Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., (along with the other three historically African-American National PanHellenic Council Sororal organizations), ranks in precise order of founding date. That is, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is the third oldest historically African-American Sorority in the Bronx and boasts the third largest membership total as of the close of our Sorority Year, June 2013. However, in recent months, Bronx Sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. have not only been prominently featured in national news reports (http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/rallies-spreadnationwide-support-trayvon-martin-19724849); women of Kappa Epsilon Zeta Chapter were also @%)(,1%=& +-& ("%& /+:%1& +@& ("%& D1+-E& F%--*& F1%''2& & BG"%& D1+-E& G)$HC& $+/)$& /)8$%& -%(9+1H& '"+9& (http://www.bronxnet.org/tv/bronxtalk/viewvideo/2463/bronxtalk/bronxtalk--mar-4-2013); a recent March of Dimes article and a column in the NY Amsterdam News. SCHOLARSHIP Through the Kappa Epsilon Zeta Scholarship Fund, during Sorority service year October 2011 A June 2012, KEZ awarded a deserving young woman, (Ms. Marilyn Vasquez), a scholarship award of $4,000. Since the inception of the Kappa Epsilon Zeta Scholarship Fund in 2005, KEZ provides an award to a young woman who either lives or attends high school in the Bronx. Monies for the award are raised through our annual Scholarship Walk-A-Thon, (which occurs each year in the Spring), and individual contributions. Annually, our @,-=&B)00$#/)(#+-&0%1#+=C begins on our organizational M+,-=%1'6&N)*2&O)-,)1*&PQth, and closes on tax day, or April 15th, each year. She applied, (and was accepted to), both Princeton and Yale and is currently a

sophomore at Yale! It is the custom of the KEZ Scholarship Committee to track and follow the progress of our recipients and we keep in touch with Marilyn through e-mail and social media. She is doing wonderfully at Yale and we plan to continue our relationship with her over time.

After careful scrutiny, the review committee came to unanimous consensus that the winner would be Ms. Ashley Ramos graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in the Bronx. (Please see Appendix III for video footage). October 2012 -- Hurricane Sandy Response/ Joint Effort of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. As residents of the Bronx and Westchester County, the women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. A Kappa Epsilon Zeta Chapter felt instinctively that we could, (and should), do something actionable to respond to those in need. In truth, it took us a few days as a chapter to land on our own feet after the storm. Some families of KEZ had to evacuate, several lost power for several days and a number of Sorors had trouble procuring generators and gasoline A like so many other New Yorkers. As the initial days went on however, (and as a chapter we assessed that overall we were in a much better position than our fellow New Yorkers), we decided to organize a very impromptu donation and collection drive. We created a flyer that announced that we would be co collecting donated items on Saturday, November 10th 2013 from 7AM until 10 AM at the Women12Academy of Excellence High School (WAE) at 456 White Plains Road in the Bronx where KEZ Soror Dr. Arnette Crocker is the Principal. By all accounts, the New :@! !

Jersey Shore, parts of Long Island, Staten Island, lower Manhattan, Breezy Point, Far Rockaway, Queens and Coney Island, Brooklyn were amongst the hardest-hit areas.

New Yorkers by the

thousands were left without electrical power, transportation or heat. Residents were trapped in homes due to dangerous flood waters, (and in the worse scenarios), whole homes and neighborhoods were devastated by flood waters or fire -- or both. Approximately 24 hours into our planning, we reached out to our Brother Chapter Beta Psi Sigma by way of Brothers Kevin Miller and Victor Brewster. Responding immediately, our Brothers did not hesitate to partner with us in this venture. The Brothers pledged their support by planning to bring donations and supplies, but more importantly they promised to join us in the most early part of the collection period (at 7AM) to make themselves available to safely place items on, and pack the truck. Not only did the Brothers of Beta Psi Sigma arrive to help us and thus kept their word, they arrived much earlier than was asked of them! The men of Beta Psi Sigma Chapter helped to organize the entire drop-off; they supervised a staging area at the Women6'& I/)=%7*& +@& 4E/%$$%-/%2&they lifted boxes of 10-15 pounds (and more) and they arranged items on the rented U-Haul truck in such a way that when transporting, items would not be jarred or move about in an unsafe manner. Important to note, our Brothers also provided a strong male presence as an element of safety for the women and children gathered to bring donations. R,00$#%'&@+1& R)-=*6'& :#/(#7'& 9%1%& 81+,."(& per a list of items advertised on our joint Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta flyer.

Family,

neighborhoods, friends, and several members of the Blue and White family stopped by WAE with items to donate. On the flyer we indicated the items most needed -- as reported to us from community leaders from Brooklyn. Toiletries, bottled water, socks, new wash cloths and towels, clothes, blankets, baby formula and baby wipes, feminine products and a large assortment of nonperishable food items arrived by the dozens. By 10:15AM the Brothers had packed the truck to :Y! !

near capacity with all the items donated that morning. All told, we estimate a collection between our two chapters of nearly $5,000.00 worth of goods, food and clothing.

Madame NYS

Director, Shanell Robinson stopped by to assess our progress on her way to X4J&/")0(%16'&R)-=*& Relief effort. We continue to be grateful to Madame NYS Director Robinson for her consistent support. Why Coney Island? Soror Monica Britton, (Director of Marketing at St. F),$6'& Y+77,-#(*& D)0(#'(& Y",1/"& #-& D1++H$*-), has a connection with the Coney Lighthouse Mission through "%1& 9+1H& )(& R(?& F),$6'?& & G"%& ^#."("+,'%& S#''#+- has long since served as a food distribution center, and '+,0& H#(/"%-2& @+1& D1++H$*-6s neediest.

Soror Britton

reached out to the Lighthouse Mission and inquired

about the extent of their damage after the storm.

Just two blocks from the

Coney Island shore, the Lighthouse Mission had been nearly completely decimated by putrid flood waters, mud, debris and wind damage. They reported that they had been unable for several days to use their kitchen facilities to feed those coming to their soup kitchen. When the committee met to determine a viable drop-off point, (a location that would be able to utilize our donations immediately), Soror Britton mentioned the Lighthouse Mission, and arrangements were made to bring our donations directly to them.

Journey to Coney Island The trip from WAE in the Bronx to the Lighthouse Mission Church in Coney Island was an approximately 32-mile/45-minute trip.

Pastor Fusco at the Lighthouse Mission Church was

expecting us to arrive with items at approximately Noon on Saturday, 11/10. Brother Al Williams, (Kappa Beta Sigma Chapter) and husband of KEZ Soror Nicole Williams, had come out with his wife and son to bring donations and help in any way that he could. As he came to understand our plan to drive the truck to Brooklyn ourselves, Bro. Williams refused to allow us to do so. As a NYPD detective he was able to drive the truck on a NYC highway not usually accessible to commercial vehicles A thus shortening our trip and getting us to Coney Island and back safely. Sorors who took the trip to Coney Island rode with Soror Williams in her car. *Before leaving, Brother and Pastor Kevin Miller, of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Beta Psi Sigma Chapter (husband of KEZ Soror Myra Y. Miller), gathered us for a word of prayer. As a family, Brother Miller took us in prayer before the Lord and asked for mercy for those affected by this tragic storm as well as traveling mercies for those distributing items in Brooklyn. The Distribution and Need: What we saw in Coney Island was staggering. We were told that conditions in the Far Rockaways were worse. The devastation we witnessed did not compare to what was being shown in the media by any stretch. There was sand, and debris and flooded furniture on lawns. The stench in the air was an over-powering putrid mix of sewage and whatever else may have died in the flood waters. The need of the people was clearly immense. Before we could even get the truck fully unloaded most of the items were distributed. We were met by Pastor Fusco and about six members of his food pantry team/congregation. They stopped work in their building, which was 100% decimated, and jumped on to the truck. They helped to unload it while Sorors and Bro. Williams attempted to create an organized distribution A9! !

system right there on the street. Pastor Fusco provided four 6-foot long tables. As best possible, (on each table), we placed items according to category (toiletries, food, clothing, etc.). While we did our best to organize the distribution, the need was intense and immediate and there were residents IMMEDIATELY in line to receive goods. It became necessary for Bro. Williams to firmly 1%U,%'(&(")(&("+'%&#-&-%%=&B-+(&"+)1=C&8,(&1)("%1&$%):%&%-+,."&#(%7'&@+1&)'&7)-*&1%'#=%-('&(+&8%& able to supplies; but the great need in the community was intense. As we unloaded the truck five FEMA representatives (who were assessing the damage in the area) approached Soror Gilliard and wanted to know who we were.

They asked, "who are you

people?... Where did you come from?...Why did you choose to come out here?" Gilliard stated the facts and provided the full names of both organizations.

Soror

The FEMA

representatives wrote down that information and asked could they contact us at a later date to get more information about our organizations and a summary of items collected.

Soror Gilliard

provided her mobile phone number and email address. As of this writing, we have not been contacted further. It is difficult to estimate the actual number of persons that were aided in this effort. However, not one item was left on the truck. We distributed ALL the food, water, juices, toiletries, blankets, baby goods and cleaning supplies with 45 minutes. Residents were still taking clothing items as we prepared to leave the area. Residents were given coats, hats, scarfs, gloves, sweaters, jeans, slacks and dozens of pairs of clean fresh socks A and sadly many dressed themselves on the spot. As of a result of this joint family effort, however, there was no bureaucratic wait or process that prolonged the relief. Items collected in the morning were provided to victims who were warmer, who had something to eat, and who were given much needed supplies directly in their hands 8%@+1%&("%&=)*6'&%-=?&

GREETINGS! If you research the meaning of the word “reclamation” you’ll see a myriad of synonyms: restore, recapture, repossess. When I “Came Home to Zeta” in 2008 I honestly did not feel the need to “recapture” my love for the organization, or to recapture my deep affection for my Sorors – because that had never changed. I did, however, feel the need to repossess my seat as a sister of the dove and very much desired to restore my commitment to the oath I took in 1987. While still sitting on the sidelines, there were things I could see needed building up in our sisterhood. After a time, my spirit would not let me rest until I had it made up in my mind that I wasn’t going to wait any longer but rather begin my search for the “right” chapter home. As in all my life decisions, I went first to God to ask for direction. Shortly after my prayer, I was having tea with a dear friend at my favorite Harlem bistro. Sitting not far away were three young ladies – two of whom were Sorors at the time (the third became our Soror in the Fall of 2009)! I got up and introduced myself as a Zeta -- and the squealing began! One of the Sorors animatedly invited me to visit a KEZ meeting and after just one afternoon that glorious third Saturday, I was hooked! As our immediate past Basileus, (and now NYS Phylacter Soror Nilda E. Rivera Esq.), shared that day about areas in the organization that needed building up -- I was ready to roll up my sleeves. I have not looked back since. Since 2008, my love for KEZ has only deepened by the day. In these past few years the women in this chapter have become family. As we have served together, my sense of Sisterhood; my strive for Finer Womanhood; my love for Scholarship and my passion for service has grown exponentially because of how inspired I am by the pure “awesomeness” of KEZ women. This chapter, the way we function, the way we work – and the way we love is truly representative of what drew me to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in the first place! There is a sense in KEZ of deep sincerity and loyalty to one another. This is what I saw in the organization at first and being a part of KEZ only magnifies my love for Zeta Phi Beta as a whole. It’s touchingly ironic how destiny has come full circle. As I take my seat as new chapter President, the Soror that I met in that café that day -- (the Soror responsible for bringing me into KEZ, Soror Michleyn Johnson, R.N.) -- now rightfully serves as our recently appointed Reclamation Chair. This makes perfect sense to me. As KEZ moves forward, my vision is that we fully attain the collective destiny that I believe God has designed for us. A destiny full of promise; full of earnestness of heart and purpose – and full of greatness for the good people of the Bronx -- and for Zetas everywhere!

A word from a reclaimed Soror... I was born in Brooklyn, NY. At the age of 13 my family and I moved to the Long Island suburb of Uniondale, New York. In 1987, I graduated from Uniondale High School and from 1987 to 1988 I attended St. John's University in Queens, NY. In 1988 I decided transfer to the State University of New York at Albany (SUNY Albany) where I earned my BA degree in English with a minor in Business in 1992. Currently, I am employed as a Senior Workers Compensation Risk Manager for a Fortune 500 construction company in 2011 KEZ reclaim, Soror Bobb

Connecticut.

While at SUNY Albany, I became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Epsilon Nu undergraduate chapter in Spring 1991. I was attracted to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., because of how the women conducted themselves and set high standards that epitomized finer womanhood. I admired all that the ZETAs represented and decided to become a member of an organization committed to helping others while projecting an image of intelligent and professional women. "

KEZ Membership Experience | Retention, Reclamation & Recruitment! Welcome to the 2012-2013 sorority year! ! As KEZ's 1st Anti-Basileus, I am elated to be back in the role for the third time since transferring in back in 1997. I love this position. I truly enjoy encouraging our inactive sorors to re-ignite their Zeta light by assisting in providing a welcoming & sisterly environment for them to re-acclimate into. As The Bronx borough chapter of ZETA, we currently have an awesome mix of thirty-eight women representing varying professional skillsets - from engineering to marketing, education and healthcare, non-profit gurus, creative event planners, math mavens, corporate executives and more. !Ranging in age from early-mid 20s to mid 40s, while KEZ sorors passionately serve The Bronx, we live not only in the borough but also in Kings, Queens, Westchester and Rockland counties, with a couple of our members crossing the bridge from New Jersey to do the work of ZETA with us.! Along with our awesome Reclamation Coordinator, Soror Michelyn Johnson, we are here to serve you - our inactive soror(s) looking for a ZETA home that fits her lifestyle and passion for service. Finer Women who will work within our current fabric and stitch a new patch of her own that reflects our sorority's ideals, rooted in being the best possible representative of our sisterhood. Yes, being active is a financial commitment. Aside from our annual chapter dues (which vary depending on your designation), there are philanthropic & development initiatives that we do throughout the year that will require not only your time & talents, but your financial support to better our communities & neighbors in The Boogie Down.! The success and continued legacy of our sorority is dependent upon the commitment and dedication of our members, members just like you who for whatever reason had to take a break from serving ZETA.! The good thing is, our oath speaks to our membership being a lifelong commitment, meaning, ZETA will always be here when you are able to serve her again.! With over 800 chapters across the country, Germany, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, there are few places a Soror can go without being able to connect with her sisters.! That is the blessing of sorority, the unending line of connectivity that exists, if we stay connected.! So reconnect with ZETA today through Kappa Epsilon Zeta Chapter, you won't be disappointed.!

Soror Monica Britton - 1st Anti-Basileus, Kappa Epsilon Zeta Chapter | Spring 1991, Epsilon Nu Chapter, University at Albany (NY)

A word from a reclaimed Soror.... (continued from page 2) Following my graduation from SUNY Albany in 1992, I joined the Albany graduate chapter, Omicron Epsilon Zeta. In 2011, after relocating to New York City and taking some time away from the sorority to raise my family, I decided to renew my commitment to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and was reclaimed into the Kappa Epsilon Zeta (KEZ) Chapter. " Initially, what drew me to KEZ was what I was told about the great work and accomplishments of the chapter. Additionally, after meeting and interacting with the Sorors of KEZ, I was reminded of what initially attracted me to Zeta- the representation of strong, determined women who exemplify finer womanhood while simultaneously giving back to the community. I have been married for 20 years to Bro. Shawn Bobb (Spring 1989, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Mu Iota Chapter; currently Epsilon Sigma Chapter - NYC, NY) and we are the proud parents of two children, Tiffany and Terrell, who are both attending college. I am looking forward to remaining active and contributing to the growth of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
