However, tap shoes are not necessary until the second class meeting. • Jazz shoes or tennis shoes are acceptable for hip hop and cheer dance classes. • For Dancing Together, Tiny Tots Ballet and Hip Hop Boogie, students may also dance barefoot or in Robeez-type shoes with soft leather soles. • For a list of South Bay stores which carry dance shoes, call the Coordinator at (408) 730-7758. Parent Observations Parents are welcome to observe the final class meeting of each term. Unless specifically allowed in the class description, parents are not permitted in the studio during class. Sports & Fitness Ice Skating Parent/Child (3-4years)

Learn to ice skate together. Classes are geared to the child’s level, so parents will learn quickly in this six-week course. Children must be between 3-4years old.
