WHAT WE DO Nordic Startup Awards (NSAwards) was born out of a vision to connect the startup ecosystems in the Nordic countries. Back in 2012, the national startup ecosystems were growing and developing fast but very little connections between the community builders, investors, talent and founders among the Nordic countries existed. A strong platform in the Nordic region was needed to showcase the innovations and stakeholders from the ecosystem to the rest of the world; by connecting them under one region, a powerful communication platform was created. Mission & Vision Our aim is to use this yearly award show as a vessel to map, connect and promote the national and regional startup ecosystems of the Nordic as well as its stakeholders, and to add entrepreneurship on the agenda of policy makers together with our partners. Our vision is to be a regional and international well known platform, within and outside the startup ecosystem, that promotes the success stories from the Nordic tech startup ecosystem and supports the growing strength of Nordic tech innovation.

LETTER FROM THE CEO

“We firmly believe that the exchange of talent and technology in the Nordic startup scene is crucial. KIM BALLE, CEO

Dear Friends, We live in a time where entrepreneurship has an important role to play. You can say that we live in a startup era where new companies will impact society and legislation faster than ever before. The Nordic region with its tradition of high level innovation, creativity as well as a strong entrepreneurial spirit can and should play an important part in this new era. Collaboration has never been more important! We firmly believe that in the Nordic Startup scene, nationality is not important. But the exchange of talent and technology is crucial. We want the Nordic startup scene to be comparable to the scenes in London and Berlin, and we believe the best way to do this, is by closer co-operation between the Nordic countries. The awards stands to represent the entire startup ecosystem - from the startups themselves to the people behind them, and the organizations that work alongside to make the great things possible. Kim Balle CEO and Co-Founder

HOW IT WORKS Nordic Startup Awards connects the entire startup ecosystem - from successful and promising startups, investors and journalists to founders and developers. The award show is carried out in two rounds. First, national finals are held in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The national winners will compete and move on to the Grand Finale, which relocates every year.

12 / NORDIC STARTUP AWARDS

NORDIC STARTUP AWARDS / 13

COMPETITION FRAMEWORK 1.

Nomination opens online Anyone can nominate a person, company or organisation in all categories per country through the public online nomination system. For further evaluation of in the competition, data from each nominee is gathered based on the criteria of each category.

2. S electing National Finalists Each of the country partners invites a group of at least 5 ambassadors, which have an extensive knowledge and experience in the startup ecosystem. The panel selects 5 national finalists from the nominations for each category using the criteria and data. Their participation ensures that only the most promising companies are selected in the shortlist. The shortlist consists of a minimum of 5 national finalists per category in each Nordic country. The National Finalists are published online and public voting for the finalists opens which can be done through an online system. Individuals can only vote one time per finalist. 3. F inding National Winners Each of the country partners invites a national jury with extensive knowledge and experience relevant to specific categories. There are 5 jury

members per category. The ranking of each finalist is done through a star based system provided by NSAwards, where each finalist is rated from 1 to 5 stars. The public votes weigh as one jury member, and they are equivalent to stars. Each finalist receives from 1 to 5 stars depending on the amount of votes gathered through the online voting phase. The overall rating of each finalist is based on the sum of the stars from the national jury and the public voting. Finally, the national winners are announced at the national events and also published online. At the same time, public voting opens again for all the national winners, which are now competing to win on the regional level. 4. Finding Regional Winners The regional voting opens to the general public. NSAwards invites a regional jury with extensive knowledge and experience in the startup ecosystem, which can be from the Nordic region as well as outside the region. There are 7 jury members per category. The ranking of each finalist is performed as in the national round. Finally, the regional winners are announced at the grand finale and also published online after the award show.

Central European Startup Awards

GLOBAL STARTUP AWARDS The Global Startup Awards (GSAwards) runs annual regional startup competitions currently in 26 countries throughout 4 regions around the world. The organisation and its operations are very closely tied into the national startup ecosystems with a bottom-up approach, ensuring GSAwards work with communities and the supporting organisations as much as possible throughout the entire program. Since 2012, the program has awarded (the winners) over 450 entrepreneurs, startups and organisations in 15 countries throughout Europe. We've interacted with over 4.000+ nominations during the same period, with over 40.000+ votes cast from members of the public and the community. Learn more about it at www.globalstartupawards.com

Some short facts collectively from GSA: - 26 country partners - 100+ collaboration partners - 50+ Sponsors - 70+ ambassadors - 50+ Advisory Board members

The Central European Startup Awards is the Central and Eastern European region’s biggest no-pitch, no-conference startups festival that recognizes and celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit and startup ecosystems in 10 countries across the region. The Central and Eastern European region has a strong history of innovation power and great inventors. Just think about Ernő Rubik, Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, John von Neumann, Edward Teller, just to name a few. Historically and culturally we are bound together, but even though most of the CEE countries enjoy the free trade and movement within the EU, we have yet to truly capitalise on our untapped collaborative potential. To better represent the tremendous

greymatter and innovative power this part of Europe harbors in its genes, Central European Startup Awards, among many other great initiatives, has the vision just to do that - elevate the region’s resumé as a startup stronghold and connect the startups and their support ecosystem for a better connected and stronger Central Europe. The region is steadily growing, more and more countries invest in their entrepreneurs, as we see from success stories from Poland through Slovenia and to our joy, the Eastern and Balkan region is coming up strong as the New East.

“These days everyone in the startup ecosystems is focusing so much on the global hubs, just like London or San Francisco, that we lose many chances to find our peers in our own neighbourhood, hence we miss out many opportunities for raising capital, finding partners, early stage investors or clients, and we limit our resource funnels. That is even more relevant about the CEE region, which has been historically always pretty much disconnected, though we have many similarities culturally, linguistically and in our history. With more than 100 million citizens, countries mostly part of the European Union, the new generations are willing to change that disconnect.” Péter Kovács, CEO, CESAwards NORDIC STARTUP AWARDS / 25

SAARC Global Startup Awards SAARC or South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation is a geopolitical union of nations in South Asia with member states including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives. The region was officially formulated to encourage development of economies and regional integrations. Each member country has their own set of diverse entrepreneur community that is not completely known by the other country. There is an immense amount of grassroot innovations and impacts made by startups in these countries.

With our series of awards program we are trying to dissolve the boundaries between the countries and foster a sense of innovation, knowledge sharing and exponential economic growth with startup impact. GSAwards - SAARC is a series of events leading to a grand finale where we bring together from founders, technopreneurs and investors to coworking spaces and more ecosystem supporters.

“SAARC at this instance is at the cusp of a startup revolution and we know this as the govts are involved in the process of nurturing their respective ecosystem. India has initiated a huge movement called startup India movement, Bhutan has a govt aided incubation, Pakistan has a significant startup ecosystem etc. Our event will be used as a bridge between the political boundaries to promote innovation across SAARC countries and to enable them to solve their problems at exponential rates.” Jerric Lyns John Co-Founder / CEO - Global Startup Awards : SAARC

Moaffak Ahmed

Karolina Fund

Best Business Angel

Best Social Tech Startup

Never applied for a job, always created his own - and several businesses. Moaffak is a serial entrepreneur turned early stage investor. He started a number of consulting and marketing agencies, but really learned to enjoy the rollercoaster of startup life at the financial technology firm Trema, a company he co-founded in 1992. Starting in Finland, which was then mostly known for forestry and heavy industry, wasn’t easy. Nokia was making toilet paper and rubber boots, and there wasn’t much Finnish high tech to talk about. And then there was the recession, the most serious since the independence of the country - so, not many eager clients to invest in new technology.

Our software and business solution is dedicated to create a great crowdfunding experience, for the platform owners, the campaigners and the backers. Karolina Fund reached its unique success rate by enabling creators to leverage the power of their own communities. Our job is to help people with ideas involve the crowd around them in making their passions come to live.

Trema quickly focused abroad and got its first customers in Sweden, namely ABB, Electrolux, Ericsson, and Volvo. From there onwards, Trema was built to a global company with offices in four continents. Trema (today: Wall Street Systems) became the leading technology solution for global corporations and financial institutions to manage their financial risks, assets and trading, with clients like European Central Bank, GE, Citibank and many others. In addition to his core responsibilities of marketing, communications and building the Trema brand, Moaffak was closely involved in building the global business with the core team: opening new offices, recruiting, fund raising, M&A, etc. in Europe and North America. The company grew to over 300 employees and 50m USD in revenues. The founders decided to exit the company in 2004 and it was later merged with Wall Street Systems. After the exit, Moaffak decided that he wanted to help young entrepreneurs and

34 / NORDIC STARTUP AWARDS

started investing his own capital to early stage startups. In addition, he is actively involved in a number of pro bono initiatives as a mentor and donor, including Startup Sauna, TheShortcut.org and many others. As an investor, Moaffak thrives on working with passionately ambitious entrepreneurs and creative people who want to disrupt boring businesses and create amazing companies - in areas ranging from finance, commerce and communications, to education, entertainment. He also enjoys the intellectual challenge of teaming up with visionary technologists and scientists to figure out how to turn their innovations into significant growth companies. Currently Moaffak is founding partner at Superhero Capital, and Co-founder & Chairman of Sisu Game Ventures. He is invested in over 40 startups, including Smartly.io, the fastest growing B2B software company in Europe; the amazing Next Games and Oradian, who is on a mission to deliver financial services to the next 2.5 billion people.

In that process, we are not just people who run a platform. Our team consists of designers, filmmakers, entrepreneurs and business hackers, and we celebrate every single idea that comes to live as our own. We do not advocate blindly trying for the lottery of overnight success from thin air. Instead, we understand the value of being local, both within and across national boundaries. Just as there are visionaries out there carrying the seeds of the next creative venture, there are also people out there who long to be part of making the next vinyl, novel, app or small business.

This is why 4 out of 5 projects that launch on our platform are successfully funded. After having ran an Icelandic reward based crowdfunding platform since 2012 with a world record success rate of +70%, Karolina.io was developed by the team to softwarise and standardise best practices business solution in crowdfunding. This year, we are in the process of building a built in business intelligence and artificial intelligence. When this has been developed far enough, our aim is to create artificial intelligence that talks to the customer during the preparation of a campaign and helps the campaigner to make decisions on what to do to maximise the funding during the campaign. Learn more about Karolina Fund at www.karolinafund.com.

Moaffak loves challenging established truths and asking seemingly innocent and stupid questions. He holds an MA from university of Helsinki (majoring in philosophy and studying economics, politics and sociology, in addition to 16 other subjects).

Umut Alp

Clearhaus

CTO Hero of the Year

Best Exponential Startup

Umut Alp is the CTO of Truecaller, the app which transforms mobile phone experience with a smarter set of features that will improve your daily life. Since he is employee #1 after the two cofounders of the company, he was involved in each and every step of the rollercoaster ride Truecaller experienced. During the past six years, both the product and his role evolved into new dimensions every few months, bringing new challenges and new rewards.

Clearhaus is an EU payment institution and acquirer, authorised by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority and Principal Member of Visa and MasterCard. Clearhaus provides payment solutions for online stores across Europe. By being an early adopter of new technology, Clearhaus has made online payments more simple, innovative and secure.

During the time he has been leading tech in Truecaller, the app has reached more than 300 million downloads on various smartphone platforms providing call identification and spam blocking for more than 2,5 billion phone number identities worldwide. These impressive numbers only happen if and when you have an impressive team and Umut sees “building an impressive team” as his biggest achievement. This world class product and team are also supported by world class VC investors like Sequoia, KPCB and Atomico to reach the next level of Truecaller. Before Truecaller, Umut had the chance to gain a wide spectrum of tech experience both as individual contributor and also as tech leader in different industries and product areas, ranging from VoIP, to robotics, image processing, algorithmic stock exchange brokerage, enterprise software. Each and every role brought him some valuable experience, but the common part was all

36 / NORDIC STARTUP AWARDS

about being a team, being resourceful and stretching your abilities to achieve more. Just the last year of Truecaller clearly sets the stage for the company’s future success, by more than doubling active users, creating a sustainable monetization strategy, being the trusted mobile identity.

Clearhaus was founded in 2011 with one goal: to digitalise the payment industry. Our wish is to deliver payment solutions to online stores across Europe. We built our own infrastructure and through new technology has online payments become faster, simpler and more secure.

Clearhaus handles transactions for 4000+ startups, eCommerce and corporate businesses around the world every day. Today we are having more than 4,000 merchants and a market share at 10-15% in Denmark. In 2015, we had 70% monthly growth in new merchants, and in 2016 we continue with two-digit growth rates. Clearhaus is represented in EU28. Primary markets are Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, UK, Netherlands, France, Spain, Slovenia and Belgium. We started out in Denmark, but today more than 60% of our revenue comes from outside Denmark.

Umut Alp, CTO at Truecaller. Although the size of the team overall is still not too big, the fact that more than 70% of employees are in engineering and product organization clearly shows the emphasis on product excellence. Being part of the leadership team of Truecaller, Umut feels very grateful to be part of such an organization with the “builder” mindset, rather than pure “seller” mindset. Truecaller will continue to bring safety and efficiency to millions of people’s lives: right where and when you need it the most during your phone communication.

Our vision is to make a competitive acquiring-institution, where merchants will be in focus proportion to Paperless Application, Best Customer-Service, Fast Account-Setup and our Sleek Dashboard. Clearhaus is built on personal relations, but it is also full of features. We understand payments and technology, while we care about conversion rates and good user experiences. We provide technology and cool features like, our Dashboard which provides insight into every transaction and every pay-out.

720 Degrees

Catchbox

Best IOT Startup

Best Bootstrapped

Do you know the feeling when obvious becomes oblivious? Spending majority of our life indoors could be one of those, and despite general availability of numerous research on health effects of indoors, it is usually not among our most common concerns.

Catchbox is the world’s first throwable wireless microphone that encourages audience engagement at events of all sizes. With its attractive soft exterior and auto mute technology, the clever device can be safely passed around without getting damaged or causing unwanted noises. Unlike normal microphones that are slow to pass around, Catchbox can be simply thrown into an audience, igniting a completely new way of organising discussions, whilst making events more engaging and fun.

“Few years back I noticed that we are lacking information about environments we work and live in, and that there are people affected by that. Once we looked into it as a team we realised there are many people and organisations who want to improve their indoor spaces, but did not feel they had the right tools to do that,” says Tomas about the beginnings. And 720 Degrees was born, with a mission to build a technology which could efficiently help with optimisation of indoor spaces for health, wellbeing & productivity of occupants. Now companies such as GE Healthcare, Nokia, Danske Bank and many others use the solution. The company employs sensors to collect

38 / NORDIC STARTUP AWARDS

real-time environmental data about thermal comfort, indoor air quality, and noise pollution among others. And through its cloud analytics millions of data points are transformed into intelligence helping customers to understand the conditions in their buildings and make better decisions.

During the same month of the award for ‘Best IoT Startup in Nordics’ 720 Degrees also closed a round of funding, and shortly after opened an office in New York. You can join their journey, they are hiring! Learn more at www.720.fi.

The device comes in two versions; Catchbox Lite for smaller events and Catchbox Pro for larger conferences. Universal Avenue

Medilync

Best Newcomer

Peoples Choice

Driven by tech, fired by lifestyle, Universal Avenue is the missing link between some of the world’s most game-changing tech brands and passionate people who value ownership over their work lives, location independence and flexibility. Enabled through an innovative app, we are changing the traditional idea of direct sales in a big way - and empowering people to live on their own terms.

For brands, the model allows them to scale and expand in existing and new markets with little risk. Brand Ambassadors are trained and certified on the brands they represent and only get paid per sale, making them a totally on-demand and flexible sales solution. As Brand Ambassadors are self-motivated entrepreneurs rather than a traditional sales force, they are passionate about their portfolio and eager to share it with everyone they meet. It’s all the benefits of traditional word of mouth, yet powered by technology. Local businesses benefit from access to trained digital consultants with a portfolio of game-changing tech products to help their business grow. It’s a personal, local relationship that comes with access to a worldwide network of products.

Medilync was founded with the goal of revolutionising the way diabetes is managed and treated in a value-based care landscape. Medilync begins all product design and development with three key concepts in mind: (1) alleviating the burden of diabetes with simplicity, (2) activating and engaging patients, as well as their families, friends and providers, and (3) answering the simple question of “would we want our friends and family using it?” Co-founder, Sigurjón Lydsson, envisioned a simplified, all-inone device to diminish the overall physical

Universal Avenue is a pioneering sales platform that connects brands to customers via a talented community of Brand Ambassadors. Our innovative whenever, wherever ethos takes the gig economy to the next level by enabling Brand Ambassadors to work independently and flexibly, with the full backup of their Universal Avenue coach, app and network. The process itself is simple. Brand Ambassadors are given full training through our app, which provides brand specific material and interactive exams that simulate real life scenarios. Once training is complete, they receive a portfolio of some of the world’s most exciting tech brands with which to form relationships and drive customer acquisition - plus ongoing support and skills development. They are completely location independent, they can work as much or as little as they choose, and with no earning cap, the sky’s the limit.

Medilync’s Insulync is a simplified all-in-one device. A person is now able to test their blood glucose levels, inject with insulin, and have their metrics automatically logged/synced to the cloud for all key stakeholders to see in real-time, rather than a bag with five separate objects - including a glucose meter, box of testing strips, blood lancet, and two pens (Rapid and Lantus) Cloudlync then enables the patient and their authorised stakeholders with the ability to run simple analytics and utilise action-oriented dashboards, which presents their data along with other relevant data from other linked sources and devices.

Insulync simplifies the physical burden of diabetes management into a single, high tech device designed to bring about a high touch world for those suffering from the disease. This high touch care management device leverages automatic data logging in Cloudlync to be shared to the patient’s key stakeholders in real-time, including family, entrusted friends and providers.

“Taking advantage of the bleeding edge technology for diabetics is long overdue. With our solution we can help diabetics take better care of their health across the board. Let technology ease the burden.” - Sigurjón Lydsson, Co-Founder.

Are Traasdahl

Realm

Founder of the Year

Startup of the Year

Tapad CEO & Founder, Are Traasdahl, has nearly 20 years’ experience in the mobile and digital space. He is a frequent contributor for outlets such as CNBC and Bloomberg News, and has been featured in Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, Ad Age and other major news outlets.

Realm’s mission from the start has been to help developers build better apps faster. We’re the creators of the Realm Mobile Platform -- which enables any development team, no matter the size, to create engaging apps and difficult-to-build features like twoway data sync, seamless offline experiences, and real-time collaboration, and the Realm Mobile Database, a free and fully open source data solution for mobile app developers.

This year, Are will receive the 2016 Norwegian-American Achievement award. He was recently named Nordic Startup Awards’ Founder of the Year for 2016 and EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2014. Traasdahl also currently holds several board positions across industryleading companies and heads Spring Capital, an investment holding company.

of Tapad Inc. for $360 million USD. Cofounders Are Traasdahl and Dag Liodden retain a 5% stake in the company. The Tapad acquisition is the fifth largest venturebacked M&A exit in New York since 2009. Born in Fannrem, Are continues to spend time in Norway fostering the Norwegian startup community. Recently he established an entrepreneurship “Propeller Program” through which Tapad will mentor five Norwegian startups to set them up for global expansion. Additionally, in September announced his intention a super-venture fund to early-stage Norwegian

Along with Co-Founder Dag Liodden, Are grew Tapad from a garage-startup to a powerhouse team backed by “a hell of a list of entrepreneurs who created some of the most valuable online advertising companies of the last decade” (TechCrunch). Today, the company offers the largest in-market opportunity for marketers to address the ever-evolving reality of media consumption on smartphones, tablets, home computers and smart TVs. Based in New York, Tapad now has more than 200 employees with 14 offices worldwide. In February 2016, Telenor Group entered into an agreement to acquire approximately 95%

2016, Are to create help fund Startups.

Prior to Tapad, he founded Thumbplay, a mobile entertainment service that he grew to more than $100 MM in revenues in less than three years before he exited the company (the company, later acquired by Clear Channel, is now called iHeartRadio). Previously, he was a senior executive with Telenor Group, an international provider of telecom, data and media communications services.

We were founded in 2011 by Alexander Stigsen, CEO and Bjarne Christiansen, COO. Childhood friends from Denmark, the two worked together as mobile database engineers at Nokia during the feature phone era, where they saw the potential of very small, very efficient mobile databases. In fact, when they went out on their own as a Y Combinator startup, they incorporated under the name TightDB. We later changed the name to Realm after recognizing the potential of the technology as a platform. We’re very proud to be loved by mobile developers for our elegance and ease of use, and to be relied on by startups and the Fortune 500 alike for how we can help make their flagship apps better.

Today, our products have had more than a billion user installs as a part of some of the most well-known mobile apps in the world -- including apps from Starbucks, Groupon, EasyJet, Intel, Hyundai, the Bundesliga, Siemens, Bosch, and the BBC.

Developers choose the Realm database because it is a cross-platform embedded object database that is easier and often faster than the alternatives. They choose the new Realm platform because it provides real time data synchronization and event handling seamlessly and automatically, making it easy for them to build apps with sophisticated and engaging real time features.

WeLoveStartups is a non-profit association established in December 2014. Their activities are centered around the “Pay-itforward” mindset. The vision is to create a movement that engages all companies and entrepreneurial stakeholders in Denmark in creating successful startups through knowledge sharing, network and handing out smart startup funding for early stage startups. The first round of smart funding was conducted in the spring of 2015 and the second round in March 2016 through the event Fundraise Denmark’s future. Until now they have helped nine startups with smart funding, and countless with mentors, knowledge sharing and network.

The association operates through a paid secretariat, a highly experienced board and more than 80 volunteering ambassadors, mentors and experts. Their many collaborators and sponsors finance the startup funding. Highly qualified industry experts and serial entrepreneurs evaluate the applicants. Furthermore, the volunteering expert mentors and sponsors are available to support the receivers of smart money in their future growth. Read more about the startups they have helped, apply for support and meet the people behind the concept on www.welovestartups.dk and their event site funddenmark.dk (in Danish).

Startup Guide The Startup Guide concept was born in Berlin, when founder Sissel Hansen experienced the challenges of starting up in a new city, in a new country, on her own. She came up with the idea of a guide and put together a team, which resulted in the first guide book being released in the summer of 2014. The Berlin book has been sold in more than 3000 copies across 30 stores. In the spring of 2015 the next guide was released in Aarhus. Now the turn has come to Copenhagen, where the startup scene has developed tremendously over the past 5 years. Many initiatives have been taken to build the startup scene in Copenhagen and the city is slowly starting to pop up on the global startup map. want to help foster that, so Denmark can continue to be on the forefront of a creative and entrepreneurial knowledge society.
