Design is a world of languages, in which the designer becomes a visual linguist translating form, line, type, and image.

004 | 005

A dialect is a variation of a language that is known for its fluctuations in structure, tone, gesture, color and any combination in the middle. It could be said that a dialect is just an amalgamation of both a thought and its environment taking the shape of literature, poetry, speech and art. Take for instance the ancient Aztec civilization; their dialect, nahuatl, was used along with imagery and texture to convey meaning, whether their message was on a tablet describing conduct, or in a story of folklore. This is how I perceive design to be. It is a world of dialects in which I become an avid linguist, trying to find a variety of visual language that will solve a problem I may be presented with in the future. /DIALECT/ (dahy.uh.lekt) a variety of a language that is distinguished from others within the same language. Origin: 1545-55; from the latin dialectus; Greek dialektos meaning discourse, or to converse.

(word) Mohuelmati

A point of view and in a way, a tradition. A way of life rooted in the waves of nature.

(def ): To feel good.

008| 009

Mohuelmati means to feel good in Nahuatl, the dialect of the ancient Aztec civilizations. To feel good as a response to something, a visual, a place, an action, a color or texture; its an emotion invoked by something that permeates the human senses. These little details are what makes life meaningful. Longboard Vineyards rules itself by a sense of goodness and honesty. Their goal is to pay as much detail to their wines as theyre able, from earth to barrel, by including what they call a human aspect to their winemaking process; in so, they create things that they are passionate about with good intention and experienced practices.

/MOHUELMATI/ (mow.lh.matty) To feel good, to have a sense of wellness. Origin: unknown; from the Dialect Nahuatl; Aztec Language, early civilization of central America.

Longboard Vineyards believes every bottle they create must reflect who they are. Every batch is different in its flavor based on the grapes they cultivate at the time. With this in mind, the goal was to create a cohesive brand system that showed the austerity of winemaking and the culture of surfing by using the idea of old school longboard surfing, pairing the flavor of each bottle of wine to a board that would represent its flavor, while also using surfing lingo to inform of the experience that comes with each sip of the red or light liquid.

I respect tradition but I also keep an open mind. I believe in winemaking; I ensure only good fruit is picked out in the vineyard but I also believe that a bit of “funk” in the wine goes a long way! I like to call this “Responsible Winegrowing” and I hope you can taste this philosophy in every bottle that comes from my vineyard. Mahalo!

Mocuepa: to transform oneself. The idea that after growth and settling into oneself, one can still make drastic changes at will in benefit of better behavior and emotions, or just better relations with one's mind and surroundings. This transformation can be intelectual, physical, emotional, and by means of influential forces. Upgrade is Human, a conference that aims to embrace transformation, with the goal of enlightening the science community about new advancements on genetic modification and its benefits for society and the always changing human condition.

The goal was to create a book that would talk about and promote a conference on the future of humanity in a positive light and explain further the topic. This conference, Upgrade is Human, presents the notion that in the future people will be capable of genetically transforming their bodies. My focus was to bring light to a topic that is considered taboo, and start a dialogue that discusses the two sides of genetics: its benefits on health and its ethics; should humanity design itself? By using loud color gradients, overlays, and lines, the final layout denotes the process of filling out a form, showing three steps in three books.

The genomics revolution. What we are doing is we are seizing control of our evolutionary future. We are essentially using technology to just jam evolution into fast-forward. It's not at all clear where it's going to take us. But in five to ten years we're going to start see profound and even drastic changes.

And how are we going to understand all this complex information? That is going to be the IT challenge of the next generation, is communicating all this information.

Another thing is that we're going to have to deal with this knowledge. It's really wonderful when we hear, "Oh, 99.9 percent of the letters in the code are the same. We're all identical to each other. Isn't it wonderful?" look around you and then realize that what we really care about is that little bit of difference. We look the same to a visitor from another planet maybe, but not to each other because we try to compete with each other all time. And we're going to have to come to grips with the fact that there are differences between us as individuals that we will know about, and between subpopulations of humans as well.

The second is modifying our emotions. I mean Ritalin, Viagra, things of that sort, Prozac. You know? This is just clumsy little baby steps. What if you could take a little concoction of pharmaceuticals that would make you feel really contented, just happy to be you. Are you going to be able to resist that if it does not have any overt side effects? And if you don't, who are you going to be? Why do you do what you do?

We're sort of circumventing evolutionary programs that guide our behavior. It's going to be very challenging to deal with. The third area is reproduction. The idea that we're going to chose our children's genes, as we begin to understand what genes say about who we are. That's the focus of "Redesigning Humans," and the challenges it's going to present to society.

You take a six to eight cell embryo, you tease out one of the cells, you run a genetic test on that cell, and depending on the results of that test you either implant that embryo or you discard it. It's already done to avoid rare diseases today. And pretty soon it's going to be possible to avoid virtually all genetic diseases in that way.

(word) Yauh

To be bold, active, and to go on a wild indoor adventure.

(def): To go.

046 | 047

Yauh means to go in the Aztec dialect. This could be interpreted in a variety of ways. To go do something, to leave, to be productive, to experience new things, or see places. In a way, it means to take action and be in motion. To go is one of the basic ideals of the brand of cars Jeep, bringing the act of adventure in their unique brand system and voice. Jeep is known for their high capacity automobiles and their enphasis in high quality materials, which have kept the brand fresh on the market. Their idea of adventure and their appreciation for life experiences serve as a conduit for human connection between the brand and all its established and new consumers. /YAUH/ (yah.uh) To go; to leave physically. The Jeep brand developed a voice that always encourages a life of adventure anywhere, and everywhere. Based on their motto, the goal was to create a packaging system that would transfer their voice to a new market niche, creating a line of home goods of strong quality, using muted colors in contrast to steely crisp photography; a voice that would speak to the roots of Jeep as a vehicle of hope in times of international struggle and American bravery.

(word) Nelhuayotl

Rooted. A Homely craft that is nurtured with passion and a quiet but loud resilience.

(def): Root, foundation.

062 | 063

Nelhuayotl means root, or foundation in which things are built upon. It is core of everything tactile, and ethereal such as personality and emotion. This word takes even more meaning when it is applied in the creation of things that we are passionate about and that take on the shape of what we hold most dear. Mother is a company that produces organic woodfloors by ethical means; they are located in Oregon, and were founded by two brothers from Portland with the mission of bringing a little bit of warmth and tradition into any given space with their farm grown wood flooring.

Given specific design parameters: a name, a service and two design qualities, the goal was to create a kind of serrvice that sucessfully complied with those constrictions and create a new company. My goal was to create that said company, meriting quality over quantity, with concious practices and experienced work. With that in mind I created Mother, a family owned company that produces good high quality wood flooring grown and produced in the state of Oregon, USA.

Tlami means to finish, to bring something to completion. It means to complete a course of action, or to follow a direction until the end is reached. To finish somehting always comes with a sense of purpose and geat accomplishment knowing that an end was reached in perfect detail and with success. The Timer app helps its users reach their goals and deal with procrastination habits by setting digital timers to finish scheduled tasks. It slowly builds healthy working habits by setting up goals and recording the users activities in order to detect procrastination patterns. In that way the app is able to give a personalized work flow.

(word) Moyetztica

Adapting, to find balance between tradition and new ideologies or novelties.

(def ): To be.

100 | 101

Moyetztica means to be. It is both a verb and a state of being. This is to be oneself at the core, as if influenced by the environments we live on or the people we surround ourselves with, the music we listen to or the words we read on books or articles. Why certain people refuse to accept change, novelty and new ideas? It does happen even though we live in our most progressive era yet. Is it fear of the unknown or the commodity found in old customs? To be oneself at the most basic of the individual make up, the project is about promoting a talk that touches upon the idea of modern evolution.

/MOYETZICA/ (moy.het.zee.ca) To be (someone, something). Origin: unknown; from the Dialect Nahuatl; Aztec Language, early civilization of central America.

The goal was to create a promotional booklet about a conference on a topic of social interest. Modern Adaption talks about change and social acceptance. In a very divisive time, the idea of change and social differences can be off-putting to some; I created a promotional booklet about Modern Adaptation for a talk that examines behavioral evolution and how it affects human connections, using bold color, loud typography, and geometric shapes to represent the paradox of the rational and emtional mind.

(word) Amantecatl

Untitled, a store for an inspired living, curating everyday life.

(def): An artisan.

114 | 115

Amantecatl means Artisan in a dialect. It is what the artists and crafters were called in the early days. These people were the creators, designers, writers, muralists, story tellers, crafters, and textile makers of their society. To be an artisan during this period in time was a great honor. To be able to design our environments is the epitome of creativity. With this idea in mind, my classmates and I created a pop up store called Untitled, a home goods store that intends to bring the museum experience to each home by curating its limited edition items and providing a space of inspiration for anyone who is a creative or that loves art, history, and good design.

/AMANTECATL/ (ah.man.tacatl) an artisan, a handcrafter; an artist. Origin: unknown; from the Dialect Nahuatl; Aztec Language, early civilization of central America.

CO N CE P T

This was a collaborative project, in which the goal was to create a branding and packing system for a retail store with a consistent brand voice, and a sustainable brand matrix. As a team we came up with Untitled, a pop up store based in New york, selling designed home goods for a curated lifestyle. Based on the philosophy of the Moma, we structure the store to be like a museum, where each product line would have an individual but cohesive brand voice, as if it where part of a limited exihibition; with that in mind, each line had the freedom to have different graphic styles, based on the products it sold and their functionality.

MANY THANKS

(At the Academy): Instructors at the Academy of Art University

Many thanks to Mary Scott and Tom McNulty, for taking the time and energy to push me beyond my limits. To Ariel Grey, for teaching me about professionalism and the flexibility of type, and to Darrel Hayden for teaching me to speak LOUDLY without yelling at the top of my lungs.

(My family): Mom and Dad Rosy Esthela

Everything starts at the base, with a brick or a sort of foundation. You are it. Mom and Dad, all your support, your quiet resilience and hard work ethic have made of me what I am today. Words cannot express my fervent gratitude. Thanks Rosy, for being the coolest sister and a good example of badassery. Thanks aunt, for always being there.

(My friends): Gina Adolfo Marisol

Thank you for believing that I am the best designer in the world! Even though you dont know who Massimo Vignelli was or havent seen my peers work; your unconditional friendship and words of support kept me moving forward.

(SF sustenance): Things and people that kept me alive during this period

Mexican coffee, diet coke, water, popchips; the midnight texts of moral and creative support from my good friends Jelita and Steph while working on our portfolio, thank you.
