This work, developed by a large research team from CEPESE - Center for Population, Economy and Society Studies (University of Porto), presents, throughout three volumes, the biographies of more than 240 personalities who exercised the function of Provedor of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto. It is an unprecedented study that, due to its comprehensiveness and depth, makes an enormous contribution to the knowledge of these personalities - which include a king and a prime minister, deputies and mayors, bishops and archbishops, businessmen and important figures of the city of Porto -, who, for more than five hundred years, led the destinies of the Misericórdia do Porto. Pessoa ou Pessoas porque na atividade desenvolvida pela Santa Casa, ao longo dos séculos, as pessoas e a sua dignidade de-

Arte, porque o culto divino, que sempre fez parte da imagem e do serviço público das Misericórdias, foi concretizado em espaços arquitetonicamente desenhados e preparados para o efeito e se estruturou pela mediação de objetos e representações artísticas que ajudaram as pessoas à vivência da caridade e as aproximaram da beleza suprema que, para os crentes, é o próprio Deus. Benemerência porque foi por ela que as Santas Casas viveram e sobreviveram. É urgente recuperar, nas sociedades atuais, o sentido da dádiva e da Benemerência porque a Benemerência é o caminho mais eficaz para a solidariedade. This IV Congress is addressed to each and every one of the researchers, men and women, academic or not, Portuguese or foreign, who have devoted time and labor to investigate on the vast problematic that, from the end of the fifteenth century, constitutes the program and raison d’être of the Misericórdias, especially the one from Porto. The guiding line of this Congress: «Person(s), Art, Beneficence». Person or Persons because, in the activity developed by the Misericórdia do Porto, over the centuries, people and their dignity must are a priority. People who served, but also beneficiaries. And people who leave belongings for those who need them. Art, because the divine worship, which was always part of the image and public service of the Misericórdias, was concretized in spaces designed for this purpose and was structured by the
mediation of objects and artistic representations that helped people to live the charity and brought them closer to the supreme beauty which, for believers, is God himself. O modelo Panóptico, criado por Jeremy Bentham, uma estrutura arquitetónica que seria capaz de

reformar a moral e promover a ordem social, serviu de inspiração a dois novos edifícios no recinto Hospitalar. Esta exposição, centrada no conceito alargado de panóptico, procura fazer uma reflexão sobre as mudanças de paradigma das diferentes formas de contenção e vigilância ao longo dos tempos, tanto no contexto psiquiátrico como na sociedade atual. In the late nineteenth century, shortly after the opening of the Conde de Ferreira Hospital, the need to create cells for “angry” or “agitated” patients, imposed the construction of new pavilions. The Panoptic model, created by Jeremy Bentham, an architectural structure designed to ensure social order, served as an inspiration for two new buildings in the Hospital. This exhibition, centered on the broad concept of the panoptic, seeks to reflect on the paradigm changes of restraint and vigilance throughout the ages, both in the psychiatric context and in today’s society. MISERICÓRDIA DO PORTO UM OBJETO E SEUS DISCURSOS POR SEMANA – HOSPITAL DE CONDE FERREIRA AN OBJECT AND ITS DISCUSSIONS PER WEEK - CONDE DE FERREIRA HOSPITAL * Data | Date: 14.10.2017 Horário | Schedule: 18h00 Local | Location: Centro Hospitalar Conde de Ferreira No Conde Ferreira, os pacientes eram distribuídos em função da sua patologia (tipo e fase da doença) e da sua classe social. De todas as estruturas arquitetónicas do hospital merece destaque o Panóptico, também conhecido por Pavilhão dos Furiosos ou dos Alienados, o qual servia para isolar os doentes mais agitados ou perigosos. Era uma estrutura fechada em forma de eneágono (nove lados), uma “máquina de vigilância”, como lhe chamaria Michel Foucault, em que os vigiados, alojados em células individuais, estão sujeitos à visibilidade plena. Tema polémico que juntará à mesa um investigador nas áreas da biopolítica e da cultura visual da medicina e um psiquiatra do Conde Ferreira, autor do livro “Palco da Loucura”, sobre algumas das mentes mais criativas da humanidade (e de como a genialidade e a loucura se podem tocar). A sessão terá como convidados Adrián Gramary, psiquiatra, e António Fernando Cascais, investigador, e contará com a moderação de Jorge Dias, mesário da Misericórdia do Porto. (type and stage of the disease) and their social class. Of all the architectural structures of the hospital, the Panoptic, also known as the Furious or Alienated Pavilion, deserves special mention. Served to isolate the most agitated or dangerous patients, it was a closed structure in the form of a nonagon (nine sides), a “surveillance machine”, as Michel Foucault would call it, where the patients, housed in individual cells, were always observed. A controversial subject that will be joined by a researcher in the areas of biopolitics and visual culture of medicine and a psychiatrist of this Hospital. This session will be hosted by Adrián Gramary, a psychiatrist, by António Fernando Cascais, a researcher, and by Jorge Dias, a board member of Misericórdia do Porto. O acesso à exposição é integrado na visita ao MMIPO. On the day of the 300th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of the Mafra palace-convent basilica, built by D. João V (1689-1750), and integrated in the protocol celebrated between the Misericórdia do Porto and the national entity for the Cultural Heritage, the MMIPO receives a piece from the Mafra Palace, representative of its important collections. This piece, dating from 1521, comes from the library of the monument - Casa da Livraria de Mafra – rightly considered one of the most important historical and scenographic libraries in the world. Nesta perspetiva, serão objeto de questionamento e de reflexão os diversos meios da imagem, assim como os lugares e os dispositivos cenográficos da sua apresentação. The critical observation of a fundamental set of images from the Manueline period, exemplified by the Fons Vitae painting, on display at the MMIPO, implies addressing some fundamental introductory questions, such as the current patrimonial condition, the way we see them contemporaneously and the assumptions for its re-reading. It is interesting to try to appropriate their relationship with a particular political and religious context, ascertaining in what way and through which processes the expression of power and devotional function, its religious use, related and articulated with the artistic dimension. In this perspective, the various media of the image, as well as the places and the scenographic devices of its presentation, will be the object of questioning and reflection. Este ano, a instalação é da autoria da artista Cláudia Lopes em parceria com a Vista Alegre. Utilizando, como matéria para a criação, peças recolhidas na Fábrica de Porcelana da Vista Alegre, recria-se, no espaço da Galeria do Benfeitores, uma peça que nos remete para o imaginário Natalício. O acesso à exposição é integrado na visita ao MMIPO. At MMIPO, the Christmas Tree is reinvented once again. This year, is authored by the artist Cláudia Lopes in partnership with Vista Alegre. Using, as material for creation, pieces collected in the Porcelain Factory of Vista Alegre, in the space of the Gallery of the Benefactors, a part of the imaginary Christmas is recreated. Situada na freguesia de Ramalde, a Casa da Prelada e o jardim envolvente, onde se encontra um dos maiores labirintos da Península Ibérica, são parte integrante do maior conjunto paisagístico delineado pelo arquiteto italiano Nicolau Nasoni – a Quinta da Prelada, legada por D. Francisco de Noronha e Menezes. Atualmente, o edifício acolhe a Biblioteca e o Arquivo Histórico da Misericórdia do Porto, uma exposição permanente de mobiliário e outras obras do acervo da Misericórdia do Porto. Periodicamente recebe exposições temporárias, concertos, conferências, entre outras atividades. The MMIPO is located in the historical center of Porto, at Rua das Flores, in the building that was the administrative headquarters of the institution from the middle of the sixteenth century until 2013. The Museum presents itself with the dual purpose of present the history of the Santa casa da Misericórdia do Porto and its institutional purposes, as well as publicizing its art collections, by providing a set of resources that translate the memory and the identity of this organization, projecting it into the future.
