The FUTURE face of Mission Valley
Doug Manchester reveals plans for the U-T's redevelopment -by Dave Schwab
the u-t
plans to redevelop its existing Mission Valley headquarters site, creating an estimated $200-million, pedestrianfriendly, mixed-use project offering residential, office and retail in twin towers. The project could set the tone for future development in Mission Valley and elsewhere, according to Perry Dealy, president of Dealy Development, team leader for U-T’s redevelopment, launched by hotel developer and U-T publisher Douglas F. Manchester. “Transit-oriented design is a very key part of the future growth of San Diego County, and this project is a good example of how mixed-use projects can serve as infill for redevelopment,” said Dealy. “We’re really trying to create a wonderful pedestrian experience putting townhomes up against tower buildings. It’s possible to do these things sensitively, allowing the river to flow and the natural habitat to coexist with pedestrians.” Noting that Manchester had acquired the U-T property because “it’s a great real estate investment,” Dealy pointed out much of the existing site is a giant parking lot next to the San Diego River. “Being a good steward of the land, putting people living, playing and working there is a much better use in this
location,” he said. The project envisions 200 residences in one 22-story building, with 235,000 square feet of offices and 6,500 square feet of retail in another 10-story building, which is to include the newspaper’s headquarters. A parking garage with a rooftop swimming pool, gym and tennis courts is also planned as well as a San Diego River trail for biking, walking and running. Dealy said the project’s residential component will “provide market-rate housing, either condominiums or rentals, for-sale housing.” “We’re not changing the existing two buildings,” Dealy added of existing onsite facilities housing the U-T newspaper’s headquarters and production machinery. Office space to be created will be strictly Class A, though there are no specific tenants in mind. “We’re open to the marketplace,” said Dealy. “Ideally, you would have one or two big tenants taking up a large part of the building. We’ll go out on the market looking for tenants with contiguous, large floor plans.” The new office building will be south of U-T’s existing headquarters fronting Interstate 8 and Highway 163, while the residential tower will be adjacent to the San Diego River in the northern part of the project’s master plan. The project’s going to take some time to build. See U-T, page 10

Mission Valley’s newest venue for local artists, the C3 Performing Arts Center, is tucked into the eastern end of the area. The center’s name refers to the three programs taught at the center: art, finance and music. C3’s president and founder, David Higgins, serves as director of the center’s School of Music – Higgins and several other musicians donate their time as teachers to help beginner students find the instruments of choice. Higgins himself teaches guitar and piano. The free program lasts eight weeks and concludes with a live performance that serves as both a final exam and a graduation ceremony. The students are mostly young children, but there are adult classes as well. Professionally, Higgins works in See C3 page 16

The W San Diego recently underwent a $5 million renovation and added Kelvin to attract both local as well as out-of-town visitors. Harry created the new menu from scratch, featuring unique items, such as popcorn chowder and compressed watermelon cubes with Point Reyes blue cheese. “I wanted to make the menu at Kelvin fun as well as unique,” said Harry. “The idea is to have our menu reflect the new hip motif of the W San Diego.” Originally from Canada, Harry relishes his new life in Mission Valley. “I absolutely love barbequing on my balcony,” he said. “Just yesterday my girlfriend and I had both sliding glass doors open as the evening began to cool and twilight approached. Hillcrest gets its flag!
Viv ON FILM by Vivian Nguyen
BATMAN
The Dark Knight Rises For seven years, director Christopher Nolan has captured his viewers’ hearts and minds through the cinematic journey of a vigilante in disguise who fights crime under the cover of nightfall. Since the second film in the trilogy became a huge hit in the box office, Nolan’s audience has been on the edge of their seats, waiting impatiently for the last movie in the franchise to hit the theaters and blow everyone away. The Dark Knight Rises centers on Gotham City, years after the criminalfighting Batman has disappeared without a trace. The city still mourns their seemingly golden hero, Harvey Dent, all the while blaming Batman for his murder. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) stays isolated from the world in his mansion, too lost in darkness and pain to venture out and rebuild everything that has been broken since the incident with the Joker. But his curiosity gets the better of him when a cat-like jewel thief by the name of Selena Kyle (Anne Hathaway) slips into his bedroom and flawlessly steals his mother’s pearls. But Selena’s appearance is just the tip of the iceberg; Bruce is soon forced back into the world and his bat-suit when the city is again threatened by a new villainous character—Bane (Tom Hardy). Bane is an untouchable man, banished from the League of Shadows, and has come to Gotham in hopes of fulfilling Ra’s Al Ghul’s (Liam Neeson) destiny by destroying the city and the people in it. And unlike the Joker, whose motive was to play Batman’s strings to the point of insanity, Bane has only motive—to annihilate Gotham’s dark hero. The third and final film of Nolan’s Batman series is dark and powerful. It captures the ominous spirit of the previous two movies, but also ties the trilogy together and ends it on a strong note. Bane is an indestructible villain, and after each and every scene, the audience is left cringing because this man pulls out all the stops from the very beginning. DeSee VIV, page 5
After years of planning, Hillcrest finally got its own giant pride flag at the corner of University and Normal Street. The flag was raised at a block party put together with donations from private citizens and Stoli. The large flag dominates the skyline and can be seen from just about anywhere in Hillcrest. “Here in Hillcrest we have a lot of fun. The Hillcrest Business Association knows how to throw a good party, but everything we do is also designed to help the community,” said Benjamin Nicholls, executive director of the Hillcrest Business Association. “We’re glad that our friends in the industry, like Stoli, who are there to support our street fairs and nightlife, are also there when we do important things like raising our pride flag and showing San Diego what Hillcrest stands for.”

OGGI’S GOT GAME B
ack before Norv Turner ruined the Chargers, running back Ladainian Tomlinson was a fixture on TV, touting the virtues of Oggi’s Pizza. Sure, the commercials were campy, but scoring one of the most famous Chargers of all time to represent your restaurant was an advertising coup d‘état. But owner Dino Hurst wants San Diegans to know that there is much more to Oggi’s than just pizza. Oggi’s has been a Mission Valley icon for years. Known as the place to watch the game, getting a seat on any given Sunday happens only by getting there early. But Hurst’s beginnings were actually more corporate than culinary. “The restaurant business actually came as a secondary plan in my life,” said Hurst. After being a regional manager and a huge computer company for years, Hurst decided to leave that world behind to start his own eatery. Hurst founded Oggi’s in 1995 by opening their Carmel Mountain Ranch location. He named the restaurant by holding a contest in which the winning name of Oggi’s netted one lucky fan $1000. Shortly afterward, Hurst opened his Mission Valley location, which became the flagship of the Oggi’s empire. A passion for beer led Hurst to include a brewery in his new restaurant plans, a feat that gives him OG status in our local brewing scene. “We were the fourth company to start brewing here in San Diego,” Hurst said. “Now when you look at how our craftbeer industry has exploded, that’s really incredible. In our tenure, we have captured two gold medals in the World Beer Cup. One for our Scottish Ale, and one for our stout. Now people come for the beer as much as they come for the food!”
Page 3
Perhaps owing to his Italian background, Hurst’s passion for food runs deep. His son helped him revamp the menu and Oggi’s now features all sorts of traditional fare. “A lot of people are unaware that we have fresh calamari and fish shipped in every day. Everything is made to order – I’m especially proud of my Cobb Salad and Goat Cheese Spinach Salad. Plus, our entire menu is available for delivery. Some people think of us as a pizzeria, but we are so much more than that. Our food is fresh and authentic, and that shows because now only about 15 percent of our food ordered is pizza,” Hurst said. As for the Chargers, the shenanigans are off to an early start this year with the car-wrecking and off-field injuries. Nevertheless, Oggi’s stays true to its local roots and remains a great place for Mission Valley residents to relax and enjoy one of the best Hefeweizens this side of Bavaria, as well as some great Italian fare. Twenty years later and 17 locations stronger, Oggi’s has come a long way!

The Old Globe presents Allegiance – A New American Musical, which will run on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre from Sept. 7 to Oct. 21. The musical tells the story of a Japanese American family’s struggle while being interned in the United States during World War II and stars television and film icon George Takei, who was actually imprisoned in the Camp Rohwer and Camp Tule Lake internment camps as a child. The show coincides with a sculptural art exhibit called “The Tag Project” by artist Wendy Maruyama. “The Tag Project” memorializes the nearly 120,000 Japanese Americans who were imprisoned in U.S. internment camps during World War II. The project consists of 10 groupings of replicas of the historic identification labels issued to every internee, including their name, number and the camp to which they were relocated. Admittance to the exhibition is included in the ticket price to Allegiance. Go to www.TheOldGlobe.org for more information. (pictured: Lea Salonga and George Takei.)

By Vince Meehan Local author Deborah Serra recently released her new novel Primal exclusively as an e-book. This story was once adapted as a screenplay, and actually purchased as such by Hollywood director James Cameron. After Cameron decided to write his own screenplays, he gave Serra the rights back so she could market it as a novel. Serra sees going digital as a smart marketing move as well as a sign of the times. “When it comes to people who really love to read, the appetite is insatiable and they eat up stories by the week,” she said. “It makes sense for those readers to gravitate towards e-books since they want to read the story and move on. Then you don’t accumulate a ton of read books. It’s not the death of hard-copy books, because as for reference or history books, having a hard-copy version to go back to makes good sense. But for avid novel readers, e-books are the new way to go.” Serra’s Hollywood connection dates back to her days as a writer for shows, such as Punky Brewster. Serra moved to Los Angeles from New York after high school to pursue a career as a writer. Serra said writing for the entertainment industry was priceless in gaining notoriety. “First off, for a true writer, it makes sense to live in Los Angeles, where there are many things to write for. But for a screenwriter, it’s an absolutely necessity because nobody will consider your work if they haven’t heard of you.” Serra credits the Writer’s Guild with a lot of her success in writing. “By being a member, there is a lot of stuff that is taken care of beforehand. They set guidelines and minimum payment structures so you don’t have to deal with that.” Eventually Serra moved down to San Diego to focus on novel writing and leave the Hollywood scene for good. Primal is a thriller that deals with a mother’s protective nature driven to its extreme. The story actually comes across like a movie plot and it’s fun to imagine who would be cast in the various roles. Primal is available at Kindlebooks.com as well as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. And there is another great advantage to distributing a novel digitally. Literary agents have always had the well-deserved reputation of being pompous and uneducated in the literary field, and, until now, you could not get a publishing deal without one. Self-publishing eliminates that drama and sets you free. “By distributing your novel digitally, you eliminate the publisher, agent, and any other middlemen who come with it,” Serra said. “The freedom to make your own decisions is priceless, especially compared to Hollywood where even the hairdresser has input!”

Page 5 Viv, from page 2 spite the fact the series is centered on Batman, The Dark Knight Rises focuses more on Gotham and how it copes without the vigilante. Though there are still noble men who are willing to lay their life on the line and put their trust in the dark knight, Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and Officer Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) cannot keep the villains at bay alone. Still, despite the incredible special effects, script, and direction, there is a sense of incompleteness in the hour or so where Batman rarely makes an appearance. However, the rest of the cast, especially Hathaway, is able to keep the movie’s momentum going before the dark knight is able to rise again. Like most of Nolan’s films, there are many components to The Dark Knight Rises. Each scene is darker and more complicated than the next and that reels you in from the start. The film is not only exciting and terrifying, but it also evokes emotion and provides an underlying message and depth that is missing in many movies within the superhero genre. Bottom line, The Dark Knight Rises is one of the biggest summer blockbusters of the year, and is a solid ending to Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

ATTENTION LOCAL BANDS! O'S CALIFORNIA KITCHEN COMES TO MISSION VALLEY
T
here’s good news for anyone who really loved Pat & Oscar’s in Mission Valley. The eatery has been reborn as O’s American Kitchen, complete with a whole new look, feel and menu. Mission Valley News spoke with Tim Foley of O’s American Kitchen about the new makeover. A new executive chef has been hired to revamp the menu into a more evolved version of the fast-casual fare, according to Foley. “We offer high-value food at family prices, using only high-end ingredients. We have introduced rotisserie chicken, robust pizza, and other favorites so there is sure to be something for everyone,” he said. Foley told Mission Valley News the name, “O’s American Kitchen,” was chosen to reflect the commitment of serving old-fashion American style comfort food to families at reasonable prices. “Our name has changed and we have revamped our menu some, but the fact remains that if you liked Pat & Oscars, you will love O’s American Kitchen just as much,” Foley said. Foley was also excited about the upcoming new wine and local craft beer specials. “We’re going to feature something fairly new at O’s American Kitchen. It’s a tap-wine system where premiere wines can be shipped like keg beer. Not only will it allow us to serve wine at a substantially lower cost to the customer, it is very eco-friendly. Because of this new way of serving wine, you will be able to have a glass of Central Coast or Napa wines for $3 a glass at our happy hours. We’ll even feature premiere wines from the Willamette Valley region of Oregon, which would normally go for $11 a glass.” Another feature at O’s American Kitchen will be seasonal items on the menu. “We’ll have certain salads during the summer, and things like meatloaf and chicken pot pie for fall. This will create a real sense of variety throughout the year,” Foley said. The new wine feature is still a few weeks in the future, but look for completion by the end of summer. Then go and enjoy!

Brian O'Neill, director of services for Four Points by Sheraton, (on left) and Christopher Harris, catering sales manager, meet with Allan and Jane Rappoport in preparation for the upcoming reunion. "These guys at Four Points have been spectacular in helping us put this thing together, we're really looking forward to the event," said Rappoport,
Brats, from page 3 Volunteer Patrol at Eastern Division. Allan admits to thinking, “Wow!” the first time he accompanied Jane to a reunion of her Frankfurt classmates. “They really exuded camaraderie,” he said. This will be the ninth reunion the Rappoports have attended, and the first they have hosted. Some who plan on attending have not seen each other in over 60 years, although their time spent together in post-WWII Germany created a bond they compare to “a band of brothers and sisters.” Early registration shows that attendees will come to San Diego from 23 different states, the District of Columbia and Costa Rica. Several graduates of Nurnberg AHS will also attend. In 1997, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the first graduating class of FAHS, the Class of 1947, reached out to former classmates and organized its first reunion. They formed The Dackel Association and invited all students from the classes of 1947-50 to join them. The association has since expanded to include classes through 1956. Interested alumni have continued to meet annually, gathering each year in a different city. Dackel is the German diminutive for dachshund, which the students chose as the title of the school’s year book for the first two years. The students of the later years were known as “Eagles,” the name chosen for their sports teams. Starting in 1949 the five U.S. dependent high schools in Germany combined to publish a hard back annual called Erinnerungen (memories) with a section for each high school. The annual staff at FAHS produced the copy and artwork for its section. For more information, go to www.usroots.com/dackel/.

Lisa Gualco, manager of Hazard Center here in Mission Valley states, “The Hazard Center is 97 percent occupied at present with indications of more clients in the very near future.” The latest client to join the center is “Which Wich Superior Sandwiches,” a Houston-based company that has 175 locations around the United States. Owner Kevin Barrie says, “All indications are that we picked the right location as we have been extremely busy and look forward to this continuing trend.” This is Kevin’s first business venture since retiring from Union Bank. You’ll just have to stop by at 7610 Hazard Center and enjoy the unique method of making your own sandwich. Also in Mission Valley, the new Sudberry Properties’ Circa 37 apartments in Civita at Mission Center Road and Friars Road have only been available for a couple of months and already more than half are leased. The condos by Shea Homes are also selling extremely well so it appears that we are on the road to recovery! We welcome your input as to what’s news and who’s news in Mission Valley for this column. Please email Gina Cord at cordgina@gmail.com or call (619) 683-2434.

WHAT'S UP
Like so many good bands, Jesse LaMonaca and The Dime Novels defy definition. While a twangy ditty with a boot-stomping beat can brand them as country, another song full of sultry soul can label them as blues. LaMonaca’s passionate lyrics weave a common thread throughout the songs, telling stories of hardship and heartache. The collection of songs on their latest album The Lament of Tumbleweed Hawk takes listeners on a journey punctuated by yearning vocals, and highlighted by various instrumental inflections. In addition to the six musicians that comprise LaMonaca’s band, a dozen more lent their talents to the creation of the album. Some San Diego favorites appearing on the album include: John Meeks, Joanie Mendenhall, and Nena Anderson. In collaborating with a variety of talent, LaMonaca’s appreciation for the roots of modern-day music makes for a sound that is both classic and contemporary. The album has even garnered them a win for Best Country or Americana Album at this year’s San Diego Music Awards. One of the more upbeat tunes on the album, “Wildcat” features layers of sound anchored by the jazzy piano of Ed Kornhauser and meandering harmonica of James Conway. Showcasing the tender side of Jesse’s vocal range “Well Has Run Dry” features gentle banjo plucking along with the delicate softness of violin by Melissa Barrison. Pedal steel and lap steel guitars by Brandon Conway can be heard on several songs and add to the classic feeling of the music. The strength of LaMonaca’s voice on “If You Call” is met with the soft harmonies of guest vocalist Arabella Harrison, and rounded out by some sexy guitar licks. The next chance to check out these true talents will be at The Griffin on Aug. 23. You can follow the band online at www.jesselamonaca.com.

THE FUTURE U-T
The plans show how the original U-T building and the existing printing building will remain a part of the site. A rooftop park will be added to the print facility for both workers and residents to enjoy.
U-T, from page 1 “We hope to have the project entitled by the end of 2013,” Dealy said. “It will probably take about a year to get the construction permits and about 18 months to construct, depending on market demand.” Dealy estimated a mid-2016 opening. Preliminary plans for U-T headquarters redevelopment were laid out by Dealy at the July meeting of Mission Valley Planning Group. His presentation drew mostly positive reviews, such as that from planning group member Gina Cord. “In my opinion, the U-T redevelopment plans are outstandingly favorable and will bring additional class to Mission Valley,” Cord e-mailed. “We need the type of people that can afford to rent Class A office buildings and top-of-the-line condos and stores. I say ‘Bravo.’” AVRP Studios of San Diego has been chosen as the U-T redevelopment project’s architect. Douglas H. Austin, the firm’s chairman/CEO, said the design of the project’s two new buildings will reflect the personality of their creator, “Papa” Doug Manchester. “He prefers timeless architecture, which is a little more classical. He’s not a fan of super contemporary,” said Austin, who added the building would also be state-of-the-art and ecologically friendly. Noting the look of the two new buildings will be “a cross between classical and modern architecture,” Austin said the grounds will be lush with fountains and other water features. “It will look almost like Versailles,” he said. “It’s going to be great.” Noting urban planning’s goal today is to create places more pedestrian friendly for people to walk to shopping
the trolley and elsewhere, Austin said the U-T headquarters site is ideally situated to achieve that objective. “You have Interstate 8 and Highway 163 right there, you don’t have to take a lot of surface streets to get there,” he said. Manchester’s vision for what he wants to do is clear, said Austin. “He wants to do something spectacular,” he said. “He’s not shy about going that extra mile to create something really wonderful.” Preliminary plans for U-T’s redevelopment could include a surprise or two. “We don’t know if we’re doing it for sure, but we’re thinking of creating a new pedestrian crossing across the river,” Dealy said. “We’re also looking at putting a restaurant with convenience parking on the riverfront.” There is a decided advantage to having residential and office in close proximity. “Where you have office and residential, you have a perfect opportunity to share parking,” Dealy said. “Ninety percent of office parking will be available at peak demand for residents, and about 50 percent of residential parking will be available at peak demand for office. Why spend resources building more parking, or having parking out on the street, when you’ve got this reservoir of office parking available?” Dealy said the U-T headquarters’ redevelopment, which will create a work-live environment by blending residential, office and retail spaces, will transform Mission Valley. “This is a great opportunity to embrace the river and integrate the whole feel, look and ecology of the environment into our project,” he said.
Chef, from page 1 looked at each other like, ‘Is this for real?’ I love living in Mission Valley!” Barbequing is a passion for Harry and he told Mission Valley News he looks forward to grilling in December. “I’m going to grill on my balcony and take photos to tease my friends back east. I know that sounds very childish and vain, but I’m going to do it!” This obsession with grilling stems from living for 12 years in New York, where it was almost impossible to do. “When I lived in the city, I’d be trying to grill on a tiny fire escape, hoping the FDNY didn’t shut me down!” Harry said with a laugh. “Then my apartment would fill with smoke and it would be a complete fiasco… that was crazy.” Harry had a chef gig at W New York before transferring to San Diego to take over Kelvin. Harry intends to introduce avant garde cuisine while incorporating local flair. He uses ropa vieja braised pork shoulder as filler for some very ethnically authentic taquito rolls, which are served on a mango/jicama slaw with salsa verde. Harry enjoys infusing a variety of distinct flavors not normally paired together. His locally-caught tequila candied halibut, served with a vanilla saffron cream sauce, is a pleasant surprise on the palate. The halibut is cooked to perfection, firm and flaky with the texture of crab meat. Harry’s love of mojitos inspired his mojito shrimp with pineapple/avocado salsa in which you can definitely taste the rum. Harry plans to ramp up culinary enthusiasm in San Diego by hosting monthly “Food Raves,” where a set number of participants can get together in a private kitchen to cook, eat and have fun while music pumps out of a boom box. A night’s stay will be included in the package so guests need not worry about returning home after a full day. Harry’s idea was inspired by a subway ride at 3 a.m. “A tired, idle mind can have a burst of genius in these situations! It will be a fun event, we will (above) The compressed watermelon with Point cook and the guests can participate if they like. Then we eat and Reyes Blue Cheese is a palate pleaser. (below) Chef Kevin has fun with the presentation of his tiramisu, talk food all night,” he said. paying homage to its coffee heritage. As for Mission Valley’s fare, Harry enjoys eating at Pho’ Cali, Oggi’s and Gordon Biersch. “I love Mission Valley because there are so many great places close to home,” he said. With San Diego’s great weather, Harry also gets to indulge his other passion: golf. “My friends tease me on how quickly I adapted to the Southern California lifestyle. OK, I’ll admit it… I bought the convertible, I got the cool pad, I took up golf again. I admit it. But isn’t that why people live here? I’m having a great time, so no apologies here!”
by Vince Meehan The plans for the new building complex at the U-T site in Mission Valley were the result of a competition in which eight different architectural firms submitted designs, with the winner securing the contract. AVRP won the contest and gave a presentation unveiling the plans at the July meeting of the Mission Valley Planning Group. The big news is the original iconic U-T building will be kept intact, and incorporated into the design of the complex. In the past, rumors persisted that Doug Manchester’s buyout of the U-T was simply a way to get a hold of the prime property for redevelopment. Some insiders speculated he had no interest at all in running a daily newspaper, which would have been the end of one of San Diego’s most established institutions. U-T employees who survived the tsunami of recent layoffs must undoubtedly feel some solace given the new plans. Indeed, as the national press question Manchester’s qualifications to be a publisher, this complex may turn out to be a stroke of genius if it ends up subsidizing the struggling U-T. The bold plans call for the addition of a spectacular office building as well as a condominium tower to the site. The schematics for the new complex are really quite striking. The new office building has a distinctive and classical design that rivals the trademark buildings of Chicago or New York City. Incorporated into the design is a “lighthouse” tower that will shine above any feature in Mission Valley. Wrapped around the tower just below the lighthouse will be a lightbox, which can generate limitless multi-colored design patterns. The MVPG voiced concerns that this feature could become tacky if allowed to go “Vegas.” Perry Dealy agreed, and suggested the display be used as a design element as opposed to an advertising medium. The presentation also included various perspectives of the proposed complex as seen from different locations in the Valley. The most dramatic view was from the Northbound 163 out of Balboa Park as you descend into Mission Valley. From this perspective, the complex is directly in front of the driver as you round the bend. The proposed condo complex looks for all intents and purposes like a mini-Manchester Hyatt transported to Mission Valley. Planners have dubbed this planned minimetropolis as the future “sexy part of Mission Valley.” When completed, this building could very well edge out the Emerald Plaza as San Diego’s new signature flagship structure. Manchester based his complex on a desire to make the Mission Valley site the new center of San Diego. We’ll see if that pans out. If it does, Papa Doug’s News Year’s Eve parties will eclipse anything held downtown.

THE COMIC CON PANELS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED by Elle Winsett
Racebending panel This is the second year in which the Racebending gang has been at Comic-Con. The panel was a fantastic and informative exploration of racial culture in mainstream media. Instead of slides, cartoons, or movie/TV previews, the Racebending panelists discussed their own experiences as minorities in their respective industries. To see the panel in full and to read more about the concept behind Racebending, visit their website, www. Racebending.com.
Kate Beaton The artist you’ve probably seen, but don’t know by name. Kate Beaton is the artist and writer of her own webcomic, Hark a Vagrant. Her comics are mainly hilarious interpretations of historical events, figures, and classic fiction. Hearing the artist herself read her own four panel comics aloud was a charming treat. Visit her site and read her fantastic comics at www.harkavagrant.com
Django Unchained There were a lot of people in Hall H for this panel for Quentin Tarantino’s new film, but quite a few missed it due to standing in line for several later panels. Tarantino made an appearance along with the cast of the Django Unchained and discussed the film in full. Tarantino’s insight and his actors’ eloquence were unbelievable. Although the panel may have been designed for a larger audience, in the end it was awesome, because it felt more like a discussion among family at the dinner table.
TOP COMIC CON BOOTHS Becky Cloonan Becky Cloonan, the creator of Demo and her minicomic, Wolves, showed off her books at her booth along with other Image artists. The caliber of her work is astounding and it was worth the wait to take a closer look at her books. It helped that Cloonan was very talkative, personable, and beyond adorable.
Necomimi The rage at Comic Con this year was the Necomimi cat ears. The ears move in accordance to your mood thanks to a brainwave reading device within the ears’ headband. When visiting the booth, you were invited to try on the ears and see how they work. The makers of the ears were in attendance and were beyond willing to give even more information about the ears. The ears cost a little less than $100, but fans were eager to spend their money on them!
Van Eaton Galleries Van Eaton Galleries is at Comic-Con every year, but people tend to ignore them for some reason. Van Eaton is home to brilliant artists such as Gris Grimly and Ruel Pascual. Besides featuring original work from current artists, Van Eaton was also selling original cells and artwork from various animation studios. Their most popular collections are their Cartoon Network and Disney collections. Van Eaton’s booth is always roomy and it’s nice to take a break to browse through colorful prints from your favorite cartoons. They always keep their collections fresh and their prices very reasonable. Stop by next year and check out the work that they have for sale at vegalleries.com.

Hello Mr. Meehan I have recently returned home from a International Beginning Experience Conference held at the San Luis Rey Mission (July 9-19), Oceanside. Whilst touring your wonderful city of San Diego and Oceanside, I picked up a copy of your Mission Valley News, Volume VI - Number 7, dated July 13, 2012, which I must say gave me some local insight and very interesting reading on my long flight home to Perth, Western Australia. My main reason for writing to you is your article, "The Hidden Danger of Social Media". You are to be congratulated on this article, especially in light of today's abuse which we are seeing so much of today. I don't think we can ignore this and must educate everyone, especially our children, to be alert and careful when using this media avenue of "correspondence," hence my letter to you today. Regards. Dymphna Margaret A. Knight (Mrs.) Perth, Western Australia

The promise of America grounded in the Constitution, contained in our Pledge of Allegiance, inscribed on the Statue of Liberty and enunciated by generations of our nation’s leaders is that America stands for liberty, for justice, for equality for all. This has been America’s Pride. To honor all servicemembers without regard to their sexual orientation is commendable, to pursue the United States’ value of equality is honorable, and to support those actions is genuinely American. The mission statement of San Diego LGBT pride is fostering pride in and respect for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, locally, nationally, and globally. It is with great pride and distinction we pursue that mission, and we were honored to do so at San Diego's Pride themed parade. We fully support, agree with, and respect the decision by Defense Secretary Leo Panetta, and hope that this is just another step on the road to equality.

JEWELRY TRENDS – NEW STYLES HAVE EXTRA LENGTH AND DRAMA Continuing a trend that began last season, many kinds of fashion jewelry display extra length to add excitement to this season’s new designs. Longer finger rings are becoming statement pieces featuring precious metal extended to give the impression of long elegant fingers. Elongated gemstone settings add a classic look to oversized cocktail rings. Trendy dangling earrings, like stiletto heels, make everyone look and feel amazing. These eye-catching designs add movement and glamour to any outfit. Super-long necklaces are known for their great versatility. They can be worn singly or looped several times to create the stylish look of a group of different lengths, a must for this season’s wardrobe. BIRTHSTONE OF THE MONTH – PERIDOT Sunny yellow green peridot pronounced (pear- a- doe) and red brown sardonyx are both ancient gems symbolizing courage for those born in August. The lime green color of transparent peridot has been a long time favorite of women. And the richly-hued opaque sardonyx was a talisman worn by Roman soldiers and is still prized for men’s rings today. Gem quality peridot comes from Arizona, Burma, Norway, islands in the Red Sea, Hawaii and is sometimes found in meteorites. It’s been mined as a gemstone for thousands of years. Martin and Kathleen White have owned Enhancery Jewelers for over thirty four years. They specialize in diamond and gemstone jewelry, custom design, appraisals, and jewelry and watch repairs.

3 Neon has hit the fashion world in Hillcrest like a ton of bricks. Everything from tees to hose are flying off the shelves if they are neon. It'll be a couple of more weeks before you have to start thinking about jackets, but it never hurts to start checking out what's out there and what will be in this year. 1) Christian Siriano has really rocked the fashion world with his exteme shoe designs. 2) If you don't get noticed in these plaid heels, I can't do anything else for you! Who can resist these? 3) A Rock 'N' Roll tie is a great accessory that can go with any look. 4) This western-inspired outfit can be worn at any function in Del Mar. And the good part is that it is not very age-specific. 5) Go out on a limb, everyone is wearing fedoras. But a pink one will set you apart. I think I got a hankerin' for a PBR Tall-boy! 6) A small piece of jewelry can give your look the bit of edge you need. 7) Classic, classic, classic. Class never goes out of style and this handbag has class written all over it.

BODY & SOUL By Lauren Westerfield, RYT
Sweet Dreams: Yoga for a Better Night’s Sleep
For many of us, yoga has become synonymous with heated studios and highoctane music, sweaty workouts and spandex pants. But look beyond the power yoga trend and remember that the practice is also (and arguably primarily) about relaxation – about focusing on the breath to release tension, calm the mind and reduce the heart rate. Creating an evening yoga practice is an ideal way to experience the sleepenhancing benefits of certain asanas, and to release any cooped-up stress in the body before turning in for the night. When you are getting ready for sleep, try performing a soothing pose like Uttanasana to stretch the legs, lengthen the spine, calm the nervous system, quiet the brain and slow the heart for greater relaxation.
Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)
Set up for a supported version of this pose by folding several blankets and stacking them on a chair. Next, stand facing the chair. Inhale and lift your arms overhead, then exhale and fold forward from the hips. You may rest your head and arms on the blankets. Breathe here for several minutes.

C3, from page 1 the financial world, but his talent and passion for music call him to give his time and effort after hours to the students. The C3 Performing Arts Center was able to move to its Grantville location in February thanks to a generous arrangement with the building’s owner, the Kester family. The structure comprises a large lounge area in front and a café in an adjoining room. The center features separate rooms, where guitar, piano and drums are taught. Five or six instructors are in the center on any given night, and they get together for a powwow to catch up on things after the sessions. The center’s crown jewel is the expansive stage set-up, which dominates the building. The stage includes lights, video screens, and a mixing booth, where students can also get involved in the support aspect of performing arts.

The students played as separate classes first, then all together in a rousing version of "Twist and Shout" with vocal teacher Jadra Clark on lead vocals. • Teachers Harold Mumford and Jadra Clark lead a guitar class as they perform their final showcase. Performances included guitar, piano and even drum classes. Several students showcased their vocal abilities as well. • Founder David Higgins stands in the cafe located at the center. Students may take a second course after completing the first course, but eventually must move on to professionally taught courses. New classes are filled every three months, and then the process starts over again. “What we do is get students started on their musical journey at no cost, that way they can find out whether or not they are into it,” said Higgins. “Some do not pursue music, but many come back to learn piano or violin after they’ve learned to play guitar.” There are guidelines to which students must adhere in order to stay in the program. First, they must have their own instruments, and second, they must commit to practicing four times a week for 20 minutes. Additionally, they must show up for class and show respect for the teachers and fellow students. Other than that, the students are free to learn and enjoy the universal language of music. The C3 Performing Arts Center is located at 4579 Mission Gorge Place, San Diego, CA 92120. Visit www.c3pac.com for more information.
d Along with music, dance and art, financial courses are available at C3 to help people who are overwhelmed at the financial jargon associated with mortgages and investments. Higgins’ financial background is crucial to the center’s success, but it’s his love for music that really shines through in his dealings with the students. “You have to understand, our students are complete beginners, and many have never played their instruments before,” said Higgins. “In this scenario, patience is a virtue, but the reward is priceless.”
