NEKUNÍ CENTRE AN ACT OF HUMANITARIAN ARCHITECTURE IN MOROCCO’S HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS The belief that architecture can be a catalyst to achieve positive change in a community has been the driving force of our Master’s thesis. The Nekuní Centre fits into a wider context of humanitarian aid provided to the inhabitants of Morocco’s Tessaout Valley by the non-governmental organization Acción Geoda. Our experience on the field and the collaboration with the NGO gave us a chance to better understand the valley’s rural reality. First and foremost, we focused on the living conditions of local communities and we witnessed their state of isolation and abandonment, which helped us define the guidelines of a project truly centered on people’s needs. The nearby villages’ vernacular architecture inspired a earth design that merges perfectly into the landscape and promotes a short supply of materials and expertise. Energy-efficient. Compact. Optimised. This project follows the guidelines of the Solar Decathlon, an international competition that challenges university teams to design and build prototypes of sun-powered sustainable housing. Our research focused on developing smart solutions for each of the ten contest categories that range from energy efficiency to innovation and social awareness. Suited to the Mediterranean latitudes, the design aims to avoid unnecessary use of energy thanks to passive techniques such as cross and stack ventilation, well insulated thermal mass and a west-facing loggia that provides shade when most needed. The use of prefabricated elements ensures an easy, safe and quick assembly (and disassembly) process.

Moveable and folding furnishings turn this 43-square-metre apartment into a flexible home with a raft of hidden features. The built-in wardrobes along the northern and southern walls allow us to conceal an abundance of storage. 16

WEWORK OSTIENSE A CO-WORKING OFFICE BUILDING IN ROME’S FORMER INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT
Respectful of its location in the heart of Ostiense, the project follows the layout of the surrounding buildings, as it runs along three sides of the plot making a C shape. The co-working space was designed to provide a variety of settings, from enclosed private rooms to fluid shared offices. The inclination of the GRC cladding panels guarantees the best possible solar-shading effect, while giving the facade rhythm and plasticity.

CHURCH OF S.MARIA DI LORETO This 16th-century youthful work by Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane is the smaller of the two landmark domed churches that overlook the Trajan’s Forum. OSTIENSE’S VISUAL TIMELINE In the late 19th century, Rome’s southern district was designated to be the industrial centre of the new capital. The plans whose contruction marked the area’s rapid transformation (slaughter house, gas holders, thermoelectric power station, general warehouses etc.) are today at the centre of the debate on adaptive reuse. “Progettazione Architettonica 1M” 2016/17 Prof. Paolo Desideri 22
HAMMAM FOR THE TESSAOUT VALLEY In 2017, the NGO Acción Geoda started a collaboration with Madrid’s School of Architecture to find design solutions for the first hammam of the Tessaout Valley, in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. My design aimed at optimizing the use of firewood by placing the hammam on top of four communal ovens. Its reduced size and dome-like form help creating good heat retention. The central core is built with traditional earth bricks while the surrounding filter space is wrapped in a textile skin made of ropes, whose density create different levels of privacy.
