Q&A
Gladstone Gentleman’s Grooming heralds a new era for the traditional barbershop.
GLADSTONE Classic barbers, redefined for the twenty first century man. There was a time when chivalry wasn’t dead. When you were a gentleman before anything else. And when getting a decent hair cut wasn’t an extravagant treat.

Why? Because it’s made going to the barber’s a truly great experience once again. It’s redefined what a barbershop is, and what it means to get your hair cut from one of the best barbers in the country. At Gladstone’s, you’re not just thrown in and out of the chair, told to wait around in a noisy environment with phones ringing off the hook or a dingy
waiting room with centuries old decor. You’re treated like the gentleman you are. That means an incredible location in a vintage mill. It means a barbershop with such incredible interior design - including classic comics and old newspaper cutting wallpaper, liquor bottle water sprays, and

everyday guy and helped them release that suave, polite and detail driven look. That’s why anyone is welcome into Gladstone’s, with a cup of tea, a glass of water or an ice cold beer. Whatever takes your fancy. You might have to wait, because the chair is busy and no appointments are made, so that everyone is equal. But it isn’t like waiting really, because you can listen to some incredible music oozing out of the stereo, engross yourself in the fine details of the shop or sit back, relax and play on the games console. Sounds luxurious doesn’t it?

shattered beer bottle glass counter tops - that you find something new every time you visit. It also means being given the care and attention you deserve, so that you actually look forward to visiting. Owner and founder Yezzan Khalil wanted to create a place where you could escape from the world, a place to relax and enjoy some of those finer things in life... such as an exquisite hair cut. Yezzan had been working in a barber’s since before his fingers were big enough to hold a pair of scissors, and he knew exactly what the modern gent needed out of a haircut, a shave and a good old chat. So Yezzan set about following his dream of creating a barbershop that suited the modern man. A place you visited not because it was a chore, but because you wanted the experience, the company and the great new look that you had when you left. He wanted a place that truly suited the style and sophistication of a modern gentleman, something that appealed to the
Since it opened, Gladstone’s has been inundated with guys wanting to come and share in the 21st Century Gentleman experience, and it’s door has practically never stopped turning. From strength to strength, Yezzan and his modern barbershop have been a massive hit, particularly the pop up stand which ran over the bank holiday weekend in the centre of Manchester. People were amazed you could get such exquisite treatment, in the middle of a store, just like that. And that’s why the idea of truly refined, chivalrous, twenty first century gentleman is spreading. Gladstone’s is bringing the traditional up to date. And it’s definitely here to stay. When did you open & how did your first day go? We opened on the 3rd of October last year, which also happened to be the birthday of my 5th younger brother, so we’ll always have twice the reason to celebrate on the date. Our first day went great, we were busy and we had plenty of friends and family popping in for a nosey. Why have you chosen barbering as your chosen field? Barbering has been a big part of my life from a young age, but only over the last 2 years have I become sure that it’s the right field for me. How do you define a barber and what motivates you as a barber? A good barber is a counsellor and a friend to everyone who sits in his chair. I’d love to say happy customers motivate me, and although they do, what really motivates me is making moves within the industry and expanding Gladstone across the UK and further a field. In a nutshell, what does your job entail? In a nutshell, cut well and listen well, but there's a lot more to it than that!

Piranha Hair Studio The Brainchild of Barber B.
P
iranha training academy is the brainchild of Barber B. The academy was established over 12 years ago in order to develop and promote the art of barbering specifically high definition hair tattoos.
The idea of the academy originated from Barber B’s hunger to inspire new talent and motivation in others and the desire to offer the opportunities that he had never been given. Barber B is a firm believer of sharing skills and ideas and celebrating the talents of others. He regularly attends hair shows and exhibitions and has a passion for showcasing his work, something he describes as ‘Free education’. In 2006 he began taking on apprentices in his Leeds city centre salon. 2012 was an important year for Barber B.
After using Fudge products and colours to create his stunning HD hair tattoos, Creative Director of Fudge, John Vial kindly invited him to take part in the annual fudge conference. Barber B’s involvement in such a high profile event combined with the fantastic relationship and support from the people at Fudge has catapulted the Piranha

Barbering academy into a different arena. More recently Barber B and his team attended the ‘Barber Connect conference’ In Cardiff. It didn’t take long before the eye catching designs were stirring up excitement amongst the other professionals and raising questions about how others could achieve this finely tuned technique. Since then it has all been a bit of a
whirlwind for Barber B. He has been working with Barbicide to highlight the importance of keeping equipment clean, and after being blown away by the quality and effectiveness of his designs, was invited by ESG (Employment Skills Group) to the opening of the Adee Phelan academy in Birmingham. This opened the doors to many exciting opportunities for the Piranha academy. Barber B has
now teamed up with ESG to offer his training services to young people. And after meeting and making quite an impression with Errol Douglas at the academy, has plans to collaborate with both Adee and Errol. Seven years after Barber B took on his first apprentice in his city centre salon, he is ready to recruit the next generation of
Barbering apprentices, travelling round the country delivering commercial courses and seminars, as well as teaching in house Apprenticeship schemes and Single Unit Delivery. So what does the future hold for the Piranha barbering academy? After keeping in touch with Errol Douglas Barber B is looking forward to
collaborating with him later this year. He is excited at the prospect of starting his work with ESG and Adee Phelan and hopes to continue great relationships with Barbicide and Fudge. One thing is for sure, if commitment, passion and dedication are what it takes, then this man is going to go far!
