MIS moves to new premises

Then and Now A short look at the two buildings of MIS – then and now – illustrates the company’s incredibly dynamic development since its foundation in 1995. On the occasion of a trip to Israel in November, EDI Journal learned a lot about the history of MIS and its tight integration with academic research. As so much in medical technology, the origins of MIS were military in nature. But already in the early 1980s, the original company became a specialist producer of orthopaedic prostheses. An affiliate tasked with developing and producing dental implants was founded in 1987. In 1995, this affiliate became the independent enterprise MIS Implants Technologies Ltd, which that very same year began marketing implants with sandblasted surfaces. Two years later, close research and development links were forged with the universities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and the Rambam Medical Center. The result of this cooperation was the Trio concept: three different implants sharing the same line of prosthetic components using internal and external hex connectors. In 2003, additional cooperative scientific and research agreements were signed with leading universities in Europe and the US. That same year witnessed the introduction of a completely novel surface treatment to provide micro-rough and macrorough surfaces with decisive benefits in terms of bone apposition and osseointegration. When the Seven implant was introduced in 2004, causing a sensation in the world of dentistry, this innovation had been preceded by many years of in-in vitro and in-vivo testing along with an international multicentre study covering 1500 implants placed and followed for a protracted period. This if nothing else finally secured MIS Implants its place among leading inter-

national medical companies engaging in research and development. In 2005, the Dental Implant Training Center (DITC) opened its gates in the US, offering a broad range of training and continuing education courses, from beginner training all the way to specialized expert workshops. To accommodate ever more demanding treatment suppliers and evermore sophisticated procedures in the vestibular region, MIS in 2006 presented Mistral, a single-piece implant. That same year, the company joined forces with internationally renowned AB Surgery to open the Centre Européenne d’Implantologie Dentaire (CEID). One year later, a number of training centres were also founded in Latin America under the name of Esparza. Having presented its own line of biomaterials for bone and soft-tissue augmentation in 2005, MIS proceeded to supplement the line by a novel collagen membrane, 4BONE-RCM, in 2008. MIS considers biomaterials a broad and challenging field in terms of research and development in the near and more distant future. At this point, MIS is represented in more than 60 countries all over the world. The move to new premises with an area of more than 30,000 square meters, of which 10,000 are dedicated to production facilities, was just one additional milestone in the history of one of the most successful companies in oral implantology.
