Getting started in second life April 2008 Views of New Hope

Welcome to ArriveUK LanguageHouse in SL We are offering a new ways to experience ArriveUK activities using a virtual world called Second Life. ArriveUK LanguageHouse, your online course, has created a class area in the virtual world of Second Life (SL). Here you can find and do some activities for your course, either on your own or with friends. Second Life is free to join. If you need to create an avatar, you’ll need to create an account at the Second Life website. http:// www.secondlife.com/join and select join from the top right hand side. Feel free to skip the join a community feature. Choose an avatar from the list. Don’t worry you can change your appearance later. You’ll need to check your email address to verify your account and to log into Second Life, so please make sure you use a real address. Once you have this, you can log into SL and begin orientation at the Second Life orientation centre.

The orientation and media centre

The learning resources centre

The orientation and media centre can be found on the wharf near the ship. It is the central building as in the picture above.

The learning resources centre can be found to the side of the orientation and media centre on the wharf. Follow the arrows past the shop.

Here you can find a number of things to do: New Resident Kits - landmarks and information to get you started. Boxes of clothes, shapes and hair to change your appearance. Watch the videos for the course. The video transcript and question are next to it. You can see the Twitter screen to see the answers to the video question. Leave a message on the noticeboard to introduce yourself.

Click on objects to interact with them. You can open boxes, watch videos and slideshow, start the quiz.

Here you can find a number of things to do: Walk around a large map of Southampton and the area with points of interest marked. View your ArriveUK LanguageHouse activities. View a slideshow of Southampton maps. Read a book about the university and Southampton. Take the ArriveUK LanguageHouse quiz to test your knowledge. Locate key University locations on the local area map.

Click on the slideshow to move it forwards, the learning activity will open a window and the book will move to a different page

Useful Second Life Skills The Importance of Home Set your Home to ArriveUK LanguageHouse so that if you ever feel unsafe you can quickly Teleport teleport or TP home. To set ArriveUK as your Home follow the diagram below

To TP home: Use the World > Teleport Home on the menu (shown above) PC - Control + Shift + H Mac - Command + Shift + H

Select the Movement Controls in the View menu at the top.
