Picked 1st section of 92 Inch Inlet Shaft Elbow
Constructing a bulkhead for the 92 Inch Elbow (1/11/2010)
By Craig Balben, San Diego Water Authority The San Diego County Water Authority is currently constructing new water facilities in the northwestern portion of Mission Trails Regional Park. The new facilities include a tunnel for a new section of pipeline approximately one mile long, a new flow regulatory structure, a new crossing of the San Diego River and demolition of the existing blue vent structures. The Water Authority's existing Second Aqueduct runs north to south through the western portion of the park. The aqueduct contains separate pipelines for treated and untreated water. An underground tunnel is being constructed and new sections of pipe are currently being installed to replace two smaller untreated water pipeline sections. The new pipeline will be larger and continued on page 11

Spring's a-poppin' at Mission Trails Regional Park By Pam Crooks Spring is popping out all over Mission Trails Regional Park. Mountains and meadows are green and lush, wildflowers blooming, the San Diego River rushing, waterfalls (seldom seen) are flowing. With over 6,000 acres and 40 miles of hiking and biking trails available to enjoy in one of America's largest natural urban parks, now is a great time for San Diegans to visit their Park, located only 15 minutes from the heart of the City. Special programs currently being offered are designed to encourage people to explore the Park as it responds to winter rains and warm spring temperatures. A sampling of these activities include wildlife tracking walks, musical concerts in the outdoor amphitheater, a nature photography contest, night hikes, and a day-long event designed especially for young families. Details may be found at www.mtrp.org. continued on page 10
Girl Scouts, together for 13 years, have made a difference performing community service work with a focus on the homeless A look at the 9 young women soon to graduate and prepare for college. Girl Scout Troop #3053 has been together since the fall of 1997 when they began as a Daisy Troop. The troop composition has changed somewhat over the years with the addition of some new girls as others moved on. Troop #3053 went from thirteen members in kindergarten to nine currently. Over the past 13 years, the troop participated in many scouting events and encampments, earned Try-It merit badges and volunteered in the community. One particular focus of the troop's activities over the years has been volunteering with homeless organizations. For example, they have assisted at the Interfaith Shelter at Temple continued on page 13

Ask the Cop By Officer Christina Burhans, San Diego Police Dept.
Re: Oil Dripping Vehicle
Allied Gardens News By Sherry Kelly, Boardmember, Allied Gardens Community Council
Commemorative Park Bench Honoring Edith Dabbs Q: An age old problem for our area is the one inconsiderate neighbor who continues to park their old, battered, oil dripping vehicle in front of two homes but not his own. Officer Christina Burhans Oil is now in the street in front of their homes where they are working very hard to maintain beautiful residences. This person loves to move his car on Thursdays and leave it in front of other homes all weekend- as a matter of fact this car rarely moves. Any thought for us? A: There are a couple of things you can do that may be helpful. I would suggest contacting our Vehicle Abatement Unit regarding the potential 72-hour violations. Section 86.23 (g) of the San Diego Municipal Code, states it is unlawful for any person to store, or cause to be stored, any vehicle on any street. A vehicle is considered stored when it has been left standing on a street without having been moved more than one-tenth of a mile within a seventy-two consecutive hour period. Complaints can be made over the phone by calling (858) 4957856 or on line at http://www.sandiego.gov/police/forms/72.hr.shtml. I would also suggest reporting the oil-dripping vehicle to the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program at (619) 235-1000 or on line at http:// www.sandiego.gov/stormwater/index.shtml. Mission Times Courier Readers: I want to use this column as a resource for residents who may have questions, concerns and suggestions. I encourage your letters. Please contact me via email at askthecop@missiontimescourier.com and I will answer your questions and address your concerns. I am looking forward to hearing from residents in Eastern Division as we work toward finding public safety solutions.
Local Non-Profit Hosts 19th Annual CPR Saturday Event - Sat. March 13th The American Red Cross invites all San Diegans for Free Public CPR Training and Certification. The San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross will be hosting its 19th Annual CPR Saturday event on Saturday, March 13, 2010, where members of the public can get CPR training and certification at no charge. For the past 18 years, the local Red Cross has offered the San Diego community a free three-hour training course in CPR. Last year's event was a resounding success bringing the number of CPR Certified San Diegans to a whopping 36,000. CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a combination of chest compressions and rescue breathing used in cardiac arrest emergencies. Cardiac arrest is the condition in which the heart stops functioning. In such an emergency, CPR can help to circulate blood (which contains oxygen) to vital organs while waiting for medical assistance. CPR can double the chance of survival. According to the American Heart Association, there are over 294,850 emergency-medical-services-treated out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually in the United States and over 138,000 coronary heart disease deaths that happen within one hour of symptom onset. This indicates that an individual who can recognize the symptoms of cardiac arrest, who acts fast to administer CPR and calls 9-1-1 for medical assistance, can greatly increase the chance of survival for someone experiencing a cardiac emergency. At the 19th Annual CPR Saturday event, you will learn how to recognize the symptoms of cardiac arrest, how to administer immediate care and other vital steps to take in a cardiac emergency but most importantly, you will learn how to save a life. The American Red Cross thanks 2010 CPR Saturday sponsors - Cymer, Emerson Network Power, Soft Rock KyXy 96.5 and ACE Parking, for their support. Details of the 19th Annual CPR Saturday Date: Saturday, March 13, 2010 Venue: San Diego Concourse - Golden Hall. 202 C Street, San Diego, CA 92101(Between B St. and 3rd Ave.) Sessions Start: 7am., 8am., 9am., 10am., 11am. 12 pm., and 1pm. For more information, please visit www.sdarc.org. You can also call (858) 309-1369 or email cprsaturday@sdarc.org. About the American Red Cross, San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter The American Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on the generosity of the American people to provide our programs and services. The San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter is leading the effort to make San Diego and Imperial Counties "America's most prepared communities." With the public's ongoing support we provide life saving preparedness training; disaster relief services; 24-hour emergency services to deployed military personnel and their families; and nutritional counseling through our Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. By Barbara Cleves Anderson We read that humans are hardwired to surround themselves with other humans; family and friends are part of our pod. Knowing people for a long time but knowing little about them happens and particularly at Lake Murray where we spend lots of time. Other places where people congregate are the same. People that go to Lake Murray for an hour or two at approximately the same time each day are bound to know each other. They become so familiar and comfortable that we think of them as friends, intimates and people that we consider being our advocates. We say that we are like a family but we really don't know a great deal about each other. We stop for a few minutes to chat, a friendly wave or greeting. Word gets around when others are missing, an illness, a trip, if there is project in the offing or news they hear on their I-Pod. The lake friends' communication line is stronger than a prison grapevine. Someone always knows what is going on. Just ask anyone. If they don't know the answer, they know someone who does. Today Dana Dugan heard on her IPod that there was an earthquake this morning in Chile. On 9/11 I was told on my run that a plane crashed into the twin towers in New York and by the time I was on my way home the third crash had taken place. This was long before most people were having their coffee. John and Sean have been running at the lake for years. I met John Lovberg long before I got to meet his wife Sue or their son. They brought their new dog, Dixie to the lake for its inauguration run. I heard that John was a scientist; he is actually a physicist. He was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He now lives in Kensington. Lake people know Sean Prendergast too but I wonder how many know he was born in Castlemain, County Kerry Ireland. He goes back to Ireland occasionally to help his dad on the farm. He and his family live in Del Cerro. Sean is a Certified Public Accountant. John has been running at the lake for about 10 years. Sean started running there in 1986. Each has run 17 marathons including all of the 12 Rock N Roll marathons. The guys sort of run together, I say sort of, because one of them is always in front of the other. I think it has something to do with when the endorphins kick in. By the way, Sean is known as John at the lake. His real name is Sean so that is what I like to call him. Sean is the one with the red curly hair and maybe some freckles. John is blond and taller. Sean and John met each other at their daughters' school doing volunteer work. The men's daughters: Aine Predergast is 20 years old and Lilli Lovberg is 21 years old. Each started dancing around five years of age. They dance with Malone Academy of Irish Dance. Aine and Lilli have competed in local, regional national and world competitions, solo and in teams in the United States Lilli, on the left, with Aine and in Ireland. Lilli was last year's Miss Colleen of the annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade. She represented San Diego in the Maiden of the Mourne pageant in Ireland. Aine is this year's Miss Colleen and will travel to Ireland to compete in the Maiden of the Mourne pageant in August. Aine has danced in the world championship of Irish Dance in Ireland three times. Aine is studying political science with a minor in women's studies. Lilly wants to be a fashion consultant. Congratulations ladies and to your parents Sean and Mary, John and Sue. After all these years, it is good to learn about your families. ***** The San Diego version of torrential rains created the huge sinkhole at the end of San Carlos Bay. Branches were strewn across the road making more work for lake staff. All of us that braved the elements slogged our way through puddles and patches of slippery mud. It was great. The air was fresh and the rain was warm. Other people that partook of the rainy weather were as exuberant as I was. Soon we will see a burst of color at the lake. Already the viney wild cucumber is winding itself around anything that is still. It will only be around for a month or two until next year. It is very pretty now. If you run, walk or bike with your head down you will miss the red, orange and yellow monkey flowers, the vervane, another favorite, pearly everlasting and deer weed is blooming now. Also, flowering mule fat and black sage. Check them out soon. Reservoir Keeper, Gayle Havens told me that as of March 1, the gate to lake parking would be opened to cars at 5:30am instead of 6:00am to accommodate early risers that want to exercise before work. This new time will be the yearround time opening, so far. Staff never wanted the later time opening but it was a decision they did not make. Lots of cars are lined up at the entrances as the lake truck approaches the locked gates. ***** An update on the adoption of Sara Elizabeth from Uganda: Last month I wrote about Amy and Court Levi and their three boys. One boy is adopted and the young Levis' wanted to adopt a Ugandan baby girl that they heard about. Amy and Court went to Uganda and fell in love with Sara Elizabeth who was sickly and not getting the care she needed because it wasn't available. After much time of waiting and interviews, the Levis' were initially told "yes she will be able to be adopted but she can't be taken out of the country." Finally, after months of emotional ups and downs, the adoption was finalized and a judge issued a visa for the baby. She is now home with her new siblings and hopefully will get the medical attention she needs. The Levis' are hoping that Sara Elizabeth will become a happy, healthy American little girl. *****

Foster Elementary School Foster Elementary has started the New Year with a Bang! We just received notice from the State that we have been nominated as one of 15 schools to move on to the final stage of the Distinguished School application process. It could not happen without all the amazing work that is done each day by the teachers, students, administrators, and employees on campus! A big congratulations goes out to everyone at Foster Elementary. The PTA did a lot of fundraising in the beginning of the year and is now ready to help Foster be all that it can be! During the month of February the all school art classes will start up again. We will also be treated to a new mural or two around campus. We can't wait to see how they will continue to beautify our school and nurture our learning environment. As always, we need to give a big thank you to the PTA. Without their help and support we would not be able to be as successful as we are. The PTA is also always looking for new members. Membership is down from last year, by almost 47 people, and all money raised goes directly to support the school and children. The 5th grade classes have been busy fundraising with their See's Candy Sales that took place in at the end of January and beginning of February. All money raised will help the 5th grade classes with their end of the year activities. Who doesn't love a good box of chocolates too! In January we had a special treat from children's author Jonathan Rand. We were treated to a wonderful assembly where he shared with us about his life, books, and about how he became to be an author. What a wonderful and inspiring opportunity for our students to be involved in. There are always opportunities to get involved at Foster Elementary. Give the office a call and see how you can help.
Gage Elementary School This month the third graders finished up their Earth Science Unit with a bang! Parents, teachers and students from all grades hovered over handmade volcanoes as the third graders mixed baking soda and vinegar. Screams and cheers erupted as the lava flowed from the volcanoes. It was the perfect way to end months of studying our planet and universe! As part of our GATE program, all Gage students are invited to our special Saturday fieldtrips. These fieldtrips are designed to get students out into the community of San Diego and support the science and social studies standards. The latest trip was to the Chula Vista Nature Center. We were able to see plants and animals that are native to San Diego and especially the salty marshes of the South Bay. Parents and students were able to get up close and personal as they touched the sting rays and watched them swim and splash in the beautiful tanks. The endangered green sea turtles, sea horses and rainbow trout were all fascinating! The next field trip is on Saturday, March 6, 2010. It will take place at the Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College. We will be learning the importance of water conservation in the arid region of San Diego. The drums were sounding Friday, February 5th, as the Solemar educational group performed for all Gage students. They experienced the energy of Cuban and Brazilian music as they learned about the unique instruments used by musicians from these regions. They learned how history and folk lore are embedded within the music as they clapped along with the musicians. The next few weeks promise to be as eventful as the last. Call or stop by Gage to see how you can get involved.

Hearst Elementary School News The Hearst Elementary School Talent Show on Friday, February 19th was truly a "Thriller"! The theme was a celebration of the music of Michael Jackson, and for the night, many of the performers were the kings and queens of pop. Over 120 students performed in the show exhibiting their talents as singers, dancers, gymnasts and musicians and included performances of Tae Kwon Do, jumping rope and even a circus act! The production was run very professionally with Michelle Gilmore as the Director. Thanks to Michelle and Assistant Director, Karen Connor, and Stage Manager, Pam Mittleman, the children enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their skills while learning firsthand how much practice and organization are required to produce a theatrical performance. A big thanks also to Mike McSweeney for making the music sound amazing and to all the parents and students for their dedication and time spent rehearsing their acts. On Saturday, March 13th, from 6:00-10:00pm in the St. Therese Social Center, the Phoebe Hearst Elementary School FounThe First Grade Daisies of Hearst Elementary dressed in Chargers jerseys for dation will host its 12th annual Dinner and Auctheir talent show performance of the "LT tion, "Rock the Lights Slide." The plans have been drawn up and a grant application submitted to make the dream of expanding the Marvin Garden a reality. The outdoor space will consist of a native garden to showcase San Diego County's native flora and fauna, a colorful array of flowers in the rainbow garden, and raised beds for growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs. A shaded sitting area will be included for the students and staff to relax in while learning lessons across the curriculum. The garden will provide hands-on experience opportunities for science, math, literature, and art. Kids will be creating art projects to enhance the garden space. Parent volunteers will be needed to construct the planting beds, install irrigation and assist with planting and maintenance projects such as weeding. Mission Trails Regional Park, continued from front page The very best way to learn more about MTRP is by speaking to a knowledgeable volunteer at the Visitor Center. As an example, Trail Guide Myrna Bates was recently seen and heard poring over a map with a first-time visitor, pointing out the best places to look for waterfalls, over a dozen different species of wildflowers currently blooming, and rare birds passing through at this time of year. The Mission Trails Visitor Center is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is conveniently located at One Father Junipero Serra Trail, just off Mission Gorge Road. During Visitor Center hours, volunteers also answer questions over the phone, (619) 668-3281. Explore Mission Trails Day on Saturday, May 15, will top off the spring offerings with free pony rides, a dozen hands-on discovery stations, live animal encounters, and child-themed nature hikes. One of the most popular activities during this annual event is a visit from Ms. Frizzle™ of Scholastic Publishing's "The Magic School Bus"© book and television series. Ms. Frizzle's visit, courtesy of the San Diego Natural History Museum, enthralls youngsters as she teaches them about one of our most common backyard critters-coyotes. Mission Trails Regional Park is often referred to as the third jewel in the City of San Diego Parks System, along with Balboa Park and Mission Bay Park. By far the largest of the three parks, it too is managed by the City of San Diego Park & Recreation Department. Many of the year-round opportunities at MTRP are made possible through a partnership with the Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation, Inc., a 501(c) 3, non-profit public benefit corporation created to provide fund-raising and special programs for the Park. On April 24, a joint fundraising dinner event will be held at the Visitor Center, jointly benefiting the Spirit of 76 Foundation of Patrick Henry High School and the Foundation. For more details about the many spring activities being offered at MTRP, log onto www.mtrp.org . Advance registration is required and a small fee charged for some events. The Web site features a map of the entire park, including trails, and driving directions. Or call the Visitor Center and speak to a volunteer, (619) 668-3281.

Patrick Henry High School presents JUSTICE 101 for Parents Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 6:00-8:00 PM in the Cafetorium Did you know? In the past six years, more than 143 San Diego deaths were attributed to underage drinking. And in 2008, more than 300 kids entered a county treatment program for their addiction to alcohol. (San Diego Youth Council) Forty-two percent of 11th graders reported drinking in the past 30 days. Ten percent of 9- and 10-year-olds have started drinking. (San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency) One in five teens in a serious relationship reports having been hit, slapped, or pushed by a partner. (National Center for Victims of Crimes) Young people and adults have been criminally charged with a felony for sending, receiving, or creating a photo involving a person younger than 18 in a sexually explicit or obscene image. Depending on the crime and the age, a high school student can be charged as an adult and the record can follow them for their entire life, including registering as a sex offender. Parents can be held criminally liable for hosting a party where alcohol is served. An entire college fund or retirement fund can be wiped out to pay for the defense of a teen's criminal act or for a rehabilitation program. If any of these facts surprise you, the San Diego Superior Court wants you to hear what local teens are really doing with their friends, or on their cell phones and computers. Award-winning Judge Frederic L. Link of the San Diego Superior Court created and presents Justice 101 for Parents. It's a very candid discussion about what he sees in his court-

room every day: teens and young adults who make poor choices and wind up in serious legal trouble. Judge Link is nationally recognized for speaking on the issues that teens face today, and after 29 years on the bench, he's seen it all! He gives parents the straight facts--even those they may not want to hear--and he offers practical advice on how they can help their teens avoid situations that can destroy their lives. Joining Judge Link in the presentation is Juvenile Court Judge Carolyn M. Caietti. Appointed to the bench in 2006, she shares Judge Link's passion for reaching youth on the brink of adulthood. She knows how critical it is to get through to them now about the dangers and responsibilities they face, and why it's so important that parents don't ignore what's really happening in their kids' lives. Both Judges Link and Caietti are dynamic and animated speakers with a "no-holds barred" approach to addressing these tough issues. Together they present a powerful message. This presentation is designed for parents ONLY. Students and young children will not be admitted. We hope to see you then. Don't miss Justice 101 for Parents!
Pershing Middle School Engaging and Personal Learning Environment at Pershing Middle School Pershing Middle School has recently undergone some extensive developments in our classrooms, and we are so excited to share the news with our community! As part of a pilot program, initiated by funds through Proposition S, Pershing Middle School acquired interactive white boards, class sets of Netbooks, and other digital tools for all sixth grade classrooms. This technology affords students an engaging and personalized learning environment that allows them to immediately respond to an instructor's question through their computers, access information on the internet, and create interactive presentations. Students can also type up and print out class assignments, and use content-based games to accelerate their learning on campus. In addition, Pershing now has surround-sound speakers in every room that are connected to a wireless voice amplification system that the teachers wear to help students hear instructions more clearly. The interactive white boards are particularly exciting, since their presence allows for a more hands-on learning experience for every child. We at Pershing are thrilled to have the new technological developments in our classroom that are directly supporting every child in an astoundingly innovational way. Spelling Bee Congratulations to our school Spelling Bee participants and finalist! It was another wonderful year for Pershing spellers. Congratulations to Paul Osuna 6th grade winner, Zachary Snow 7th grade winner, and special congratulations to our 8th grade school wide winner Kat Dinershteyn who will represent Pershing at the Countywide Spelling Bee in March. Visit our website at www.sandi.net/pershing to get the most current information.
St Therese Academy The students, faculty and parents of St. Therese Academy had a wonderful time participating in Catholic Schools Week. There were so many fun-filled activities for everyone to enjoy! We started the week with Move Up Monday; every class was able to move up to the next grade level for a preview of their upcoming classroom and studies. Each class wore their class colors. We also had a fantastic talent show where students performed a wide variety of acts. On Team Tuesday: Students were allowed to wear jerseys or team shirts of their favorite sports teams. In the afternoon, the students participated in a volleyball match against the faculty. The day ended with a fundraiser dinner at Fuddruckers. Wednesday was Multi-Cultural Awareness day, the perfect time for students to wear outfits that showed a spirit for cultural diversity. Students also enjoyed an ethnic hot lunch. Decade Thursday was a complete blast. Students dressed as twin or triplets with each other. The students finished the day with family skate night at Roller Skate Land. On Friday they enjoyed the annual spelling bee and ended the day with a Burger King Lunch. We ended Catholic Schools Week on Saturday night with a family Sock Hop. Everyone wore poodle skirts and leather jackets and enjoyed food, music and fellowship. This was a great finale to end such an enjoyable week. Thank you to the student council and the 8th grade and all the wonderful volunteers for making this the best Catholic Schools week ever. The ethnic hot lunch was a huge success! We raised over $1000 this year which will be donated to a retirement home and orphanage in Tijuana. Thank you to Claudia Halley for organizing this event and to all the families who brought such wonderful food for all of us to enjoy. The 5th grade trip to Philadelphia was an amazing adventure. While staying at the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, we were able to relive the experiences of daily life during 1776. The trip included traveling to Washington's Crossing, The Old Barracks in Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell, the Philadelphia state house, the Betsy Ross house, Franklin's Press, Pennbury Manor, Penn's Landing, and we had lunch in an Amish home while seeing Lancaster County. We were also fortunate to have it snow over 3" on Monday; what a treat when we re-enacted the battle of Paoli with snowballs! Thank you to Ms. Zora for organizing and moderating an outstanding Geography and Spelling Bee. Many Students competed from each grade level but 8th grader, Matthew Joseph took top honors in the Geography Bee and Hugh Maguire was the runner up. Congratulations to our very own St Therese graduate, Andi Seikaly who has been officially deemed the Valedictorian of The Academy of Our Lady of Peace. In addition, she was named Miss OLP. Water Authority, continued from front page at a lower elevation than the existing pipelines, so it will be able to carry more water to treatment plants that produce drinking water for San Diego County residents. Installation of new pipe in the southern portion of the new tunnel is complete; the northern section is tunneled and pipe sections are currently being installed and secured into place. The new flow regulatory structure, which is scheduled to start construction in summer 2011, will be a buried reservoir measuring approximately 400 feet long by 300 feet wide with an aboveground access building. It will be able to contain approximately 12 million gallons of water and will control flows downstream. It will be similar in size and function to the first flow regulatory structure built in the same general area of the park in the mid-1990s for the treated water pipeline. When the new facilities are complete, the Water Authority will remove the remaining tall blue pipeline vent stack that is visible in the park and replace all the former blue vent stacks with much shorter structures. The new crossing of the San Diego River was completed in 2009, just in time for the rainy season. The new river crossing allows park rangers and emergency vehicles to more easily access the interior portions of the park from the south. A bollard with markings was placed at the mid-point of the river, so those using the crossing can gauge the likely depth of the river at its deepest spot. In conjunction with the river crossing work, the contractor removed concrete debris and rubble from an old crossing adjacent to the north side of the San Diego River. This work is being completed as part of the park restoration plan. At the end of construction activities, in 2013, the Water Authority will restore all areas disturbed by construction. Those areas will be recontoured and revegetated to return them to as close as original as possible. Some of the restoration work is currently under way on the first flow regulatory structure site, and at the San Diego River crossing, as is the vernal pool creation effort near the location of the new flow regulatory structure. GEMS & JEWELS By Enhancery Jewelers, Kathleen White, Graduate Gemologist, GIA
FEATURED ITEM- CLADDAGH & CELTIC JEWELRY FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY Claddagh and Celtic jewelry features timeless symbols of "love, Loyalty and friendship" reign supreme by Irish designers. Traditional Claddagh jewelry features a heart with a crown held between two hands. This design is found in rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets. The rings worn on the right hand with the heart pointing away from your own heart shows that your are open to love, with the heart pointing inward it denotes that your are spoken for, or on the left hand that you are happily married. Celtic jewelry stems from the ancient spiritual beliefs of the Celts using flowing knot work symbolizing eternal life and unending love. Each knot has it's own distinct meaning. Celtic endless wedding bands have no beginning and no end, intertwined in everlasting love.
BIRTHSTONE OF THE MONTH - AQUAMARINE OR BLOODSTONE Although very different these two historic gems both promise courage to those born in March. Aquamarine one of the birthstones for March derives its name from "Ocean Water". Aqua, a member of the beryl family, is usually light to medium blue, sometimes with a greenish blue hue. Ancients believed aquamarine endowed the wearer with courage, happiness and increased intelligence. Our Aquas are found in Minas Gerais, Brazil or in Xinjiang, China. Dark green bloodstone another March birthstone is an opaque gem noted for the bright red flashes on it's surface and has been a favorite for men's jewelry since the middle ages. Call Enhancery Jewelers (619) 282-3900 for answers to any gem and jewelry questions you may have, or visit our website enhancery.com. Enhancery Jewelers is located in the Chili's Shopping Center at 4242 Camino del Rio N.#17 (at I-8 & Mission Gorge). Open Tues.-Fri., 10-6pm; Sat. 10-4pm. Designed by leading church architects domusstudio architecture, the onestory youth/education building represents Phase 1A of an approved multiphase master plan for the San Diego area church. The next phase is an addition to the structure that will replace the church's existing preschool building. As San Carlos United Methodist Church and its ministry and services grow, additional aspects of the master plan will be developed. "Groundbreaking is a ceremonial but important step for church members, showing that all their years of planning are coming to fruition as construction actually begins," said Wayne Holtan, a principal at domusstudio architecture. The San Diego-based architecture firm specializes in church-related building projects, including more than 20 currently in process. "This building is an exciting new beginning that will serve youth today as well as future generations of the church and community," Holtan added.

Del Cerro Action Council By Jay Wilson The positive news for Del Cerro is the City is actually ready to begin undergrounding "residential" areas north of I-8 and the first major area is designated 7CC. This is the first development area of Del Cerro; east of College Avenue and everything south of Elmcrest. This encompasses 425 homes. On Thursday, March 25 from 6-8pm, Nathan Bruner, the City's Undergrounding Program Manager and his staff will be at Temple Emanu-El to go over the details of the project that will begin in April or May. Mr. Bruner will also be sending out invitations for this meeting to each of the 425 residences in the 7CC area. If you would like more information regarding the underground program including a status of all of the active projects, the master plan, or completed projects, you can visit the website at www.sandiego.gov/undergrounding. SDSU won their appeal against DCAC, the City of San Diego and MTS. As of this printing, neither the City of San Diego nor MTS has made a decision on whether to pursue any further legal action. As a result the DCAC Board met and unanimously voted to not continue with any additional legal action at this time. The potential costs would deplete our finances well before we even reached a trial date. If you are looking for something to do with the family on Sunday, March 7, the Mission Trails Regional Park is having a concert at 2pm in their amphitheater. It will feature a sensational string quartet performing "Light Classical and Popular Favorites." The next meeting of the DCAC will be Thursday, April 22, at Temple Emanu-El at 7pm. If you have a question or concern regarding Del Cerro, please email me at jwilson2@cox.net.
San Carlos Area Council News By John F. Pilch, President Due to the publishing schedule for the Mission Times Courier, the March 3rd meeting of the San Carlos Area Council (SCAC) will have already taken place by the time you read this article. Our guest speaker was Professor Pat Abbott, an expert on natural disasters, a Professor Emeritus at San Diego State University, an author and a resident of San Carlos. Dr. Abbott is the person sought out by the local media whenever a major earthquake occurs, locally or elsewhere. He provided the audience with a wealth of information about the geology of San Diego, from seismic faults to the potential for a tsunami striking the San Diego shoreline. Professor Abbott obtained a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin and wrote Natural Disasters, which was published by McGraw-Hill. He also spoke about his recent trip to Antarctica (not his first) and responded to the many questions from the audience. We thank Professor Abbott for taking the time from his busy schedule to address the SCAC members and residents of the Navajo Area.
The next meeting of the San Carlos Area Council is Wed. April 7, at the San Carlos Branch Library at 7:00pm. We will have presentations about two projects in San Carlos and will vote on each. One is the demolition of the Valero gas station at the corner of Jackson Drive and Navajo Road. The applicant plans to replace it with a new station with four fuel dispensers, a car wash and a convenience store. That's all we have currently and don't know if alcohol sales will be sought for the location. The Development Services Dept. of the City is reviewing the project, so more information should be available prior to or at the April 7th meeting. We would like input from residents about this proposed change for the property, especially the car wash and another convenience store. The other project is a proposed childcare center at 6261 Jackson Drive. It would be adjacent to an existing childcare center, Grow Smart Children's Academy, at 6271 Jackson Drive, where 24 children are enrolled. This proposed use of a single-family residence requires a Conditional Use Permit from the City, due to the zoning and the use as a commercial property in a residential neighborhood. We hope to have more information on this project prior to the meeting and are seeking input from the neighbors and residents about the appropriateness of this proposed childcare center. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please send an e-mail stating your position to jfpilch@hotmail.com. Many thanks to District 5 City Councilmember Carl DeMaio for conducting a Town Hall discussion of City Finances at the February 3rd meeting. He is attempting a series of reforms, with a focus on Wasteful Spending at City Hall. For more info., please visit: www.ReformSanDiego.com. The Lake Murray Playground Project is moving forward and needs help from the community to raise the funds needed to build a new playground for the children in our community. Visit: www.lakemurrayplayfroundproject.org. If you'd like to become a member of the SCAC, have an issue you wish us to consider, or just have a question about the community, please contact me at (619) 462-1408 or by e-mail at: jfpilch@hotmail.com.
continued from page 13 speaker at the March 9 evening meeting of the Navajo Canyon Republican Women, Fed. to be held at Brothers Restaurant in Allied Gardens. The gettogether will begin at 5:30pm with a full-course dinner served at 6:00pm, followed by Mr. Del Beccaro's talk. Tom advocates pro-growth and reformminded policies, the virtue of tax cuts, a strong national defense and the embrace of traditional American values. He is an author and also a columnist for the e-magazine, politicalvanguard.com. Reservations are required. Price is $20 and is all-inclusive. In April we return to our regular luncheon meeting at The Brigantine restaurant in La Mesa to hear Damon Dunn, conservative Republican candidate for Secretary of State in 2010. Mr. Dunn is an inspiring figure with his rise from poverty to excel at Stanford, play in the NFL, build a successful nationwide business while continuing his ministry of service to those who need extra help. His message resonates with those who believe we need to reduce bureaucracy in government and education in order to remove barriers to personal opportunities and advancement. The meeting will begin at 11am, with a full-course luncheon at noon, followed by our speaker. Reservations are required. Price is $18. www.DamonDunn.com. For all NCRWF events, contact Susan Cates at mcatesfamily@cox.net or call her at (619) 697-2235. Ads of more than 25 words cost 50¢ per additional word; payment must accompany the ad. All free classifieds will run for only one issue even if you indicate on the ad that you want it to run more than one time. The following ad classifications are eligible for free classified ads: FOR SALE, GARAGE SALES, LOST & FOUND, WANTED, FOR RENT, NOTICES and YOUTH SERVICES. However, this does not include WANTED ads for multi-level sales or FOR RENT ads for vacation/rental condos or NOTICES for any profit-making organization. We do not guarantee that we will run all free classifieds submitted. If you include payment for an ad that normally is considered a free classified, we guarantee that it will be printed in the next available issue, unless it is inappropriate for a family oriented newspaper. We will not call or write to inform you if your classified ad does not qualify as a free classified; we simply receive too many ads to provide that level of service. We do not mail copies of the newspaper for proof of publication.

NOTICES ads may NOT be ads normally classified under SERVICES (i.e.., business ads) - the Editor reserves the right to reject or re-classify any ads sent in under the NOTICES category that should more appropriately be placed elsewhere. PAID ADS may run for any consecutive number of issues, provided that proper payment for the ads is received in advance. NO PHONE CALLS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR RENEWAL OF ADS. THE LAST DATE PRE-PAID ADS WILL RUN IS PRINTED AFTER EACH AD. IF NO DATE IS INCLUDED AFTER THE AD, IT RUNS ONLY ONCE. When counting words - a word is a word, regardless of the number of letters.
