CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2008 MISA ZAMBIA MEDIA AWARDS The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia is inviting nominations for its annual Media Awards which are given in honour of excellence in journalism . Excellence in journalism may be described as the upholding of ethics of the profession at all costs and the relentless pursuit of truth behind the bare facts in reporting issues that affect the Zambian populace on a daily basis. The MISA Zambia Media Freedom award is in recognition of the work of individuals or institutions where they are considered to have made a significant contribution to the promotion of media freedom in Zambia. The excellence which the award acknowledge can be achieved either through reportage, or in other ways such as media law reform, lobbying or media training. The MISA Zambia media reporting awards recognise reportage that addresses development, democratic and good governance values. They are open to all public and private media institutions and reporters based in Zambia. The MISA Zambia Media reporting and media freedom awards have been sponsored by Zain Zambia. The Best Anti Corruption Reporting award sponsored by the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) seeks to recognise reportage by the media or reporters that addresses prevention, exposure and education on what constitutes corruption. Meanwhile the Germany Embassy sponsored Best Water and Sanitation award is in recognition of reportage that addresses access to safe drinking water, investment in sanitation, provision of hygienic facilities and the environmental impact on access to safe drinking water in Zambia. The Best HIV/AIDS media reporting awards sponsored by Zambian Breweries will recognise published or broadcast materials that discourage stigmatisation, encourage positive living, HIV/AIDS prevention and encourages Zambians to know their HIV/AIDS status. Below is an outline of all the media awards: MISA Zambia Best overall media freedom award K3 million MISA Zambia Best print media reporting award K2 million MISA Zambia Best Radio media reporting award K2 million MISA Zambia Best television media reporting award K2 million MISA Zambia Best photographism award K2 million MISA Zambia Best telecommunications award K2 million Best Anti- Corruption Reporting award K2 million Best reporting – Water and sanitation K1.5 million Best HIV/AIDS print media reporting award K2 million Best HIV/AIDS radio reporting award K2 million Best HIV/AIDS television reporting award K2 million The entries to these awards will be judged by an independent body of judges drawn from well-seasoned media personnel in Zambia who have held high positions in their journalism career. Eligibility: The Media Awards are open to both private and public media of all forms e.g. photography, print, video, audio or media associations and institutions. Eligible individuals or institutions should be Zambian. Nominations should be accompanied by a motivation letter of not more than 300 words stating why the nominee should be awarded the MISA Zambia Media Award. Where applicable, a copy of the work, or a portfolio of work should be included with the nomination. Entries must have been published between January 1 and November 27, 2008.
