Mission: A great place to live
Nestled on a southern coastal mountain slope, the District of Mission overlooks the lush valley of the mighty Fraser River. Founded in 1892, Mission, a rapidly growing, dynamic community, is home to a population of 38,000 residents.
Ideally situated, Mission is just a 15-minute drive from the US border, and approximately 70 kilometres east of the City of Vancouver. It is surrounded by the incredible beauty of mountainous vistas and natural forest settings.
The climate is warm in the summer and mild and wet in the winter. Flowers bloom most of the year, as the area is naturally hospitable to a wide variety of plant life and vegetation.

Mission Visitor Guide 2016
At the turn of the century, the District of Mission’s shopping junction was still a fiberglass plant, the old downtown casino was an even older Safeway and – a guild of weavers and spinners wove a tartan for the district. The city adopted the gift as its official tartan. The Mission Weavers and Spinners guild (MWSG) created it in the late ’90s to reflect the natural and industrial history of the Mission area. It’s etched with the black of the coal and railway lines. The thin brown lines
are for the cedar shakes. Blue patches illustrate the Fraser River. Dark green shows the forests – pale green for the farming – and salmon pink for the salmon and berries. Four pieces of the tartan were framed, said Mady Pechler, MWSG treasurer. “There is one at city hall, one is here in the loom room, one is at the Mission Arts Centre and one is at Mission’s sister city of Oyama, Japan.” The tartan is registered at the Scottish Tartan Society of Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Archive, and can be accessed online by
any Mission resident. Mission also has an official flower called the Caitlin Rhododendron, which is a fusion between two different rhododendrons, and named after the creator’s daughter. The Mission Coat of Arms features two deer standing upon a white shield. Upon the shield is the favoured cross of the Oblate Fathers placed over the Mission cross, creating a cross tipped with conifers. This symbolizes both the Catholic origins of the District and its arboreal wealth.

If you park at Saunders Loop you can access the mountain via a gravel road or climb any of the trails to the top. In total there are approximately 20 trails on the mountain. The majority of the trails on Bear Mountain are blues and blacks, the trails are very well built, drained, and maintained, and good in all weather conditions! • Red Mountain offers quintessential e ndurance trails like Crazy 8s and Mastodon that will keep you on your toes. Situated just across the road from Bear Mountain, off Dewdney Trunk Rd., Red Mountain has many diverse trail offerings. Those who frequent Red know that there are always new lines just waiting to be conquered. Superb single track, challenging techy climbs, and fall lines steep enough to scare your pants off – the trails on Red have it all! • Heritage Park has trails for any skill s et and offer breath-taking forest and scenery to be enjoyed by everybody. The trails in-behind Heritage Park are all well marked, and have a wide variety of technicality – green to black diamond. There are trails for any skill set with breath taking forest and scenery to be enjoyed by everybody.

Rich with History Mission’s history goes back to the first inhabitants of the region, the Sto:lo, or the People of the River. Missionary Leon Fouquet founded St. Mary’s Mission in 1862. By 1883, the church had relocated from the banks of the Fraser River to the site of today’s Fraser River Heritage Park.
It’s always wa ayss good tto o have a plan - let me help. e help elp.
The Town of Mission City began as a land promotion. The town’s core was auctioned off at the “Great Land Sale” of 1891. The name Mission City was chosen due to the site’s proximity to the historic St. Mary’s Mission of the Oblate order just east of town.

In 1891 the Mission train bridge was the only crossing of the Fraser River in the Fraser Valley The townsite, in the early 1890s was under provincial control, but the rural parts surrounding the townsite was not. As a result, the rural residents had trouble with civic issues like road-building, and they formed the Corporation of the District of Mission to deal with such issues. The townsite boundaries were from present-day 14th Ave. to the Fraser River and from Cedar Ave. in the west to Mary Street. 1904 saw B.C.’s first train robbery near Mission, the handiwork of the notorious outlaw Bill Miner. The townsite was legally recognized as the Village of Mission in 1922. The Village had its name changed to the Village of Mission City in 1950. In 1958, the Village became the first in BC to change to Town status. At this time, a council and a Mayor was elected to run the Town.
During all this time, the Corporation of the District of Mission City continued to run independently. An amalgamation referendum was held in 1969 and people voted in favor of the amalgamation. On November 1, 1969, the Town of Mission City and the Corporation of the District of Mission united to become the District of Mission. Main Street, “Downtown” has historically been an important business core for Mission residents. The three main business blocks, from Horne Street in the east to Grand Street in the west contained the bulk of the shops, with some in the close periphery. A lot of the business proprietors had homes on Second and Third Avenue, not far from downtown. To learn more about our history visit the Mission Museum, 33215 Second Avenue. Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey attracts thousands of visitors each year to its serene perch high above the Fraser Valley. Westminster Abbey is a Benedictine monastery of priests and brothers who dedicate their lives to God.
The iconic bell tower can be seen and the bells heard from across the Fraser Valley. The monks ring many of the 10 bells daily before Mass, and for 15 minutes before Mass and Vespers on Sundays.

The church is 162 feet long by 110 feet wide and contains 64 stained glass windows. The rainbow coloured glass creates windows that stand 22 feet high around the perimeter of the church. The dome of coloured glass rises 50 feet above the altar, allowing shafts of light to stream into the church. Visitors are welcome, and asked to follow the dress code of no shorts or overly exposed skin, when entering the Abbey Church. No cycling, picnics or dogs are allowed on the grounds.

Year-round tax service provided.
You don’t have to wait until tax time to get answers to your tax questions.
The 21st annual Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival is set for Nov. 19-20, 2016. Angeline Haslett photos
Come to H&R Block and you’ll get the same fast, friendly, accurate service you get when we prepare your return.
The enormously popular event takes place the third weekend in November in perhaps the most biologically diverse and important areas in British Columbia. This is the main event that attracts visitors to Mission and Harrison Mills during the entire “Season of the Eagles and Salmon.” Within three kilometres of the Harrison Crossing Bridge, thousands of eagles gather at that time of year, all because of a few conditions that align perfectly. Millions of salmon pass through the area on their way to the spawning grounds, and the eagles come to feed.

It’s a great opportunity to get a first-hand look at B.C.’s wild side. You can experience the “wild side” of B.C. in a safe, comfortable and even luxurious way with one of the Bald Eagle Festival’ biggest sponsors, Fraser River Safari Jet Boat Tours. Fraser River Safari’s boat whizzes along at up to 50 km/h (30 mph) while watching for eagles, bears and deer on the shoreline. Along the way, guests learn about the historical, natural and cultural importance of the Mighty Fraser. For information visit www.fraserriversafari.com

Folk Music Festival
The 29th annual Mission Folk Music Festival (MFMF) is coming to Fraser River Heritage Park from July 22 to 24, 2016. Like festivals in the past, this year’s event will feature amazing acts from around the world. Since the festival began, back in 1988, world-class performers have travelled to Mission to partake in a weekend of great music, fun and camaraderie. In the past three decades, performers including Valdy, Buffy Sainte-Marie and most recently Sylvia Tyson, have graced the festival stage. 42
