Tourism Potential of Uzbekistan by Mirjalol Fayziyev, MA GENERAL INFORMATION ON TOURISM IN UZBEKISTAN Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan has been developing in the path of market economy. Diversification of economy, which was heavily dependent on agriculture and resources till 1991 was one of the main economic tasks in the first years of independence. This edition is devoted to Tourism Potential in Uzbekistan.

Cultural Tourism
Meeting the common people, experiencing the lifestyles of people in different regions of Uzbekistan surely creates unique tourism experience in minds of tourists. Uzbeks have preserved their folklore, customs, traditions, cuisine and applied art much better compared to other nations.
Cultural tourism is one of the main directions of tourism in Uzbekistan. Beautiful mosques and madrasahs, old city centers and bazaars, unique Uzbek cuisine and customs attract tourists from all over the world. The people of modern Uzbekistan had long and strong relationship with the nations which shaped and influenced the world civilization such as Persians, Greeks, Chinese, Arabs and Indians. The synthesis of the cultures in the territory of modern Uzbekistan happened many centuries ago as the region served as a connecting route the East with the West. Caravans of Silk Road were passing through the old cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva etc. making the country trade center for international merchants. However, the region was not only known for its bazaars, caravanserais, it was also the center of science and religion. Cities of Samarkand and Bukhara were perfect places to learn Algebra, Geometry, Physics, Astronomy, Geography, Medicine, Philosophy and Islam. There a lot of facts showing the importance of this region in history of science, which proves the significance of Uzbekistan as a unique tourist destination. Ancient Cities Uzbekistan is home to dozens of ancient cities some of which are more than 2700 years old. They represent the great history, civilization, art, science, architecture of the region which date back to thousand years. Each of them have unique architecture, history and stories to tell the tourist visiting them.
Bukhara Along with Samarkand Bukhara is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia. It has around 140 different monuments, including:
Samarkand The city of Samarkand was the capital of legendary Amir Temur and his great Temorid’s Empire. Samarkand was known with different names; Maracanda, Semizkent and Samarkanda are dome of them. Modern Samarkand is the centre of the Samarkand region of Uzbekistan and it was listed in UNESCO world heritage site as Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures.

Modern center of Bukhara province of Uzbekistan has been long center of trade, religion, science and culture. The city was the center of Islamic civilization during the Samanid period.
Khiva Khiva is also one of the oldest cities of Central Asia. The old city of Itchan Kale is the best preserved and biggest old city part of Uzbek cities. It was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uzbekistan in 1991, as the first site to be included in list of UNESCO. The city of Khiva consists of two parts; Dishan Kale – outer city which is the new part of the city; and Itchan Kale – Inner city, old city center in other words. The city wall oft he inner city preserved very well with its protection ramps and bastions. The city had several gates including Ata Darwase, Palvan Darwase, Dasht Darwase and Bakhtcha Darwase. Some of the important Monuments in Khiva are Kohne Ark, Kalta Menar, Madrasah Amin Khan, Madrasah Muhammad Rakhim Khan and Mausoleum of Sheik Said Alaeddin. One of the greatest scientists of Islamic Civilization, the founder of Algebra, Algorithm and author of many scientific books Muhammad Musa al-Khwarezmi was born in this region.
Kokand First information about Kokand in literature appears in the books from 10th Century. It was once the capital of Khanate which had the same name. Kokand was formed as a Khanate in the beginning of 18th century. The first Khan of the Kokand Khanate was Shakhrukh from Shaibanids denasty. Unfortunately the Khanate did not exist for a long time, in the middle of the 19th century it
was conquered by the Emir of Bukhara, Nasrullah. After the last Khan Nasreddin being overthrown, the khanate becomes the part of Russian Empire and short history of Khanate ends there. The Palace of Kokand, Madrasah Kamal Kazi, Juma Mosque, Madrasah Narbutabek, Dakhma-e Shahan and other are main visiting sites for tourists.
Shahrisabz The city of Shahrisabz lays on the valley of Qashqadarya river. It means the “green city” in Persian. It was founded in 3rd century B.C. However, city was known as Kesh, the founder of Timurids Empire and great Emperor Amir Temur. Ak-Saray Palace, Malik Adchar Mosque, Khoja Mirkhamid Mosque, Bazaar, Kök Gumbaz Mosque and many other monuments are sights of this city.

nowadays tourists can visit the studios of masters in the city centers of Bukhara and Samarkand. They are in the Registan square (Samarkand) and in the handcrafters’ yard in Bukhara near Labi-Hauz ensemble.
HANDICRAFTS & APPLIED ARTS
Tourists can learn more about the history of ne or another metal carving school, observe the process of metal carving and buy souvenirs by visiting above mentioned places.
Pottery There are several schools of traditional Uzbek Pottery, which preserved ancient methods of creating different items. Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent – each region has its own style and colors. But one of the oldest and world-wide known schools is Rishtan school and its blue ceramics.

Miniature Painting is a form of visual art which was popular in the Middle East and Central Asia from IX century to XIX century. The cities like Baghdad, Tabriz, Samarkand, Bukhara, Shiraz and Herat were the centers of Lacquer Miniature Art.
Using gold and silver thread as a needlework in cities like Herat and Samarkand was popular, however the capital of Gold Embroidery work has been always Bukhara. The masters of Gold Embroidery were working to decorate the garments and his courtiers.
One of the biggest masters of this visual art was Kamoliddin Behzod, who created a Miniature School in the territory of modern Uzbekistan.
Wood engraving Wood-carved columns, pillars, doors and gates of mosques and madrasahs were unique ornaments which embellished the buildings. There are still several centers of wood carving in Uzbekistan in Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent and Fergana. Tourists still can visit them at the handicraft yards of old cities and buy nice piece of arts from the local masters.
SOME FACTS (FROM WTTC REPORT ) GDP: DIRECT CONTRIBUTION The direct contribution of Travel & Tourism to GDP was UZS1,317.1bn (0.9% of total GDP) in 2014, and is forecast to rise by 3.9% in 2015, and to rise by 6.1% pa, from 2015-2025, to UZS2,468.0bn (0.9% of total GDP) in 2025.
Unfortunately, during continuous wars starting from XVI century to XX century on soils of Central Asia, a lot of masterpieces have been lost. The examples we have today are mainly the works which were produced as decoration for the books of the Poets of middle ages like Navoi, Jami, Nizami and Khayyam. The visual art was reborn in Uzbekistan in 70’s. of XX century. Today Lacquer Miniature Painting living renaissance again in cities like Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara.

GDP: TOTAL CONTRIBUTION The total contribution of Travel & Tourism to GDP was UZS4,208.8bn (3.0% of GDP) in 2014, and is forecast to rise by 4.7% in 2015, and to rise by 6.0% pa to UZS7,889.9bn (2.9% of GDP) in 2025.
Travel & Tourism investment in 2014 was UZS711.0bn, or 2.2% of total investment. It should rise by 7.3% in 2015, and rise by 5.6% pa over the next ten years to UZS1,321.0bn in 2025.
Since ancient times the nations of modern Uzbekistan were making fabrics. Archeologists found the pieces of silk fabric in the territory of Uzbekistan which date back to II-III centuries BC. Traditional fabrics and ikat textile production methods were preserved in Bukhara, Margilan and Namangan cities. Traditional silk fabrics which have been produced in Uzbekistan and still in wide usage are: alocha, satin and shoyi.
